- Per Oscarsson obituary
Swedish actor best known for the 1966 film HungerPer Oscarsson, who has died aged 83, was perhaps the only leading Swedish actor who never worked with Ingmar Bergman. This might have been by accident rather than design, although Oscarsson was known for his manic performances, whereas Bergman's men were usually placid. In other words, Oscarsson was more Klaus Kinski than Max Von Sydow.Oscarsson's most memorable role was in Sult (Hunger, 1966) as Pontus, a bespectacled, penniless and starving young writer in Norway at the end of the 19th century. His complex, agonisingly convincing portrait of a man, ravaged by hunger, whose mind is on the verge of disintegration, split between moments of lucidity and despair, won Oscarsson the best actor award at Cannes and worldwide acclaim.Hunger was the first all-Scandinavian co-production. Shot in Oslo, it was based on the famous psychological novel by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun, with a Danish director (Henning Carlsen), and two Swedish actors (Oscarsson and Gunnel Lindblom) leading a predominantly Danish cast.Oscarsson, whose father was an architect, was born with a twin brother in Stockholm. He studied at the acting school of the Royal Dramatic theatre of Stockholm, prior to joining the theatre's company. In 1953 he moved to the Gothenburg City theatre and began to make a name for himself, especially for his young and vigorous Hamlet. However, despite his reputation as a stage actor, Oscarsson suffered from stage fright, which led him to retire from the theatre in the mid-1970s. He later returned to the stage, appearing as Willy Loman in a 1989 production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.Oscarsson had started to appear in films from the 1940s, co-starring with Bergman favourites such as Gunnar Björnstrand, Ingrid Thulin
- Sir Ellis Clarke obituary
The first president of Trinidad and TobagoThe lawyer and diplomat Ellis Clarke, who has died aged 93, played a leading role when Trinidad and Tobago became an independent country in 1962. While governor general from 1972, he was involved in drafting the republican constitution that in 1976 broke ties with the British monarchy while retaining membership of the Commonwealth. As the Caribbean republic's first president, appointed under that new constitution by an electoral college, he helped guide it from 1976 to 1987.When Eric Williams, prime minister and founder of the People's National Movement (PNM), died in office in 1981, Clarke appointed his successor, George Chambers. Around 40% of the country's population of currently around 1.3m people are Afro-Trinidadian, 40% Indo-Trinidadian, and 20% mixed, white or of Chinese descent. Clarke was more at home with the Afro-Trinidadian-based PNM, and when the Indo-Trinidadian-based opposition National Alliance for Reconstruction came to power in 1986, there were problems, notably a disagreement between the president and the prime minister, ANR Robinson, over powers of appointment. While Clarke won a court case over one such issue, a second dispute deterred him from seeking re-election for a third term. His time in office had coincided with a period of relative prosperity and social stability. Trinidad and Tobago's oil-based economy flourished between 1972 and 1983, though by 1986, the International Monetary Fund was providing support in return for an austerity programme that resulted in 10% unemployment. On 5 February 1985 Clarke, a devout Catholic, hosted a visit by Pope John Paul II.Clarke remained active in national life, latterly advising on further constitutional reform. - Treasures from Budapest | Visual art review
Royal Academy, LondonIt is understandable that publicists for this exhibition chose to put Egon Schiele's 1915 work Two Women Embracing on the posters. Sex sells, and drawing does not come any sexier than Schiele's transfixing image, whose ultimate provocation is the way one of the women looks around at the artist to show that she is gratifying his fantasy. But there is more to the foregrounding of this erotic masterpiece than commerce: it exemplifies a theme that runs through this once-in-a-lifetime show. From the first room, where Hungarian gothic altarpieces are juxtaposed with Italian Renaissance delights, to the last, where Schiele gives you a final thrill, the art of central Europe is richly mingled with extraordinary works from the west that are in Hungary's public collections. I've never seen such a generous loan from one country's museums – by comparison, the Hermitage exhibit at the RA was quite cautious. This is a true blockbuster, practically a museum in itself, stuffed with surprises and marvels. Highlights include a portrait by Frans Hals that proves him the equal of his contemporary Rembrandt, a pair of working-class heroes painted by Goya, a Raphael homage to Da Vinci and, oh yes, a couple of Leonardo's own greatest designs. And that merely scratches the surface. The thread that connects it all is a vision of Europe. Western Europe's artistic development has been written as a march of progress since the Renaissance. Hungarian collectors fully subscribed to that version, and bought some supreme Italian works. But here you see those paragons alongside carved wooden saints from Hungarian churches in a way that expands your sense of the variety and greatness of the continent's heritage. European art through Hungarian eyes is a landscape made new.
- In praise of … Miklós Bánffy | Editorial
Fiction set in Transylvania has never recovered from the Dracula legacy which dictates that this remote part of Romania is the scene only of Gothic horrorFiction set in Transylvania has never recovered from the Dracula legacy which dictates that this remote part of Romania is the scene only of Gothic horror, a place of fantasy castles and inbred aristocracy. Yet for the writer and politician Miklós Bánffy, who died 60 years ago this month, the only horror in the bucolic landscape of his native territory (then Hungarian, but soon to revert to Romania) was the blind frivolity of his fellow Hungarian landowners, the consequences of whose refusal to face the future in the years before the first world war led to calamity and imperial collapse. His best known work, The Transylvanian Trilogy, (also known, for self-evident reasons, as The Writing on the Wall) charts this glittering spiral of decline with the frustrated regret of a politician who had tried to alert Hungary's ruling classes to the pressing need for change and accommodation. Patrician, romantic and in the context of the times a radical, Bánffy combined his politics – he negotiated Hungary's admission to the League of Nations – with running the state theatres and promoting the work of his contemporary, the composer Béla Bartók. Unlike most of his generation, he understood that his class was doomed and Hungary's hold on Transylvania threatened. He never abandoned the hope of reclaiming northern Transylvania but a last desperate bid during the second world war, which involved trying to persuade Romania to abandon the Axis powers, led only to the final destruction of the Bánffy estates.Romaniaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feed

- Guardian Election Daily: Hopes fading for 'rainbow coalition'
The media are camped out in front of parliament desperate for any news of what is going on in the gothic meeting rooms within. The general consensus appears to be that hopes of a deal between Labour and the Liberal Democrats are fading.Michael White joins the quest to find out the shape of Britain's next government with the help of the Guardian's political correspondent Allegra Stratton. On hand to offer their views we have former Downing Street insider Lance Price, Julian Astle of the Liberal Democrat think tank CentreForum, and founder of the Open Democracy website Anthony Barnett. Much of the debate and rumour has been originating from Portcullis House – the office complex adjoining parliament. We stake out the area and hear from Labour MPs including Hilary Benn, Austin Mitchell, Jim Fitzpatrick and Steven Pound. Even old hands like the BBC's Andrew Marr are struggling to find out what is happening behind the closed doors. And, lest we forget, the people who voted for the hung parliament still have no clear idea what the outcome of the election has been. - Ole Schmidt obituary
Danish composer and conductor with a reputation for championing the unfamiliarAlthough he was best known as a conductor, Ole Schmidt, who has died aged 81, first came to public notice in his native Denmark as a composer of ballets, composing three in fairly rapid succession in the 1950s: The Fire-maker (Ildmageren, 1952), Behind the Curtain (Bag 。æppet, 1954) and Fever (Feber, 1957). Schmidt's outstanding talent on the conductor's rostrum – he had studied with Sergiu Celibidache and Rafael Kubelik – was showcased at the premiere of the third of these and the following year he took up the post of conductor at Copenhagen's Royal theatre, which he relinquished only in 1965.Following posts with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (1969-70) and the Danish Radio Sinfonietta (1971-73), Schmidt made the leap to international prominence as a conductor in 1974 when he recorded the six Nielsen symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra for the London-based record label Unicorn. These revelatory recordings, much reissued and still available, remain the benchmark for all later Nielsen cycles and won the Carl Nielsen prize in 1975.Engagements from around the world, the UK and North America not least, raised his profile further: he became principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark (1978-85) and later was permanent guest conductor of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and principal guest conductor of the Toledo Symphony in Ohio. However, Schmidt followed his own unconventional, maverick star, maintaining a reputation as a champion of the unfamiliar. In Britain this was shown by his 1980 performance with 800 musicians of Havergal Brian's first symphony, The Gothic (at the instigation of his composer friend, Robert Simpson, musical adviser on the Nielsen
- Tim Burton to head Cannes film festival jury
Batman Returns and Charlie and the Choclate Factory director to lead Cannes festival juryJust as Hollywood succumbs to its annual pre-Oscar tension and Britain to its Bafta jitters, the Cannes festival has contributed to the seasonal film fever by announcing the name of its jury president for this year: Tim Burton. The tousle-haired 51-year-old director of dark and cult classics such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, has it in his power to make or break the reputations of auteurs everywhere.Burton – whose partner is the British screen star Helena Bonham Carter, with whom he has homes in London and Los Angeles – was a member of the Cannes jury in 1997 and on the short film jury in 2006. His biopic of the crazed B-movie supremo Ed Wood Jr, premiered at Cannes in 1995, again starred Depp, the pulchritudinous actor who is something between Burton's muse and dapper alter ego.In a way, Burton is the perfect Cannes president. He looks like every American's view of a Euro-intellectual (dishevelled, black shades), is but also a very Europeanised Hollywood film director, with his intensively designed and sepulchrally atmospheric Goth-type pictures, in which Depp is a regular performer. His next film, Alice In Wonderland, starring Depp as the Mad Hatter and out in two months, will underline his reputation as a film-maker with a very personal style.Aspirant film-makers should however beware. Jury presidents at Cannes tend to be very self-conscious about giving prizes to films that look like something they could have made. Dark, moody films starring people in eyeliner who look like Depp, probably won't make the grade.
