100,000 in Polish capital at risk of having homes flooded after 14 dies following delugeSome 100,000 residents of Warsaw risk having their homes flooded by the Vistula river, the mayor of the Polish capital has warned as the nationwide death toll from the deluge rose to 14.People must be ready to flee if the situation worsens, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz said. Schools were closed and a major road was blocked. The river has breached its bank in one spot, but damage was limited in the uninhabited area.Poland is suffering its worst flooding in decades, hitting the south last week after heavy rains engorged rivers leading north towards the Baltic sea.Rescuers are struggling to strengthen the banks of the river, while sappers have blasted part of an embankment near the central village of Dobrzykow to prevent water from reaching residential areas.Some 4,000 people and 5,000 animals were evacuated from their homes around the nearby city of Plock, after the Vistula burst its banks and inundated 20,000 acres .Poland's interior ministry said it had assigned 152m zlotys (£32m) for people hardest hit by the flood and each household would receive 6,000 zlotys to secure basic supplies of food and clothing. The prime minister, Donald Tusk, said his government would discuss possible additional aid for flood victims tomorrow.
