A Polish electrician spent 18 days 'lost' in a Brazilian airport. Tell us about the times you've found yourself out of your depthOne rather hapless Polish traveller should by now be safely back in Europe after spending 18 days in Brazil – in São Paulo airport.Robert Wladyslaw Parzelski, a London-based car electrician, became a national curiosity after he turned up on a one-way ticket for a business errand, unable to speak the language, and sat down on a concrete bench to wait for someone who never arrived. He waited for a total of 18 days before concerned Brazilians got him on a flight home. While reports are yet to ascertain Parzelski's deeper thoughts or purpose, what do you make of his calm acceptance of his situation – leavened with two bottles of vodka and a makeshift toilet?Have you ever been caught in situations helplessly out of your depth, and how did you react? - Why Bangladesh doesn't want climate adaptation loans | Rezaul Karim Chowdhury
By pushing climate loans, the UK and the World Bank are making people in poor countries pay twice for climate change – even though we played almost no part in causing the problemThis week in Cape Town, the World Bank will decide whether to approve new climate adaptation loans for five countries. In Bangladesh and around the world, campaigners are resisting these loans and urging their governments not to accept new debt for climate change. More than 50 organisations from countries due to receive the loans recently signed a statement opposing the concept of climate loans, which was initially invented by the UK.In Bangladesh we have already seen the impacts of climate change, with thousands of lives lost and thousands of people displaced. By pushing climate loans, the UK is making people in countries like mine pay twice for climate change, even though we played virtually no part in causing the problem.First, we have to endure the impacts. Bangladesh will lose around one-third of its land and there will be 30 million more displaced people due to climate induced problems in next 50 years. Second, if rich industrialised countries get their way, we will have to repay these unfair climate loans.Countries such as the UK are historically responsible for causing climate change. By 11 January each year, the average UK citizen will emit as much as the average Bangladeshi will in an entire year. Industrialised countries not only bear the historic responsibility for climate change, but also current responsibility. They should be providing compensation to the countries where people are dealing with the impacts of climate change caused by the actions of others.Offering Bangladesh climate loans through the World Bank is a form of trickery that will push us deeper into poverty, with no me _NULL_

- Letters: Colombia must improve human rights
The British government's commitment to place human rights at the heart of foreign policy must not be forgotten as Colombia's President Santos (Colombian president heads Civets nations to drum up trade with Britain, 20 November) meets with David Cameron this week. Their mutual goal of deepening trade alliances is not achievable at present without the downgrading of human rights.Colombia has one of the worst records on human rights and kills more trade unionists than any other country. Every day human rights defenders and those who stand up to protect their land rights in the face of increasing national and multinational investment in agro-industry and extractives receive death threats and are often murdered. Santos's public statements in favour of human rights and a law to restore land to some of Colombia's victims distinguish his government from previous administrations. There are approximately 5.2 million internally displaced people in Colombia from over 16.3m acres. However, this administration has seen a worsening environment for those working on land and victims issues. Santos's first year in office has seen more than 250,000 newly displaced people (2010), 54 human rights defenders killed, more than 250 disappeared, and one attacked every 36 hours (2011).The British government must, of course, support commitments to human rights, but these must be implemented before the UK enters into deeper trading relations with Colombia – not least because of the grave danger of supporting the legalisation of illegal land grabs from the poorest and most disadvantaged.Louise Winstanley Programme and advocacy manager, ABColombia, Chris Bain Director, Cafod (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development), Justin Kilcullen Director, Trócaire, David Huey Country director, Oxfam G null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Q&A: Keystone XL oil pipeline
The Keystone XL project will link Canada's tar sands to refineries in Texas – but there are serious environmental concernsWhat is the Keystone XL?The Keystone XL project would expand an existing pipeline from the vast tar sands of Alberta to refineries in the US Midwest, nearly doubling the initial capacity and transporting crude oil deeper into America to refineries on the Gulf coast of Texas. Its proposed route would stretch about 1,660 miles, connecting Hardisty, Alberta to Port Arthur, Texas. It was first proposed in 2008, and was originally scheduled for completion in 2013.What makes it different from other pipelines? There are already about 2.3 million miles of pipeline across the US, carrying oil and natural gas. But the tar sands produce bitumen, which has a much higher carbon footprint than conventional oil. There are also concerns about safety, in addition to climate change. Tar sands oil is heavier and more corrosive than conventional oil; critics say that means a bigger risk of pipeline leaks. Why are people opposed to the pipeline? Some environmental groups are opposed to the pipeline because it will tie America even more deeply into a highly polluting source of energy. But there are growing concerns about pipeline leaks, and the safety record of the company behind the project, TransCanada. The first stage of Keystone had 14 accidents in its first year of operation. Protesters in Nebraska are also worried about the routing of the pipeline; it would cross the Ogallala Aquifer, an important source of irrigation and drinking water. What are arguments in favour of the pipeline?TransCanada and other energy companies, as well as some major trades unions, argue that the pipeline project would create as many as 20,000 construction jobs. - Belgian's political odd couple may stick | Khaled Diab
The joining of unionists and Flemish nationalists could end the impasse and even bring the world's first openly gay male premierSometimes living in Belgium can be a surreal and somewhat comic-book experience. With the economy haemorrhaging jobs, inequalities widening and an empty treasury looted by the banks, how has the government been occupying itself for the past three years? In contrast to their mostly moderate voters, Belgium's Flemish and Walloon parties have been engaged in a bitter and Byzantine war of words over language and an obscure electoral turf war – over whether or not to split the Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde electoral district – which matters to few outside the political class.Since the 2007 elections, one fragile coalition after another has risen and fallen over these petty issues, with the final nail in the coffin coming in April this year.Of course, I am well aware that these are partly proxy disputes for deeper historical grievances between the country's two main communities, bolstered by the regional economic divide, which largely parallels the language fault lines and has prompted many in now-wealthy Flanders to seek to stem the flow of resources to now-poorer Wallonia.Nevertheless, there is a touch of fiddling while Rome burns about this fixation on secondary issues, and I can't help but suspect these seemingly manufactured crises are being used to distract from government inaction on issues that really matter, such as creating jobs and steering a course out of the current economic crisis. So, it was with a sense of foreboding that we headed to the polls last weekend. And, with Flanders's growing shift to the right and the disarray among Flemish progressives and the air of corruption and nepotism surrounding Walloon socialists, voting almost felt like 組合員とフランドル民族主義の行き詰まりを終了でき、参加も世界初の同性愛男性premierSometimesベルギーに住んでもたらすことができ、ややコミックの経験シュール
- Libya need not repeat others' mistakes
The liberators of Libya face many pitfalls in rebuilding the nation – but there are grounds for cautious optimismIf generals fight the last war, then diplomats prepare for the last peace. The shadow of Iraq's postwar chaos hangs uneasily over Libya's interregnum. But it is precisely the fear of urban chaos that is one of the reasons for cautious optimism as the Transitional National Council (TNC), the rebels' political body, prepares to make the transition from rebellion to rule.Britain and France know that a mismanaged process would represent a foreign-policy catastrophe. Scores of foreign advisers have therefore been working with the rebels to address the issues that plagued Baghdad after the war, such as the outbreak of criminality and provision of public services.Despite the cartoonish picture of the rebels as a feckless rabble, planning for the aftermath probably exceeds that of the Americans in 2003.It is true that the rebels are overconfident. After numerous false or exaggerated statements, their claims warrant appropriate scepticism. But they have been vindicated in important respects, such as the success of their prearranged agreements to have the crucial Mohammed Megrayef Brigade stand aside upon Tripoli's fall. That undoubtedly prevented considerable bloodshed. The TNC has wisely pledged to work with the existing police force, and has ordered it to return to the streets – a litmus test of whether a body established 500 miles (800km) away can appropriate existing structures of government.Deeper fault lines remain. The Berbers, a non-Arab ethnic-minority group that performed much of the most decisive fighting, have suffered decades of repression. The NTC must strike a delicate balance. - US economy is in a deep hole - but can the debt crisis be averted?
Whether there will now be an outbreak of bipartisan harmony in the face of looming economic disaster remains to be seenAt first glance, the US growth figures are a horror story. Activity in the world's biggest economy grew much more slowly than expected in the three months, with consumer spending particularly weak.Nor does the data get much better on second reading. Washington has revised down its estimates for growth not just in late 2010 and early 2011 but during 2008 and 2009 when the country was in the middle of its most serious downturn since John Steinbeck was writing the Grapes of Wrath. The peak to trough fall in ouptut is now put at 5.1% against the 4.1% previously estimated. Wall Street trembled when it heard the news that in the first six months of this year the US grew by just 0.4%, slower even than austerity Britain. There is, possibly, a silver lining to the cloud. News that the US economy is in much poorer shape than anybody imagined ought to concentrate the minds of Republicans and Democrats wrangling over whether to raise the US debt ceiling. Even before the announcement of the GDP figures, it was clear the US could ill afford a protracted stalemate over budgetary policy. The risks of messing with the credit rating agencies are even greater now than they were yesterday.Whether there will now be an outbreak of bipartisan harmony in the face of looming economic disaster remains to be seen. On past form, it is possible that the warring factions will simply dig themselves deeper into their entrenched positions. Democrats will look at the growth figures and point to the depressed state of consumer spending, flat over the quarter, and the negative contribution made by government spending. They will argue that it would be foolish to tighten fiscal policy now, a _NULL_

- When we protect our trade we harm Africa | Leader
The G20 summit's vague promises will do nothing to alleviate the ills besetting poorer nationsEvery world leader attending the G20 summit in Seoul last week knew that the global economy faces more perilous turbulence. They knew also that co-operation between them is the best defence. But they achieved almost nothing. There are ways to dress up their deliberations as progress. They agreed to try to disagree less. But the task was to avert a slide into hostile trade competition. It was a financial peace conference and, on most measures, it failed. The risks that follow are immense. The discord at the heart of the summit was between the US and China. It centres on accusations of currency manipulation. Each side wants its exports to be cheaper abroad and fears the effect of foreign competition on manufacturing jobs at home. The dollar-renminbi exchange rate has become the proxy for a strategic stand-off between two economic superpowers. The G20 summit produced flimsy promises of restraint. Before the global crisis, it seemed as if the world was in a virtuous cycle of ever-deeper economic integration, leading to more efficient flows of money, cheaper goods, easy access to credit and higher living standards. The benefits of that globalisation were not evenly shared around the world and the structural instabilities it contained were brutally exposed by the credit crunch. But the economic injustices of the boom years will not be undone if the integration process goes into reverse – they will be compounded.Financial collapse was averted in 2008 by an effort of collaboration between world leaders. But the esprit de corps provoked by imminent catastrophe has gone. It's a funny thing about consumers. They are actually people, cleverly disguised as demographics, or target groups, or organized by complex algorithms into clever names like "savvy shopaholics" or “sales savants.” The reason this nagging point is important is that people, when they are wearing their consumer hat, don't silo brand experience. This is a nuance that is critical for brands to understand as they engage with customers, and can easily get lost as marketers and brand managers get deeper inside understanding what those customers really want. それは消費者がおかしなことだ
- Father Austin Smith obituary
The Catholic church of St Anne's in Liverpool was full to overflowing for the funeral of my friend Father Austin Smith, who has died aged 82. He was a complex, learned man, acutely aware of the political climate and yet rooted in his native city which had suffered the decline and dismantling of communities. In October 1971, Austin established the Passionist Inner City Mission in Toxteth. He continued to be a much loved and active presence in the Liverpool 8 district for the following 40 years. His influence extended far beyond. For many years, Austin was assistant chaplain at Walton prison. It was only ill-health that forced his retirement after 14 years' service.Born in Liverpool, one of two sons of Jim and Josephine Smith, he was educated by the Christian Brothers, and joined the Passionist religious order in his early teens. Pursuing his interest in philosophy and church social teaching, he began to earn a national reputation as a preacher and lecturer and was closely involved with Young Christian Workers and Young Christian Student movements in the 1960s.Then, encouraged by the fresh vitality after the Second Vatican Council, Austin made the choice not to settle in the comfort of monastic life, but began to articulate and propose new ways to reach out to people in places stigmatised as marginal. With the blessing of his congregation, he established the Passionist mission in Toxteth. His contribution to the struggle to overcome racism is well documented. Significantly, in 1981, during the Toxteth riots, Austin played a positive and pivotal role in articulating the deeper issues that were at play. He was uniquely placed to act as a go-between for the local community, the church hierarchy and the city leaders. He was a modest man, unimpressed by power or authority, sensi リバプールのセントアンズのカトリック教会は82歳で死亡した私の友人の父オースティンスミス、の葬儀のためにあふれに満ちていました

- Tucson memorial: Obama's moment | Editorial
It was his finest speech as president, while the Republicans dug themselves even deeper into the hole they have climbed intoBarack Obama has just made the finest speech of his presidency. It is not just that, in performing the role of pastor to the victims of the shootings in Arizona, he shed his professorial reserve and became the empathetic head of state that everyone who crammed the National Mall on his inauguration expected him to be. Nor did his speech contain memorable phrases. It was that, after two bruising years in power, Mr Obama has at last found his voice. He did so by rediscovering the themes that made him an outstanding presidential candidate. If he can set a tone not just for Tucson and the aftermath of Saturday's dreadful events, but nationally and for the rest of his presidency, this will be the change we can believe in.The Republican camp, by contrast, dug themselves even deeper into the hole they have climbed into. If Mr Obama's tone was inspired, Sarah Palin's was calamitous from the perspective of a party knowing it has to capture the centre ground to return to power. Not only did she sound defensive and angry (undoing the effect of the presidential props on and behind her). In rifling through her pill case for yet another dose of hyperbole, she stumbled over the concept of a blood libel.Blood libel? Can a Fox News commentator in the 21st century, in any conceivable way, compare her situation as a victim of a slur to that of Jews who were persecuted, forced to convert and massacred in 12th-century England as religious fervour during the Crusades reached its peak? Israel's position was fully supported by the Bush administration. We've extracted the key data for you from this document - which outlines the places Palestinian negotiators were willing to negotiate over. Our map (shown above) is based on a background image from B'Tselem, which produces incredibly detailed maps of the area - the same map seems to have been used in the leaked document.A Google Fusion tables map of the areas shows how they are in the most hotly-contested part of the region - although Fusion tables does not appear to have any roads or town names for Israel. - Should Oxbridge discriminate to boost the numbers of black students?
Reports last week revealed that 20 Oxbridge colleges failed to offer places to black applicantsNo, says writer and broadcaster Sarfraz ManzoorThis is a deeply flawed, if well-intentioned, proposal. It is easy to cast Oxbridge as the villains in the story. The dominance of Oxford and Cambridge alumni in politics, media, the law and so on is well-known; this week's figures on the starkly low levels of black students merely gave empirical evidence for what many had long suspected. But thinking quotas will improve the lack of diversity is like believing liposuction will solve obesity: it may make a cosmetic difference but for lasting change we need to look a little deeper.I grew up in a family where my father worked on the production line at a car factory and I went to a comprehensive from where less than 10 students in my year even went on to sixth-form college. The idea of studying at Oxbridge was not even a pipe-dream for someone like me, so I never applied and I did not go. A recent report by the Office for Fair Access revealed that intelligent children from the richest 20% of homes in England were seven times more likely to attend a high-ranking university than intelligent children from the poorest 40%. If we want elite institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge to be drawing more students from diverse backgrounds, we need to absorb the fact that the link between economic background and educational attainment is evident as early as 22 months. This hints at what is my main worry about the prospect of positive discrimination for black students. It seems to me that the real failure here is rooted in a lack of class diversity, and black students are merely one of the victims of that. White working-class students are similarly under-represented. The most damning sta レポートは、最後の週20オックスブリッジのカレッジは、黒applicantsNoする場所を提供するために失敗したことを明らかにした、作家、放送Sarfraz ManzoorThisは深く、もし善意、欠陥のある提案であると言います

- We mustn't abandon the Windward Islands' farmers | Renwick Rose and Nick Mathiason
Hurricanes, drought and disease have devastated the eastern Caribbean banana industry, and Europe should support the region's farmers through this difficult timeThe destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas in the Caribbean in recent weeks is heartbreaking. But although the destruction in Haiti received media coverage, Tomas's intensity was reserved for the eastern Caribbean. A spiralling storm lingered over St Lucia. The deluge created terrible landslides, cutting off the south of the island. The damage is similar in St Vincent and Dominica. Now we are facing up to the total destruction of the Windward Islands' rural economy. Tomas has ripped up virtually every banana tree in St Lucia and St Vincent where the entire crop has been wiped out. Coconuts, cocoa and breadfruit are also all gone.Farmers who rely on bananas face an economic disaster, and a food emergency is looming. They will have no income for at least eight months, until the next harvest. That is if they can afford to replant trees.Parents are also agonising over whether they can afford to enter their children for the summer exams. Entry fees are due in January.Agriculture is the motor of the Windward Islands' rural economy. It accounts for 9.75% of GDP, according to the IMF. It is the largest form of employment in the countryside, away from the tourist areas. And earnings from bananas allow shops and small business to survive.Farmers are relying on the compassion of banks to allow them to keep their homes. They are likely to get deeper in debt.Tomas caps one of the worst ever years for Windward farmers. The financial crisis in the Caribbean is stark. - Turkish troops' incursion may raise tensions
Incursion may trigger protests from Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdish region, especially if it is prolongedFour Kurdish rebels died after hundreds of elite Turkish troops chased them into northern Iraq in an operation that may increase tensions with Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region. The guerrillas were on the run after a failed attack on a Turkish unit near the border, the Turkish military said. It did not say when the troops, who were supported by military aircraft, would withdraw.Iraqi Kurds have been co-operating with Turkey in its fight against the rebels but the incursion may trigger protests from Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdish region, especially if it is prolonged. The military said on its website that three commando companies and one special forces battalion penetrated 2 miles (3 kilometers) into Iraq. Turkish warplanes also pounded Kurdish rebel positions and mortar and anti-aircraft units deeper inside Iraqi territory on Wednesday, the military said. The website claimed that the offensive was ordered after the rebels attempted an unsuccessful attack on troops near the Turkish border town of Uludere. The Turkish military estimates around 4,000 rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, are based just across the border in Iraq and that about 2,500 operate inside Turkey.Last month, Turkey killed at least 19 Kurdish rebels in an airstrike on rebel hideouts in northern Iraq.Earlier this month, Turkey offered greater economic cooperation with Iraqi Kurds, pressuring the region's president, Massoud Barzani, to jointly combat Turkish Kurdish rebel hideouts in northern Iraq that the rebels have used as a springboard for attacks.Turkey also wants Iraqi Kurds to shut down the Makhmur refugee camp, which houses an estimated 10,000-11,000 Turkish Kurds who fled to Iraq in t

- New to Nature No 12: Malacobelemnon daytoni
A new sea pen has been discovered by divers in AntarcticaA new species of sea pen collected by divers off King George Island, in the South Shetlands off the Antarctic peninsula, extends our understanding of these relatives of corals and anemones. Malacobelemnon daytoni occurs at shallower depths than most sea pens. The population seems to be increasing, becoming more abundant in deeper water, possibly because they thrive in conditions of heavy silt related to glacial melt. Although not true of this new colonial species, the common name sea pen comes from related forms that are featherlike, resembling quill pens. The first specimens to reach taxonomic experts resulted from collaborative ecological research by Argentinian and Spanish scientists. Previous species in the genus were known from Australia and south-eastern Africa. - Yoga expert: 'It seems idiotic they can patent it'
Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati argues that Indian government's attempt to create a rigid system of yoga misses the pointThe 64,000 postures form only a tiny part of yoga. Poses are not an end in themselves, but a preparation for deeper, more meaningful practices. The word yoga means oneness and unity – unity with the self. Discover who you are, and then that can give you a sense of oneness with others and ultimately the whole of creation, and the divine.Poses are not the definition of yoga, which consists of breathing practices, deep relaxation, and meditative practices – not just postures. There's a whole yoga to do with mantras, another to do with music.I would definitely give anyone trying to patent any postures a very wide berth. They haven't invented anything. The practices and traditions of yoga go back thousands of years. At best, we are interpreters of ancient wisdom. The patenting and filming of specific positions is distressing. Yoga is a huge body of knowledge and practice, and you can't patent such a large entity, let alone a very small percentage of it.Nor is it the preserve of India alone. Yes, it It has been nurtured for many centuries by the monastic and guru traditions in India, but statues and paintings depicting yoga practices have been discovered all over the world. In Colombia, there are statues of people sitting in yoga positions, and adopting breathing and meditative practices, so yoga is broader than just Indian and it seems absolutely idiotic that they can patent it.In fact, I'm distressed at the way things have developed in recent years. When yoga first became popular in the 60s in the western world, it was about an expansion of consciousness. We were looking for deeper truth. - Oops, we forgot Jesus's women | Stephen Tomkins
The pope's new book, The Friends of Jesus, doesn't mention any of his female associates. It's a telling omissionWas it a hilarious howler or does he simply not like women? The pope's new children's book, The Friends of Jesus, tells the stories of 14 of Jesus's closest friends, but omitted to include any women, despite Jesus's celebrated friendship with several of the less Catholic sex, especially Mary Magdalene. On the plus side, there is something refreshing about the Vatican's attitude to PR and spin, which is either that they are the machinations of Beelzebub, or they simply haven't heard of them yet. You can't imagine the head of any other west European state publishing a book without teams of Malcolm Tuckers scribbling all over it in red marker pens to bring it on-message.Benedict may not be a law unto himself exactly, but he clearly doesn't have his work shredded by a filter of tick boxes. One of the many benefits of not needing anyone's votes ever again. We saw the same thing earlier this year when the Vatican newspaper published a list of the 10 greatest albums ever, all long hair and guitar solos. No inclusivity, no internationalism, no coolness, and outside of Fleetwood Mac, what do you know, not a single woman. It was clearly not a PR exercise, just a bunch of stuff that some old duffer in the Vatican actually liked. But when you get past the retro charm of Rome's attitude to inclusion, it reminds you that there was and is a point to political correctness, which is that it discourages people from being ignorant idiots. Musical lists are a harmless enough pursuit, but the attitudes of world religions to sex and the sexes is rather less harmless. Top 10 albums are one thing, but when Rome compiles lists of the top one sex, the exclusion bites rather deeper.Inclusi 法王の新しい本は、友達イエスの、いずれかの彼の女性の仲間の言及していない
- Andean voices: Jiovanny Rivadenaira
Community leader Jiovanny Rivadenaira, of Kichwa Anago, Napo river, Ecuador, talks to John VidalWe emphatically do not want to work with the oil companies any more. None of our community will ever do so again. We don't like them because they contaminate our land, soil and water and they bring climate change. We are famous for fighting them. When they first came many people went to them to find work. But the companies have brought nothing but problems like oil spills and polluted water. These days we see the sun when our knowledge says it should be raining. We have seen the climate change. We say that Mother Earth is sick. So, in response to this climate change and the oil companies, we have turned to tourism. With the help of a foundation in Quito we have built a wildlife centre and a lodge. We rotate the work and everyone in the community gets $250 a month when they work. About 70 people work there at any one time, but 170 families directly benefit and 2,000 do so indirectly. We get around 250 tourists a month and they are welcome. Our target is 280 but we never want more than 300. We don't want or need more people. The money we earn from the community hotel pays for the school, and computers, as well as health needs. That's all we need.We are considering opening another lodge, deeper into the forest. Life is better without oil. It makes you want more of everything. Plus some of the comments about the summit coming through on Twiter.Kirsty Wright, climate campaigner, World Development MovementAs we move into the second week of negotiations, Cancún looks destined to be a repeat of the catastrophe we saw in Copenhagen. Developing countries currently have little to be optimistic about. WikiLeaks confirmed that the UK has been lobbying for climate finance to be provided as loans through the much-loathed World Bank, instead of grants through the more democratic UN. Unless the UK and other rich countries have a wholesale change of heart, millions of people will be locked into deeper debt and poverty, as well as a climate crisis they have no historical responsibility for causing. There are also serious concerns about the ever decreasing space for civil society. We are far from an outcome that has justice at its heart.Bill Mckibben, founder of 350.orgAs usual, almost all the pressure is on the developing countries in week one of these talks. America's ongoing attempt to cast itself as a poor country (or China and India as rich ones) dominates most of the discussion - the pressure is on to scrap Kyoto's two-track system and make
- Pakistan's problem is deeper than match fixing | Mustafa Qadri
Amid Pakistan's general lawlessness, is it any wonder that cricketers have lost their way?In Pakistan, cricket is a matter of special pride. Cricketers have for decades been ambassadors for a more positive image of the country and a source of hope and enjoyment for those whose everyday life is both difficult and joyless. In Pakistan, we are generally averse to public displays of hedonism, except when it comes to food (in private, of course, all bets are off). But success, or failure, in cricket provides most Pakistanis with an opportunity to express themselves in ways that would normally risk censure. When our cricket team wins, people literally dance on the street. When they lose, the effigies start burning. The hot and cold of public affection breeds a certain kind of fatalism in our elite athletes, not to mention the super-rich. When the going is good, squeeze every ounce of good fortune lest it run out tomorrow. That attitude has a lot to do with the poisonous tolerance for match-fixing that has engulfed Pakistani cricket since the 1980s.Another, ironically, is that cricket is no longer merely an elite pursuit but a ticket to unimaginable riches for some of the poorest citizens. In the past, cricketers came from the educated suburbs of the big Punjabi cities. Today, they come from the humblest of backgrounds. Mohammad Yousuf, one of the greatest, most elegant batsmen the country has produced, is the son of a Christian rail-station sweeper from Sargodha in the Punjab heartland. His gifts come not from sporting academies, but nature and the rough and tumble world of street cricket.Much like the country, Yousuf went through something of an Islamisation. After converting to Islam he lost contact with his Christian family, but his career took off. Sadly, a decade of match- パキスタンの一般的な無法の中で、それを任意の不思議なことクリケットは自分の道を失っている何ですか?パキスタンでは、クリケットは、特別な誇りの問題です

- 7/7 has brought communities closer | Shaaz Mahboob
The crimes of 7 July 2005 backfired and have brought moderation and good sense to the foregroundThe actions of four calculating murderers on the morning of 7th July 2005 brought misery and mayhem for countless ordinary innocent Londoners and their families. However, in spite of their crimes, they can almost singlehandedly take credit for bringing British communities closer to each other. Since this date, enormous changes have touched the lives of the British public, and in particular those of the two million or so Muslims for whom this country is home.A new political era has dawned upon Britain, bringing with it a series of fundamental changes affecting almost everyone on these isles. The anniversary of 7/7 seems to be an appropriate time to pause and take stock of the past five years, especially in relation to community relations and to review its prospects in the years to come. One common intention between the 7/7 bombers, groups such as Islam4UK and arguably the EDL, was to sow the seeds of discord and instil fear as a wedge between Muslim and non-Muslim communities. However what is overwhelmingly evident is that by and large, they failed to do so. Insulting stunts such as those organised against the repatriation of soldiers from Afghanistan or depicting the wishful future of Buckingham Palace as a mega mosque have not only been laughed off collectively by the British public, but for the first time in British history, Islamic extremism has been successfully challenged by moderate elements from within the Muslim communities, resulting in extremists losing face in public. This not only goes to show the diversity and resilience of British communities but also highlights the fact that community cohesion in Britain is much deeper and more integral to the fabric of our s 7月は2005年裏目に出た7犯罪と節度と2005年7月7日の朝、無数普通の罪のない、ロンドンとその家族の苦痛と騒乱をもたらしたの4つの計算殺人のforegroundTheアクションに良識を持っている

- Oxfam tells the UN we need action to feed the hungry, not words
A lengthy document is in circulation, drafted for world leaders to sign at the UN's Millennium Development Goals summit in New York. But Oxfam is calling on participants to deliver more than fine words to help the poorJust over a week to go to the big showpiece summit at the United Nations in New York. Government leaders, officials, industry bosses and many, many NGOs will convene to assess progress towards reaching the eight Millennium Development Goals agreed by the G8 in 2000. The endpoint is 2015 - just five years to go.And the tension is rising. So many people want this meeting to be significant. There has been real progress on some of the MDGs, but there is so far to go, and economic recession is going to make the donors think twice before getting into deeper financial commitments. But the prospect of a meaninglessly worthy three days provoked an outburst from Oxfam today. In the way of major governmental meetings, officials have been working on the document that the leaders will all sign for some considerable time. It is now 26 pages long and detailed and thoughtful. Who could argue with this, for instance? We recognize that progress, including on poverty eradication, is being made despite setbacks, including due to the financial and economic crises. In this context, we recognize the deeply inspiring examples of progress made by countries in all regions of the world through cooperation, partnerships, actions and solidarity. We are deeply concerned, however, that the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger surpasses one billion and that inequalities between and within countries remains a significant challenge. We are also deeply concerned about the alarming global levels of maternal and child mortality. - Greek bailout looks suspiciously like a sticking plaster
That's that, then. The Greece problem is fixed and it's back to the races. This, at least, is the conclusion suggested by the stock market's behaviour. The FTSE 100 index is an imperfect guide, but provides a striking illustration. In early February, the index fell to 5060 when it seemed as if Greece's woes would be infectious and hard to solve. Several companies were so scared by the price volatility they scrapped flotation plans. Today, after the eurozone members patched together an aid package for Greece, the FTSE 100 closed at 5727 – a 13% gain in seven weeks if your timing was perfect. In the same period, the economic news has been so-so; it's been a story of a massive rebound in investors' confidence. So you might assume the eurozone members had found a formula that guarantees Greece's problems won't spread and that harmony will prevail when it comes to tackling deeper issues – such as how to stimulate growth in a region with huge trade imbalances. The facts indicate the exact opposite. There have been bitter rows over whether to involve the International Monetary Fund in Greece. Critically, for the first time in decades, deep divisions have opened up between Germany and France. Berlin stands by tough principles; Paris prefers pragmatism. The net result is that the remedy offered to Greece – a combination of IMF assistance and loans from member states – looks suspiciously like a temporary sticking plaster. For now, however, markets appear happy to celebrate the fact that the worst fears about Greece's debt crisis have not been realised immediately. That seems perversely cheerful; the eurozone looks a dysfunctional place, which wasn't the case a few months ago.GreeceEuropeNils Pratleyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subj _NULL_

- Mugabe inflames the Afro-pessimists, but Zimbabwe's story is much deeper | Petina Gappah
For all the nightmarish events of the last decade, my country has much to celebrate as we mark 30 years of independenceThirty years ago on Sunday the renegade British colony that had been Rhodesia was born as Zimbabwe. In the nightmarish events of the last 10 years the euphoria of that day has been all but lost. Certainly, the achievements of Zimbabwe in the last 30 years are in danger of drowning in the mire of statistics about rampant inflation and unemployment, in images of the political repression of a cowed populace – all taken as evidence by those Thabo Mbeki calls the Afro-pessimists. For his part, President Mugabe has certainly provided much grist to the mill of the brigade that believes Africans cannot rule themselves and that independence has achieved nothing worth celebrating. As Zimbabwe turns 30, however, there are significant achievements to celebrate. Independence itself was one, especially as it brought the end of an apartheid-in-miniature that had allowed a small white minority to enjoy benefits not available to the black majority. Rhodesia's segregationist policy was grievously unjust; but children born in Zimbabwe would no longer have their life paths determined simply because of the colour of their skin.Independence came through a civil war in which tens of thousands died, and many more people were displaced. Following this, Mugabe – then prime minister – urged former combatants to turn their swords to ploughshares, and white and black to work together to build a new nation. The reconciliation policy at the time did much to allay fears of reprisals, and put Zimbabwe on a path to stability and prosperity. The chief achievement of the country's prosperous early years, one bearing fruit even today, came from the massive investment in education. - My travels: Rankin on South Africa
The photographer was swept up by the energy and spirituality of an extraordinary Christian ritual cleansing ceremony in Johannesburg's Soweto townshipImages from Rankin's exhibition and book, RANKINJOZISouth Africa is an incredible country, and one that has always captivated me. It is a country of unquestionable beauty, but beyond the natural majesty, it is a melting pot of social, religious and cultural diversity. I don't think I can ever even scratch the surface of this intriguing society. Last year, the BBC approached me with an idea for a documentary exploring the country's photographic traditions, and I leapt at the chance to do it. I wanted to learn more about South Africa, and this was the perfect opportunity to dig a little deeper and explore the country through the eyes of its pre-eminent photographers.I spent three months researching the different photographers I would meet on my trip, their own stories and the disciplines they had mastered. While I was intrigued by photographers such as David Goldblatt and Alf Kumalo, it was Greg Marinovich from the Bang Bang Club (a group of photographers active within the townships during the Apartheid period) who I really felt like I struck up a friendship with. He is an incredible person, curious about everything, and fearless.I spent a day with Greg photographing a ritual cleansing in the Klipspruit Stream. The river runs through the Soweto township, and every January, to mark the beginning of the new year, members of the African Zionist Church congregate there to celebrate. Hundreds of people participated throughout the day, and the spirituality was palpable, even when standing at a distance on the banks of the river and observing.Greg was an inspiration – he got straight into the river and snorkelled to get underwater
- Obama to sign nuclear treaty with Russia
• US and Russian presidents arrive in Prague for signing• Arms treaty will slash two countries' nuclear arsenals by a thirdThe US president, Barack Obama, has arrived in Prague in the Czech Republic to sign an arms treaty with Russia that will slash their respective nuclear arsenals by a third. The new treaty, to be signed in mid-morning by Obama and the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, will cut their strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550 over seven years, about a third less than the 2,200 currently allowed.Obama is returning to Prague one year after he outlined his vision before an enthusiastic crowd for a world without nuclear weapons. The speech helped him win the Nobel peace prize, but Obama has acknowledged that eliminating nuclear weapons is unlikely to be achieved during his lifetime. The agreement to reduce nuclear warheads by a third succeeds the 1991 strategic arms reduction treaty (Start), which expired in December. It will have to be ratified by the US Senate – where conservative Republicans can be expected to give it a rough ride – and the Russian parliament. In addition to the warhead limit, the US and Russia must cut their total land, sea and air-based launchers to 800 each, and no more than 700 actually deployed within seven years. While that will leave plenty of nuclear weapons to destroy the world several times over, it marks a big drop from the total of 19,000 strategic warheads both sides deployed during the cold war.Obama wants to move for even deeper cuts but faces Russian reluctance because of American plans to build a missile defence system in Europe to counter a possible Iranian threat. Russia argues that antiballistic missile systems could neutralise its smaller arsenal.Even as Obama pushes for deep cuts in nuclear weapons, the Washington Post re _NULL_
- US, Karzai split over Taliban talks
Differences between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and key officials of the administration of United States President Barack Obama over the issue of talks with the Taliban came to a head at last week's London conference. - We can turn Haiti around | Kofi Annan
Structured support must be given to fragile states in the long term – not just when disaster strikesThe earthquake in Haiti is a tragedy beyond comprehension. It has caused immeasurable human suffering, shattering families, communities and hopes. Among the many thousands who have lost their lives are good friends and close colleagues from the United Nations. I mourn their loss and all those who died in this disaster.Fortunately, humanitarian aid, provided by countries from all across the globe and co-ordinated by the UN, is finally beginning to reach those in need. The immediate priority will for some time remain the provision of medical care, water, food and shelter. But we must also plan now for the longer-term issues of recovery and reconstruction. We must not waste this opportunity, however tragic, to get things right in Haiti. The challenge is to do this in a way that is dignified, provides hope, creates opportunities, and builds the capacity of Haitian authorities. But there is a deeper, more basic, point to make. It should not take a tragedy on this scale to focus on an unacceptable reality that perhaps as many as a billion of our fellow humans live in fragile states. Their plight is an affront to human dignity and will increasingly have consequences for the security and prosperity of us all. There is no single definition of a fragile state, nor any consensus on how many of them there are. What is important is that the absence of effective state institutions and reliable governance mechanisms makes their populations highly susceptible both to domestic and external shocks, be they climatic, disease-related, economic or political.Political instability, wide-spread poverty, and the absence of the rule of law and economic opportunity don't just increase people's vulne 構造化をサポートしやすい状態に長期的に与えられなければならない-だけでなく、ときに、ハイチの災害strikesThe地震の理解を超えて悲劇だ
