My friend Shrinivas Havanur, who has died aged 82, was an authority on the Kannada language, his much-loved mother tongue which is spoken nowadays by some 35 million people in the state of Karnataka, southern India.He was born into a Brahmin family in the village of Havanur. He went on to become librarian of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai before leaving this prestigious post to become professor of Kannada, first at Mumbai University, then at Mangalore University. His research brought him into contact with the Basel Mission, a Protestant society with roots in Switzerland and south-western Germany, whose staff, in the 19th century, had researched the Kannada language and its literature. They had played an important part in transforming it into a language for modern discourse and media.I was archivist of the Basel Mission when Havanur came to me wanting, for his first short stay in Basel, the same kind of 24/7 access he had provided for scholars when he was a research librarian. We came to an understanding that allowed him to work night and day, as he wanted.Since that first visit, we had been firm friends and colleagues. I had no background in Indian studies, and he opened up a whole new world for me, not least in my understanding of the significance of this group of missionaries in the history of Karnataka.Havanur became almost an ambassador-at-large for the Basel Mission in Karnataka, with his pointed, critical but positive judgments about the missionaries' linguistic work in academic publications and the press.In retirement he became an honorary resident member of Karnataka Theological College. Assisted by the college archivist, he produced the definitive computer catalogue of the many Basel Mission publications in his language. While we might be tempted to read such an occasion as a positive cultural exchange, it's more likely the event was spun 180 degrees for North Koreans, who – if they heard about it at all – would have been told something more along the lines that America sent the musical convoy to pacify the Big Bad Leader Kim with their meagre tributes.I remember reading a similar spin tactic in the Pyongyang Times on a flight into the capital last year, on the day after Bill Clinton's reconnaissance trip to free the two imprisoned US journalists caught trespassing at the border. Film industry pundits have noticed a growing trend for producers to consider changing the gender of a starring part in a new film from male to female, usually as a way to attract a bigger name. Most notably, it has been announced that Dame Helen Mirren will be taking the part of the tactful butler in a remake of Arthur, a role originally graced by Sir John Gielgud in the version that starred Dudley Moore as the eponymous drunk. A commentator in Variety earlier this month wondered whether other female film stars now stood to benefit from this sort of gender switch. Don't blame the financial markets. The people have spoken, not the bond marketThere will be scapegoats aplenty over the months ahead about why the attempted Lib-Lab coalition failed at the first, but one cannot be the financial markets. If the stock market fell some 15% over the last fortnight it was not a conspiracy to frighten voters into voting Conservative or Nick Clegg to strike a coalition government deal with David Cameron. It was because there was a real and growing risk that the euro might break up.In the event the $750bn package agreed over the weekend has bought the euro some relief - and if the stock market fell today by 1% it had jumped 5% on Monday in relief at the scale of the package. The interesting feature of the last three months has not been the pound's and gilt markets' weakness - but their relative strength. Given the power of the rating agencies and the stage army of largely conservative inclined City economic analysts what has been surprising is how little rather than how much sabre-rattling about mountainous deficits and debt downgrades there has been – despite an avalanche of reporters hunting for the killer quote. That during the campaign and now over five days of negotiations only a team from BNP Paribas has - rather sillily - talked about a downgrade of UK debt is remarkable. The City has been surprisingly well-behaved.There are two reasons. Firstly, for two or three months the news on the deficit has all been good; the deficit in 2009/10 net of buying the bank stakes is some £155bn, well short of the scary £200bn numbers bandied about before Christmas. The recovery is strengthening. While denouncing Kubrick's most controversial work, Maria was careful to differentiate between a film depicting violence for its own sake and one where it could be contextualised. Where Whitehouse's approach was absolute, Maria believed instead in providing information to viewers and listeners. Indeed, she felt that the violence in films such as The Godfather (which became one of her favourites) could be fully justified by the story.Whitehouse regularly appeared on television, arguing for taste and decency. Maria, however, quietly operated the machinery of the association, engaging in effective diplomacy with figures in the BBFC, BBC and government, and making the case for greater provision of information and education about film and television productions.Her pragmatism may have produced an unspoken tension with Whitehouse. They parted company as campaigners shortly after The Romans in Britain trial of 1982. If, as expected, no single bloc gets a majority in this weekend's Iraqi elections, it could herald an era of interesting alliancesIt has taken countless parliamentary deadlocks, months of political squabbling and various controversies, but on Sunday Iraqis will finally be heading to the polls to cast their vote in yet another post-2003 Iraqi democratic process.Iraq's last parliamentary election in 2005 took place amid a Sunni boycott, violence and terrorist attacks. It was contested on the basis of, and then followed by, sectarianism, old rivalries and the uncertainties of the future. Not this time, though.I have spent the past week travelling all over Iraq. At the time of writing, I had made my way to Kirkuk, having spent the previous night in the holy city of Najaf in the south, and it had become clear at that point that most Iraqis will be voting on the basis of services, security and, notably, nationalism. Sectarianism should now be a thing of the past.For the best part of my trip, support for one man has been accordingly apparent, that being the prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, who will be leading his State of Law (SoL) coalition into the elections. I have spoken with Iraqis from all backgrounds who believe the premier has, over the past few years, injected life back into the Iraqi state.He has been an uncompromising centrist, has liquidated the militias who once gripped society and has overseen the development of a stronger Iraqi army and security force. Indeed, he won the 2009 provincial elections on the basis of his security credentials. And although the country has suffered a spate of bombings in recent months, threatening Maliki's security credentials, there are Iraqis who nevertheless believe he needs more time to finish what he started and will want to see h _NULL_

Ms Karokhail is the chairwoman of the Afghan women parliamentarians and women's rights network. She was a founding member of the Afghan Women's Educational Centre (AWEC) and its director until 2005. She was born in Kabul and trained as a medical doctor there from 1979. She became heavily involved in social work and NGO activities and has worked with street children and vulnerable women.
