    • Reno air crash: 10th person dies
At least 10 others remain in hospital, with one in a critical condition, after plane crashed into spectators at air showA 10th person has died from injuries sustained when a second world war-era fighter crashed near the grandstands at a Nevada air race last week, officials said.Federal safety investigators were trying to determine what caused 74-year-old pilot Jimmy Leeward to lose control of his modified P-51 Mustang and slam into a box seat area at the 48th annual National Air Championship Races on Friday afternoon.A photograph snapped seconds before the crash appears to show a component of the plane's tail section falling off, and National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind said that will be one aspect of the crash that will be investigated intensely.Leeward, a Florida-based real estate developer who was well known in air racing circles and had worked as a stunt pilot in movies, was among the dead. The identity of the latest victim was not released by St Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, where one patient from the accident remains in critical condition and another six are listed as serious. Three people were still in critical condition at Renown Regional Medical Center.More than 50 other people were transported to area hospitals to be treated for injuries.Federal investigators have recovered memory cards that could be from recording devices on the downed plane but say they found no indication yet that Leeward sent out a distress call before plunging into the tarmac. In a development that could help the investigation, Leeward's plane had apparently been equipped with an outward-facing video recorder, and would have also streamed real-time data to the racing team before the crash.A total of 29 people have been killed in the Reno Air Races since they b _NULL_

    • Sticking With An Investment Strategy That's Worked For 35 Years
A little silver for me as I pass 25 years with Al Frank Asset Management while it?s coral or jade for the newsletter as we celebrate our 35th anniversary this month. No doubt, much has changed since Al Frank banged out the inaugural edition of TPS with his 10-inch carriage pica typewriter on March 12, 1977, but the words he penned on the occasion of the newsletter?s first anniversary in March 1978 still ring true. The Zen Master of Money, as Al would be dubbed many years later, said, ?The great gains and losses seem to occur in consequence to individual psychology.?  He expanded, ?The gaps between theory and practice, decision and action, spectating and speculating, require constant vigilance and effort, so that the resolution of these gaps can lead to peace of mind and profit. There is no end to reviewing dogma, received opinion and semantics, which can lead us astray in our analyses, and contribute to stress and distress in playing the market.? null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • The G8 and the euro: make this one count
Europe needs to go in for a proper restructuring of its banking sector along the lines of that executed by Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling in 2008-09History suggests that the last place one would look for the resolution of a crisis is a summit of world leaders. Yet every so often summits can pave the way to a sea change in policy. The G20 meeting in London presided over by Gordon Brown in the spring of 2009 agreed an impressive-sounding trillion dollar boost to the world economy, but more importantly sealed a deal between the leading powers that they would each spend more until the spectre of recession was warded off. Similarly, the first G20 summit that David Cameron attended as prime minister in 2010 marked the point at which Europe and America parted ways on economic policy. Two summits, two opposing results, yet each hugely significant. Let us hope that the G8 meeting kicking into gear in Washington this weekend is of a similar rank of importance. Certainly, the situation Mr Obama and his colleagues confront is potentially even more grave than the one they faced in those early months after Lehman Brothers collapsed. However amazing it is to imagine, it is not hyperbolic to say that the euro stands on the verge of a death spiral – and that there are precious few opportunities left to pull it back from the brink. It is not simply the very real prospect of Greece leaving the single currency; it is also the palpably distressed condition of Spanish banks (as suggested by this week's credit-rating downgrade for 16 of them, and the collapses in their share prices), and of so many others across Europe; plus the long-standing issue that Spain and Italy and a number of other countries are now finding it increasingly difficult to get the loans they need from financial ma null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • America after Osama bin Laden | Andrea LeBlanc
I and my group of 9/11 victims' relatives hope we will take this opportunity to restore the US to the path of justice, not warI did not hear the news Sunday night that Osama bin Laden had been found and killed until a reporter called me at 12.30am to ask for my reaction. I doubt that the killing of another person is ever just cause for celebration, no matter what horrific acts he has committed. Relief, perhaps, that the long hunt was over, but my reaction was not one of jubilation.I wondered how the Muslim world viewed the celebrations here in the US and was reminded of the distressing scenes of public celebration after the attacks on 9/11 in some parts of the world. Bin Laden was the ringleader, the inspiration for many, but his death won't end the threats from al-Qaida. I suspect that he would never have allowed himself to be captured alive. His death has undoubtedly made him a martyr and perhaps will be cause enough for renewed attacks. There are not many things I know to be absolutely true, but one of them is that violence begets violence. I suppose bin Laden's death proves the point. I and my fellow members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows want the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks brought to justice, but we believe justice is achieved in the courtroom, not on the battlefield.I do not seek revenge, but rather justice – and these are two very different things. Bin Laden's death doesn't change the fact that my husband is dead. For nine and a half years, I have been thinking about the human costs of 9/11 – not only the lives that were taken on that day, but all those, military and civilian, who have died since, in two wars, and whose lives are still threatened and being destroyed in the name of 11 September. And I have been thinking about the costs to o

    • Eurozone crisis live: Greece inches towards deal with creditors
Negotiations between Athens government and the International Institute of Finance will resume today, as they edge towards a debt restructuring deal8.20am: Another analyst who is regularly quoted in these parts, Michael Hewson at CMC Markets, agrees that Portugal is sneaking up on the rails in terms of danger to the eurozone but he also gives a neat summary of where we are with the Greek talks.Talks are set to continue today with speculation that they had given ground on the coupon to 3.75%, but there has been no confirmation of this so far. The offer is also above the 3.5% demanded by the Greek government and the EU, which is needed to get the debt to GDP ratio down to a more sustainable level by 2020.8.06am: Portugal is starting to concentrate minds in the market. As Gary Jenkins of Swordfish points out, the Portuguese had the proverbial bad day at the office yesterday with 10-year yields rising to 14.2%. Worse, the three-year rose to 19.2%. Here's Gary in his morning note:It appears that they may have crossed the Rubicon in the eyes of the market ... After all the longer your bonds trade like they are distressed the less of a surprise it is if you decide to enter into negotiations with your creditors. Portugal may not be being helped by the long drawn out discussions in Greece at the moment as clearly a disorderly default there would have major ramifications across Europe. A negotiated settlement in Greece might take that risk away but it might also become a template for Portugal in how to deal with their debt, which would not be good news for investors.Should be interesting then though there's not much action scheduled for the bond market today other than an auction of Italian bills later this morning.8.03am: The FTSE100 has duly opened down - 35 points in the red null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • Metal thieves steal silver cross from Manchester Cathedral
Plague of ruthless stealing reaches a nadir. But Operation Alloy is catching up with many thievesPolice in Manchester are searching for a stolen silver cross that was taken from Manchester Cathedral. It would seem that metal thieves have sunk to a new low, targeting the most important religious in the heart of the city.It is believed that the thief, or thieves, went into the cathedral purporting to be a visitor, but then took the silver cross which was attached to a shelf by a chain. Church staff later realised it had been stolen, sometime between 2.45pm and 5pm on Friday, January 13.The Greater Manchester Police force is appealing for anyone with information about the theft, to contact them. Sergeant Christopher Clarke says:The religious significance of this cross cannot be overestimated and the cruel theft has caused a great deal of distress. Understandably, they are desperate for its return. He urged scrapyards or metal dealers to be vigilant and if offered the item, to contact police andplease do not allow the thief to further profit from their callous actions and call us straight away. The force has launched Operation Alloy to target the problem of metal thefts across the county, and they are continuing to make arrests for those who steal metal for a quick buck.Clarke addsThis theft will cause outrage in the community because of the religious significance of the cross, and I would urge people to help us find the culprits.Operation Alloy involves specialist operations and neighbourhood policing officers in conjunction with telecoms engineers and utility companies to retrieve metal thought to have been stolen and to make arrests when they suspect people are involved in the metal theft. At the end of last year, in a separate operation launched by British Transport Police null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • French fears
Société Générale's shares have taken a sudden tumble but French worries were rattling around for weeksWorries about France have been rattling around markets for several weeks. On Wednesday they burst into the open, sending Société Générale's shares down by 20% at one point, with other banks following. Rumours of distress (strongly denied by SocGen) were flying while others spoke of the fear that France might lose its AAA rating. For now, the rating agencies seem supportive – Standard & Poor's has said the rating is stable. But it requires no genius to see that the cost to France of joining any new eurozone bailout could be steep. Its banks have also been enthusiastic lenders to the periphery countries, though BNP Paribas, not SocGen, is the one usually mentioned at the top of the list. Both banks appear to have solid capital ratios, so their defences ought to be solid.Yet it has also become clear over the past fortnight that funding conditions within the eurozone banking system have tightened. • Letter: Church should track down source of leak
There is a matter which ought to be cleared up before the Crown Nominations Commission meets to nominate the next archbishop of Canterbury (Panel choosing archbishop includes advocate of therapy for gay clergy, 10 April). In July 2010 someone on the CNC leaked to the press the fact that I was a shortlisted candidate for the See of Southwark. The archbishop of Canterbury set up an inquiry into the leak under Baroness Fritchie. This inquiry was never published, and was said to have been unable to reach a conclusion.Colin Slee, the late dean of Southwark, who was a permanent member of the CNC, sent in a memorandum to the Fritchie inquiry about the conduct of the Southwark appointment, which was published last year after his death. In it he expressed his great distress at having been ostracised because he was regarded by many, including both archbishops, as the probable source of the leak. Colin made the point that to suspect him was ludicrous, since he strongly supported me for the Southwark post, and the obvious purpose of the leak was to stir up threats of reaction among hardline evangelicals and frighten the CNC out of appointing me.Following Colin's death and the publication of this memorandum, the journalist who received the leak was honourable enough to publish a statement that Colin was not his source. The archbishop of Canterbury set up the Fritchie inquiry with alacrity when it was suspected that Colin Slee was the leaking member of the CNC. It would be good to know that steps are being taken to identify the real culprit and ensure that he will not be involved in nominating the new archbishop or in any further appointments.Jeffrey JohnDean of St AlbansAnglicanismGay rightsReligionChristianityRowan WilliamsEqualityguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. The Chinese are coming, and for some, like the workers at Saab's Trollhättan plant in Sweden, they cannot come fast enoughForget the Russians. The Chinese are coming, and for some in Europe, like the 3,800 workers at Saab's Trollhättan plant in Sweden, they cannot come fast enough. Unable to pay its suppliers, or now, it seems, its workers, Saab was thrown a short-term lifeline yesterday by an order for 582 cars for which an unidentified Chinese company will pay upfront. Nor is this an isolated example. A report to be issued shortly by the European Council on Foreign Relations estimates that China's purchase of public debt in Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain may be of the order of €15bn-€20bn, peanuts in comparison to the $647bn in which China's holdings in US treasuries have increased in the last three years, but, when coupled to its direct investments, which will grow to $1tn by 2020, significant enough to the distressed periphery of Europe.China is not shy of using its growing economic clout. A Hong Kong Airlines contract to buy billions of euros' worth of Airbus aircraft has been put on ice, because the Chinese government is unhappy about EU emissions trading legislation which will force Chinese carriers to pay more for flights landing in Europe. There will be more of the same as two business cultures clash. China's export of its surplus capital is both unavoidable – because it is diversifying from its US holdings to invest in Japan and Europe – and welcome. But whereas public contracts in Europe are open to China, Chinese public contracts are anything but to European companies. European companies can only get Chinese public sector contracts under stringent conditions. For this reason, the most significant meeting that prime minister Wen Jiabao will have on his _NULL_

The U.S. Treasury Department’s recent audit revealed that the nation’s largest mortgage loan servicers, namely Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase, have done a poor job of modifying distressed home loans through the government’s foreclosure prevention program. The Wall St. Journal has an intriguing article on the heat cities are facing, in courts and municipal markets, for shuffling bond funds away from their intended purpose. Miami is the most egregious example, and an obvious one. The city is the target of an ongoing SEC investigation. If more cities follow, that's probably troubling news for investors. As the article notes, opaque financing may mask fiscal distress, which keeps interest rates lower than they should be, and then shorts bondholders. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • Abdelbaset al-Megrahi's death won't bring us closer to the Lockerbie truth | Oliver Miles
The enigma of who was responsible for the deaths of 270 people lingers on, but my guess is we'll never solve itThe reported death of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi from cancer in Tripoli has made a lot of media people pull out their files. Megrahi was a former Libyan intelligence officer, and the only man convicted of responsibility for the Lockerbie disaster in which a bomb placed on a Pan-Am aircraft killed 270 people in 1988. He was released by the Scottish government on compassionate grounds in 2009.I doubt, however, that many government people have pulled out their files – unless they are mainly concerned with the media. Megrahi's death was expected and probably changes nothing. We know that he was convicted by a Scottish court in 2001, and that his first appeal was rejected in 2002. His second appeal was abandoned, although the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Board had drawn attention to grounds for believing that there might have been a miscarriage of justice, in an 800-page report that has since exceptionally been published. So why the media interest? First, this was a horrible crime. The families of the victims want justice. The demand for justice from those families that have gone public has taken two different forms. The American families believe Libya and Megrahi to be guilty and were disgusted when he was released on compassionate grounds. The British families want the truth; some are not convinced of Libyan guilt, some firmly believe Megrahi to be innocent. The American families have been backed by American politicians up to the president, and oddly also by British politicians up to the prime minister, who has spoken of the distress caused by Megrahi's release, although no British families seem to have said that they were distressed.Second, Megrahi's release raised s null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • Letters: Safety measures at the Grand National
All who love racing and horses will have been very saddened by the accidents which led to the death of Ornais and Dooney's Gate during the Grand National this year (Report, 11 April). It was distressing for all of us to watch – those involved in racing care deeply for their horses. This is why horseracing has for many years worked closely with charities such as the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare. However, racing is a sport with risk, and the Grand National is the most testing race in Great Britain. Racing is open about this risk and works hard to reduce it.TV viewers saw several welfare measures in action at this year's race. For the first time, two fences were bypassed to minimise the risk of further accidents and run-outs were introduced so that those horses that had lost their riders could run around fences rather than jump them. All jockeys had been told to dismount as soon as the race was over to allow handlers and vets to get water to the horses and prevent over-heating. The winning jockey, Jason Maguire, has been banned for exceeding the strict limits which the British Horseracing Authority, the sport's regulator, places on the number of times he could use his whip. We will certainly be reviewing our rules on appropriate use of the whip. Not everyone supports racing, and animal rights activists – whose stated agenda is to ban all use of animals in sport – are entitled to their views. The BHA believes the overwhelming majority of the British public want to see racing continue. We know the public also expects racing to do all in its power to reduce risk to horses. The BHA is listening and is determined to ensure this happens.Professor Tim MorrisDirector of equine science and welfare, British Horseracing AuthorityAnimal welfareGrand National 2011AintreeHorse racinggu 誰がレース好き馬が非常にハンナラ中Ornaisとドゥーニーの門の死、今年(レポート年4月1。。u200b。。u200b1日)に導かれる事故で悲しむされているがすべて

    • ECB makes €529bn in emergency loans to European banks
Second batch of three-year LTRO loans takes total lent to more than €1 trillion, as ECB seeks to stave off eurozone credit crunchEurope's banks took up €529bn (£445bn) in emergency loans from the European Central Bank in Wednesday's second long-term refinancing operation (LTRO), taking the total lent to more than €1 trillion. The LTRO, which offers three-year loans, was the key crisis measure introduced by the ECB's governor Mario Draghi last year to stave off the risk of a full-blown credit crunch in the euro area, after he took over from the more orthodox Jean-Claude Trichet.A day after banks were given the opportunity to bid for the funds, the ECB announced that 800 financial institutions in total had borrowed a total of €529.53bn, in line with market forecasts.Analysts said the large number of borrowers suggested smaller banks had been able to tap the cheap loans. In the first operation, in December, the ECB lent just under €500bn, and the measure was widely seen as critical to restoring calm to financial markets – and patching up the finances of struggling European banks. However, some economists have warned that the LTRO is storing up huge problems for the future, if the eurozone banks have failed to recover strongly enough by the end of the three-year period to allow them to wean themselves off public support.Investors had warned that a higher than expected take-up of the LTRO could signal distress among eurozone banks. • Britain should consider joining the euro | John Monks
Many feel the current eurozone problems justify the UK's refusal to join. In truth, there is limited advantage in our autonomyWith the crunch EU summit today, it will seem very eccentric to many to raise the question now about whether Britain is well served in ruling out future membership of the single currency.Of course, there is an overwhelming opinion among the UK's political and economic leaders that the UK has been well served in not joining the euro. Even some experts, such as Adair Turner, who were very much in favour of UK entry at the start, have confessed that they were wrong. And as Europe's leaders struggle to resolve the problems in Greece and other distressed countries, the one British consolation has been to thank the Almighty that we are not members, that we have our own central bank and that we retain the power to devalue our currency. But this easy dismissal of the euro for Britain is ignoring some inconvenient but relevant truths. One truth is that with all the current troubles the euro has gained 25% against sterling despite all the Grecian and other dramas. The euro is a strong currency, as British holidaymakers know all too well. For a short time, the UK's devaluation did seem to work – exports and growth improved (although the rates of growth were lower than in Germany and the other northern European members). Inflation, too, remained low initially. But in the past 12 months, the recovery has stalled and inflation has soared to 5.2%.The devaluation did not give British exports a sustainable adrenalin rush. And now we are suffering from the cheaper pound as we pay more for imports of our food and energy. The inflationary impact is now painful. As the UK congratulates itself on staying aloof from the euro, it should look thoughtfully at Ireland. Ireland _NULL_

    • The Last Exorcism poster banned
ASA says it received complaints that the promotional images showed a girl who appeared to have suffered a sexual assaultThe Advertising Standards Authority has banned a graphic poster for the Eli Roth-produced horror film The Last Exorcism following complaints that it was distressing and unsuitable for public display. One promotional display for the film featured a young woman doubled over backwards with her dress covered in blood, while another showed her dishevelled and filthy in the top corner of a room. The movie, which is directed by Daniel Stamm and stars Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, depicts a faithless evangelical minister who agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew, only to discover that this time, the subject may be genuinely possessed. It was released here in September. The ASA said most complainants found the images promoting the 15-rated film offensive, distressing and unsuitable for public display because the girl appeared to have suffered a sexual assault. The images appeared on buses and in the Cineworld's cinema chain's Unlimited film magazine. There was concern that the posters were likely to upset children because some posters were placed near schools and because the magazine was freely available. The film's distributor, Optimum Releasing, said it did not intend the posters to cause distress and had instructed its media agency to remove any ads displayed near schools once it learned of the complaints. The ASA ruled that the first ad was likely to cause offence and distress and agreed that the image of the young girl covered in blood was unsuitable to be seen by children. However, it said that because young children visiting the cinema were likely to be accompanied by an adult to see a 15-rated film, they were unlikely to see and ASAは、それがPR用の画像は、性的assaultThe広告標準局は、それが悲惨とパブリックディスプレイには不適であった苦情を次のイーライロスで生産ホラー映画の最後に悪魔払いのためのグラフィックポスターを禁止されている苦しんでいるように見えた女の子を示したの苦情を受けているフィルムの一つのプロモーションの表示は、別の彼女の乱れと不潔な部屋の上隅で示した中に若い女性が、後方に血だらけ彼女のドレスで倍増して紹介

    • Sri Lanka: Evidence that won't be buried | Editorial
On this occasion there are reasons why it was right to dispense with the responsibility broadcasters have to avoid causing distressThe footage screened by Channel 4 last night ranks among the most horrific yet shown on British television. Naked prisoners shot in the head; the dead bodies of women who had been raped, dumped on a truck; the immediate aftermath of a shell landing on a hospital – images caught on mobile phones of the atrocities committed by government soldiers in the final months of Sri Lanka's brutal civil war. The story of what happened two years ago when government forces corralled hundreds of thousands of Tamils in horrific conditions into an ever-shrinking space, as they closed in the defeated Tigers, is well known. A UN panel last month found credible allegations of war crimes committed both by the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE. But the pictures of the shootings are new and Channel 4 has done what human rights organisations should have been doing in compiling and sifting through it.The footage, shot either by escapers, or as trophy videos by soldiers committing the atrocities, is almost unwatchable. But on this occasion there are two reasons why it was right to dispense with the responsibility broadcasters have to avoid causing distress. First, the Sri Lankan government engineered a war without witness, which was why, in echoes of Srebrenica, they forced UN observers to leave first. This film atones, in small part, for the failure of the international community to make Sri Lanka accountable for these deaths. Second, the parallel with Srebrenica is only too real. As the UN panel reveals, the shelling of hospitals in the so-called no-fire zones was so systematic – there were 65 such attacks – that it is impossible to believe it was random. (C/NF) Since last summer, the nature of the crisis in financial markets has changed. The problem is now not liquidity in the system but rather a question of systemic solvency, Bank of England (BOE) Governor Mervyn King said at a lunch meeting with Treasury Deputy Secretary Robert Kimmitt and Ambassador Tuttle. King said there are two imperatives. First to find ways for banks to avoid the stigma of selling unwanted paper at distressed prices or going to a central bank for assistance. Second to ensure there's a coordinated effort to possibly recapitalize the global banking system. For the first imperative, King suggested developing a pooling and auction process to unblock the large volume of financial investments for which there is currently no market. For the second imperative, King suggested that the U.S., UK, Switzerland, and perhaps Japan might form a temporary new group to jointly develop an effort to bring together sources of capital to recapitalize all major banks. END SUMMARYSystemic Insolvency Is Now The Problem--------------------------------------2. (C/NF) King said that liquidity is necessary but not sufficient in the current market crisis because the global banking system is undercapitalized due to being over leveraged. He said it is hard to look at the big four UK banks (Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, HSBC, and Lloyds TSB) and not think they need more capital. • A strong Islamist showing in Egypt's election need not be cause for panic | Issandr El Amrani
It is depressing Islamists have garnered such support, but all is not lost if the Muslim Brotherhood is serious about democracyThe results from the first round of Egypt's parliamentary elections paint a fairly clear picture: Islamists will be a majority in the next parliament, led by the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party (FJP), and Salafists have exceeded expectations to be, perhaps, the second party in Egypt. This news has profoundly depressed most educated, middle-class Cairenes I know who had hoped that the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak would be followed by a relatively liberal democracy that would be inclusive of moderate Islamists. It is particularly distressing to non-Muslims, who will now fear the Islamisation of public life that has taken place in the last two decades will be accelerated, with full backing from parliament and government leaders in the next few years. That the Muslim Brothers would perform well was expected: after all their electoral machine is excellent, they have experience and a clear message, and are a known quantity. Six months ago, when they promised to only run for a limited number of seats, it was assumed that they would be about 30% of parliament. They may very well pass the 50% mark, having decided to contest a lot more seats than initially expected. They have done so without a broad alliance with other parties, since the Democratic Alliance they belong to is at least 80% FJP.The success of the Salafists is more of a surprise, and must reflect their grassroots presence in Egyptian society. But it is deeply worrisome, because the Salafists have made clear in their statements that they are an illiberal party with extreme views on many topics, whatever their charitable works are. • Desmond Tutu: The Africa Centre must not simply be swept away
The trustees should consult over the sale of a London building where Africans can connect with the past and plan the futureMany years ago, as a student in London – and later when I visited London as an anti-apartheid campaigner – there was a special place that was for me a home from home. That place was the Africa Centre in Covent Garden. For my generation, this building, in what was still the capital of empire, was a place where we could come together with Africans from all over the world to celebrate our independence; and, for those of us still struggling to be free, express and receive solidarity. Therefore, like many others, I was distressed to hear that the trustees of the centre had decided to sell the lease of the centre without consulting members of the charity or the wider African diaspora. So much of importance happened there that it cannot just be swept away, as the trustees wish to do, by selling the building to a property developer – which is why two months ago I stated my support for the Save The Africa Centre campaign and its call for a public consultation on the decision to sell this historic and cultural asset.Listening, acknowledging and responding appropriately to criticism are as important as making difficult decisions. It may be that there is a brilliant new scheme and a shining new future for the Africa Centre; but if those who currently put on events there, those African organisations based there – and those, like me, who have used, loved and cherished the building – are ignorant of future plans, how can we judge the merit of the proposal? How can we feel included and committed if the whole venture is shrouded in secrecy?Of course, our history and institutions, and our future, are more than buildings. The guy clearly suffered from post-traumatic stress but Tim's frank but calm manner soon put him at ease, and we got a great colour feature. That mix of charm and compassion was a great attribute in a job where you were often dealing with vulnerable, distressed, if not traumatised, individuals: young runaways, victims of abuse, the mentally ill and addicts. • Mourning television: Mark Lawson
Harrison Ford as Adrian Chiles? Fictional and real breakfast shows share a lot more than a nameActors discussing their new movies are a frequent item on breakfast TV, but the main UK rivals for the sleepy-eyed audience will both have suffered discomfort at the prospect of covering the latest Harrison Ford movie, released here on Friday. Morning Glory features Ford as Mike Pomeroy, a granite-haired, gravel-larynxed American news anchor who, as a result of a contractual dispute with his network, is forced to become co-host of a viewer-abandoned and critically trashed breakfast TV show at risk of being pulled from the schedules.Unfortunately the crappy format goes under the name Daybreak, for which reason Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley were happy on this occasion to cede the big film-star interview to their BBC1 rivals, and clear ratings-winners, Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams.Revealingly, both the Hollywood script about the fictional Daybreak, and newspaper coverage of the continuing problems at the factual ITV1 show of that name – which feels about as secure as a football manager after four months of defeats – work from the premise that there is something inherently comic about broadcasting at dawn.Although Morning Glory wryly takes its title from a euphemism for an erection, the implication of the film is that breakfast TV has a detumescent effect in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or wherever else it is watched. The sardonic attitude to post-dawn broadcasting is enhanced by the fact that the network producing the celluloid Daybreak, IBS, shares initials with the distressing condition irritable bowel syndrome. The idea that the early shift is humorously unnatural is based on the disjunction between the demeanour of the presenters and that of a large part of the au

    • Fewer young Americans getting married, report finds
Study reveals proportion of US adults aged 25 to 34 who are married has fallen by more than 10% since 2000The drift in America away from marriage as the central pillar of society has reached a crucial landmark with the proportion of young adults who have never married exceeding that of married couples for the first time since records began more than a century ago.An analysis of statistics gathered from 2009 and this year by the Population Reference Bureau underlines the sea change that has swept across the US since the 1970s when the steady decline in marriage as a social institution began. The PRB finds that in the past decade the proportion of American adults aged 25 to 34 who are married has fallen from 55.1% in 2000 to 44.9% last year. Meanwhile, the percentage of young people in the same age bracket who have never married marched inexorably in the opposite direction, rising from 34.5% in 2000 to 46.3% in 2009.A similarly consistent trend is found among the overall US population aged 18 and above, with married couples dropping from 57% to 52% over those nine years. The authors of the report, Mark Mather and Diana Lavery, put the recent drop in marital rates down to the economic collapse of 2008.They suggest that young couples are delaying tying the knot or even putting it off entirely as a result of economic distress. The costs of the ceremony, combined with the longer-term expense associated with setting up home and having children, appears to be turning them off the idea.Instead, cohabitation is becoming more prevalent as an American way of life. Again, this is part of a trend that has been going on for at least three decades but the report suggests it has accelerated in recent years because of feelings of economic uncertainty, particularly among men.

    • Yoga expert: 'It seems idiotic they can patent it'
Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati argues that Indian government's attempt to create a rigid system of yoga misses the pointThe 64,000 postures form only a tiny part of yoga. Poses are not an end in themselves, but a preparation for deeper, more meaningful practices. The word yoga means oneness and unity – unity with the self. Discover who you are, and then that can give you a sense of oneness with others and ultimately the whole of creation, and the divine.Poses are not the definition of yoga, which consists of breathing practices, deep relaxation, and meditative practices – not just postures. There's a whole yoga to do with mantras, another to do with music.I would definitely give anyone trying to patent any postures a very wide berth. They haven't invented anything. The practices and traditions of yoga go back thousands of years. At best, we are interpreters of ancient wisdom. The patenting and filming of specific positions is distressing. Yoga is a huge body of knowledge and practice, and you can't patent such a large entity, let alone a very small percentage of it.Nor is it the preserve of India alone. Yes, it It has been nurtured for many centuries by the monastic and guru traditions in India, but statues and paintings depicting yoga practices have been discovered all over the world. In Colombia, there are statues of people sitting in yoga positions, and adopting breathing and meditative practices, so yoga is broader than just Indian and it seems absolutely idiotic that they can patent it.In fact, I'm distressed at the way things have developed in recent years. When yoga first became popular in the 60s in the western world, it was about an expansion of consciousness. We were looking for deeper truth. Those first Swamis who travelled to London in the 60s brought us a mixtu スワミPragyamurtiサラスワティは、インド政府の試みは、ヨガの厳格なシステムを作成するためにヨガのほんの一部を形成するpointThe 64,000姿勢をミスと主張する

    • Cuba: a revolution in the rough | Isabel Hilton
Fifty years after Fidel and Che mocked golf, Cuba's regime is in thrall to this most ungreen of activitiesDrive along the coast road in Cuba that passes the Bay of Pigs in spring or early summer, and you risk a distressing sight: a stretch of road, some 20 miles long, carpeted in a thick coating of crushed crabs.Cuba's red land crabs have evolved to live in the moist tropical forests, but every year the females return to the sea to breed. For tens of thousands of years, this mass migration was not a problem; then Cuba's planners built a trunk road straight through the migration route. It could only have one result – an uneven contest between crab and truck. They keep on coming, big red female crabs, rearing up with their claws to slash at vehicles, before being smashed to bits.Driving across the crunching layer of crab, I began to suspect that environmental impact assessments did not count for much in Cuba's planning process. The news that the government is planning to cover much of the island in golf courses suggests, in that respect at least, that not much has changed. There is a history to Cuba's affair with this most bourgeois of games. Before the 1959 revolution Cuba hosted golf as well as gambling in its role as North America's tropical playground. After the revolution, both pursuits fell out of favour, symbols of an alien decadence that had no place in the new workers' paradise. When Che Guevara and Fidel Castro were photographed playing a round of golf in 1961, just a month before the Bay of Pigs invasion, the intent was not to rehabilitate the game, or even to take possession of it. The two revolutionaries played in their customary fatigues and their technique did not convince. The image they presented was satiric and defiant, like a pair of schoolboys driving a Cuba。。u0026#39;の。膜コーティングでカーペットだ赤い土地カニ湿潤熱帯林に住んで進化してきたが、毎年海に女性のリターンを繁殖に長い

    • Dangerous history-rewriting in Latvia | Efraim Zuroff
This week I took part in a protest against those who paint the Waffen-SS as heroes. Britain should take a similar standEver since the marches of Latvian SS veterans have been held on 16 March in Riga, I have been involved in the efforts to convince the local authorities to ban these ceremonies. There were a few years when we succeeded, but for the most part the marches have continued to the consternation of the Russian residents of Latvia and those who oppose the honouring of individuals who fought alongside the Nazis to achieve a victory of the Third Reich. This Tuesday, for the first time, I actually saw the march with my own eyes and had an opportunity to join a peaceful protest staged by local anti-fascist demonstrators. It was a shocking and utterly disheartening sight to see over 1,000 people gathered in subfreezing weather to honour Waffen-SS units, among whose soldiers were several of the biggest mass murderers of Jews during the Holocaust. As emotionally distressing as the ceremony was for me personally, however, its most problematic and disturbing aspect was the manner in which the symbols of renewed Latvian independence were exploited to honour the service of the members of the Latvian Legion – thereby reinforcing the myth that they were freedom fighters for their country's independence, as opposed to fighters in the service of Nazi Germany, a regime which bears direct responsibility for the mass murder of tens of millions of innocent civilians. Thus two rows of young Latvian nationalists waving the flags of democratic Latvia, a member in good standing of the European Union and Nato, stood as an honour guard at the Freedom Monument as the procession of veterans came to lay flowers and wreaths at its base.Staging the ceremony at the Freedom Monument, probably th 今週、私はそれらの人のヒーローとしての武装親衛隊ペイントの抗議に参加した
