    • Obama in the firing line
Arguments over whether President Obama has reneged on his Aids promises could be counter-productive. Maybe it's time to focus on other leaders who have done far less? The International Aids conference - this year in Vienna - is never a tame affair. With 20,000 impassioned, often angry, always highly motivated delegates, that would be unlikely. The emotion and the rhetoric of what is essentially a political rather than a scientific conference (for all that it is organised by doctors) has had real and dramatic knock-on effects in the past. In Durban, South Africa, in 2000, the conference shamed drug companies and rich nations into providing drug treatment to keep the millions alive who were dying of Aids in poor countries. There has been copious blood on the floor - red paint, to be honest, all over the stands of the drug companies who used to be regularly targeted by activists for their high prices for Aids drugs. But this year, the focus for much of the anger is more unexpected - President Obama, of whom so much has been expected by so many. The key complaint is that Obama, before he was elected, promised $50 billion more for Aids by 2013. Now he has backtracked, activists say. But no - his defenders riposte, he is absolutely committed to fighting HIV/Aids, which will get a 2.5% increase in 2011 in spite of the dire economic climate. Bill Clinton defended him from the platform. Eric Goosby, who heads Pepfar, the President's emergency plan for Aids relief, said Obama had been misunderstood and was hurt by it - see my story here. Zeke Emanuel, special advisor on health to the White House Office of Management and Budget, was bullish in his rejection of the activists' claims of cuts - see here.Well they would say that, wouldn't they. • Parties of Western Sahara conflict to hold next round of informal talks
Delegations from Morocco, the Frente Polisario, Algeria and Mauritania will meet for the next round of informal talks on the Western Sahara conflict next week, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here Friday. The informal meetings come at the invitation of UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon's personal envoy Christopher Ross and will take place from Dec. 16 to Dec. 18 in Long Island, New York. • Hajj rituals test Saudi Arabian authorities
Overcrowding and congestion as pilgrims camp out in desolate locationWhile more than a billion Muslims around the world celebrated Eid today, those gathered in the Al-Masha'er district of Saudi Arabia proceeded with their hajj rituals – throwing pebbles at vast pillars, shaving their heads and sacrificing animals.Shaving the head, or halq, is a fundamental act for all male pilgrims during the pilgrimage: Muhammad is said to have prayed three times for men who removed all their hair and only once for those who trimmed it.The slaughter of an animal – qurbani – marks Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah's command. The ministry of hajj proudly announced earlier this month that more than 100,000 Somali sheep were on hand to cover the high demand for sacrificial animals, adding to the 400,000 waiting in Jeddah and the extra million already being imported. The casting of stones sees pilgrims re-enact Abraham's rejection of the devil. According to Islamic tradition the prophet was on his way to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah's request when he was tempted by the devil on three occasions. Each time the prophet threw stones to drive him away. Hajj authorities have deployed 360 coolers and tent fabric to protect pilgrims from the suns rays. There are also misting fans and spraying tubes.Today's exertions come hard on the heels of an unforgiving overnight regime. Pilgrims last night camped out in Muzadalifa, a desolate place but for washrooms, open-air barbecues and mobile phone stands. They slept on plastic or cotton sheeting, some had blankets to cover them – although many did not – and they were surrounded by piles of discarded food, packaging and footwear. They left just before dawn prayer. In addition to being stepped on – or over – by other pilgrims ma

    • China needs deepening reform: Premier
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for the countrymen to stick to the reform and opening-up policy and rejection of regression and stagnation while making a study tour of Shenzhen, the country's first special economic zone (SEZ), on the weekend. Regression and stagnation will not only end the achievements of the 30-year reform and opening-up drive and the rare opportunity of development, but will also suffocate the vitality of China's socialist cause with its own characteristics. To do so ... 中国の温家宝首相は、停滞とのと呼ばれる回帰

    • Clothes make the mandate – in Sri Lanka and elsewhere
Rajapaksa's trademark red-brown scarf is the colour of kurrakan, the rough finger millet grain eaten as the staple diet of poor farmers, and typical of the southern Hambantota district that he comes from. Worn with the sarong and spotless white robe, Rajapaksa's look also implies a devout Buddhist faith. He came to power in 2005 on a vote from rural communities and with key backing from hardline Buddhist groups. The Sri Lankan president is not the only world leader who has used sartorial signifiers to establish his credentials as a man of the people: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's choice of cheap windcheater and polyester slacks projects the image of an anonymous everyman, not unlike the working class voters whose support the Iranian president has depended on. Meanwhile his clipped beard and refusal to wear a tie convey an unshowy piety and a rejection of western values.Evo Morales is another leader whose eschewal of the tie mirrors a rejection of western politics. On his first foreign tour after he was elected in 2006, the Bolivian president wore the same striped jumper at official functions in Madrid, Beijing and South Africa. That choice provoked sniping from fashion commentators, but many Bolivians saw it as an avowal of Morales' pride in his Andean heritage.Sri LankaMahmoud AhmadinejadIranJason Burkeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ラジャパクサの商標は、赤茶色のスカーフkurrakanの色は、大まかなシコクビエの穀物は、貧しい農民の主食として、食べると、彼はから来ている南部ハンバントタ地区の典型的な
