    • What will spark the next Fukushima? | John Vidal
An untrustworthy nuclear industry, incompetently regulated, is leading the world into greater and greater dangerThe gung-ho nuclear industry is in deep shock. Just as it and its cheerleader, the International Atomic Energy Agency, were preparing to mark next month's 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident with a series of self-congratulatory statements about the dawning of a safe age of clean atomic power, a series of catastrophic but entirely avoidable accidents take place in not one but three reactors in one of the richest countries of the world. Fukushima is not a rotting old power plant in a failed state manned by half-trained kids, but supposedly one of the safest stations in one of the most safety-conscious countries with the best engineers and technologists in the world.Chernobyl blew up not because the reactor malfunctioned but because an ill-judged experiment to see how long safety equipment would function during shutdown went too far. So, too, in Japan, it was not the nuclear bits of the station that went wrong but the conventional technology. The pumps did not work because the power supply went down and the back-up support was not there because no one had thought what happened was possible.Even though Japan had been warned many times that possibly the most dangerous place in the world to site a nuclear power station was on its coast, no one had taken into account the double-whammy effect of a tsunami and an earthquake on conventional technology. It's easy to be wise after the event, but the inquest will surely show that the accident was not caused by an unpredictable natural disaster, but by a series of highly predictable bad calls by human regulators. The question now is whether the industry can be trusted anywhere. If this industry were a company, its sha 無力規制信頼原子力産業は、ますます大きなdangerThe熱心に支持原子力産業に世界をリードしている深いショックです

    • Japan nuke plant blast may be worse than Chernobyl: Indian experts
Some Indian experts have warned that the explosion at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex may be worst than Chernobyl even as the quake-hit nation seeks to reassure its people that the country would not experience a full- blown nuclear disaster. At least 15 people have been reportedly admitted to hospital with symptoms of radiation poisoning after a blast ripped through a reactor at the Fukushima nuclear power plant yesterday. The emergency cooling system is said to have been failed at ... いくつかのインドの専門家は、被災国は国が本格的な原子力災害が発生しないよう、その人々を安心させるためにしようと、日本の福島第一原子力複合体の爆発も、チェルノブイリよりも最悪かもしれないことを警告している

    • 'Radioactive boars' on loose in Germany
Radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is still poisoning Germany's boars nearly 25 years on, with authorities fighting to keep toxic meat off the market as the wild boar population rockets. The boars feed off mushrooms, truffles and wild berries which still contain high levels of caesium-137, carried in the radioactive cloud that spread across Europe following the 1986 accident at the Ukrainian nuclear plant.

    • Oil companies under attack
BP is not the only major oil group that has had to deal with an environmental catastrophe or public relations disaster• Full coverage of the BP oil spillExxonMobilMarket capitalisation: $282bnRevenue: $337bnNet income: $21bnThe oil giant environmentalists love to hate, Exxon has drawn flak in recent years for its stance on global warming and financial support for groups on the lunatic fringe of the climate debate. Officially its view has softened in recent years but the company, one of the biggest and most profitable in the world, remains very much an oil man's oil firm. The BP spill looks likely to relieve it of an unwanted oily albatross around its neck: the enormous 1989 leak from its Exxon Valdez tanker off Alaska was previously the biggest in US history.ChevronMarket capitalisation: $149bnRevenue: $184bnNet income: $13.2bnIf BP feels it is being unfairly picked on, it could point to the damage blamed on Chevron in the Ecuadorian jungle. Dubbed the Amazon Chernobyl by locals, the dumping of massive amounts of waste is being investigated in a lengthy and acrimonious court case. Thousands of Ecuadorians have brought the £18bn lawsuit, which claims their land was contaminated during three decades of oil exploration and extraction by Texaco, now owned by Chevron.Royal Dutch ShellMarket capitalisation: $112bnRevenue: $207bnNet income: $9.8bnShell has faced persistent criticism over its environmental record, particularly in Nigeria, where the company recently admitted spilling 14,000 tonnes of oil in 2009. The majority, said the company, was lost through two incidents – one in which the firm claims that thieves damaged a wellhead at its Odidi field and another where militants bombed the trans-Escravos pipeline.
