    • User-generated horror in Moscow | Megan French
Anyone with a mobile phone can now report on horrific events as they unfold, but respect for the victims can often be lackingGraphic pictures of the Russian metro bombings are widely available on the internet, clearly showing the dead, the injured and the horrific aftermath of a terrorist attack. This marks another stage in the advent of user-generated content. Never before has the world been so full of aspiring journalists, nearly all of us have the capability of capturing videos, taking photographs and uploading content to websites – all via a mobile phone. This offers more coverage than a news organisation could ever dream to possess, but poses a serious ethical dilemma. While the mainstream media around the world have, for the most part, chosen not to show the pictures of corpses and body parts and instead have opted to only show the injured and the survivors, other outlets have not. Since the early 20th century there has been a widespread media convention not to show graphic pictures of dead people. The press tested this boundary with the photograph of Ruth Snyder in the electric chair. On 12 January 1928, a photographer for the New York Daily News captured the murderess's death with a camera strapped to his leg. The picture was splashed across the newspaper's front page and caused widespread revulsion across America, and teaching the media the limits of acceptable coverage. Was this limit taken too far in the coverage of the London bombings of July 2007? Despite photos being taken from inside the tunnels, and even of the forensics team scouring the destroyed tube carriage, the images show no blood to signal the injuries that were sustained. Macabre though that may sound, the clean-cut images distort the effects of what happened, and shield us from seeing the harm don

    • Red & White – review
A bitter post-second world war conflict between Dutch colonialists and local nationalists followed the liberation of Indonesia from the Japanese occupation and led to the creation of the present republic, largest of all Islamic states. Apart from documentaries, it hasn't attracted much attention, and the only enduring literary work of interest it has inspired is Eric Ambler's 1956 thriller The Night-Comers. This situation has not really been radically altered by the Freedom trilogy, an epic account of the struggle, made by an Indonesian director working with American writers and technicians, the first part of which is Red & White, the colours of the patriotic insurgents.Unfortunately, Red & White is a conventional, unilluminating work, lacking historical context and individual characterisation, the best scenes being old black-and-white newsreels that accompany the final credits. The Dutch troops are sadistic racists, massacring anyone who stands in their way. Their opponents, a group of officer cadets trained to lead the liberation, are the usual cliche team established in second world war movies. The action sequences are moderately well mounted.Action and adventureDramaWorld cinemaIndonesiaPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto venture is just too much for regulators
BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto's plans for a joint iron-ore venture have been rejected not only by Australia but also by the European commission, Japan, South Korea and GermanyBHP Billiton and Rio Tinto spend hundreds of millions of pounds every year on exploration and their probes sometimes find nothing worth mining. So perhaps the waste of management time involved in trying unsuccessfully to persuade regulators to clear a joint venture in iron ore in Western Australia can be dismissed with a shrug of the shoulders. After all, the Pilbara adventure, if it had been accepted, would have yielded joint annual savings of $10bn (£6.3bn) – a prize so large that even a slim chance of success might justify a pursuit. That breezy view, however, doesn't fit with the facts. Last June, when the joint venture was announced, BHP and Rio fully expected to win and to secure their $10bn.The structure of the venture was crafted to address regulatory concerns that emerged a year earlier when BHP was plotting a full takeover of its rival. The pair would pool their production assets but run separate sales and marketing operations to ensure competition. It was claimed the customers – the steelmakers – should celebrate the creation of a production powerhouse that could accelerate output of iron ore and deliver lower prices. That argument has now been roundly rejected. The fight wasn't even close. According to today's's statements, the European commission, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Germany objected to the joint venture. That's a long list. What happened? Well, it is true that iron-ore prices have soared since June last year. But rising prices alone should not have been a deal-killer. On the BHP and Rio view of the world, higher prices create an even greater incentive to boost output. Edward Pimentel, a telephone technician from New Mexico, walks away with unusual prize at Moscow competitionThe karaoke world's newest star is about to find out if Russian dumplings are good for the throat after he won a million of them at the Karaoke World Championships in Moscow.Edward Pimentel, a telephone company technician from Albuquerque, New Mexico, got the unusual prize after the audience at the competition voted him their favourite for his dapper and assured R&B performances. He chose Usher's DJ's Got Us Fallin' In Love for his final-round song.Organisers said the dumplings are enough to last 27 years if someone eats 100 of them a day.A panel of judges chose two Finns – Sam Moudden and Maria Saarimaa-Ylitalo – as their male and female champions. They were awarded karaoke machines. Moudden, sharply dressed in Rat Pack style, performed Je Suis Malade, while the purple-gowned Saarimaa-Ylitalo sang Celine Dion's I Surrender. Two singers who stretched karaoke's boundaries beyond the usual pop favourites came second. Fedor Rytikov, a gastroenterologist by day, advanced to the finals with the Nessum Dorma aria from Turandot, then stayed with Italian music for the final with L'Immensita.Russia's Julia Kurileva was runner-up in the women's competition with the most adventurous choice of the night – the wordless and eerie wailing of Pink Floyd's Great Gig In The Sky.Amateur singers from 16 countries took part in the three-day competition.RussiaUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Engineering firm to offer seats on craft being developed for Nasa to allow passengers to orbit the EarthThe US aircraft company Boeing is to offer passengers the chance to fly into space on a vehicle it is developing for travel in low-Earth orbit. It said yesterday it had reached an agreement with the Virginia-based Space Adventures company to sell passenger seats on commercial flights aboard Boeing's CST-100 space vehicle, being developed for Nasa. The spacecraft could carry seven people and fly in low-Earth orbit as soon as 2015, Boeing said. The company said that potential customers could include private individuals, companies, non-governmental organisations and US federal agencies.Space Adventures, which specialises in selling commercial tickets for private space travel, said it had arranged for seven participants to fly on eight missions to the International Space Station. The companies said that pricing for the planned space flights had not been set but were expected to be competitive.Guy Laliberte, founder the Cirque du Soleil, paid more than $35m (£22m) to travel into space last year on a Russian spaceship from Kazakhstan.Virgin's Richard Branson has already announced plans to offer commercial trips into space for tourists costing around $200,000.The US space shuttle programme, which carries astronauts and supplies to the ISS, is being shut down next year. Barack Obama's administration has launched an initiative to replace Nasa-owned and operated launch services with commercial space taxis.Until a replacement vehicle is ready, the US will be solely dependent on Russia to fly crews to the ISS, a $100bn-project involving 16 nations, which has been under construction 220 miles above Earth since 1998.Russia currently charges Nasa about $51m per seat for a ride on its So

    • Barack Obama recalls childhood years in Indonesia
Extract from Dreams from my Father recounts Barack Obama's time in Indonesia from 1967 to 1971The following extracts are taken from Chapter Two of Obama's Dreams from My Father. In 1967, the young Barack moved to Indonesia with his mother and remained there until 1971 when he was sent to live with his grandparents in Hawaii. It had taken me less than six months to learn Indonesia's language, its customs, and its legends. I had survived chicken pox, measles, and the sting of my teachers' bamboo switches. The children of farmers, servants, and low-level bureaucrats had become my best friends, and together we ran the streets morning and night, hustling odd jobs, catching crickets, battling swift kites with razor-sharp lines – the loser watched his kite soar off with the wind, and knew that somewhere other children had formed a long wobbly train, their heads towards the sky, waiting for their prize to land. With Lolo [Obama's stepfather], I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). That's how things were, one long adventure, the bounty of a young boy's life. In letters to my grandparents, I would faithfully record many of these events, confident that more civilising packages of chocolate and peanut butter would surely follow. But not everything made its way into my letters; some things I found too difficult to explain. I didn't tell Toot and Gramps about the face of the man who had come to our door one day with a gaping hole where his nose should have been: the whistling sound he made as he asked my mother for food. Nor did I mention the time that one of my friends told me in the middle of recess that his baby broth

    • Fifty years on, 200 million more women need the pill
Next week is the 50th anniversary of the US approval of the pill. The revolution it is credited with launching in affluent countries now needs to move to the developing world, where 200 million women need or want contraception.Fifty years ago next week, the US authorities approved the birth control pill. It has often been argued it changed the world, liberating women, ushering in the Swinging Sixties. The truth is probably less dramatic - social change was happening and there were other methods of birth control - but its arrival certainly helped millions of women. We may take it for granted now, but the difference the pill could still make in developing countries is substantial, giving women who are a long way from social or sexual liberation a means of limiting their families that they can control themselves. It's a subject that will get attention at the forthcoming Women Deliver conference in Washington, which will feature some of the world's most powerful and prominent women, including Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton. This is what Jill Sheffield, president of Women Deliver, has to say:When a woman is able to manage her fertility, she is better able to manage her life and to realize her full potential as a human being. This has tremendous positive implications for her family, her community, and her country, and is a solid cost-effective solution to maternal deaths worldwide. The advent of the birth control pill in the US sparked a revolution. We must support the continuation of the revolution for women worldwide, by ensuring affordable access to contraceptives for all individuals.More than 200 women worldwide have used the pill since its approval by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). More than 200 women worldwide still need or want access to it, she says.

    • Missing US balloonists' bodies found
Remains of Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rhymer Davis discovered in Puglia by Italian fishing boatAn Italian fishing boat has discovered the bodies of two American adventurers missing since their balloon disappeared over the Adriatic in September during a race that began in the UK.The boat hauled in a balloon gondola off the coast of Vieste in southern Puglia this morning, said a local port official, Guido Limongelli. Inside was two bodies and documents confirming them as Richard Abruzzo, 47, and Carol Rymer Davis, 65.The pair had taken off from Bristol to take part in the 54th annual Gordon Bennett gas balloon race, in which competitors attempt to fly as far as possible from the UK city. They lost contact with their support team on 29 September during thunderstorms over the Adriatic.Rescuers spent a week looking for the pair before concluding that their balloon had most likely hit the water at 50mph and were unlikely to have survived. When the fisherman realised what was in the trawler's net they alerted port officials in Vieste, who sent a patrol boat to escort the vessel back to port, Limongelli said.A coroner was performing an autopsy and officials were investigating to determine what might have caused the balloon to crash.Abruzzo and Davis were described as very experienced fliers, who won the 2004 Gordon Bennett event, the world's oldest balloon race. Richard Abruzzo was the son of Ben Abruzzo, who was in 1981 part of the first team to cross the Pacific Ocean by balloon.Competitors in the race set off from Bristol on 26 September, with most teams getting no further than the south coast of France. • Serving in Iraq killed my faith in God | Adnan Sarwar
The destruction I saw made me question everything I had previously thought about religionLuke was a friend of mine. The last time we spoke for any length was in February 2003. Around three in the morning I woke hearing him struggling to stand and giggling. I saw him confused and braced against the wall. I called out, he turned and asked me why I was sleeping in the toilets. I told him it was my bedroom. He needlessly told me he was drunk. We were both soldiers in the Royal Engineers. He was what you might imagine your average squaddie to be: hard-drinking and full of life. I was not so much your average squaddie: a Pakistani immigrant who had joined the British Army looking for adventure. He sat on the end of my bed and told me he was worried. We had just been told we were going to Iraq. The lads had responded to this news by going out into the local town to drink the bars dry. Now, here was Luke, his behaviour the result of a heavy night numbing reality. I prepared myself to hear my friend talk about how he was worried about his family. But, he didn't want to talk to me about that. He told me he was worried about me.He asked me why I didn't drink or sleep with anybody. I told him it was my religion. He laughed and asked if I actually believed in all that. He told me how life was too short, how we were off to Iraq soon and how embarrassing it would be to die a virgin. Only a soldier could have put it so well.I found myself struggling to fault his logic. I had followed Islam for years, having grown up in an area of Burnley that was almost exclusively Asian. My street, a little Pakistan, had rows of terraced houses full of Muslims getting their halal meat from the cash and carry at one end and praying five times a day at the mosque at the other end. A US flight was delayed after maggots fell on to passengers from overhead lockers. What's your worst aviation experience?Once upon a time, air travel had somewhat glamorous associations. Jet-setting globetrotters could expect attentive cabin crew to provide them with blankets, food and alcoholic beverages as they tipped their seats back and waited for the in-flight movie. These days, however, with the advent of no-frills travel, passengers are likely to end up paying extra for any little comforts they require. Ryanair, the epitome of budget airlines, even plans to take things to extremes by introducing standing-only tickets and pay-toilets on its aircraft. However, all that pales into insignificance compared with the experience of travellers on a US Airways flight from Atlanta, which was forced back to the gate when maggots fell on to passengers from overhead lockers. We want to hear your bad in-flight experiences. • What's all the fuss about Dollywood?
Three teenagers flew there on their own. What's the appeal to young people, exactly?Three Florida minors surprised authorities last week by taking a flight to Nashville without telling their parents. But perhaps what was most startling about their incredible adventure, was that they were trying to get to Dollywood, the Dolly Parton theme park. Liberty Love, who was taken there by her parents when she was 11, explains why it might appeal to young people.Dollywood is a great experience, but it's not somewhere I would choose to fly to with my friends. In fact, unless you're a diehard Dolly Parton fan, it's a slightly odd place to go as a teenager; it's nothing like Legoland. In many ways Dollywood is more like a museum. You see Dolly growing up: there are models of the house she lived in as a child, her school, and where she went to church. It also teaches you about the local way of life. You can see the blacksmith at work, and visit a replica of a classic American diner. It's a lot more beautiful than the average theme park, set in the Great Smoky Mountains and with shops painted in lovely pink and blue pastel shades. There are rollercoasters, but only about 10 of them, and they're all old-fashioned wooden ones.Dollywood is child-friendly, and entertaining, but it's really aimed at fans. You can try on Dolly wigs, see her glittery dresses, and watch interviews with her. And of course sing along to her music – there are loads of live shows and it is always blaring from the speakers. When we went, we saw a lot of older people. There were some teenagers, but they were with their families. If I was flying off somewhere out of the blue, I wouldn't pick Dollywood. I'd go somewhere hot and American – but not totally dedicated to Dolly Parton.Liberty Love was talking to Patrick K

    • Oil spill brings summer of discontent | Elizabeth Wurtzel
The oil spill is arousing rare rage in the US. How is it that we are so completely unable to do something – anything – to contain it?In what I hope is the far-flung future, when some latter-day Gibbon writes a multi-volume e-book chronicling the decline and fall of the American empire, 2010 will surely be a watershed – or, rather, an oil spill – year. This summer of our discontent, as the gush in the Gulf goes on and on, marks the time when things seem to have finally fallen apart and the centre can no longer hold. That this has to be happening under the tutelage of President Obama, who many of us do dearly love, is sad and unfair. And while I actually believe that the US has decades more of world dominance – dissolution takes a long time – mistakes like Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan are not the death of us: our military is bigger than the next 15 largest combined, and not the thing that's going to get us in trouble, despite our misadventures. We're good at war, since, being a hammer, everything is a nail – which is why we should probably send the Marines down to Louisiana to do battle with the leak. Among the more credible rumours: a bomb could be used to end this underwater disaster right now. But BP would likely object. In any case, what we do know is true: everything they've done so far to stop the leak has been tried on every other oil spill before, and has never worked. Dead animals continue to wash ashore. If it were not actually happening, this oil spill would make the perfect apocalyptic leitmotif in a Thomas Pynchon work of American jeremiad.I'm not sure how this mess looks to the rest of the world, but around here, it's arousing rare rage. Everyday BP CEO Tony Hayward is not drowned in the Gulf is miraculous. After 50-plus days of living with this, I am asto

    • Twilight's feminist backlash | Bidisha
That a woman created Bella's man-worshipping, abuse-excusing pathology is baffling – luckily strong heroines abound elsewhereSo. Twilight Eclipse. Wolfboy Jacob lurks nudely, rudely, buffly, looking ever-ready for some lupine tussling out yonder. Vampire Edward appears to be struggling with constipation. And Bella, how goes it with her? Do you know, I can't remember. Who is she? Nobody. What does she do? Nothing. Where is she without men? Nowhere. Want to know what Bella's secret power is? It's the power of negation. She's such a deadzone of psychic antimatter that supernatural mojo doesn't work on her. Other characters' magical skills simply dissolve when they encounter the sullen ringfence of her anticharisma.Bella's passivity, the oppressiveness of her boyfriends (presented as protectiveness), the fetishisation of female victimhood and the unstinting justification of the guys' abusiveness have spurred a strong feminist backlash against the books – a backlash which I fully support. Part of our sense of disturbance and bafflement is that while all the misogynist elements of Twilight are detectable in mainstream arts and the media, they are rarely created by women. Why would a dynamic, creative, prolific and talented woman like Stephenie Meyer write a protagonist as useless as this? Why would she create bullying males and set them up as love objects? Do young women despise themselves so much that the very best they can fantasise about is trailing around after not one but two bullies? It's puzzling. I grew up obsessively reading adventure novels by Tamora Pierce, the Worst Witch series and all sorts of bronze breastplate Amazonian guff. The women in these books bristled with chagrin and energy, as did their lovers, allies, enemies and friends. How could publishing have ta

The BBC's science and environment correspondent David Shukman joins us in the studio to discuss the BP oil spill and the pitfalls of reporting on climate change. In David's new book, Reporting Live From the End of the World, he describes his adventures as a roving environment correspondent. A gaggle of geeks recently invaded the Guardian's London headquarters for a hack day. Their leader, Jeremy Keith, reveals the results of two days of brainstorming. As part of its Who Am I? exhibition, London's Science Museum has held an event to mark the tenth anniversary of the first draft sequence of the human genome. We spoke to Mike Stratton, director of the Wellcome Trust's Sanger Institute, and nobel prizewinning biologist John Sulston, who tells us human gene patents restrict access to treatments and inhibit research. We dissect the BMJ's cancer study on mobile phone masts using our story tracker. The Guardian's Nell Boase and Observer's science editor Robin McKie are in the studio.
