The Coxes had threatened to move the boys' casket if Josh Powell were interred nearby.Powell relatives had visited the Woodbine Cemetery and initially selected a plot near where 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden Powell are buried.Josh Powell killed his sons and himself in a gas-fueled blaze on 5 February at a home he was renting in Graham. More than 1,000 mourners attended the boys' funeral Saturday. They were later buried in a single casket at Woodbine, a municipal cemetery in Puyallup.Josh Powell was a suspect in Susan Powell's 2009 disappearance from their home in West Valley City, Utah. He had always claimed that he didn't know what happened to his wife. He took the boys – then two and four – on a midnight camping trip in freezing weather in the Utah desert, he said, and when he returned home the next day authorities were at the house looking for her.Weeks later, he moved the boys to his father's home in Puyallup. After Steve Powell's arrest on voyeurism and child pornography charges last fall, the boys were removed from the house and turned over to the Coxes.A social worker brought them to Josh Powell's rental home for what was supposed to be a court-sanctioned supervised visit. • The conversation: Can Europe pull back from the brink?
Can Europe pull back from the brink of total economic chaos? Newsnight's Paul Mason and the FT's Gillian Tett weigh up the options and make their predictionsThis week the crisis in the eurozone boiled over and the prime ministers of two countries were forced out as a breakup of the single currency was openly discussed for the first time. Paul Mason of BBc2's Newsnight and Gillian Tett of the Financial Times discuss what will happen next with Susanna Rustin.Susanna Rustin: Were you surprised to see two European leaders replaced by technocrats?Gillian Tett: No – the situation calls for very firm, forward-looking action that is almost impossible in a rowdy democratic political system at the moment.Paul Mason: Don't kid yourself these are technocrats. In Greece there is effectively a political truce but I don't know how long New Democracy [the opposition] will stick with a plan they fundamentally disagree with, because of its emphasis on taxing the middle class. Mario Monti will give Italy about a month's grace.GT: The problem is you neither have anybody who has the authority to force a solution, nor do you have sufficiently free markets and genuine democracy to get a bottom-up solution. So you're caught in this limbo-land where you stagger from one mini-crisis to another.SR: If elected governments in Greece and Italy can't manage these crises, where does that leave the rest of us?PM: Greece's two main parties have very strong networks that have kept in check much of the outrage. • Synthetic biology: the best hope for mankind's future? | Johnjoe McFadden
If GM is agriculture's Ford Cortina, synthetic biology could give us Ferrari crops that feed the world without harming the planetThe UK government has just declared that synthetic biology – the science of making novel living organisms – could lead to a new industrial revolution and should be a research priority. Many environmentalists argue instead that creating new life forms could endanger the existing ones. But it may be that synthetic biology is our best hope of preserving life on our planet.Mankind has, and continues to have, a huge impact on the planet. About 50,000 years ago, much of Australia was covered in dense rainforests grazed by large herbivores who were preyed upon by roaming marsupial carnivores. Ten thousand years later the forests, the megafauna and the carnivores were all gone. What happened? Many explanations have been proposed, such as climate change or ecosystem collapse, but a recent extensive study of pollen samples by Susan Rule and colleagues of the Australian National University points the finger at a single culprit: man. People arrived on the northern coastline about 45,000 years ago and burnt and hunted their way across the continent, leaving a trail of destruction and extinctions in their wake.A similar wave of extinctions followed the peopling of the Americas about 15,000 years ago; and also accompanied the arrival of modern man into Europe, in that case taking with it our Neanderthal cousins. Everywhere we have travelled we have squashed thousands of species beneath our boots.Almost always the harm is unintentional, a kind of byproduct of our own success as we clear land to grow crops or kill game to roast in our fires. Conventional technology has given us a bigger boot print that treads even the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. Th null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • The best theatre of 2011: Susannah Clapp's choice
It's been a great year for Southwark Playhouse, Hampstead and the National – and an unforgettable one for Michael SheenThe Passion was the year's revelation. Ranging over the whole of Port Talbot, bringing people out in droves, rousing them to cheers and reducing them to tears, Wildworks' wonderful pageant took outdoor theatre to new heights. It proved the strength of the National Theatre of Wales, who move from place to place with no fixed base. It showed how the transcendent can be mapped on to the everyday. It revealed Michael Sheen, once Tony Blair and now Jesus Christ, as natural and commanding; later in the year, he was a firecracker Hamlet in Ian Rickson's dynamic madhouse staging at the Young Vic.Two other theatres flew high. Edward Hall's artistic directorship has restored Hampstead as a beacon of new writing: the year began with Nina Raine's unflinching, swirlingly staged hospital drama Tiger Country, and ended with Richard Eyre's fine production of Nicholas Wright's sharp-edged The Last of the Duchess. Hall also brought Shakespeare to Hampstead for the first time, with his tremendous all-male Propeller company, who had triumphed at Sheffield in an unexpected, illuminating pairing of The Comedy of Errors and Richard III. Chris Smyrnios's Southwark Playhouse was at the forefront of the smaller theatres, with Thom Southerland's pent-in, close-up staging of Parade, and Vinette Robinson (later Sheen's Ophelia) shining alongside Jack Gordon in David Mercatali's fiery production of Tender Napalm. Meanwhile, the National produced one of its biggest, most buoyant and popular comedies in Richard Bean's One Man, Two Guvnors and one of its most incisive and disturbing dramas in London Road, which brought together the terrific talents of composer Adam Cork and documentari null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. • Letters: Lesbian stereotypes
Julie Bindel peddles the same old stereotypes and perpetuates the same dated lesbian images (Anti-lesbianism is a ruse to keep all women in our place, 26 May). An out lesbian, I dress, for the occasion, to look good for my partner, to look professional, but not to make a political point centred around how men view the world. Lip Service is populated by skinny, glamorous women, but so are other soapy dramas: unattainable female representations are sadly not an issue limited to lesbians. It is true that lesbians are underrepresented in mainstream entertainment and other fields. This needs to change. But lesbians are a diverse bunch, not one solely defined by their sexuality or one particular way of presenting themselves. Donna MattfieldOxford• Julie Bindel's attitude toward straight women and men is as bigoted as any prejudice which lumps all members of any group into an assumed set of behaviours.Susan WolfeLondonSexualityGay rightsWomenguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. Thank you for Giles Fraser's moving piece on the eviction of Occupy LSX from St Paul's (From a colourful camp to a dismal metal fence: the end of Occupy St Paul's, 29 February), but where was your reporting on the actual events? The photo of police dragging George Barda from the steps is revealing, but why no comment from the Guardian about the questions this raises? The court eviction order applied to the tents and specifically excluded people, so why was he (and others) removed at all? And bailiffs evict, the police attend only to ensure public safety, so under what powers were the police acting, and was it beyond the scope of the court order? Perhaps the cathedral asked the police to remove all people? If so, why? We ought to know. And why no word on the more questionable, more violent eviction that took place simultaneously at Occupy's School of Ideas? Within hours of this action, Islington's long-disused Moorfield primary school was demolished. Not newsworthy?Susan BaileyKings Langley, Hertfordshire• Your editorial (29 February) seems baffled and a little disdainful about the decision-making process of Occupy – namely by consensus at a general assembly. It is right, of course, that if you want a train ticket to Cardiff you do not need a discussion about it, rather to check fares and times on a website. Centralism in some matters allows space for democracy in others, and the general assembly, or mass meeting, is a very democratic form. The issue comes with decisions that are taken. Who is tasked with doing them – clearly not everyone – and how are they held accountable? This is the question the labour movement has grappled with for the last 200 years or so. • Occupy Wall Street: march on police plaza - live
The Occupy Wall Street demonstrators are planning to march on the New York police department headquarters in protest at last week's pepper-spray controversy3.29pm: Adam Gabbatt has been surveying the scene at the New York Police Department headquarters, where barriers have been put up in preparation for the expected march later this afternoon. A police officer has told Adam that the protesters, if they arrive, will be channelled through the barriers in order to prevent them getting near the building. Lines of police officers will ring the barriers. Adam says it looks like quite a small space: if there are a large number of protesters, things could get quite tense here, I think.3pm: The anti-Wall Street protests are continuing in Lower Manhattan. Police have allowed the protesters to stay at their makeshift camp in Zuccotti Park in the Financial District, and the this week a stream of celebrities arrived to pay homage to the occupiers of this ramshackle collection of tents and sleeping bags.Until now, it has been the usual suspects: the actor and activist Susan Sarandon, radical film-maker Michael Moore (twice), the Outkast rapper Big Boi, and the provocative black intellectual Cornel West. For a time today, it looked as if the celebrity score would go to a new level, with reports that Radiohead, who are in town for a series of concerts, would play an unannounced gig at the park. Unfortunately, it was announced (by the protesters) and then denied (by the band's public relations firm). Whether it goes ahead or not remains a moot point – and in any case the substantive story today is that the protesters are planning a march on the New York Police Department headquarters in protest at the now-notorious use of pepper spray at last Saturday's demonstration. Our reporter Adam Ga

    • Letters: Teach philosophy in our schools
We share the view that introducing philosophy lessons in the classroom from a very early age would have immense benefits in terms of boosting British schoolchildren's reasoning and conceptual skills, better equipping them for the complexities of life in the 21st century, where ubiquitous technology and rapid social change are the order of the day. There is a growing body of evidence that philosophy can be of huge importance in opening up young minds. Reasoning skills and habits improve learning in other subjects on the curriculum and do not require purchasing expensive equipment and classroom resources. The long-term imperative must be to recruit more specialist philosophy teachers and to increase the number of philosophy graduates. However, in the short to medium term we also call for the introduction of a new specialist teacher training diploma in philosophy. It is our opinion that this will make sure children from all backgrounds get the advantages philosophy at a young age can bring in terms of intellectual and social development.Angie Hobbs Senior fellow in the public understanding of philosophy, University of WarwickAriane Sherine Comedy writer and journalistSusan Greenfield Scientist, writer, broadcasterBettany Hughes Historian, broadcasterDiana Janney Philosopher, authorDr Anthony Seldon Political historian and educationalist, master, Wellington CollegeDr Catherine C McCall Philosopher and originator of 'Socrates for 6-year-olds'Dr Julian Baggini Philosopher, broadcasterDr Miranda Fricker Senior lecturer in philosophy, Birkbeck, University of LondonDr Rosanna Keefe University of SheffieldDr Scott Sturgeon University of OxfordDr Simon Glendinning Philosopher, LSEMark Vernon Philosopher, journalistMichael Hand Institute of Education, editor of Philosophy in Schools _NULL_

Former San Francisco baseball star misled federal grand jury under oath in 2003Barry Bonds, the US baseball star Barry Bonds has been found guilty in San Francisco of obstruction of justice in relation to a federal investigation into the use of steroids by athletes. But the judge declared a mistrial on three charges of perjury after the jury failed to reach a verdict. The obstruction charge could mean a custodial sentence.Bonds, 46, was accused of lying to a federal grand jury in 2003 when he said under oath he had taken two substances identified as steroids but that he had been unaware they had been steroids. He had also said nobody other than his doctor had injected him with anything.Bonds, who spent much of his career with the San Francisco Giants, hit 762 home runs, more than any other player in the history of Major League Baseball. His lawyers asked for the guilty verdict in relation to obstruction be thrown out. Judge Susan Illston did not rule on the request and set 20 May for a hearing in the case.During the 12-day trial, the prosecution claimed Greg Anderson, Bond's personal trainer, had provided him with steroids. Anderson was jailed at the start of the trial for refusing to testify against him but was released after the prosecution and defence wound up.Bonds's personal shopper, Kathy Hoskins, testified she had seen Anderson inject Bonds in 2002.Bonds got caught up in an investigation into a company selling illegal drugs to athletes.United StatesDrugs in sportEwen MacAskillguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds The閉。

Cycling reduces air pollution, itself a cause of depression, and increases endorphin levels, leading to feelings of wellbeing. As exercise is also recommended as a way of reducing unhappiness and David Cameron wants to make us all happier, why does he not put more resources into improving conditions for cyclists? • The continuing disgrace of John McCain | Michael Tomasky
The vote tally on the Start treaty is now posted. Twelve count 'em 12 Republicans voted for it, and in the spirit of the season, let's give them propers: Lamar Alexander, Tennessee; Robert Bennett, Utah; Scott Brown, Massachusetts; Thad Cochran, Mississippi; Susan Collins, Maine; Bob Corker, Tennessee; Johnny Isakson, Georgia; Mike Johanns, Nebraska (interesting, the only one surprising to me; helps give Ben Nelson cover in 2012, no?); Dick Lugar, Indiana; Lisa Murkowski, Alaska; Olympia Snowe, Maine; George Voinovich, Ohio. Kind of amazing. All Democrats voted for. Even Ron Wyden made it back from prostate surgery.Missing from the list? A certain McCain fellow. He really has now just degenerated completely into being a hack. Who can possibly take the man seriously anymore? You just know he's lying through his teeth when he ladles that praise on Sarah Palin. And as for Start, it's exactly the kind of thing he used to be in the Senate to help put his stamp on.In truth, McCain has always had a reputation for standing on the sidelines, throwing stink bombs, then sweeping in at the end to gobble up credit. Except on campaign finance and a couple other things on which he genuinely did do the work. But now he's just a complete joke. I can understand if you're a conservative you'd have preferred him as president. But for the rest of us...God forbid. Meanwhile, this session of Congress...geez. Obama could lose an election tomorrow and still be one of the most active and successful presidents of the modern era. • Time to save the tuna | Susan Lieberman
Stocks of Atlantic bluefin tuna are on the brink of collapse thanks to overfishing, largely for our sushi. We must stop fishing nowAtlantic bluefin tuna are one of the most remarkable fish in the sea. Their amazing biology allows them to dive down to 1,000m and race through the water at extraordinary speeds, migrating thousands of kilometres across the ocean each year. Yet, today, overfishing – some of it illegal, unregulated and unreported – has taken an enormous toll. Many of the world's foremost marine scientists now believe that populations of Atlantic bluefin are on the brink of collapse (pdf). In fact, recent studies by fisheries scientists show that the species has declined more than 80% since 1970. Efforts at protection, though, continue to fall short.Fuelled largely by the lucrative global market in sushi and sashimi, the high value of bluefin has placed significant political pressure on those responsible for managing global tuna populations. When it has counted most, the international community has allowed short-term profits to trump the long-term health of our oceans. One notable example happened this spring at the 2010 meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Every year, billions of plants and animals are taken from the wild and sold as food, pets, souvenirs and medicines. CITES was adopted in the 1970s to help balance the needs of commerce and conservation – ensuring that trade in animal products doesn't endanger a species' very existence. At its heart is a rigorous scientific review process that provides governments with objective information to evaluate when overexploitation merits international protection. However, when a proposal was submitted to CITES last M 大西洋のクロマグロの株式は、当社の寿司主は、乱獲と崩壊のおかげで危機に瀕している

    • Mike Starr obituary
Alice in Chains bass player at the heart of Seattle's grunge-rock soundstandfirst here and here and hereand here and hereThe American rock musician Mike Starr, who has been found dead aged 44, achieved international success as the bass player for Alice in Chains. Formed in Seattle in 1987, the band came to be regarded by many as second only to Nirvana when grunge rock became popular in the early 1990s.Starr, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, had previously played with the guitarist Jerry Cantrell and the drummer Sean Kinney in a group called Diamond Lie. Shortly after being joined by the vocalist Layne Staley, they renamed themselves Alice in Chains and developed a sound that mixed huge, Black Sabbath-flavoured riffs with the aggression and nihilistic angst of punk.Alice in Chains quickly won a loyal following around Seattle and Washington state. Cantrell's expressive guitar textures meshed well with Staley's weary vocals while Starr and Kinney locked down huge, rolling rhythms. A local promoter, Randy Hauser, was so impressed by the band that he financed a recording demo and passed it on to Susan Silver, the manager of another emerging Seattle group, Soundgarden. With Silver as their manager, the band signed to Columbia Records and released an EP, We Die Young, in July 1990, attracting a strong response from US rock radio. A month later, the group's debut album, Facelift, was released to a positive critical response but modest initial sales.Seattle was becoming known for a popular new American rock sound dubbed grunge, which blurred the boundaries between heavy metal and hardcore punk and eschewed the posturing that had rendered the Los Angeles rock scene a cartoon. (C) SUMMARY: Bulgaria has decided to approve the sale of arms from a private Bulgarian firm to the Government of Yemen. The deal, funded by the UAE and worth approximately USD 55 million, will send small arms, explosives, ammunition, and other weaponry to Yemen in the first half of 2010. In light of the increasingly unstable situation in Yemen, and in response to our proposal for greater end-use monitoring, the Bulgarian Export Commission agreed to take extra steps to ensure proper delivery, storage, and accountability for the shipments, which began on January 5. The Export Commission passed on identification numbers for all items and stated that Bulgaria will comply with a USG proposal for additional monitoring, as well as coordinated efforts with their embassy in Yemen to heighten safeguards for proper delivery. Although not mandatory, Bulgaria continues to consult with us on an informal basis on arms deals involving potentially controversial destinations. END SUMMARY.2. • Why has Iran been kicked off the board of the UN's new agency for women? | Sarah Boseley
Saudi Arabia has a seat on the board of the new UN agency for women – but Iran has been ejected over its human rights recordSetting up a new UN agency is a fraught business. UN Women, designed to fight for the rights of women in the developing world in a way previous UN agencies did not manage, is no different. Following hard political lobbying from the US and human rights groups, Iran has been ejected from the board. This is the view of Kathy Peach, head of external affairs at VSO:Giving Iran a place on the board would have been a huge blow for women's rights around the globe and a huge setback for the hundreds of organisations who campaigned for the creation of UN Women. Iran's track record on women's rights, including the high-profile case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, rightly undermined its credibility to sit on an executive board tasked with securing a just and fair world for women.Iran had originally secured an uncontested seat, but was ejected after East Timor decided to compete – perhaps with a little persuasion? It is interesting, however, that Iran – one of the west's least favourite nations – should be pushed out while Saudi Arabia – not known for its strong stance on equality – has a place. So do Libya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.US ambassador Susan Rice told the BBC that the US was pleased with the outcome after Iran lost at the ballot.I am not going to deny that there were several countries that are going to join the board of UN Women that have less than stellar records on women's rights, and indeed human rights. It does make me wonder, however, whether being kicked off the board of UN Women is more likely to help – or hinder – change in Iran?

    • Hanna Behrend obituary
My friend Hanna Behrend, who has died aged 88, was a leading academic in the former German Democratic Republic and an expert on all matters of life in the GDR. She travelled regularly to Britain where she made friendships with many fellow academics and gave lectures on English literature, feminism and the politics of German unification. She was born in Vienna, Austria, but as a Jewish teenager was driven into exile, first in France and then in Britain, by the rise of the Nazis. She spent most of the second world war in Britain. Once the war was over, she returned to east Berlin to help build what she hoped would be a new democratic and anti-fascist Germany. She studied history and English at Humboldt University in Berlin and later completed her doctoral thesis there. After earning a living as a translator and editor of English texts, she began lecturing in the university's English faculty. She became the project leader for studies on the working-class literature of Britain and Ireland. During the 1970s and 80s she sat on a ministerial committee for teaching English in higher education. In 1982 she became assistant professor for English literature at Humboldt University. After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, she criticised the marginalisation of GDR academics, as detailed in the book she edited for Pluto Press, German Unification: The Destruction of An Economy (1995). Hanna was the author of a number of well-received books and in 2008 published her autobiography, Die 。。berleberin: Jahrzehnte in Atlantis (The Survivor: Decades in Atlantis).Hanna had a son, Hansjürgen, from her marriage to Hugo Köditz. • The don't ask repeal vote | Michael Tomasky
It's a great historic moment, the repeal of the don't ask don't tell law, allowing gay people to serve openly in the military, making the US just about the last advanced country to reach this very normal point.John McCain, on whose increasingly shabby escutcheon this blot will linger, argued on the Senate floor Saturday that there's no proof that the policy has hurt the armed services. Bollocks. We know that more than 13,000 people, presumably most of them otherwise good to exemplary, have been booted from the military because of their sexuality. And of course it is impossible to know how many talented young people who were eager to lend their talents to their country simply didn't bother. If 13,000 people were kicked out and X number who wanted to couldn't serve, I'd say that's damage. The vote is interesting in certain respects. The 65-31 Senate tally included six Republicans, as you've probably read, and good for them: Scott Brown, Richard Burr, Susan Collins, John Ensign, Mark Kirk, Lisa Murkowski, Olympia Snowe and George Voinovich. Burr of North Carolina and Ensign of Nevada are the most interesting. The others are all from blue states and can credibly be called occasional moderates. Burr and Ensign are conservatives, but they represent blue-states-for-now too (in the sense that Obama won them), so we see that some historically conservative states are indeed changing. On the Democratic side, it's interesting that three Democrats from purple-to-red states who face reelection in 2012 bit the bullet and voted yes: Jim Webb of Virginia, Jon Tester of Montana and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Less courage from Joe Manchin of West Virginia, also a red-stater up in 2012. He ducked the vote. Defensible, politically, considering that he got elected saying he wouldn't go to Washing

    • Letters: Mordechai Vanunu's cruel treatment
On 11 May the nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was sentenced to a further three months in prison, to start on 23 May. This latest sentence follows his objection to doing community service in West Jerusalem, where he reasonably feared for his safety. He was quite prepared to work in East Jerusalem, but this compromise was denied him by the supreme court. This most recent court hearing arose because Vanunu had been charged with breaking the draconian restrictions imposed on him ever since his release, in 2004, from his 18-year prison sentence – 11½ of which were spent in solitary confinement. These cruel and arbitrary restrictions forbade Vanunu freedom of movement, expression and association, in complete contravention of international law and his human rights. The continuing and outrageous harassment of Vanunu, for telling the world the truth of Israel's possession of nuclear weapons, all of 24 years ago, comes right at the start of the 2010 negotiations, at the United Nations in New York, to strengthen not only the international ban on nuclear weapons but also the 1968 non-proliferation treaty. This cynical treatment of Vanunu is a clear indication, once again, that Israel cares nothing for human rights legislation, nor any attempts to limit the possession, development and general spread of nuclear weapons.Tony Benn, Ben Birnberg, Jeremy Dear, Bruce Kent, Jenny Morgan, Susannah York and Ernest RodkerIsraelNuclear weaponsNon-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)United NationsHuman rightsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds 5月11日。通報モルデハイバヌヌで刑務所でさらに3ヶ月、5月23日開始を言い渡された

    • 'The mystery is enough': Susan Lipper on the Grapevine series
The photographer discusses sexual segregation in West Virginia and avoiding stereotypes about the American southTell me about the gestation of the Grapevine series of photographs?About 20 years ago I travelled down to the South and roamed around the Appalachians essentially looking for a subject. I found it in Grapevine Hollow. There are actually four Grapevines in West Virginia but this one isn't even on the map. I was down there for two years before I found it. There are maybe 50 people in the community, spread out on the mountain. I've been going back there every summer ever since. Were the people initially suspicious of you?Well a girl from the north with a camera was a source of some ... not suspicion ... but novelty, I guess. But they opened their houses to me and they said I could stay. One family pointed up the mountain and told me I could be buried there. I've come to love the place and the people. I go back every summer. I ring Grapevine almost every night. It's a real friendly place even though there is some crazy stuff that goes on there. What was your initial intention for the project?I came out of the Yale photography programme. Walker Evans was certainly a touchstone, but what I do is not a sociopolitical treatise on the area. I'm not making any big statement. In terms of subject matter, I was primarily interested in male-female relationships. I went down there from New York and I saw a bunch of scenarios I hadn't ever been around. Let's just say it was a much more traditional place with non-urban values. Photographers were still going down there to do the stereotypical take on the rural south and hillbillies and all that, and I wanted to deal with that in the photographs, too.You certainly play with those tropes in a pretty provocative way.The society is p

    • One last win for Obama as Elena Kagan joins the US Supreme Court | Richard Adams
Elena Kagan's confirmation continues the White House's run of victories this year. But from now Obama faces a rougher timeThere have been thunder and lightning outside in Washington DC, but inside the Senate chamber it was plain sailing for Elena Kagan's nomination to join the US Supreme Court.Kagan was comfortably confirmed as an associate justice by a vote of 63 to 37, with five Republicans – Lindsay Graham, Judd Gregg, Richard Lugar, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe – crossing the aisle to vote for Kagan and just one Democrat – the always disappointing Ben Nelson of Nebraska – voting against. The remarkably trouble-free confirmation process for Kagan means that three of the nine members of the Supreme Court will be women, itself a remarkable shift in the court's make-up since Kagan will be only the fourth woman to sit on the nation's highest bench. And it means that Obama has already successfully nominated as many justices his predecessors George Bush and Bill Clinton: two.Republicans made a half-hearted effort to fight Kagan's nomination, attempting to paint her as anti-gun and anti-military, but couldn't make it stick, in part because the Democratic majority in Senate made it numerically too difficult and because Kagan was replacing a liberal justice, John Paul Stevens, thus not upsetting the balance of the court, which currently has a conservative bent – the most conservative in decades, according to New York Times analysis. As well, the White House did an excellent job guiding its candidate through the process, while Kagan herself didn't put a foot wrong. On top of the successful nominations of Sonia Sotomayor and Kagan, the administration has also had success in passing its healthcare reform and its overhaul of financial regulations, which is a lot of heavy lifting エレナカガンの確認は、今年の勝利のホワイトハウスの実行を継続します

    • Letter: Veil ban debate
Raphaël Liogier is right to point out the problems with France's proposed ban on the veil (Comment, 27 January, which will pave the way for similar moves against other visible expressions of religion. Shutting down the right to choose to wear the veil will only further embolden Islamophobia, the far right and fascist parties. The debate has had the net effect of demonising a minority of Muslim women, who number less than 2,000 in France. It will mean the only option for many of these women will be to stay confined to their homes. All this, ironically, in the name of integration and the liberation of women. We are one society and many cultures; respecting and allowing all cultures freedom of expression, as long as this does not impinge on the rights of others, means all communities can fully contribute to society. The debate in France is already impacting here, with Ukip calling for a ban on the burka and niqab. These issues and many others will be discussed at the Progressive London conference this Saturday.Ken Livingstone, Susan Kramer MP, Claude Moraes MEP, Jenny Jones Green party, Cllr Salma Yaqoob, Edie Friedman Jewish Council for Racial Equality, Anas Altikiriti British Muslim Initiative, Billy Hayes General secretary, Communication Workers, Bellavia Ribeiro-Addy NUS Black Students Officer, Weyman Bennett and Sabby Dhalu Joint national secretaries, Unite Against Fascism, Lindsey German National convener, Stop the WarIslamFranceReligionLondonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds ラファエルLiogierベール、フランスの禁止案(コメントを1月27日は、宗教の他の目に見える表現と同様の動きに道を開くことで問題を指摘する権利です
