- Herman Cain's loss, Newt Gingrich's gain | Ana Marie Cox
As Cain bows out, his support shifts to Gingrich. It all leaves one wondering what sort of shape the GOP will be in to fight 2012Herman Cain appears to be on the verge of endorsing Newt Gingrich – even if Cain's supporters seem to have beat him to it. Cain has so few options over what to do with his dwindling cachet that a decision to endorse Newt is really more like an attempt by Cain to remain relevant – if he ever really was anything beyond a placeholder for voters' dissatisfaction. Cain's exit speech was as vague and defensive as has campaign, though such characteristics hardly disqualify candidates these days. Newt's positions may seem relatively concrete and his personality somewhat less ticklish – he's certainly a more able dissembler – but his core appeal is the same as Cain's: he is vessel of hope for a conservative victory rather than a Republican one. The Republican party faithful's reluctance to embrace the party's choice (and make no mistake, Mitt Romney is the party's choice) is the animating force of this entire primary. Gingrich's great luck to have found the last remaining seat in the musical chair contest leading up to the Iowa caucuses sets the stage for a showdown that could resemble the Obama-Clinton contest of 2008 in its length and in its vitriol. In the past, the GOP has avoided drag-out nomination fights with winner-take-all primary contests; party officials believed a more incremental process would leave the eventual nominee too bloodied to hold up in a general election. We know how well McCain's long rest between cinching the nomination and facing Obama worked out last time. A long primary process could give the eventual GOP nominee the same sort of energy that helped Obama surge forth four years ago. - The French in London: Bienvenue, François Hollande?
As the Socialist presidential candidate takes the campaign trail to London, we take the pulse of the British capital's varied and vocal French community.10.15am: Bonjour à tous!Today, to the delight of some and no doubt the derision of others, François Hollande- the erstwhile leader of the Parti Socialiste and current front-runner in the battle for the French presidency- is coming to London. He'll be lunching with Ed Miliband, categorically not lunching with David Cameron, giving a talk at King's College and generally raising his profile on this side of the Channel. Why? Well, as anyone who has caught a whiff of croissant or crepe while strolling through South Kensington will know, there are quite a lot of French people here. Quite how many is difficult to pin-point, but the consulate reckons that anything up to 400,000 people could be resident- a figure that would mean there are more French people here than in Nantes (population roughly 283,000) or even Nice (population roughly 341,000). Wily political animal that he is, Nicolas Sarkozy realised what this could mean in electoral terms in 2007, when he paid a visit to the city of the Tamise (that's the Thames) and spoke to roaring crowds at the Old Billingsgate market. Now, it appears, his challenger for the Elysée is doing the same- and hoping for a similar recompense.Today, while my colleague Angelique Chrisafis hops on the Eurostar in hot pursuit of the man himself, I'll be attempting to take the pulse of the French community here in London. What do they think of Hollande, and his bid to become France's first left-wing president since François Mitterrand? Are they, like an apparently large number of their brethren back home, determined to oust Sarkozy quicker than you can say 'cuban heels and Carla Bruni'? - Involved in the trade union movement? | John Harris
A anti-cuts march next month will be led by trade unions. Please share your experiences of unions with usOn Saturday 26 March, thousands of people will march through London to protest against the cuts, in a demonstration staged by the organisations who currently sit at the centre of so many news stories: the trade unions. Their supposed decline into irrelevance has been forecast for decades, but they are still here; and in times like these (as I argued in this Comment is free piece) they represent by far the strongest source of opposition to the government – which may be why the coalition is considering fresh anti-union legislation. With all that in mind, we want to focus our next Anywhere but Westminster film and article on the unions' grassroots: the shop stewards, reps and officials who see to things well away from the attentions of the media, and often have a clear understanding of where Britain is heading. A good example: this week, David Cameron has announced plans to outsource and privatise just about every conceivable part of the public sector – a direction of travel with which thousands of union activists have been familiar for years. So, an appeal for testimony and information. Are you a trade union activist? Are you trying to form a union in your workplace? Are you involved in a dispute or grievance with your employer (whether public or private) that says something about the role unions play in the economy and society, and why millions of people would be lost without them? Or are you dissatisfied with your trade union and think it needs reform in some way? If so, we'd like to hear from you, either via the thread below, or at anywherebutwestminster@gmail.com.Obviously, we expect the cuts to loom large here, but we're equally interested in other issues that might _NULL_

- State of the union speech: sending in the seals | Editorial
Barack Obama adopted a toughness of tone that many supporters say he should have had years agoState of the union speeches are rarely what they purport to be. Presented as bipartisan checklists, they have a deeply partisan purpose. Barack Obama's performance on Tuesday night was less high-flown than most. In it he adopted a toughness of tone that many supporters say he should have had years ago. It may, as the Washington Post observed, have been wrapped in kumbaya, but the underlying sense of confrontation was unmissable. Mr Obama's new-found aggression goes against the grain. He is neither a populist by temperament nor by nature. When he tries to wrap himself in a flag, let alone one signed by the Navy Seal team that killed Osama bin Laden, he is unconvincing. Does an elite, and brutally selected, commando unit really provide a useful inspiration for the world's biggest economy? The stakes in November will be high, as the Republican debate during its primaries has only too clearly reminded us. Just as the two problems at the root of the US slump – the housing bust and excessive debt – are starting to ease, in might come a president whose ideology is destined to snuff out the fragile recovery. A righteous belief is at the core of a Republican programme that sees too much government as the cause of America's economic crisis, not, as is patently true, too little. This is not susceptible to empirical reasoning or to negotiation. It must be seen off by a leader capable of getting his way. If not, the rich will run riot. The gap in incomes and opportunities will grow further, and Mr Obama's reversible first-term achievements will go straight down the plughole. - Pandas are political animals | Henry Nicholls
Cute, yes. But pandas are also powerful diplomatic assets for China, as well as consummate fundraisersThe apparent newsworthiness of pandas coming to Edinburgh zoo may be largely down to the public's delight in this distinctive bear. But the lobbying for them underlines that the panda has become more than a zoological curiosity. With the rise of modern China, its black-and-white emissary has become an increasingly political animal.Pandas divide opinion. For the unabashed pandaphile, there are the big, black eyes, the baby-like body proportions and the endearing rough-and-tumble antics. This combination of cutesy characteristics is impossible to resist. Pandaphiles are easily identified by their habit of head-tilting, cooing and being prepared to fork out cash for a photograph with this rare natural wonder. For pandaphobics, the panda is a waste of evolutionary space, a carnivore that only eats bamboo, and has an appetite for sex that is all but absent. But pandaphobes must also have a soft spot for pandas, if only because of the fun they get from sneering at the male panda's paltry winkie.I suspect there is a third category: the pandapathetic – serious people who refuse to fawn over or laugh at pandas. They are the most resistant to the panda's many charms, but will usually acknowledge the powerful position the panda has assumed in global culture.Since the 1950s China has been grooming this unique animal as a national treasure. It has also become the pre-eminent anthropomorphic star of advertising campaigns the world over, selling everything from radios and fizzy drinks to cigarettes, not to mention global conservation. The Worldwide Fund for Nature's decision to use the panda as its logo half a century ago added a do-gooding gloss to this already attractive animal. In s _NULL_

- Bradley Manning defence motion to drop charges denied at pretrial hearing
Defence had asked that 22 criminal charges against Manning be dropped over prosecution's slow speed in sharing documentsA military judge has refused to throw out the charges against US army private Bradley Manning, who is accused of the biggest leak of government secrets in the country's history.Army colonel Denise Lind on Wednesday denied the defence motion to dismiss all 22 charges during a pretrial hearing in Manning's court martial. Manning is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents to WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy website run by Julian Assange. The defence has filed a separate motion seeking dismissal of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy. That offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Lind tentatively scheduled the trial to run from 21 September to 12 October. Manning has not entered a plea.On Tuesday, the two sides engaged in a sometimes heated courtroom debate over defence claims that prosecutors haven't met their obligation to provide Manning's lawyers with evidence they uncover that could aid the defence, a process called discovery.Manning's lawyers had argued that prosecutors were so slow in sharing required information with the defence that the only remedy was to throw out the charges.Prosecutors maintained that they needed time to obtain documents from civilian agencies and search the records for relevant material. They also accused the defence of making an overly broad, vague request for information.Lind asked the prosecutors on Tuesday for several government assessments of potential damage caused by WikiLeaks' publication of the documents. She said she would review the assessments and determine whether they must be given to the defence team.Manning, 24, was court-martialed after he was accused of downloading the d null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Egypt's revolution urgently needs leadership | Issandr El Amrani
Egyptians feel let down by the army, yet many feel now isn't the time for elections. Let's see a national unity governmentIt didn't have to be this way. On Friday, a large peaceful protest was held against the military's attempt to impose itself into Egypt's future constitution. The generals had tried to ensure that the military budget would be above parliamentary scrutiny and other measures. The funny thing is that it was tacitly understood for a while now that the military would remain powerful in the background. But they had to put the issue on the table, and therefore make it a public contestation point. Most participants in Friday's protests left that same evening, and a few stayed overnight. By the next day only a few dozen protestors who wanted to reoccupy Tahrir remained. The police was sent to clear them, using excessive violence and firing rubber bullets into the heads of protestors, killing at least two and blinding several in one eye. The protests escalated as a result, and after an attempt to take back the square in the early morning, there were many more protestors on Sunday morning than the previous one. The attempt to dislodge them during the day, culminating in a combined army-police assault at around 5pm – apparently to clear the tents that had appeared in the square's central island – will probably only draw more people. Once again, the decisions of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and interior ministry have probably landed them in more trouble.A lot of the speculation after Sunday's events on Tahrir is that it may all be part of a plot to postpone elections. Friday was a major show of Islamist force, and it is likely that an Islamist-led parliament would choose to confront the SCAF early on ending the transition period and electing a pre null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - G20 leaders press Italy to accept IMF checks on cuts programme
European leaders urged to sign up to more specific austerity measures or else US and others will not put extra funds into IMFBarack Obama is leading a group of world leaders who are effectively ordering Silvio Berlusconi to accept surveillance of Italy's austerity measures by the International Monetary Fund. The move comes as doubts grow that the Italian prime minister has the capacity to oversee a major debt reduction programme or even to stay in power next week.Berlusconi had been expected to come to the G20 summit in Cannes with a specific austerity package in line with a lengthy letter he sent to EU leaders at an emergency summit on 27 October. But divisions within his cabinet meant he arrived empty-handed, frustrating other EU leaders concerned that the euro edifice could collapse. When asked, the chancellor, George Osborne, did not deny that Britain was making contingency plans for the break-up of the eurozone.EU leaders fear monetary meltdown is set to spread from Greece to Italy – a far larger economy, and one to which the whole European banking system is severely exposed.Italian debt yields – the rate at which the bond market is willing to buy Italian debt – rose to alarmingly high levels on Thursday before falling back slightly on the news that Greece had withdrawn a planned referendum on its austerity package. It is far from certain that the Greek government will survive a vote of confidence on Friday. There are signs that some members of Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in the lower house will defect, making it likely that the PM will be unable to survive a confidence vote next week.Berlusconi is examining proposals such as raising the pension age, dismissal for redundant public sector workers who do not accept a move to a new job within two years, and the s null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - The king of Morocco and PAM must separate | Maati Monjib and Intissar Fakir
If the king is serious about reform, he must sever all ties with the Authenticity and Modernity party in a clear and definitive wayBeneficiaries of the monarchy's patronage have come under increased scrutiny in Morocco – and none as much as the Authenticity and Modernity party (PAM). Although PAM has generally been regarded as a political tool for the monarchy, it could become a royal liability now that people are demanding greater accountability and an end to cronyism. The extent to which the palace dictates political development and progress in Morocco is shown by the speed of the party's rise.PAM gained notoriety almost as soon as it first emerged in 2007, as a fluid association called the Movement for all Democrats. The following year, it turned into a political party and came to dominate the 2009 local elections. The party currently holds 55 seats in the lower house of parliament and controls the presidency of the upper house. Yet only three of the party's founding members were elected in the 2007 legislative elections; virtually all the others migrated to PAM leaving old parties and coalitions behind. PAM certainly held many attractions to ambitious politicians who understood that political success depends on blessings from the palace.Elected officials joined the new party despite a law that forbids them from changing parties until the end of their mandate. The backing of King Mohammed no doubt helped to ensure that they got away with it.This process created deep fears within political and civil society groups but few were able to protest against the party's murky rise to power. Jaafar Hassoun, a judge known for his courage, tried to enforce the law against PAM (in the aftermath of the June 2009 municipal elections) but ended up silenced. - Kenya kidnap: former resort employee in court over murder and abduction
Kenyan says he went to police after gang made him co-operate at gunpoint in attack on British tourists David and Judith TebbuttA Kenyan man has been charged in connection with the attack in which a British tourist was shot dead and his wife kidnapped.David Tebbutt, 58, and his 56-year-old wife, Judith, were staying at the remote Kiwayu Safari Village resort on the Kenyan coast near the border with Somalia when their beach hut was stormed by gunmen early on 11 September.Tebbutt, finance director at the publisher Faber & Faber, was shot and his wife was bundled into a waiting speedboat. She has not been seen or heard from since. On Monday a former employee of the Kiwayu resort appeared in court on the nearby island of Lamu to plead not guilty to charges of kidnapping and robbery.Ali Babitu Kololo, 25, told the packed courtroom that he had been forced to co-operate with the gang at gunpoint, adding that he had voluntarily gone to police the next day to report the crime.A second man, Issa Sheck Saadi, is expected to appear in court later. The Tebbutts, from Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, had arrived at the Kiwayu after visiting the Masai Mara game reserve and were the resort's only guests.A team of Metropolitan police officers has travelled to Kenya to help local authorities with their investigations, while the Foreign Office has deployed a team to the area from the high commission in Nairobi.David Cameron said last week that the government was doing everything possible to resolve the kidnapping. The Foreign Office, which has asked the media not to speculate on Judith Tebbutt's whereabouts or the identity of her captors for fear of endangering her, is continuing to call for her release.KenyaAfricaKenyaAfricaSomaliaSam Jonesguardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media L
- Pakistan politics: contempt for voters | Editorial
Legality of supreme court's move to unseat democratically elected government before its term is highly debatableThe national reconciliation ordinance was a dirty deal, brokered by the Bush administration, between Pakistan's then military ruler Pervez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto. It allowed her to return from exile and take part in elections in exchange for the dropping of corruption charges against her husband Asif Ali Zardari and other officials. The constitutional court was right to declare it unconstitutional two years later in 2009 and, it could be argued, equally right to demand the current government's full implementation of the court's decision. The court is trying to do this by requiring the serving prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, to write to the Swiss authorities asking them to reopen a corruption inquiry against Mr Zardari. This the prime minister refuses to do on the grounds that Mr Zardari, who is now president, enjoys executive immunity from prosecution both inside and outside the country. The immunity the president enjoys while in office has not been the issue in the court, only Mr Gilani's failure to comply with an unimplementable order. Yesterday he was charged with contempt, a move which could lead to his dismissal from office. If the legality of the court's move is debatable, the politics of it are extremely murky.First the timing. Having sat on this issue for three years, the supreme court are only now moving against Mr Gilani, who has become Pakistan's longest serving prime minister. He was also the only one to be have been voted unanimously in power by parliament. Why now? With elections coming up in March 2013 which the leading party in the coalition, the Pakistan People's Party, could very well win, this is an attempt to stop the civilian gove null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - I depict a riot
London's current mayhem has a history and some great art perfectly captures the terror and lawlessness of past upheavalThese are the worst social upheavals in London in living memory, say police. What about beyond living memory? The capital has seen some spectacular riots and rebellions. The early ones were not filmed or photographed, but can be seen in old paintings and prints. In an illumination from a medieval manuscript of Froissart's Chronicles, the king and his lords in their pageantry confront an army of poor men in front of the towers and spires of London. The peasants' revolt in 1381 stormed into the capital and overran the Tower of London, whose defenders were massacred. The feudal nobility knew how to fight back. After the rebellion's leader Wat Tyler went to negotiate with the king he was stabbed to death – the nobles claimed he started it, and there were no mobile phone pictures to contradict their story – and the social order violently reimposed.King Charles I was not so lucky in the 1640s, as his quarrel with parliament degenerated into war. In London, the radical Levellers staged debates on social justice at Putney. Anthony van Dyck's portrait of two aristocratic brothers, Lord John Stuart and Lord Bernard Stuart, in the National Gallery, conveys the scale of the conflict. The painting is a silken assertion of ruling-class hauteur; these young men in their lace and long hair seem born to rule. But they never did, because both were killed fighting on the royalist side in the civil war.Neither the 1381 peasants' revolt nor the English civil war have much in common with the rioting and looting in London in August 2011, but there is far more of a parallel with the Gordon riots in 18th-century London. - Britain should consider joining the euro | John Monks
Many feel the current eurozone problems justify the UK's refusal to join. In truth, there is limited advantage in our autonomyWith the crunch EU summit today, it will seem very eccentric to many to raise the question now about whether Britain is well served in ruling out future membership of the single currency.Of course, there is an overwhelming opinion among the UK's political and economic leaders that the UK has been well served in not joining the euro. Even some experts, such as Adair Turner, who were very much in favour of UK entry at the start, have confessed that they were wrong. And as Europe's leaders struggle to resolve the problems in Greece and other distressed countries, the one British consolation has been to thank the Almighty that we are not members, that we have our own central bank and that we retain the power to devalue our currency. But this easy dismissal of the euro for Britain is ignoring some inconvenient but relevant truths. One truth is that with all the current troubles the euro has gained 25% against sterling despite all the Grecian and other dramas. The euro is a strong currency, as British holidaymakers know all too well. For a short time, the UK's devaluation did seem to work – exports and growth improved (although the rates of growth were lower than in Germany and the other northern European members). Inflation, too, remained low initially. But in the past 12 months, the recovery has stalled and inflation has soared to 5.2%.The devaluation did not give British exports a sustainable adrenalin rush. And now we are suffering from the cheaper pound as we pay more for imports of our food and energy. The inflationary impact is now painful. As the UK congratulates itself on staying aloof from the euro, it should look thoughtfully at Ireland. Ireland _NULL_
- EU fishing reforms will give fish stocks a chance to recover | Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Maria Damanaki should be applauded for her proposals, but unless we keep the pressure up, they may be discardedThe publication of today's Common Fishery Policy (CFP) proposals in Brussels is a critical moment for us all – a real, unmissable chance to change the way we catch fish, and to make sure that we preserve fish stocks for future generations. The proposals look encouraging. But it's vital to remember that these are just proposals. There is another 18 months to go before anything becomes law, and the next year-and-a-half will be full of behind-the-scenes deals and compromises cooked up by the fishing ministers of the 27 EU member states and members of the European parliament.Today's proposals show that our Fish Fighters have been heard in Europe. The commission's commitment to ending discards is a credit to their determination – and so much of it mobilised by public support. This is a bold and long-overdue step, and we should applaud fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki for that. But fishermen should be further incentivised to modify their fishing gear to more accurately target the species they want to catch, and avoid wasteful bycatch.I'd also like to see more measures to help create markets for those non-quota species whose stocks are robust, but that are currently being discarded because there's no appetite for them. At the moment it looks like these species won't be covered under the CFP proposals for a discard ban. That's a great shame. That puts an extra responsibility on fish consumers, and fish retailers, particularly the supermarkets. We need to get a bit more adventurous about the fish we eat. If we can help generate a market for fish like dab, gurnard, and pouting, then that will reduce discards of non-quota species, while taking pressure off the major quo _NULL_

- Charles Steer obituary
My father, Charles Steer, who has died aged 91, was a much-loved doctor in Kingston, Surrey, from 1952 to 1997. In 1959 he resigned from the NHS and became a private GP. Although there were attempts in the 1970s and 80s to turn him into a political figurehead for his assaults on the NHS, he insisted that his only motivation was to offer patients the quality of care and attention which he felt the resourcing of the NHS made impossible. Charles never profited greatly from medicine, and maintained a policy of treating people according to their needs rather than their means. Born in Hornchurch, Essex, and educated at Uppingham school, Rutland, he abandoned medical studies in 1939 to join the Rifle Brigade, and fought in the 8th Army with the Desert Rats, attaining the rank of captain. He collected a fascinating scrapbook of ephemera such as photos, regimental battle orders, Nazi propaganda and his own wickedly accurate cartoons.Afterwards, Charles returned to Guy's hospital, London, whose gazette featured his whimsical cartoons of hospital worthies. Once qualified, and newly married to my mother, Elizabeth Maxwell Stephens, he entered a GP partnership in Kingston. But with a growing family he became dissatisfied with the role of junior partner and decided to become an independent GP. He struggled at first, but his pleasant manner and willingness to take time listening to patients yielded increasing success. This approach undoubtedly rubbed off on his children, three of whom followed him into medicine, with my brother joining his practice in 1980.My father's skill in treating a rare condition in a young patient, involving the co-ordination of European specialists, greatly enhanced his reputation; in 1985 he published a paper on diverticular disease based on his own rese null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Nine police officers charged over violence at match in Mediterranean city in which 74 people diedEgypt's top prosecutor has charged 75 people with murder and negligence in connection with a deadly football riot last month in the Mediterranean city of Port Said.At least 74 people were killed in the riot, the world's worst football-related disaster in 15 years. Those charged on Thursday include nine police officers and two minors. Among the police officers are Major General Issam Samak, who was Port Said's chief of security at the time of the riot. Samal had already been suspended. The riot began minutes after the final whistle in a league game between Cairo club Al-Ahly and Al-Masry of Port Said. The home side won 3-1 but its fans set upon the rival supporters in a killing frenzy that witnesses said lasted 30 minutes. Many witnesses claimed that police at the venue did nothing to stop the bloodshed.A statement by the Egyptian general prosecutor's office said the charges were based on video footage of the riot and the confessions of suspects. It said the killing of the protesters was planned in advance and that the culprits prepared for the massacre with knives, rocks and explosives. Fans from the two teams have a history of animosity. The Port Said riot led to the cancellation of the football league and sparked days of clashes in Cairo between police and protesters accusing the interior ministry, which is in charge of police, of doing nothing to protect Al-Ahly fans. The Egyptian football federation has yet to punish Al-Masry for the riot. Over at AEI’s website, Jim Pethokouis responds to my criticism of his dismissal of the Obama corporate tax reform plan. His core argument is this:
Anyway, I don’t get a sense from the White House that this is a starting point for some sort of negotiation to achieve real reform since the economic case for the stuff Josh wants is so strong. It just shows me that the White House is more interested in checking a box than passing reform in an election year.
I honestly find this to be circular. If you take somebody disagreeing with you on important policy matters as a sign of arguing in bad faith, then obviously you’re going to conclude you shouldn’t bother negotiating. I think the truth is that the White House has a variety of interests. They want to reform the corporate tax code. They also want to score political points. Refusing to engage them on the former is a great way to ensure that the latter is the only thing that gets done. null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- Global warming is a litmus test for US Republicans | Raymond S. Bradley
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney crossed a dangerous party line when he stated his belief in anthropogenic climate changeMitt Romney, arguably the leading Republican candidate for president of the United States in the 2012 election, recently significantly diminished his prospects for obtaining the support he needs from the right wing of his party. How did he do this? He simply declared that he believes the Earth is warming, and that human activities are responsible. To most scientists, such a statement would be considered fairly innocuous, and an accurate assessment of current understanding. But to a large fraction of the US Republican party, this is a completely unacceptable position - ranking alongside gay marriage, gun control and abortion rights. Anthropogenic climate change has become a litmus test for Republicans in the United States. If you want to appeal to the hard core of the party - those whom you need in order to obtain the party's nomination - you simply can not acknowledge what almost every national science academy and scientific organisation has accepted for many years. In fact, many other prominent Republicans, sensing the winds of retribution, have already back-tracked on whatever previous statements they might have made, if they contained even a whiff of climate reality. Given the importance of getting the United States on board to obtain a comprehensive international agreement on controlling greenhouse gases, this dismissal of scientific evidence about global warming is both sad and alarming.Climate scientists on the frontlines of this battle have suffered badly from the poisonous political atmosphere. Rightwing blogs and talk radio demagogues have promoted the idea that climate science is a worthless charade, where data are simpl _NULL_

Robert Champion's death sparks criminal investigation and inquiry into whether FAMU has ignored warnings about hazingFlorida A&M University says it is dismissing four students for their role in the death of a marching band member.Robert Champion was found on 19 November on a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel after the school's football team lost to a rival. His death has sparked a criminal investigation, as well as a probe into whether the university has ignored past warnings about hazing.FAMU president James Ammons acknowledged the dismissal of the students in a memo he sent earlier this week to members of the board of trustees.Ammons did not specify what the four students did but said that their dismissals were connected to Champion's death. He also told trustees that a group of students protested his decision to shutter the Marching 100 while the investigation continues.Police are investigating another possible case of hazing involving the band. The Tallahassee Police Department has opened an investigation into the alleged battery of 18-year-old Bria Shante Hunter.Hunter's parents told Atlanta's WXIA-TV on Tuesday that the freshman clarinet player suffered a fractured thigh bone and damaged knee. They say when she returned to Georgia she couldn't bend her legs.A police report states the alleged battery started on 15 September and continued through 7 November, but it does not say how it may have occurred.Hunter's father told the Associated Press he could not immediately comment.FloridaUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Shale Gas Sparks A U.S. Chemicals Renaissance
Shale gas has transformed the U.S. energy market in the last four years, unleashing a huge supply of cheap, relatively clean fuel on the North American market at precisely the time many people thought we'd be importing liquified natural gas from overseas. The new supply has disrupted the renewable-energy market and provided a comforting ceiling to electricity prices. But a less-noticed beneficiary has been the U.S. chemicals industry. Singer is rewarded for backing Macky Sall after being disqualified from running for presidency himselfYoussou N'Dour, the singer disqualified from running for Senegal's presidency, has been appointed to the country's cabinet by the winner of the election.Senegal's newly elected president, Macky Sall, has made N'Dour the culture and tourism minister, according to state television.N'Dour and former banker Amadou Kane, who was given the finance ministry, are among a host of newcomers to the cabinet, which Sall has trimmed down to 25 posts, from around 40 under his predecessor, Abdoulaye Wade. The new government comes three days after Sall, a former prime minister under Wade, was sworn in and 24 hours after he named Abdoul Mbaye, a former banker without party affiliation, as prime minister. Grammy award-winning N'Dour put his singing career on hold to try to challenge Wade in the election earlier this year, but Senegal's legal body blocked him from standing. N'Dour backed Wade's rivals. Kane previously headed up BICIS, the Senegalese arm of BNP Paribas. Alioune Badara Cisse, a close ally of Sall, is the new foreign minister, state television reported. Parties allied to Moustapha Niasse and Idrissa Seck, who also were former prime ministers under Wade but threw their weight behind Sall, have also been given several posts. Sall, 50, ran for a seven-year mandate but has pledged to reduce the presidential term to five years and to stick to an existing two-term limit.SenegalYoussou N'DourAfricaguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - How will Barcelona's supporters get to Wembley? | Jamie Jackson
The Barcelona players will beat the ash cloud by flying to London tonight. Here's five ways the fans can get to the Champions League final1. Private jetAs with most clubs in European competition Barcelona fly by chartered plane to their away games, when required. They were scheduled to take one to London on Thursday ahead of Saturday's final at Wembley. But the Catalans are now leaving earlier to ensure they preempt the ash cloud forcing them into taking an alternative and far longer method of travel. Can the fans afford such an option?Rating: Pricey2. FerryIf fans take this option they need to start packing their scarves as they will have to fly to the port at Santander almost immediately to ensure the ash cloud does not force them into the 443 mile drive to the ferry. And once on the ship, it is a 24-hour trip to Portsmouth before a further 2 hour drive into London.Rating: Unlikely3. Sleeper to Paris then EurostarThe seven hours and 41 minutes that would take supporters of the world's finest club side to reach Paris could be taken overnight, or on an early morning start when some last minute Xbox and Playstation action could be crammed in. On arrival in the French capital, Guardiola's army can refuel with a quick croissant and coffee before boarding the Eurostar at Paris Nord. Two hours and 25 minutes later they would emerge at St Pancras station in central London and head for their hotel.Rating: Likely if they cannot fly4. CoachThe 706 mile drive to London from Barcelona would take at least two and a-half days, with the danger of cabin fever making this particularly unattractive.Rating: Last resort5. - David Cameron's trip to the Kremlin must address the Sergei Magnitsky case | Denis MacShane
The Russian lawyer, employed by a British citizen, died in jail. The prime minister must join Washington in annnouncing a travel ban on those involvedIn diplomacy there is an unofficial statute of limitations on rows that poison state-to-state relations. November will see the fifth anniversary of the murder of Alexander Litvinenko by Russian agents in London. David Cameron will certainly raise the case when he goes to Moscow for his first trip to the Kremlin but equally certainly will have to swallow the Russian dismissal of the crime. But he will find it less easy to swerve around the case of Sergei Magnitsky, the lawyer employed by a British citizen and his London-based investment company. Magnitsky exposed the biggest tax swindle in Russian history, and was put to death by Russian officials for his pains. The Magnitsky case is poised to return to Parliament as a private members' bill will push for 60 named Russian officials to be put on a visa ban by Britain with any assets they have in Britain frozen. In the United States, Washington has already imposed a similar travel ban on named Russians who took part in the process that led to Magnitsky being arrested, flung in prison and so harshly treated that he died in the manner that Solzhenitsyn described in his novels on the communist Gulag.Magnitsky was employed by the American-born Bill Browder, now a British citizen. His grandfather, Earl Browder, was leader of the US Communist Party in wartime years until he was fired by Stalin for failing to toe the Kremlin line. After getting his Stanford MBA, the grandson went to Russia in 1990 and developed one of the most successful investment funds operating in the country. But making money in Russia requires political approval and Browder refused to enter the world of corruption _NULL_

- Greece and the euro: the crisis continues | Editorial
The cuts strategy is not working in Greece: not economically, not socially and certainly not politicallyWhat's Greek for constructive dismissal? Because that's an apt term to describe how Greece is being treated by the other members of the eurozone. Consider: party leaders in Athens have spent days agonising over how to make €3bn (£2.5bn) of extra spending cuts (or over 1% of Greek GDP), apparently essential to qualify for the next round of loans from the EU and the IMF (these are relatively high interest loans, not a free bailout). After drawing up a list of painful reductions, including a 20% cut to the minimum wage and public sector job losses, the Greeks were told this week to go away and find another €300m. Or consider the insistence by Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker that Greece's politicians must turn these cuts into law, without allowing the public a vote. This is reminiscent of the disclosure last month that Germany wanted to install a European commissar in Athens to oversee Greece's budget-setting process. And here's the clincher: consider the number of briefings in Berlin suggesting that were Greece to leave the euro it would not be such a calamity.Official or unofficial, on the record or off, the message from all these communications is much the same: Greece does not deserve the full suite of democratic policymaking; nor does it merit the kind of consideration that would be given to any heavyweight economy. At one level, of course, this is simply what happens to bankrupt countries. Countless Asian and Latin American nations have undergone the same torture at the hands of the IMF. The big difference here is that this is happening in Europe, within a single-currency club that was meant to protect its members from such indignity. - Morocco's second spring | Issandr El Amrani
Morocco's king was hailed for deftly avoiding revolution. But as other Arab regimes found, promises of reform only go so farThere are cautionary tales in the Arab uprisings, as Syria has shown: not every revolution can be as successful as Tunisia's, not every aftermath is rosy. And then there are also questions raised about those places where revolution did not take place. Was it averted because there is wise and popular government, or has some kind of social shock merely been postponed?Last year Morocco seemed for a while to be following the path of its eastern neighbours. Protests were proliferating, with public participation unseen since the 1970s. King Mohammed VI, whose legitimacy was never targeted by the protests – even if that of his regime was – deftly retook the initiative by proposing, and hurriedly passing, a new constitution. Elections that followed led, for the first time, to victory for the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD by its French acronym), which is now in office. Surely, some observers marvelled, here was a model to follow for countries faced with demands for change, one that offered fewer dangers than revolution? Many Moroccans were divided on this issue. Libya's civil war and, later, Syria's, frightened many into believing that escalation would be too costly for a country that has neither petroleum riches nor great strategic assets. They knew from experience that the makhzen – the political-economic-security nexus that rules the country behind the scenes – would not yield power easily, and is capable of great repression. It was probably why many hoped that promises of reform were genuine, and were willing to give a new government and chastened makhzen the benefit of the doubt. If the Afghan president allows the measures expressed in the statement to be enacted – despite the fact that they violate the Afghan constitution – he will endanger the lives of millions of women, depriving them of basic rights and access to healthcare, education or jobs. This may also have repercussions on ethnic divisions, as there is a danger that militias will restart a civil war to defend themselves against Taliban rule. British mining group told to stop work on aluminium plant two months after being denied permission to drill on sacred landIndia's environment ministry today ordered Vedanta Resources, the London-based mining company, to halt all construction work aimed at expanding its aluminium refinery in the state of Orissa in the east of the country. It comes two months after the ministry denied Vedanta permission to mine bauxite in Orissa's Niyamgiri Hills, an area deemed sacred to an indigenous tribe.Campaigners have accused Vedanta of human rights violations in the region, but the company has denied the allegations.Last month, Jairam Ramesh, India's environment minister, threatened to cancel approval for expansion of Vedanta's Lanjigarh aluminium refinery that would have used bauxite from the nearby Niyamgiri Hills, had the project been approved.Today, Ramesh said Vedanta had started work to expand the refinery's capacity to 6m tonnes a year without obtaining the required environmental clearances. The ministry asked the Orissa government to take legal action against Vedanta. The company was unavailable for comment.Vedanta is among several multinationals, including South Korea's Posco, whose Indian projects face delays as a proactive environment ministry tightens rules that often bring it into conflict with other government ministries pushing for rapid industrialisation.Vedanta ResourcesMiningIndiaRichard Wachmanguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- This year let's celebrate … the Saudi women's driving campaign | Eman Al Nafjan
International Women's Day: The campaign got women's rights moving, from political participation to jobs in lingerie shopsI don't believe gender differences are so strongly felt anywhere in the world as in Saudi Arabia. Even strolling down the street, the great majority of men are in white ankle-length shirt dresses while women are, by law, required to wear a black abaya and head scarf wherever they go in public. And gender differences in rights and obligations are just as black and white as the dress code. Women are banned from driving their own cars; they are not allowed to run their own businesses; they are not allowed inside main government buildings; and they cannot travel abroad, no matter what their age, without official permission from their guardians, which has to be authorised by the government. As bleak as it may seem, since last year's International Women's Day there have been numerous breakthroughs. The women's driving campaign gained international recognition and the women involved were not as severely punished, as those who drove in the 1990 campaign. Then, 47 women were suspended from their jobs for two years, some had their homes ransacked. This year, Manal al-Sharif served 10 days in prison and Shaima Jastaniah was sentenced to 10 lashes across the back. The only woman to lose her job for driving was Madeeha al-Ajroush, who, ironically, worked for a charity whose mission is women's empowerment. The rest of the women got off with pledges and warnings. Quite a few respected religious scholars, such as Shiekh Eissa al-Ghaith, also came out in support of lifting the ban.In September there was more good news with a royal decree that women would be included in the all-appointed advisory council (shura) and allowed full participation in municipal elections, whe null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Is Arab cinema on the cusp of a potential renaissance?
Increased exposure and support for the Arab film industry offers hope for the future despite a wider backdrop of political upheavalThe Arab spring has focused western attention on the Arab world in an unprecedented way. While events in Bahrain, Libya and Syria have turned progressively more violent, there was a period last year when Arab youth inspired onlookers with their courage and thoroughly modern attitudes. However, for a region of more than 300 million people, and with a rich tradition of folklore and storytelling, the Arab world has been historically underserved by its cinema. Egypt can boast of a proud film-making industry that dates back more than a century but, beyond that, the picture has often been less encouraging. When I began my career as a film producer in Tunisia in the 1970s, there was nothing remotely resembling an Arab film industry. Potential financiers, particularly those in the petro-dollar fuelled economies of the Gulf, were more focused on infrastructure and defence investments than culture. The region was also woefully lacking in cinemas and, while the Arab world was officially bound by the same language, in reality the 22 countries all had dialects and local customs that frequently remained specific to their own borders. The result was the absence of a genuine pan-Arab market for Arab cinema, with only a handful of film-makers, such as Egypt's Youssef Chahine, receiving international recognition.Consequently, my focus at the time was to attract international productions to my country. I brought to Tunisia George Lucas and Star Wars, Steven Spielberg and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and – memorably – the Monty Python team, with The Life of Brian. I would always insist that Tunisians be a part of the crew so that, in time, the trainees of today woul null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- Fox News boss persuaded fellow executive to 'lie' to federal investigators
Roger Ailes wanted Judith Regan to keep quiet about affair with man shortlisted to head US homeland security departmentThe chairman of the right-wing current affairs channel, Fox News, Roger Ailes, has been named in court documents as the previously anonymous executive who allegedly tried to persuade a fellow boss at News Corporation to lie to federal investigators over a crucial Washington appointment. The New York Times reported court documents had become available that for the first time name Ailes as the mysterious executive involved in the allegations. The claims were initially made in November 2007 by Judith Regan, one of Rupert Murdoch's rising stars in News Corporation until she was dismissed the previous year in a row over her decision to publish a book with OJ Simpson. In her unfair dismissal claim against her former employers, Regan claimed that a News Corporation senior executive had tried to secure her silence during the process to vet Bernard Kerik as the US head of homeland security. Regan had been having an affair with Kerik, and she alleged in her lawsuit that the unnamed executive had wanted her to keep quiet about it during the vetting procedure in order to protect Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who had appointed Kerik as New York police commissioner and was Kerik's main supporter. Giuliani was at the time considering a run for the White House in 2008 and the revelations could have rubbed off adversely on him.The identity of the executive has long been a topic of speculation in New York media circles. Now, according to the New York Times, the mystery is solved as Ailes is named in a separate court case in 2008.The court documents reveal his identity and, even more sensationally, say that there is a tape recording of Ailes's conversation with R
- 1919: Lenin agrees to Guardian interview
Russia has no laws against propaganda by British people. England has such laws; therefore Russia is the more liberal-minded, says Vladimir LeninA transcript of the interview: The interview with Lenin had been a matter of some difficulty to arrange; not because he is unapproachable - he goes about with as little external trappings or precautions as myself - but because his time is so precious. He, even more than the other Commissaries, is continuously at work. But at last I had secured a free moment and drove from my room, across the city, to one of the gates of the Kremlin.I had taken the precaution at the beginning of my stay to secure a pass that set me free from any possible molestation from officials or police, and this gave me admission to the Kremlin enclosure.Entrance to the Kremlin is naturally guarded; it is the seat of the Executive Government; but the formalities are no more than have to be observed at Buckingham Palace or the House of Commons. A small wooden office beyond the bridge, where a civilian grants passes, and a few soldiers, ordinary Russian soldiers, one of whom receives and verifies the pass, were all there was to be seen at this entrance. It is always being said that Lenin is guarded by Chinese. There were no Chinese here. I entered, mounted the hill, and drove across to the building where Lenin lives, in the direction of the large platform where formerly stood the Alexander statue, now removed. At the foot of the staircase were two more soldiers, Russian youths, but still no Chinese. I went up by a lift to the top floor, where I found two other young Russian soldiers, but no Chinese, nor in any of the three visits which I paid to the Kremlin did I see any.I hung up my hat and coat in the ante-chamber, passed through a room, in which clerks were ロシアはイギリス人によるプロパガンダに反対する法律があります

- Assad's speech offers Syria only confusion | Issandr El Amrani
This was the speech of a technocrat, not a leader or politician. Syria's leader appeared rambling, perhaps even weakBashar al-Assad just delivered his third public address since the uprising began in Syria. The previous speeches were cocky and confident, arrogant even. In this one he seemed uncomfortable and nervous, gone was the joking and swagger of a month ago. He even appeared to have lost some weight.Assad offered a bunch of technocratic reforms: a new electoral law, a commitment to root out corruption, media reform, reform of municipal government, and the launch of a national dialogue for reform that will include 100 personalities. It was a technocrat's speech, not a leader or politician's speech, and he appeared rambling and perhaps even weak. Its contents were vague, and simply did not address the very serious crisis between the Syrian people and their state. It's hard to interpret what this all means, because it was difficult to understand what Assad was pitching. He just didn't sell it, and we don't know who is supposed to big part of this national dialogue (although I've heard that longtime dissident Michel Kilo might be a part of it). But it still feels too half-hearted, there was no grand gesture such as calling back security forces or addressing the refugee situation in Turkey (for instance by offering an amnesty and guarantees that they will be unharmed if they return and that the incidents that led to their flight will be investigated). It's very hard to judge from the outside where Syria is headed. This speech further muddles the picture, with Assad making a half-hearted conciliatory gesture that simply does not convince.Bashar Al-AssadSyriaMiddle EastArab and Middle East unrestIssandr El Amraniguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Us _NULL_

- Letters: Community way with languages
On Monday students all over Europe will be celebrating the European Day of Languages. However, while pupils in other European countries learn two new languages in school, we have less to celebrate. Language learning in the UK is in serious decline (Editorial, 13 September). While we find it difficult to motivate pupils to study French and German, young people in east London are campaigning to make qualifications available in a wider range of languages. They speak community languages such as Somali or Albanian, as well as English, and are keen to study these and use them in their future careers. Many are already learning at complementary schools – Saturday schools or mother-tongue schools. Four recent studies funded by the Economic and Social Research Council show how complementary school pupils gain the cognitive, linguistic and social advantages of bilingualism. As academics involved in complementary schooling, we urge the government to engage in constructive dialogue with young people and their communities and make qualifications available in a wider range of languages. This would be an important step towards a coherent policy on multilingualism. The UK's unique language resources could then benefit the country's economy, particularly in global trade. On the European Day of Languages, we need to celebrate the linguistic talent of all our citizens.Dr Raymonde Sneddon University of East LondonDr Charmian Kenner Goldsmiths, University of LondonProf David Block Institute of Education, University of LondonProf Li Wei Birkbeck College, University of London Prof Zhu Hua Birkbeck College, University of LondonProf Viv Edwards University of ReadingProf Ben Rampton King's College LondonDr Salman Al-Azami Liverpool Hope UniversityDr Tozun Issa London Metropolitan UniversityDr Vall _NULL_

- A strong Islamist showing in Egypt's election need not be cause for panic | Issandr El Amrani
It is depressing Islamists have garnered such support, but all is not lost if the Muslim Brotherhood is serious about democracyThe results from the first round of Egypt's parliamentary elections paint a fairly clear picture: Islamists will be a majority in the next parliament, led by the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party (FJP), and Salafists have exceeded expectations to be, perhaps, the second party in Egypt. This news has profoundly depressed most educated, middle-class Cairenes I know who had hoped that the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak would be followed by a relatively liberal democracy that would be inclusive of moderate Islamists. It is particularly distressing to non-Muslims, who will now fear the Islamisation of public life that has taken place in the last two decades will be accelerated, with full backing from parliament and government leaders in the next few years. That the Muslim Brothers would perform well was expected: after all their electoral machine is excellent, they have experience and a clear message, and are a known quantity. Six months ago, when they promised to only run for a limited number of seats, it was assumed that they would be about 30% of parliament. They may very well pass the 50% mark, having decided to contest a lot more seats than initially expected. They have done so without a broad alliance with other parties, since the Democratic Alliance they belong to is at least 80% FJP.The success of the Salafists is more of a surprise, and must reflect their grassroots presence in Egyptian society. But it is deeply worrisome, because the Salafists have made clear in their statements that they are an illiberal party with extreme views on many topics, whatever their charitable works are. In my opinion they should have never been legalised, null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- Red State – review
The maverick moviemaker Kevin Smith has on several occasions satirised the Catholic Church into which he was born, the best known instance being Dogma. Here he takes an angry, slapdash look at Protestant fundamentalism in a movie partly inspired by the 1993 siege of the charismatic David Koresh's Branch Davidians cult by federal agents that led to the deaths of 76 people including children and pregnant women. Smith plays it for laughs, as three randy teenagers are lured to the rural retreat of the Five Points Church by a blowsy middle-aged follower (Melissa Leo) of a mad preacher (Michael Parks). This Koresh-like leader delivers a dead serious 15-minute sermon before ordering his devotees to murder a succession of gays and other offenders, following which a dim federal agent (John Goodman) blunders in and sparks off a massacre. It becomes crude, equal-opportunity comedy when Goodman gets away with it, and post-9/11 legislation allows the Feds to lock up members of the church in perpetuity as terrorists.ComedyKevin SmithMelissa LeoChristianityReligionPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - China: Urumqi goes with the flow of walled river
A bid to escape downtown riots provides quiet moments of reflection beside a once destructive riverI discovered the Urumqi river quite by accident fleeing the riots two years ago. I headed for the hills only to bump into the concrete snake weaving its way through an outer suburb, a haven from the terrors of downtown Urumqi. The river is a shadow of its former self. Its once ferocious path has become an equally ferocious eight-lane stream of traffic dodging chaotically beneath the 10 or so bridges built to replace the rickety wooden versions that were vulnerable to melting glaciers and flash floods; the water is now encased in a five-metre-wide concrete shell. Two giant hilltop pagodas built astride its banks 100 years ago to appease the river gods are all that remain of those heady days of destruction. Today another form of destruction is underway as Chinese bulldozers trap the full force of its might upriver in a series of dams, drainage ditches and reservoirs, leaving an ornamental trickle to wend its way through the city.It had all but disappeared from Urumqi life until a renaissance four years ago. Dragon boats made to herald the comeback lie rotting in the undergrowth, but the creek itself takes on a life of its own during the five short months of summer, when glacial streams are allowed a measure of freedom to run through the city they once ruled with unpredictability and fear.Barely 45-cm deep, the river attracts to its shores as much a variety of human life as it once attracted wildlife. Brain-improving backwards strollers mingle with thigh-slapping miniature-dog walkers, dodging the rows of retiree fishermen who sit outside all day with friends to hook an occasional minnow. - Indonesia's reminder of the north of England's fiery past
Climbing Mount Lokon - and mulling over the days when Cumbria had a Lava District, with a legacy which may yet supply us with hot waterOne thing that the north of England lacks is a good volcano, although Newcastle University's scientists may create one if they drill too deeply for their geothermal water under the city centre. We've also got some excellent reminders of igneous, ash-cloud days in the heart of the Lake District where you can still pick up scraps of rock burnt red or ochre, and rare minerals such as diatomite and graphite have made fortunes for enterprising prospectors. These musings are prompted by Gunung (Mount) Lokon blowing its top a quarter of a century after I nearly fell into its crater, along with assorted other Northerners including an officer from RAF Newton-on-Ouse. We were on a scientific expedition to Northern Sulawesi (formerly the Celebes spice islands) and decided that Lokon was too good a target not to climb.Foolishly, we ignored the valuable motto 'Time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted', thus proving it true as what appeared from a distance to be springy, Blencathra-like turf turned out to be elephant grass. This has sabre-shaped leaves with edges so sharp that they cut you like a scalpel; you feel nothing until blood starts dripping from your arms and legs.Lokon's nastiest trick, however, is hiding its crater in a cloud of sulphurous steam between two cones from which scree runs lead enticingly downhill after the stiff and bloody ascent. Discarded bottles of Bintang (Star) beer on the highest summit lull trippers into a state of complacency. It's a picnic spot for local hoodies; no need to take special care.Oh yes there is. - Andres Serrano's Piss Christ is the original shock art
Christian protesters who attacked the work have risen to the artist's bait and misunderstood his sincerityBefore sharks swam in formaldehyde, there was Piss Christ. With this work in 1987, Andres Serrano created what is surely the visual manifesto and original prototype of the use of shock in contemporary art.Other 1980s artists, including Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Serra, ran into controversy, but Piss Christ is distinguished by its calculated offence and rhetorical nature – the way it sets out to be unmissably outrageous and adopts that offence as part of its meaning.I mean, it's called Piss Christ and is said to be made using the artist's own urine. It is far more polemical than, say, a Mapplethorpe photograph of sadomasochist rites where the artist portrays what he found beautiful and causes offence almost accidentally. As such, Piss Christ is one of the most influential works of art of the past 30 years, the model for a strategy that has transformed the public impact of art.Yet the joke on the latest protesters to take Serrano's bait – hey look, Christians, I've urinated on the son of God! – is that Piss Christ works well as a modern work of religious art. I don't know if the curators of the Vatican museum have considered buying a print, but it possesses a richly traditional dimension. The passion of Christ has always been associated with bodily fluids – it is true that artists traditionally stressed blood rather than urine, but they scarcely stinted on the revulsion of Christ's fleshly death.Piss Christ can be legitimately compared to the horrible sores and green pus on the body of Grunewald's Christ in the Isenheim altarpiece, or painted wooden statues in baroque churches with their lifelike gore and jewelled tears, or Caravaggio's Saint Thomas sticking his 仕事を攻撃、キリスト教のデモ隊がアーティストの餌に上昇している、ホルムアルデヒドの彼のsincerityBeforeのサメの泳ぎを誤解して、尿キリストがあった
- Why Entrepreneurial Leadership is Making a Comeback
Is it just me or are we in the midst of a renaissance of the Entrepreneurial CEO? Obvious mentions include Mark Zuckerberg who’s been driving Facebook as CEO and president since the start of the company in 2004. At Google, Larry Page is taking back the reigns from Eric Schmidt, which means the original Founder-CEO – after an interim phase of ten years – is displacing a “Professional CEO” to recharge the company and innovate at Silicon Valley speed again. At 67 years young, Dietrich Mateschitz from Austria is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time. He disrupted the beverage industry by creating a completely new category – the energy drink. His privately held company Red Bull generated an astounding $5.1 billion in 2010 by selling 4.2 billion cans worldwide and more than one billion in the U.S. alone. Red Bull employed just 7,758 employees in 2010, which equals $667,000 in revenue per person. それはちょうど私、または起業家CEOの復興の真っ只中に私たちですか?明らかに、2004年に会社の開始以来、CEO兼社長としてFacebookを利用して運転され。。u200b。。u200bているのMark Zuckerbergが含まれて言及している
- EU maternity laws risk a backward step | Mary Honeyball
Despite their benefits, proposals to provide 20 weeks' maternity leave on full pay could hit the UK's least well offWomen are entitled to be supported for the time they need while having a child. Those first months with a baby are undoubtedly precious – yet maternity leave differs enormously across Europe. Last year I wrote on this very subject for Cif and said that much of the UK's maternity provision was poor. However, I am concerned that the legislation MEPs will vote on on Wednesday, which seeks to increase minimum maternity leave across Europe from 14 weeks to 20 weeks, will leave many women in Britain – especially low-paid women on the minimum wage – worse off financially. The maths are simple: for a woman on the minimum wage of £5.93, working for 40 hours a week, weekly pay would be £237.20 per week. If she took the full entitlement for maternity leave, she would receive £213.48 per week for the first six weeks (90% of full pay – £1,280.88) and £124.88 per week for the next 33 weeks (standard rate, regardless of earnings), which amounts to £4,121.04. She would also have the option of 13 further weeks' maternity leave (unpaid). This is a total of £5,401.92.However, under the proposals being voted on in the European parliament, which seek to provide 20 weeks maternity leave on full pay, a woman with the same working conditions would receive £237.20 per week for the first 20 weeks, a total of £4,744. This would be around £650 less than under the current system. Of course, part-time workers would stand to lose more. However, there are other elements of the report that I favour, such as additional provision for parents of children with disabilities, as well as premature and multiple births, and strengthening women's legal protection against dismissal and working time ar その利点にもかかわらず、提案は、英国の少なくとも井戸offWomenは、子を持ちながら、彼らは必要な時間をサポートする権利が襲うことができて有給で20週間の産休を提供しています

- Iran, Israel and Arabs trade barbs at EU nuclear meeting
Senior officials stuck to their talking points at a Brussels seminar but at least they stayed in the same roomAs advertised, senior Iranian, Israeli and Arab representatives gathered in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday last week to discuss the prospect of a WMD-free zone in the Middle East. The Iranian delegation was led by Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, while the Israeli contingent was led by Jeremy Issacharoff, an ambassador and a deputy director-general for strategic affairs at the foreign ministry. Virtually the entire Arab world was represented at a similar level at the EU-brokered meeting, with the only significant exceptions of Libya and Yemen, who have pressing problems back home. The good news is that the everyone managed to stay in the same (rather large) room for the duration of the off-the-record discussion. The bad news, according to participants, is that the large number of speakers meant that few speakers had time to go beyond the obligatory finger-wagging directed at their opposite numbers. One delegate said: There wasn't much of substance. Usually there is time to get the venting out of the way and move on to more interesting issues, but this was so large that there was really just time for set pieces...All the same it was a good effort by the EU. If it had been done earlier it might have been more helpful. The other big disappointment was that Gary Samore, President Obama's advisor on nuclear disarmament and proliferation, did not show up to make his scheduled keynote speech. He pleaded commitments back in Washington, but it was hardly the show of support from Washington that the idea of a WMD-free zone needs if it is to survive. - Sundance adds Britons to star-studded lineup
Kevin Macdonald and David Mackenzie join Paddy Considine and Vera Farmiga as directors featuring at Sundance film festivalKevin Macdonald and David Mackenzie are among British directors with films added today to an increasingly starry Sundance lineup. Yesterday the premieres of new movies directed by Paddy Considine and Vera Farmiga were announced to be screening at Park City, Utah in January. Today 54 titles were added, completing the programme.Macdonald's feature, Life in a Day, is a global experiment to create the world's largest user-generated feature film, culled from footage shot on July 24, while Mackenzie's is a love story about two people – played by Ewan McGregor, who Mackenzie collaborated with on Young Adam, and Eva Green – who fall in love as the world falls apart.Other highlights from today's additions include Red State, Kevin Smith's horror film about a group of misfits, including Melissa Leo and John Goodman, battling fundamentalism in middle America and Salvation Boulevard, about a charming evangelist preacher (played by Pierce Brosnan) who frames an ex-hippie for a crime. The Station Agent director, Tom McCarthy, also has a new film showing: Win Win, with Paul Giamatti as a beleaguered lawyer who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach and stumbles upon a talented athlete, while Lee Tamahori's horror The Devil's Double features Dominic Cooper and Ludivine Sagnier.Strong additions in the documentary sidebar include portraits of Chastity Bono, Bobby Fischer and Ronald Reagan, while Morgan Spurlock's latest, about branding and product placement, also gets a spot. The closing night film will be The Son of No One, about a young cop, Channing Tatum, who must relive a murder he committed as a young man. - Roy Macdonald Stock obituary
My husband, Roy Macdonald Stock, who has died aged 96, was a Bristolian whose pacifist parents named him after the Labour leader Ramsay MacDonald. Mac, as his friends called him, was the youngest of six children and, thanks to a scholarship to Queen Elizabeth's hospital school in Bristol, not just the first of his family to proceed to university but also the first to benefit from a full secondary school education. After graduating with first-class honours in French from Bristol University in 1935, Mac taught French at Cardigan grammar school until he was called up for second world war service. He served first in intelligence in Northern Ireland. Training at Sandhurst and an appointment as a signals officer in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry followed. His battalion landed in France three days after D-day. Neither Mac nor any of the other men had ever been in combat and in no time at all disaster struck: tank shell-fire hit their commanding officer, killing him instantly. The novices were unable to get their artillery going. To their horror, there were first one, then two and finally three German tanks advancing down the lane towards them.Suddenly, the first tank stopped and a German officer appeared, waving a white piece of cloth. Mac's battalion arrested the officers and their crews. The Germans, it turned out, had orders to retreat rather than attack but were foiled by the collapse of their rear tank into a ditch. For Mac this story typified the tragedy and farce of warfare.Towards the end of the war, thanks to his fluency in French, Mac was assigned a reconnaissance job. Dressed as a peasant and accompanied by a real one, he was pretending to be on a rabbit hunt when he spotted a fully armed German sergeant major. Nasa releases photograph of Opportunity robot at work on MarsNasa's Opportunity rover is little more than a bluish speck on the rim of the Santa Maria crater on the surface of Mars in an image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high resolution camera.Opportunity has confounded all expectations by continuing to operate years after its primary mission was over. The rover was dispatched to Mars in 2003, with a twin called Spirit that fell silent in March last year after getting a wheel stuck in the soil.A photograph was taken by the orbiter on 1 March from an altitude of more than 155 miles (250km) as Opportunity extended its robot arm to take close-ups of a rock called Ruiz Garcia. Tracks left by the rover as it approached are visible to the west of the crater. It has been gathering information about the geology of the relatively fresh, 90m-wide crater that will help explain how it formed and how erosion and the Martian weather have shaped it since. The bright orange streaks are material kicked up by the impact. The rover will soon leave the edge of Santa Maria and trek for 3.7 miles (6km) to a larger crater called Endeavour, where the Martian soil contains hydrated sulphates and phyllosilicates that formed in a wetter past.MarsSpaceNasaIan Sampleguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- From the archive, 18 May 1943: R.A.F. breach giant German dams
Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 18 May 1943Heavy blows of a new kind were delivered against Germany's war industry early yesterday, when a force of Lancaster bombers breached the enemy's three greatest dams at the Möhne, Eder, and Sorte reservoirs, which together control more than two-thirds of the water storage capacity of the Ruhr.Aerial reconnaissance shows that the Möhne Dam has been breached over a length of 100 yards, that water is pouring down the Ruhr valley, that railway and road bridges have broken down, and that hydro-electrical power stations have been destroyed or damaged. The Eder, which controls the head waters of the Weser and Fulda valleys and operates several power stations, is also breached. Photographs show the river below in full flood. Floods are also rising in the Dortmund area, 30 miles away.Picked Lancaster crews had been chosen for the operation and had been training for it for many weeks. They worked in complete secrecy on a bomber station which, as far as possible, was cut off from contact with the outside world. Only about half a dozen other men in the whole of Bomber Command knew what they were doing. In the early hours of yesterday, when the weather and light were exactly right, they carried out the operation. - Jessica Valenti | Top 100 Women
Pioneering blogger whose online activism dragged feminism into the 21st centuryIf feminism is enjoying a revival among young women, much of the credit should go to women such as Jessica Valenti, 33. The creator of Feministing.com, a site set up for younger feminists who felt their voices were ignored, helped spark an explosion of blogs and online communities that effectively shifted the movement online. At a time when the death of feminism was being announced, they launched discussions, voices, support and campaigns around the world. Valenti, the author of three books on feminism, felt the full force of being a pioneer – with online abuse, rape and death threats, dismissal by older feminists and a torrent of insults over her appearance in a photograph with Bill Clinton exposing the downside of online feminism.Yet the momentum created by bloggers has spilled over into activist groups, workshops and campaigns – and helped create a new heyday for feminism.WomenBloggingFeminismNewspapers & magazinesDigital mediaHoma Khaleeliguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Artist of the week 136: Vera Lutter
Ghostly forms float around Vera Lutter's pinhole-camera shots, mixing modern imagery with antique photographic technologyWill-o'-the-wisps seem to dart around New York-based artist Vera Lutter's uncanny photographs of cityscapes and ancient sites. In her latest black and white series, Egypt, contours of pyramids jut from the paper like wall reliefs. You could almost touch the empty deserts they rise from, dotted with pebbles or rumpled with sand dunes. And the photos fade to white at the edges, so the tombs and sphinxes resemble sculptures stranded on plinths. One of the reasons Lutter's images feel tangible and yet weird is that they're realised in negative, so that light forms auras where shadows should be cast and the sky is always black. But it's also the way she makes them, using one of photography's simplest and oldest devices – the pinhole camera. This is time-consuming business, requiring long exposures so that the film not only records the outlines of buildings but the ghost-like forms that move in and out of the frame as the clock ticks on. They can be crafted from anything: Lutter has used an old trunk for some of her work, but she's regularly worked with room-sized boxes to create huge, one-off images. In addition to Egypt, Lutter has photographed the Renaissance architecture of Venice and London's St Paul's. But many of her best-known works use antique techniques to capture fast-changing urban landscapes, including glass-fronted buildings and buzzing highways. For Frankfurt Airport VII: April 24, 2001, she placed a huge pinhole camera next to an aircraft stand and let the image take shape. The planes that parked there appear as overlain traces of each other, so that they seem to judder on the page. While Lutter's photographs appear to pay homage to mankind's a

The Gallic game of seduction, terrible TV and three-course lunches for the workersHistoryCharlemagne, hundred years war, ancien régime, renaissance, Reformation, the Sun King. A revolution that changed the history not just of France, but the world. A republic (briefly) until Napoleon Bonaparte made it an empire; wars all over the shop. Another republic, a second empire, a third republic, devastation in the first world war, occupation in the second. Charles de Gaulle, the Fifth Republic, bye bye Algeria, a leader among European nations. Cheese-eating surrender monkeys. What more is there to say?GeographyMetropolitan France (excluding the overseas territories, or Dom-Toms) occupies more than 200,000 square miles, more than twice the size of the UK. From the damp plains of the Nord-Pas de Calais to the sun-baked beaches of the Med, the snowy peaks of the Alps to the verdant valleys of the Dordogne, the barren fastnesses of the Massif Central to the lush, cream-marinated meadows of Normandy and the urban delights of Paris, Toulouse and the rest, France just about has it all. This explains why it remains the most visited country in the world, and why the French are so infuriatingly proud of it.GovernmentA republic with a hybrid presidential-parliamentary governing system. - Joyce Wainwright obituary
Joyce Wainwright, who was mother to the three of us and our late brother Andrew, was a powerful political force and a pioneer of social networks to promote reform. Although she tried gamely, the frailties of increasing age prevented her from mastering Facebook, Twitter or Bebo. But she had created her own, hands-on versions, years before her death, aged 88.Like many women of her generation, she seemed in public to be primarily a devoted assistant to her husband of 55 years, Richard, the late Liberal MP for Colne Valley in the Yorkshire Pennines. So she was, but she had opinions of her own and a genius for spreading them on doorsteps and through an extraordinary web of friends and contacts.Always welcoming and open, this was the proto-Facebook which gave the Colne Valley Liberal party a strength that took its opponents and national political commentators by surprise, notably in 1966 when the seat was the only one in the country lost by Labour at the general election. Joyce used the same techniques with equal skill, modesty and her natural cheerfulness at Gipton Methodist, a small chapel on a large social housing estate in Leeds, and as a governor of the nearby Wykebeck primary school. She was the oldest of five children of Arthur and Emmeline Hollis of Leeds, a conservative and Anglican couple but with radical views instilled by the ordeal of the first world war. Arthur was a pilot shot down and taken prisoner, while Emmy nursed on the western front. When Joyce met Richard, a Methodist with Quaker links as a conscientious objector in the Friends Ambulance Unit during the second world war, they chimed in their warm, humanitarian outlook and zeal for social change. Her adventures in the cause took her in 1973 to rebel-held areas of Guinea- Bissau during the Portuguese coloni _NULL_
- Richard Sanderson obituary
My father, Richard Sanderson, who has died aged 63 after a hernia operation, exemplified the best qualities of a general practitioner. He was devoted to his patients, of whom there were tens of thousands over his 30 years in the same surgery in Drayton, Hampshire.Richard was as focused on their health as emotional beings as he was on their physical problems. His dedication was admirable – not a single copy of the British Medical Journal arrived without being studied, annotated and filed. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and emigrated to London with his family as a child. Richard managed to assimilate into British culture while still maintaining a distinctively Aussie laid-back attitude to life. He was educated at Christ's Hospital school, near Horsham, West Sussex, and then Trinity Hall, Cambridge.Coming from august medical stock – his father Kenneth Sanderson was a professor of dermatology at St George's hospital, London – Richard forged his own path, treating people, not diseases. He was also a considerate and demanding trainer of young doctors, and many benefited from his guidance over the years. He was much admired by colleagues and patients and no other doctor's Christmas could have been blessed with so many bottles of Harvey's Bristol Cream.Medicine was not his whole life. He was an accomplished musician (following in the footsteps of his mother, Ronda Gehling, who was one of Australia's most renowned pianists in the 1950s), who loved and feared his cello in equal measure. He was also a genuine renaissance man – equally at home discussing Euripides as epididymides. He is survived by his second wife Jenny, my two sisters, Elly and Fran, and me.DoctorsHealthAustraliaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to o ヘルニア手術後63歳で死去した父は、リチャードサンダーソン、一般開業医の最高の品質を例示

Irish Times poll puts support for Ireland's ruling party at just 17%, down 7% since SeptemberSupport for Ireland's ruling Fianna Fáil party has plummeted to a historic new low, according to a poll published tomorrow. The poll in the Irish Times puts the party's support at just 17%, down 7% since September.Fine Gael, the main opposition party, and Sinn Féin received a major boost in the poll, with Labour losing some ground. It is the first national survey since last week's budget, which was one of the harshest in the country's history. The figures are the lowest ever recorded in an Irish Times poll for Fianna Fáil, a Taoiseach or government.Fine Gael is up 6% to 30%, Labour down 8% to 25%, the Green Party is unchanged at 2%, and Sinn Féin has almost doubled its support by moving up 7% to 15%. Independents and others are up 2% to 11%.A combination of Fine Gael and Labour would give the two parties a large majority in the Irish parliament.Satisfaction with the government is down 5% to just 8%. 90% of voters are dissatisfied with its performance. The poll was carried out on Monday and Tuesday of this week among 1,000 voters nationwide.IrelandHenry McDonaldguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Italian researchers hope to dig up remains of the real Mona Lisa
Excavators in Florence are searching for the bones of Lisa Gherardini, thought to be the model for Leonardo's paintingItalian researchers are planning to dig up bones in a Florence convent to try to identify the remains of a Renaissance woman believed to be the model for the Mona Lisa. If successful, the research might help ascertain the identity of the woman depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece – a mystery that has puzzled scholars and art lovers for centuries and generated countless theories. The project aims to locate the remains of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a rich silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. Tradition has long linked Gherardini to the painting, which is known in Italian as La Gioconda and in French as La Joconde. Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century artist and biographer, wrote that Leonardo painted a portrait of del Giocondo's wife.Gherardini was born in 1479. A few years ago, an amateur Italian historian said he had found a death certificate showing she died on 15 July 1542, and her final resting place was the Convent of St Ursula in central Florence. That is where the digging will begin later his month, said Silvano Vinceti, an art historian and the project leader. The project is part of a trend of employing CSI-like methods in art history, for example to find out about an artist's technique, discover details hidden in a painting or even learn about an artist's life or death. The group led by Vinceti has already reconstructed the faces of some Italian artists on the basis of their skulls, and last year it said it had identified the bones of Caravaggio and discovered a possible cause of death, 400 years after the artist died in mysterious circumstances. The Mona Lisa project uses some of the same techniques applied to the Caravaggio investigati
- In praise of … UFOs | Editorial
The secrecy surrounding the investigation of UFO sightings is meat and drink to the conspiracy theory industryFor those of us working in offices, alien life on this planet is not a hypothesis. It is an established fact. Men in Black got it about right. A cockroach three storeys high and with a bad anger management problem could lurk inside the most benign of human frames. Perhaps that is why the dismissal of UFO sightings has never quite been as confident at the time as official records subsequently imply, hence the susceptibility to hoaxers. The interesting thing about a rag week stunt mounted in the early hours of 4 September 1967 by a group of aircraft engineering apprentices is less the fact that the army's southern command, four police forces, the MoD's intelligence branch and a bomb disposal unit all turned out to defuse six models powered by Ever Ready batteries. It is more that it took four decades for the truth to emerge. Even 20 years after the event, the MoD thought seriously about gagging the retired RAF group captain who dealt with the hoax. The secrecy surrounding the investigation of UFO sightings, from such trained observers of flight as commercial pilots, is meat and drink to the conspiracy theory industry. The history of UFO sightings is entwined with an equally byzantine narrative of official cover-up. Did a UFO crash at Roswell in New Mexico in 1947 or was it an experimental high-altitude balloon? Or are people suffering from innocently transformed memories of military accidents? The doubt itself is telling. The next alien who crashes on this planet should call a press conference.UFOsMilitaryguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Letters: From Grunwick to Gate Gourmet
In November 2009, in one of her last public appearances, Jayaben Desai (Obituaries, 29 December) attended a seminar at the Women's Library in London, where we organised an exhibition entitled Striking Women: Voices of south Asian women workers from Grunwick to Gate Gourmet, and talked about her memories of the Grunwick strike. She told the audience of her satisfaction that, although the sacked workers at Grunwick were not reinstated and the workers were still not able to join a union, conditions and benefits of many migrant workers have improved since the 1970s, though she was well aware of the need to continue to organise and stand up for one's principles and dignity.Since 1978, there have been a number of other high-profile labour disputes in the UK in which south Asian women have played a vanguard role. One of the most recent involves the sacked workers at the Gate Gourmet catering firm at Heathrow airport, where some 60 workers are still protesting what they claim was unfair dismissal. In September 2007 Jayaben sent a message of solidarity and a cheque to these women on the occasion of their anniversary rally and fundraising event. Although the Grunwick strike was over 30 years ago, Jayaben was a powerful figure until the last.Professor Ruth Pearson University of Leeds, Professor Linda McDowell University of Oxford, Dr Sundari Anihta University of LincolnWomenWomen in politicsGenderguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Does civility matter? | The question
The Arizona shootings may prompt reflection on whether we can be polite when debating things we profoundly disagree aboutIn the aftermath of the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, there has been a lot of talk about the poisonous and violent character of American political rhetoric, and the way in which this may be corroding society. But is it reasonable to expect society to handle profound differences without brutality and rudeness? In particular, religious discussion seems to attract ferocity and dismissal of other people's opinions. This raises some deep questions. Is society possible without civility? Is politeness itself dishonest and damaging when carried beyond a certain point? Should there be different standards of politeness when discussing facts and values – is it possible or even desirable to be as rude as you like about someone's factual claims while respecting their expressions of value?Monday's responseSteven Hepburn: We must respect our opponents' humanityArizona shootingUnited Statesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Japan's Nikkei plunges 6.18% in earthquake aftermath
Manufacturers and power companies are badly hit, as the Bank of Japan pledges 15 trillion yen ($183bn) in liquidity to reassure markets following earthquake and tsunamiShares in Japan's major companies fell sharply on Monday in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the country last Friday, despite efforts by the Bank of Japan to shore up confidence. After a heavy sell-off, the Nikkei has just closed for the day down 633.94 points at 9620.49, a fall of 6.18%. At one stage it was down by 7%.The trading session was dominated by the ongoing rescue efforts across the country, and the news that a second reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi atomic power plant had exploded.Tokyo Electric Power, which operates the Fukushima plant, saw its shares plunge by 23.6%.Japanese manufacturers, many of whom have been forced to suspend operations, also led the fallers. Nissan fell by 9.5%, Sony by 9.12%, Toyota by 7.93% and Canon by 5.92%.The losses came as the BoJ offered to pump a total of 15 trillion yen (£114bn) into the banking system, to reassure any investors who feared that the Japanese markets would simply seize up. It had already promised to prevent speculators profiting from the disaster. The offer of liquidity helped to weaken the yen, which had threatened to hit record highs against the dollar early this morning. The BoJ also expanded the size of its asset-purchasing programme by around 5 trillion yen, and voted to leave interest rates at their current record low [of zero to 0.1%]. Some economists, though, were disappointed that the BoJ did not change its overall assessment of the Japanese economy.Stock marketsJapan earthquake and tsunamiJapanGraeme Weardenguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject

- Ireland crisis: nine out of 10 want Brian Cowen out
Taioseach's government is one of the most unpopular ever with 90% expressing dissatisfaction according to a new pollIt just confirms what the country already knew. Brian Cowen is leading possibly the most unpopular government since the foundation of the state barely 100 years ago. An overwhelming 90% – almost unheard of in political polls – have expressed dissatisfaction with the government in the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll. Cowen's personal rating is almost on the floor – at just 14%, down five points on the previous poll conducted by the paper in September. If there were an election tomorrow, Fianna Fail would be voted out of office – the party would get just 17% of seats while their Green Party coalition partners would get just 2%. The findings are a record low for a government. They also show a surge in support for Sinn Fein which is up seven points at 15%, if an election were held tomorrow. The poll, which puts support for any Irish government at the lowest since the Irish Times starting polling in 1982, show just how out of step Cowen is with the mood of the nation. Last week he vowed to lead the party into the general election with what Fianna Fail TDs considered a barn-storming performance in the Dail and later on RTE radio.Critics said backbenchers and Fianna Fail ministers had a rude awakening on the way if they thought this flash of brilliance would be the party's salvation. Voters believe Cowen has failed abysmally as a leader through the financial crash which ended with an IMF bail out earlier this month. Fine Gael is back on course to be the biggest parliamentary party after the election with 30% saying they would vote for them but Labour is not far behind with 25%. - From the archive, 25 October 1980: An observer of ferment
Originally published in the Guardian on 25 October 1980Lord Carrington, our Foreign Secretary, will spend the coming week in Budapest and Warsaw. He goes at a crucial and confused time. Although his trip was scheduled long before Poland's continuing crisis, he will be the first Western statesman to visit the country since the upheavals. When the visit was first mooted Lord Carrington no doubt assumed that he would be talking to his hosts about Afghanistan and the Madrid conference called to review progress on the pledges signed at Helsinki in 1975. Since then, of course, the world has moved a little.Poland has a new leadership, pledged to reformist policies. The most obviously corrupt and anti-democratic elements in the party are being purged and there are promises of more fundamental purging to come. Parliament, the press and the Church have flexed their muscles. So, above all, has the Polish working class, which now has its first genuinely independent trade union movement, Solidarity, in the history of international communism. The crucial debate between Solidarity and the state over how explicitly the new unions will recognise the leading role of the party is still being argued out inside the Warsaw district court and in the streets outside the court house. But, whatever the eventual outcome, Solidarity exists, has many millions of members and is not subject to the dictates of political commissars, home grown or made in Moscow. Short of suppression on a scale not seen in Eastern Europe since 1956, there can be no turning back.Nor, as long as Solidarity continues to accept the socialist basis of the economy and the leading role of the party, has the Government given any open indication that it wishes to turn back. If Poland's neighbours leave well alone, all that remain もともと10月25日1980Lordキャリントンガーディアン紙に掲載、我々の外務次官は、ブダペスト、ワルシャワで来週を過ごすことになります

- The Eliot Spitzer scandal's true victims | Melissa Ditmore
The New York attorney general was disgraced for hiring escorts, but never went to jail – unlike the sex workers he prosecutedEliot Spitzer was the attorney general and then governor of New York state. As attorney general, he prosecuted prostitution rings, as well as mafia dons and corrupt financial managers. In 2005, Spitzer, then attorney general, prosecuted owners and employees of the escort agency New York Confidential, sending top-rated escort-turned-author Natalie McLennan and artist-turned-booker Hulbert Waldroup to prison. As governor, Spitzer signed a law increasing penalties for clients of prostitutes (PDF). When it came out that he was himself a client, Spitzer resigned. He was not charged with any crime. CeeCee Suwal served six months and has a felony conviction for arranging Spitzer's meeting with the escort that led to his downfall. Each appears in a new documentary, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, to be released across the US on 12 November, this week. One person who isn't interviewed, however, is Ashley Dupre. She was the escort Spitzer met in Washington, DC; after the scandal broke, she later became a NY Post columnist. Director Alex Gibney's visually beautiful film attempts to rehabilitate Spitzer's image. Dupre is slammed for her media appearances – seemingly because they inhibited a comeback for Spitzer. Her former boss, CeeCee, is far more generous, praising Dupre's ability to move ahead after her role in the scandal. Spitzer is a wealthy man with no criminal record who now hosts a CNN show. Gibney has misplaced his efforts attempting to vindicate Spitzer. Instead, those convicted felons – put away by Spitzer for so-called victimless crimes – are the people who really need the image overhaul now that they are out of jail. - Elizabeth Edwards: author of her own destiny | Melissa McEwan
The fact that she was forced to transcend the role of 'political wife' only underlines the dignity and strength she did it withHealthcare crusader, author, activist, attorney and mother of four, Elizabeth Edwards has died after a long battle with breast cancer. There will be many pieces written about her. All of them, if they're honest, will discuss what a passionate and knowledgeable advocate for healthcare reform Edwards was, even before she had occasion to make use of healthcare services in a fight for her life. Many of them will note her trailblazing internet savvy, or her enviable political skill, or her formidable television presence on cable news, or her bestselling books, or her fine legal career. And they will say that she was John Edwards' wife, once upon a time. From there, there will be, in many recountings of Elizabeth Edwards' time on this planet, a digression into a familiar tale of victimhood, or sainthood, or some insufferable devil's advocacy that she was really diabolical, a ruthlessly ambitious political mastermind who had no actual feelings about the implosion of her 30-year marriage, aside from the exasperation of public embarrassment and the inconvenience of derailed plans – the same story they were telling about Hillary Rodham Clinton all those years ago.Although I worked briefly for John Edwards' 2008 campaign, I spoke to Elizabeth on only a few occasions (the first of which was her firing me, in response to a mendacious press release issued by Bill Donohue, which asserted that I was an anti-Catholic bigot, followed quickly by a call to rehire me, after the blogosphere erupted). I cannot say, nor will I pretend, that I knew her well – or, at all, really, except in a professional capacity. What I knew about her, however, was that she was fiercely pr
- Auf wiedersehen Britart: Germany wins when it comes to art | Jonathan Jones
Is Germany the greatest European art nation of the 20th century?Which country leads Europe in contemporary art? Britain, of course, you answer. Look at all those people flocking to Tate Modern. Wrong. The best artists in Europe today are German. The towering geniuses Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer radically contrast in how they conceive art yet both, from their divergent perspectives, one super-cool, the other romantic, achieve a profundity that makes most British art look trite. But to widen the question – which was the greatest European art nation of the 20th century? France? Wrong again. It was Germany. Only Germany has been at the forefront of modern art from the early 20th century right up until today. Paris declined as a creative capital after 1939, but German artists have been revolutionary for 100 years without missing a beat. The passion of expressionist painting and cinema, the fragmentation grenades of Dada, the idealism of the Bauhaus and realism of Neue Sachlichkeit – these German art movements of the early 20th century did not give way, as in France, to cultural decline but instead burned on into the 1960s and 70s, when Joseph Beuys showed that art can still reach into myth and memory to renew the world. Beuys and his legacy – continued by Kiefer, rejected by Richter – coincided with a great renewal of German cinema: for one aspect of the German genius is that fine art and film have merged there since the days of Murnau. And a final question – who created the Renaissance? Well, Italy did, but Germany was the first northern country to adapt Renaissance ideas to its own culture, and the only land north of the Alps to produce one of the masters of the High Renaissance – the towering figure of Albrecht Dürer, whose genius is celebrated in a timely new book ドイツは20世紀の偉大なヨーロッパの芸術の国ですか?現代美術のヨーロッパをリードしてどの国?英国はもちろん、あなたが答える
