- Bidisha's thought for the day: Guinness World Records
Is there a record for the book that makes you feel disappointed in humanity?Is there a record for the world's most pointless book? The one that makes you feel a tad disappointed in humanity? This year's Guinness Book of World Records is just out. Surely it features an entry for the biggest gulf between intentions and result? It's meant to inspire with a salutary vision of all that we are capable of on this planet. Once we had Joan of Arc, we had Mother Teresa, we had the Amazons (now the name of a little-known struggling local bookshop). Now we have the woman with the world's longest tongue. Don't get excited, it's only four inches.For every record-breaking artist such as Adele or Lady Gaga, both in this year's edition, there is the world's largest pizza, which could be eaten by the world's largest crocodile, with the world's largest cat (he's called Stewie) for dessert, perhaps along with US tween singer Justin Bieber as a palate-cleansing side snack. I'm not sure what Bieber's in for. World's most misplaced act of solidarity, for his duet with Chris Brown? Listen to me, Justin: that wasn't a good life choice.For ease of summary, I've combined all the most eye-catching record winners into one huge hairball. There's the world's most elastic woman, with her head between her feet, chucking five bottles of conditioner into her 4ft afro, and combing the food out of her 7ft dry, greying beard with her tangled, curly, dirt-ingrained, three-metre fingernails. I am gagging as I write this.I'm not sure what I'd get my world record for. Celibacy? Twelve blissful years, apart from one tiny mistake. - Soyuz spaceship blasts off for ISS mission
Since the retirement of the space shuttles, the US is dependent on Russia to fly astronauts to the space station, at £37m eachA Soyuz spaceship carrying two Russians and one American astronaut has blasted off for the International Space Station (ISS) after more than a month's delay over a problem with the hull of the Russian-built capsule.Nasa astronaut Joseph Acaba, veteran cosmonaut Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin, who is departing on his first space flight, launched in clear skies aboard the Soyuz TMA-04M rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Tuesday.The trio will berth early on Wednesday, joining Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, Nasa's Don Pettit and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers aboard the ISS.Since the retirement of the space shuttles last year, the US is dependent on Russia to fly astronauts to the ISS, which costs $60m (£37m) per person.Moscow hopes a smooth mission will begin to restore confidence in its space programme after a string of launch mishaps last year.Tuesday's flight was delayed from 30 March to allow Russia's partly state-owned space contractor, RKK Energia, to prepare a new capsule for launch after an accident during pressure tests damaged the Soyuz crew capsule.The previous crew of three at the ISS returned from the station in late April, following a delay due to safety fears after an unmanned Russian Progress craft taking supplies to the station broke up in the atmosphere in August.That was one of five botched launches last year that marred celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Soviet pilot Yuri Gagarin's first human space flight, including a long-awaited unmanned mission to return samples from the Martian moon Phobos.International Space StationSpaceKazakhstanUnited StatesRussiaEuropeguardian.co.uk © 2012 null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Russian Superjet crash: Indonesian searchers find black box
Sukhoi Superjet 100 crashed into Mount Salak during demonstration flight, killing all 45 people on boardIndonesian special forces have found the black box voice and data recorder of a new Russian passenger jet that crashed into a dormant volcano, killing all on board.The recorder could help explain the cause of the deadly crash of the Sukhoi Superjet 100, which had been on a short demonstration flight for potential buyers. Indonesian search and rescue agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso said it was found near the tail of the shattered wreck at the bottom of a 500-metre ravine.The device was delivered to investigators late on Tuesday. It was badly burned and lost its orange colour, making it harder for search teams to find it among the trees and heavy brush, Prakoso said.The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is Russia's first passenger jet model since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago. It was being demonstrated for potential buyers when it hit Mount Salak at 480mph on 9 May.Tatang Kurniadi, who heads the country's national safety commission, said he and his Russian colleagues would make a joint official announcement about the black box on Wednesday. The data would be analysed in Indonesia with assistance from Russian experts.The Superjet is intended to help resurrect Russia's aerospace industry. The plane was being demonstrated for representatives of Indonesia's domestic airlines, which are among its biggest potential buyers.Air transportIndonesiaRussiaguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Peter Robinson's 2011 music roundup
Pitbull shouts, Ed Sheeran strums, and everything comes with a gloomwobbleIt takes a few years' distance to look back on a year and define what it really sounded like, but the three front-running noises for 2011 are Pitbull shouting about being in the club, Ed Sheeran strumming a guitar, and someone, somewhere, slapping a dubstep gloomwobble over a pop starlet's future single in the hope that it might be played by one of the handful of Radio 1 DJs not frothing at the mouth over Pitbull and Sheeran.Two of the year's best videos came from Chase And Status (their Blind Faith video sent clapped-out ravers of a certain age into a nostalgic tailspin) and Duck Sauce (whose unsavoury Big Bad Wolf clip is hard to describe without ruining the gag, but don't YouTube it when your relatives are round), while the pop yang to the yin of PJ Harvey winning the Mercury and various end-of-year critics polls came with the news that Rebecca Black's LOLpop behemoth, Friday, was one of 2011's most searched-for songs online.Black's success was anticipated by nobody, but anticlimaxes peppered the year: Kanye West & Jay-Z's Watch The Throne proved to be somewhat less than the sum of its parts, for instance, and Lady Gaga's Born This Way didn't knock the planet off its axis quite as deftly as fans had predicted. But the news that did knock the wind out of 2011, and marked a singular spirit falling out of pop forever, was the death in July of Amy Winehouse. Amy's passing put a subdued edge on the rest of the year, and made the demise of Dananananaykroyd seem almost irrelevant. - Michael Jackson's estate earned £173m in year after star's death
The 'King of Pop' generated more income than Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and Jay-Z combined in 2010Michael Jackson's This Is It tour was the singer's plan to try to regain some control over the debts he had amassed during his extravagant life, and ultimately the preparation for it played its part in his death. But it was also his death which proved just how strong his selling power was.His estate received a huge boost in the wake of his death and saw him generate £173m in the 12 months after he died.With a succession of timeless hits, sales of his material increased dramatically as fans rushed out to capture some of the magic which saw him labelled the King of Pop.Coupled with radio play royalties, the star earned more than Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna and Jay-Z combined during the year after his death in June 2009.While it is not uncommon for major stars to get a sales spike following their death, figures complied by Forbes magazine showed Jackson was the highest earning dead celebrity of 2010, beating the pooled income of the next 12 stars on the list, and four times greater than second-placed Elvis Presley.An increase in radio play and a massive boost in album sales is said to have brought in around £32m, while video games sales, memorabilia and a reissued autobiography also brought in a similar amount.Sales from the This Is It film, assembled from footage of rehearsals for the 02 Arena concerts for which he was preparing when he died, helped add to the millions.But Jackson's greatest money maker had always been his rights to other people's songs, which include his half-share in a catalogue of hits by artists such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles, which famously led to the end of his friendship with Sir Paul McCartney.With his lavish lifestyle, Jackson would rely null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Larry King, pioneering cable showman | Michael Tomasky
I was never a big fan of the CNN star, but King was popular and ubiquitous, if sometimes cheesy: the McDonald's of talk show TVI never really watched Larry King's show. I've typically downshifted from politics and debate by 9pm and am checking the movie or sports channels. But as soon as I say that, and think back over the last 25 years of my life to test the hypothesis, I suppose I have to add: who am I kidding?Everybody watched it at some point or another. He was about as avoidable as McDonald's.So, sure, King, who just announced he's giving up his show after a gaudy quarter-century, has been there for me over the years. I vividly remember the night in August 1998 when Bill Clinton finally felt that he had to acknowledge having an inappropriate relationship with you-know-who. This was the speech, delivered in prime time television from the White House, in which he salted the acknowledgement with various denunciations of prosecutor Kenneth Starr.I'd thought Clinton had done pretty well, but of course, I agreed with every word he said about Starr – and then some. But when he had finished, and Larry King returned to his panel, the unanimous verdict, led by Bob Woodward, was relentless: Clinton had been petulant and immature and weaselly, when what had been required of him that night was a frank and full apology, nothing more and nothing less.This was the function of the King show: establish the lowest-common-denominator conventional wisdom, whether about Bill Clinton or Tiger Woods or Cher or Lady Gaga. In a hurly-burly demotic culture, that's as legitimate a function as … well, not any. But certainly most.Long ago, King had the market to himself, and the show was then innovative. In the final week of the Guardian's tour of Europe we send novelist James Hopkin to Poland in pursuit of its literary soul. He meets publishers and bookshop entrepreneurs in Krakow, who are taking a great literary tradition into the 21st century. We also take advice from world literature tourists on the must-read books from Poland, and discover several of the world's great poets among their recommendations.Meanwhile, with a Russian invasion of the UK imminent – or at least an invasion of authors, as Russia is crowned guest of honour at next week's London Book Fair – we visit Moscow to meet a new generation of writers who are taking up the mantle of Bulgakov, Gorky and Chekhov. We ask them what Gogol has to do with Yuri Gagarin, and why the fantasy writers of today owe so much to an eccentric 19th-century librarian.Reading listNew and Collected Poems by Wislawa Szymborska (Roundhouse)New and Collected Poems by Czesław Miłosz (Penguin Classics)Barbarian in the Garden by Zbigneiew Herbert (Atlantic)Winter Under Water by James Hopkin (Picador)The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem (Harcourt)The Winter Queen by Boris Akunin (Phoenix)Dark Avenues and The Village by Ivan Bunin (Oneworld)Metro 2033 by Dmitri G (Gollancz)2017 by Olga Slavnikova (Duckworth)Claire ArmitsteadLuke HardingJames HopkinTim MabyLindesay Irvine

- Are manned missions a waste of space?
On Tuesday, the world will be awash with talk of courage and vision as it looks back on 50 years of manned space flight, a trail blazed by Yuri Gagarin's 108-minute trip around the planet.But what if the past half-century has been just a cosmic waste of money?Presidents and space agencies insist manned missions will always be at the heart of their space programmes.An astronaut not only embodies the human quest to explore, they argue. He or she can also act on tuition and think swiftly and creatively in ways impossible for a machine.

Reported flotation of online social gaming firm behind Mafia Wars would value it at between $15bn and $20bnThe online social gaming firm Zynga reportedly plans to raise up to $2bn (£1.25bn) with a flotation this week that would value the fledgling internet company at between $15bn and $20bn.Zynga, the firm behind the hugely popular Facebook games Farmville and Mafia Wars, will file plans with the US Securities and Exchange Commission as early as Wednesday to become the latest in a gold rush of social media companies to go public, according to CBNC. Zynga initially intends to sell only 10% of its shares in the hope of driving up their valuation, CNBC reported.The four-year-old gaming firm is expected to become the biggest internet flotation since Google, following sky-high valuations in recent weeks for LinkedIn and the Chinese Facebook', Renren.Zynga, which announced in May plans to partner with Lady Gaga, says it caters to more than 215 million monthly active gamers selling virtual farm animals for real money.According to a source reported by the New York Post to have been approached to invest in the San Francisco-based firm in March, Zynga expects to generate $1.8bn in revenue this year – with a profit of $630m. Secondary market estimates put Zynga's 2010 full-year revenues at $850m.On last year's revenues, a $20bn market cap would value the company at 23 times last year's sales – a higher multiple than the recent big-money technology flotations.Shares in LinkedIn have soared since it went public last month. The social network for professionals is now valued at $8bn after floating with 2010 revenues of $243m and a profit of $15.4m. - Yuri Gagarin and the superstitions of space | Open thread
The first man in space features heavily in Russian cosmonauts' pre-mission rituals. Tell us what superstitions you followIt was 50 years ago today that Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel in space. But as we celebrate the anniversary of this feat of human ingenuity, some may not be aware that an industry defined by precision and cutting edge technology is also one of superstition and ritual.The legacy of Gagarin himself is the backdrop to many of the rituals performed by Russian cosmonauts before they embark on a mission. They leave a red carnation at his memorial wall, visit his old office and ask permission from his ghost before launch. More bizarre is the tradition of male cosmonauts urinating on the right rear wheel of the bus used to transfer them to the launch site (women have the option of dashing a cup of their own urine on the wheel too). And while Nasa astronauts are apparently more reserved, they'll still always eat a breakfast of steak and scrambled eggs on the morning of lift-off.What little rituals do you have before setting off on a big adventure or important task? Are you the superstitious type?SpaceYuri GagarinRussiaNasaguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Stars and stripes in our eyes: what's so special about the American way?
America's cultural influence is stronger than ever – as British excitement at the Oscar success of The King's Speech showsIt is hard to read a newspaper or newspaper site nowadays without being told yet more details about the downfall of America. From Wikileaks to the Obama administration's attempts to find the right approach to revolution in the Middle East, it seems that every event in this fast-moving century can be seen as yet more proof of the failure of American power. But are rumours of US decline exaggerated? A look at the cultural sphere suggests the superpower's obituarists may be getting ahead of themselves.This week saw – according to breathless promoters of Britishness – a great cultural triumph for the land of tea and biscuits. Yes, the Oscars were invaded by our directors, our actors and our royal history, courtesy of the success of The King's Speech. But wait ... Why are we so chuffed? Because we got some recognition from America! It was the popularity of the film there that made it famous, and it was the approval of Hollywood, USA that confirmed its glory.So we don't respect America any more? Phooey. We revere America, imitate America, lap up its inventions. The last time I looked, Apple was a US company. And as The King's Speech has proved, our little British culture never means more to us than when it gets a bit of acclaim in Big America. No wonder, for America becomes more culturally influential all the time.The best contemporary novelists – Philip Roth, Jonathan Franzen – are American. Lady Gaga is American. So is Eminem. The Wire and other HBO dramas are American. Coffee culture is American (disagree if you wish, but at least recognise the paradox if you are reading this in a Starbucks).In Britain, we are past masters at the hypocritical game of la アメリカの文化的な影響はこれまで以上に強い - 王の音声showsItのオスカーの成功で英国興奮はアメリカの没落についてはまだ詳細を言われなくても新聞や最近の新聞社のサイトを読むことは難しいよう
- Paris fashion week looks to a quiet Belgian – and Lady Gaga
With John Galliano gone, the big dilemma is how to refocus on the clothesWith star designer John Galliano now disgraced, dismissed from Christian Dior and rumoured to be headed to rehab, Paris fashion week is facing a huge dilemma.How can it refocus its audience's attention away from the scandal and back on to the actual clothes?Predictably, it fell to Lady Gaga to attempt to steal the fashion spotlight.The opening day featured a classic sartorial duel: wearable clothes versus theatrical tactics.The first big show of the day was from Dries Van Noten – an established yet quieter Belgian designer known for beautiful and inherently wearable clothes – and finished with Lady Gaga debuting as a model for Mugler, the revitalised avant garde label now under the creative direction of Nicola Formichetti, who is also the musician's stylist.Dries Van Noten pitched his new collection firmly at his loyal customer: ostensibly a relaxed but chic woman who is to be found at upscale art openings.The show took place in the opulent surroundings of the Hotel de Ville and matched its ornate surroundings perfectly.Relaxed silk dresses made with a patchwork of different prints had an art deco feel, collarless coats had fur sleeves and were cinched in with skinny belts. Blouses were trimmed with copper-coloured sequins and there was a healthy smattering of tweed, metallic and brocade.Snakeskin ankle boots with amber Perspex heels, a David Bowie soundtrack and messy ponytails subverted the niceness of the collection. In the hands of another designer, this mix of fabrics could have equalled disaster but clothes that carry a Dries Van Noten label are never less than tasteful and wearable.The Mugler show had already been much hyped. Earlier in the week Lady Gaga announced via Twitter that she would
- Britney Spears Debuts New Commercial- Err, Music Video
She's already the princess of pop but should we begin to call her the queen of product placement, too? After seeing Britney Spears' new music video for her song "Hold It Against Me," which debuted yesterday, I was somewhat annoyed to see how non-discreetly products were displayed throughout it. The three brands that jump out at you as you watch a wedding gowned, patent leathered, and sparkled short-shorted Britney do her thing are Makeup Forever, SONY, and PlentyOfFish.com. The last was also featured in the video for Lady Gaga's "Telephone." But unlike Gaga's video, which shamelessly promoted a slew of brands, Britney's product placement seemed, well, just awkward. 彼女は既にポップの王女の私たちがプロダクトプレースメントの王妃を呼び出すために開始する必要があります、あまりにも?彼女の歌のBritney Spears。。u0026#39;の新しい音楽のビデオを見て私はやや非慎重製品はそれで表示されていた方法を見てイライラしていた、その日デビュー。。u0026quot;、私に対してそれをホールド。。u0026quot;

- Kitty Empire's best pop of 2010
The Observer's pop critic reviews a year in which teen pop triumphed over rockFor those listening out for high notes in a withering music industry, the arrival of Take That's Progress album provided some succour. The reunion between Robbie Williams and his erstwhile bandmates sold a much-trumpeted 235,000 on its first day, making it the fastest-selling album so far this century in the UK.But before we raise a toast, it's worth contrasting these with the first day sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops. This shoot-em-up video game had sold 1.4m copies on its first day one week earlier, wiping the floor not only with all music, but with many blockbuster movies as well.Hand-wringers might have had cause to despair of end times thanks also to the rise and rise of Justin Bieber, a US teen-pop moppet seemingly constructed entirely from tweets. Pop ruled; rock sold poorly – unless you're counting all those Kings of Leon mega-gigs, and the stubborn cultural presence of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The Stones had their first No 1 album in 16 years with the re-release of Exile on Main Street, and Keef's autobiography garnered much traction by pointing out some uncharitable things about Mick. The two Apples – Corps and Inc – finally worked out how to digitally juice the Beatles' back catalogue.But surely we have evolved beyond a mindset in which the rude health of music is equated with a preponderance of guitar bands. In many ways, 2010 felt like a groundhog year – 2009, slight return. Homegrown urban music flourished in 2009; 2010 produced a new star in Tinie Tempah. Lady Gaga was omnipresent again, pimping steak tartare couture and touring here twice, even though she released no new music in 2010.Giving music away for free had its cultural moment with Radiohead's In Rainbows in オブザーバーのポップ批評家は、今年は、ティーンポップは、それらが枯れて、音楽業界で高いノートから聞いての到着はそれが進歩のアルバムはいくつかの救助を提供してくださいrockFor triumphed以上レビュー
