During his second world war service in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, my friend Dennis Edmondson, who has died aged 84, suffered serious damage to his health from chlorine gas. This gave him a continuing interest in chemical causes of illness, and he put his knowledge at the disposal of anyone who needed it, spending thousands of pounds from his own pocket for scientific research.Born near Halifax, Yorkshire, he went on to work as a forester and a council gardener. In 1975 he founded the Calderdale Citizens' Protest Against Fluoridation and helped fight off plans by Yorkshire Water to add fluoride to local tap water supplies. The protest petition he organised received 23,000 signatures.Even when elderly, ill and disabled, Dennis continued to make his knowledge available. With four in 10 working women in public sector jobs, redundancies will make a work-life balance even harder to attainThe key election debate will be about the speed, scale and scope of spending cuts. This is a bit strange. It is the recovery of growth that will make the biggest contribution to reducing the deficit by getting tax revenues flowing again. Polls report just as much support for tax rises as spending cuts. But the test of economic virility has become the size of your spending cuts.And virility is the right word here as spending cuts will hit women harder than men. So far men have been bigger losers in the recession job-loss stakes. This is not because women's jobs are inherently more secure – indeed the chances of losing your job are about the same for men and women in hard-hit sectors such as retail, manufacturing or finance. But because those sectors that have suffered the most redundancies employ more men than women, the net result has been more male job losses.But the public sector is different. Big spending cuts and job losses here will hit women, as they are twice as likely as men to work in the public sector. Indeed four in 10 women work in public-sector occupations. This has been particularly important in areas hit hard by private-sector unemployment such as the North East, Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands. In these regions male unemployment is more than 10%, and many families will now depend on a public-sector woman's wage. If public-sector jobs are axed, many families could find themselves without anyone in work.Women often work in the public sector because it offers relatively secure work, flexible working patterns and a chance to build up a decent income in retirement. Both a matriarch and a feminist, my wife, Lesley Fowler, who has died of cancer aged 64, felt that she led a dual life. She was the traditional mother and centre of the family, and a modern working woman who taught about the role of women in contemporary society.Born Lesley Welfare in Kent, she was the eldest of four children who lived in a house without electricity until she was 13. Surviving on benefits, the family earned extra cash by picking fruit and hops during the summer.Lesley's working-class single mother believed that the way out of poverty was through education. Despite passing the exams for the local grammar school, Lesley was turned down after her interview. She felt that this was because of her background, and it shaped her lifelong commitment to encouraging and inspiring other women to take up educational opportunities.She attended Olborough Manor school in Maidstone and trained as a secretary at Maidstone technical college. After her mother died in 1969, Lesley was the backbone of the family. She became the full-time national secretary of the Youth Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the mid‑60s.Lesley and I met when she was organising the distribution of CND leaflets at the 1967 Liberal party conference in Blackpool. We married the next year and then moved to Manchester, where Lesley enrolled at the polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University) to study history and politics.We then had two sons, Tom and Sam, by which time Lesley was teaching secretarial studies at Bradford College. The difference between Kent and Yorkshire pronunciations provided much entertainment in her shorthand classes. Waterloo Station, LondonSite-specific theatre takes on a new meaning with this glorious adaptation of E Nesbit's 1906 children's classic. First seen at the York National Railway Museum, Damien Cruden's production has arrived at the former Eurostar platform at Waterloo station; and, for all its grandeur, this makes the perfect setting for a story that is, in part, about the romance of rail travel.Mike Kenny's adaptation also subtly reminds us that Nesbit, as a co-founder of the Fabian Society and lifelong socialist, was hymning communal values. In this version, the story becomes a memory play: the adult Roberta, Peter and Phyllis recall what it was like to be uprooted as children after their father's false imprisonment for treason. Transported to rural Yorkshire, they refuse to let sudden poverty diminish their social conscience.Not only does their mother take in a Russian political refugee, the children avert a potentially fatal rail crash, risk their lives to rescue a boy from a tunnel, and redistribute goods to a local station porter; the moment when he first rejects their seeming charity and then accepts it in the intended spirit is profoundly moving.Kenny's version brings out Nesbit's radicalism, while the staging is intensely imaginative. Joanna Scotcher's design places the audience on facing platforms between which the action whizzes back and forth, giving the story a dynamic momentum and striking images: the collapse of a cutting is evoked by a tumbled heap of luggage; and the mysterious old gentleman, the children's fairy godfather, is seen heading off in a distant vista of steam. It is made up of football hooligans, racists and even former loyalist paramilitaries who are now living in England.Unfortunately, we know only too well what this type of terror can bring and Bradford is still recovering from the disturbances of 2001, the consequences of a previous racist incursion. Those events did great damage to our city and any repeat may well cause irreparable damage.The call for a ban has not been taken lightly. We live in a democracy where the right to protest is fundamental but with rights come responsibilities and there has to be limits on people who set out to terrorise, frighten and provoke trouble.We are calling on the home secretary and West Yorkshire police to listen to the will of the people of Bradford and stop this march of hate.Over the last few weeks I have been out campaigning with Hope Not Hate in building the petition. My friend Phil Kelly, who has died aged 59, was an extraordinary and gifted painter. His vibrant canvases have captured the imagination of collectors and supporters worldwide, including the poet Seamus Heaney, for whose wife, Marie, he completed a set of book illustrations, and the chef Rick Stein, for whose Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, Phil created a mural. Although raised in Ireland and England, he had lived in Mexico City since 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999.Born in Dublin, Phil was educated at Rugby school, Warwickshire. He was expelled, and later attended college in Bath, where his artistic talent was immediately recognised. He moved to London, to Whitby, in north Yorkshire, and then to Portugal, subsidising his painting with a variety of occupations.His desire for light and colour took him in 1983 to Mexico City. He arrived with £50 in his pocket and no Spanish. He was on a visit to England in 1985 when an earthquake struck Mexico City, taking close friends and all of his Mexican work. He returned to work and exhibiting in London, but left for Mexico again in 1989, marrying Ruth Munguia, a cultural administrator, the following year. They had two daughters, Ana Elena and Maria José.His career was flourishing and he took up painting full time. Ruth was a major influence in this, organising exhibitions and promoting his work. After the art collector Patrick J Murphy happened upon his exhibition Babel Descifrada (Babel Deciphered), at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art in 1996, shows followed in Dublin.Wherever Phil lived, there were always the same ingredients that reflected the man: drawings and colour trials taped to walls, good literature, blues or jazz music, wine, excellent food and paint. Hyman Frankel, my friend and comrade for 40 years, who has died aged 91, will probably be best remembered for Out of This World: An Examination of Modern Physics and Cosmology, published in 2003. In this book, Hyman applied the philosophy and methodology of dialectical materialism, derived from Marx, to explore crises in physics, the economy and society as a whole. Although it was intended to be read by professional physicists, cosmologists and philosophers, Hyman made the book accessible to general readers.By the time I met him, Hyman had already had an amazingly diverse career. In the early 1940s, he was a research technician in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, where pioneering work on nuclear physics was undertaken. When the rest of the team migrated to the US, Hyman decided to stay in the UK and went to work as a coalminer in the South Yorkshire Coalfield, until ill health forced him to quit.He then trained as a teacher of mathematics, took a degree in sociology from Birkbeck College and became a trade union official. In 1970, he published Capitalist Society and Modern Sociology, in which he challenged the orthodox sociology being taught in universities.Hyman was born into a Jewish community in the East End of London; his father was the beadle of a local synagogue. By the age of 18, he had rejected the Zionist ideology with which he had grown up. His experience of seeing Oswald Mosley's Blackshirt marches through east London prompted him to join the Young Communist league.He was a member of the Communist party of Great Britain until it was disbanded in 1991. After that, he joined the Alliance for Green Socialism. He chaired his local branch of the trade union Amicus, which became Unite, until two years ago. It may be pedantic to class Julia Gillard as Welsh but it is splendid to witness one of Wales's political daughters reaching the topOdd that it should take the Australians to install a Welsh-born prime minister, as they did last week, when the British have never done so. Lloyd George, identified in some quarters (including, regrettably, this one) as a native of Wales, was in fact born in Manchester. The standard reference sources fail to trace the roots of some PMs, but it seems that while Bedford Row, London and Wotton in Buckinghamshire can claim two apiece, and two were born in Ireland, and a fine succession from the Earl of Bute to Blair and Brown first saw the light in Scotland, Wales has given us none. It has produced many near misses – some unmistakably Welsh, like Labour's deputy leader Aneurin Bevan and its twice-defeated Neil Kinnock; others less so. Roy Jenkins was born near Pontypool, while the Tory might-have-been Michael Howard is recognisably Welsh in vowel sounds if not in demeanour. Geoffrey Howe and Michael Heseltine are both also Welsh natives; meanwhile Kenneth Baker was born in Monmouthshire, which wasn't strictly Wales at the time, but is today. John Prescott, always classed as a pugnacious Yorkshire deputy, was born in Prestatyn. It may be pedantic to class Julia Gillard in Canberra as Welsh while recasting Lloyd George's Welsh wizardry as Mancunian magic instead. Our friend Gillian Sandford, who has died of cancer aged 54, was one of those women journalists in the 1980s whose independent spirit took them to far-flung corners of the world to report with distinction from danger zones. In later years, she worked for aid agencies in Darfur and Afghanistan.Brought up in Bath, Gillian began her career as a news reporter for provincial newspapers in Devon, then the north-east, soon gaining a name nationally and securing scholarships to Japan, Iceland, France and Germany. Her first lengthy overseas job was in the US, where she worked as a reporter for a news agency and later as a staff reporter for US News and World Report in Washington.Gillian covered the Balkans for several years. She worked for a spell as a war correspondent for Time and also for the Guardian. Based in Belgrade, she led a small team reporting on the Kosovo conflict. Six years ago she was engaged by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (the international media development charity) and trained Afghan journalists in Kabul. She supported them on stories that were part of a weekly internet-based news service that were also translated into Dari and Pashtu and printed by Afghan papers. A year later, she was employed as a communications specialist to the director of ACT-Caritas, one of the biggest aid operations in south and west Darfur.During her time in the UK, she was foreign editor of the Yorkshire Post for five years, and deputy news editor of the now-defunct European newspaper.
