- Gang arrested in New York stole techniques from The Town
Crew of five men detained by the NYPD reportedly admit they picked up heist tips watching Ben Affleck's 2010 Boston-set dramaA crew of alleged burglars arrested in New York say they learned tricks from the Ben Affleck film The Town to help carry out 62 robberies, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It was reported that the five men, who were arrested by the NYPD last weekend, told detectives that they had splashed bleach on ATMs and cash drawers, cut the power to robbery locations and used miners' headlamps to see in the dark after watching Affleck and his fictional crew do the same in the 2010 crime thriller. The Town, which pitted a gang of Boston criminals against a FBI agent (played by Mad Men's Jon Hamm), also saw Affleck's gang dress up as skeletons, nuns and policemen during their heists. The real-life crew, who police say made a total of $217,000 robbing discount stores, pizza restaurants and delis in Brooklyn and Queens, dressed in street clothes. However, another criminal duo, who held up a Chicago bank dressed in the same type of nun costumes used in the film, were arrested and charged in May.Four of the suspects from the latest case are awaiting arraignment. In this week's podcast, we travel into worlds that are darker and more outlandish than any conspiracy thriller. Misha Glenny explains what he learned about the cutting edge of criminal behaviour while researching his latest book, about international cybercrime, and Luke Harding describes the dirty tricks that were played on him and his family by Russia's secret security service while he was working as a reporter in Moscow. In case anyone is tempted to doubt the story Harding tells in his new book, we listen in to tape recordings of the interrogation that led to his expulsion from Russia, and he takes us to London's Millennium Hotel where Alexander Litvinenko is believed to have been poisoned by Russian secret agents in 2006. We also interview Anna Funder about treading the boundary between fiction and non-fiction in her new novel about refugees fleeing Germany in the run-up to the second world war. - Cannes 2012: Mud – review
Matthew McConaughey gives the best performance of his career as a fugitive befriended by two Mississippi boysScreening right at the end of the festival, Jeff Nichols's film Mud made an urgent late bid for the Palme d'Or. An atmospheric thriller and coming-of-age tale set on a slow bend in the Mississippi river, Mud has the look and feel of an American indie classic. It is a surefire best picture nominee at next year's Oscars and likely to win some kind of award at Cannes, receiving the warmest applause of the festival at its morning press screening.Mud takes its name from its lead character, played by Matthew McConaughey, delivering the best performance of his career (and his second at the festival, after The Paperboy) as a fugitive holed up on an island in the Mississippi after murdering a rival for his lover Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Mud is wanted by the police and bounty hunters hired by the murdered man's family. He is discovered, however, by two 14-year-old boys, Ellis and Neckbone, who live in houseboats along one of the river's swampy tributaries. They fall under Mud's charismatic spell and are talked into helping him rebuild an old motor boat stranded in a treetop – dumped there, one assumes, years before by a flood or a tornado. The boys are beautifully played by Tye Sheridan (who starred as one of Brad Pitt's sons in last year's Palme d'Or winner, The Tree of Life) and Jacob Lofland. The teenagers' thrill and adventure in secretly aiding Mud gives the film a Huckleberry Finn-ish flavour that blends with something akin to Rob Reiner's 1986 classic Stand By Me and Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter. For such an American film, there are also clear echoes of British classics such as Great Expectations and Whistle Down the Wind.As the net tightens around null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - In praise of … same-language subtitling | Editorial
One of the simplest and boldest literacy campaigns around is helping Indian childrenSubtitles are usually the domain of Danish thrillers or obscure films about the sufferings of Anatolian peasants: posh foreign imports, in other words. But in India, the state broadcaster Doordarshan puts Hindi subtitles on programmes of Hindi film songs, Gujarati captions on Gujarati shows and so on. It may sound daft, but Brij Kothari's same-language subtitling (SLS) is one of the simplest and boldest literacy campaigns around. Over 250 million Indians who are classed as literate cannot even read newspaper headlines – and by captioning popular Hindi or Bengali songs in the same language, adults and children get a fun lesson in their mother tongue. It's effective, too. A Nielsen study of 13,000 children showed that 24% became good readers with schooling alone. But when exposed to 30 minutes a week of subtitled film songs, that proportion more than doubled to 56%. To use the Hindi: theek hai, na (pretty good, eh?).IndiaLiteracyguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. The financial horror-thriller Margin Call opens wide tomorrow, and if it's as good as some critics say it is, we're going to be seeing a lot more #occupyregalcinemas hashtags before the weekend is out. The film has a top-drawer cast acting to the best of their abilities: Spacey, Stanley T, Demi, Jeremy, Mr. Spock, the Mentalist guy (looking very Jamie Dimon-esque) and Penn Badgely (who is that?). It's a loose recapture of the events in 2008 that led to the fall of Lehman, Bear Stearns et al, shortly before people's faith in modern banking gyred down the toilet. Helpful for financial journalists who missed calling the crash: the time codes in the lower-left-hand corner of key scenes, stolen from Bruckheimer Inc. movies, so now we in the press can't say we didn't know what time it was when the crap hit the fan. 金融ホラースリラーのマージンコールは、幅広い明日を開き、一部の批評家はそれが言うようにそれはように良いなら、我々は、週末は外になる前に、より多くの#occupyregalcinemasハッシュタグを見ることになるだろう
- Red White & Blue – review
This low-budget American film by a British independent director stars the Australian actor Noah Taylor as a US veteran, unhinged by his experiences as an interrogator in Iraq. He tentatively holds out a hand of friendship to another loner, an abused girl in blue-collar Texas whose reckless promiscuity has made her HIV positive. Then when she becomes the victim of men whom she may have infected with Aids, he wreaks a terrible revenge on them. - Michael – review
The Josef Fritzl affair and similar cases of horrendous incarceration revealed in its wake have now produced a sizable body of documentaries, feature films and fiction too, of which Michael is a minor, rather puzzling addition. The 40-year-old Austrian film-maker Markus Schleinzer, whose first feature film this is, has worked as a casting director on over 60 films, among them Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher, Time of the Wolf and, most significantly, The White Ribbon, on which he coached the child actors. The eponymous Michael (Michael Fuith) is a 35-year-old minor official with an Austrian insurance company, who keeps the 10-year-old Wolfgang (David Rauchenberger) a prisoner in the soundproofed basement of his suburban home. Michael is a bespectacled, nondescript loner with a brother and sister both married with children. He largely keeps to himself, rejecting the advances of a female colleague, whom he physically throws out of his house when she intrudes. He does, however, join two male acquaintances for a skiing weekend in the Tyrol where he has clumsy sex with a woman his own age. Wolfgang, of whose background we learn nothing, is much like any other mildly rebellious pre-teenager, and Michael behaves in the manner of a testy, impatient parent. Twice Michael makes weirdly ambiguous sexual advances, but more typically, he buys a small Christmas tree and sings carols in front of it with Wolfgang. There are inevitably elements of suspense, a couple of shocks, and a sustained sweaty-palmed climax that could justify the film being advertised as a thriller. Indeed Michael is dramatically reminiscent of Robert Shaw's novel The Hiding Place, in the TV version of which Shaw and Sean Connery played British airmen, shot down over Germany and hidden in a cellar for six years af null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Guardian Books podcast: First Book award
In this week's podcast, we're celebrating the new, dedicating the whole programme to the books on the 2011 Guardian first book award shortlist. First up, and with the only non-fiction book in the running this year, is oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee. His extraordinary biography of cancer, The Emperor of All Maladies, has been praised by reviewers, and has already won him a Pulitzer prize in his native US. He talks to us about why he felt he had a duty to write it, and what the reaction has been from the cancer community. Mirza Waheed's novel, The Collaborator, is a thriller about the tangled civil war taking place in his native Kashmir. He talks to Claire Armitstead about the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan and the political intention that lay behind the writing of his novel. Stephen Kelman's Booker-shortlisted Pigeon English, the tale of an 11-year-old Ghanaian boy who turns detective on his council estate in the wake of a murder, draws considerably on the real-life case of Damilola Taylor, the schoolboy who was killed on a Peckham estate in November 2000. Stephen joins us in the studio to talk about writing about current events and his feelings of responsibility towards Taylor and his family. The third novel in contention, Down the Rabbit Hole, which tells the tale of Totchli, the child of a Mexican drugs lord, was voted on to the shortlist by Guardian's books website readers. We met its author, Juan Pablo Villalobos, back in August at the Edinburgh literary festival when he came to a bookshop to meet some readers, with the help of his translator Rosalind Harvey. Our final author, Amy Waldman, tells a story born out of the destruction of the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, in which a competition for a memorial to those kille null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Homeland: Just how realistic is it?
Consultant psychiatrist speaks about hostages and the problems of homecomingsIt is President Obama's favourite TV show, and its British star was among those invited to the state banquet in the White House in honour of David Cameron on Wednesday.Few would doubt that HBOs 'Homeland' is a pretty accomplished TV-thriller; but is it realistic? In the US, reviewers appear to have focussed on the implausibility of the CIA character, agent Carrie Matheson, played by Claire Danes. She is the investigator trying to establish whether US Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) is actually an al-Qaida terrorist in disguise. Brody, afterall, has been held hostage in Iraq for eight years, long enough perhaps, to have been 'turned' by his captors. There is a major flaw in this set-up - as the New York Post pointed out in October last year. The CIA is a bit like our MI6 - their focus is abroad.Running down a possible terrorist here in the US is really a job for domestic law enforcement agencies, such as the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security -- not the CIA. Simply put: The CIA generally fights terrorism overseas, while the FBI and others handle it here, especially when it involves a US citizen like Nick Brody. But the thing that troubled me is this: how come Brody doesn't appear to have had any proper care after his return? Not in the first three episodes anyway. He is left to attack reporters and shoot deer with his gun. He only agrees to go to a veteran's support group after his wife orders him too. Although unlikely these days, the lack of psychiatric assessment for someone who'd been held hostage isn't quite as preposterous as you might think, according to consultant psychiatrist, Walter Busuttil. In the past, he says, freed American hostages have not always been given null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. - Free Men – review
Free Men takes the form of a semi-fictionalised thriller about the role of North Africans in the French ResistanceThere are gaps to be filled in second-world-war history, and this is one: the role of North Africans in the French Resistance. Free Men takes the form of a semi-fictionalised thriller, headed by Tahar Rahim (pictured), who so impressed in A Prophet. He's more profiteer here: an immigrant wheeler-dealer in occupied Paris, forced by the authorities to spy on the city's mosque. Headed by a magnificently hangdog Lonsdale, the mosque is suspected of issuing false papers identifying Jews as Muslims. The realities of war and his own ethnic identity induce a change of heart in Rahim, though it's often difficult to remember there's a war on, the period is so sketchily evoked. The tension doesn't grip as it should, but it's a worthwhile reminder of a moment of Muslim-Jewish co-operation.Rating: 3/5Action and adventureSecond world warSteve Roseguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Arnold Schwarzenegger held Captive by hostage thriller
Schwarzenegger is set to make his acting comeback in a kidnap drama set in Brazil, as well as roles in The Expendables 2 and Last StandArnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to play a kidnapped businessman in the indie thriller Captive, according to Deadline. The announcement – along with the news last week that he is to take a leading role in a sequel to Sylvester Stallone action flick The Expendables – suggests reports of the demise of the former California governor's return to Hollywood may have been exaggerated.Schwarzenegger, 63, revealed in February that he was planning a high-profile comeback, including a possible fifth Terminator film (the fourth to star Schwarzenegger) and a cartoon TV series (and possible movie) titled The Governator. However, his much-publicised matrimonial problems looked likely to derail such ambitions when they were revealed in MayCaptive could see Schwarzenegger as an American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held for ransom. While he tries to escape from an armoured-truck prison cell hidden in a São Paulo landfill, a detective specialising in kidnap and ransom cases works to find him. No director has yet been announced for the project, which is based on a story by Danish film-maker Nicolai Fuglsig and appears to echo the plot of the little-known but well-received 2010 Ryan Reynolds vehicle Buried, in which the actor played a US truck driver hostage trapped alive in a wooden coffin in Iraq.As well as The Expendables 2, Schwarzenegger has the action film Last Stand on his slate. He will play a small-town sheriff tasked with capturing an escaped cartel leader who tries to high tail it to Mexico through his territory. - Michael Jackson left $30m to family
Star's estate reveals that although he was once one of the wealthiest entertainers in the world, it had to pay off big debtsHe was once one of the wealthiest singers in the history of entertainment, but when all Michael Jackson's debts were paid off, just $30m was left in his will for his family. The executors of his estate say they will distribute the $30m to the Jackson Family Trust for the benefit of the singer's mother, his three children and charities, under the terms of the pop megastar's will.In documents filed on Tuesday, the estate said it had generated more than $310m since his death in June 2009, enabling them to pay off dozens of debtor claims and refinance loans at lower interest rates.Jackson, who started his singing career as a child member of the Jackson Five with his brothers, was one of the most popular singers in the world. His Thriller album stayed at number one for 37 weeks in 1982, a record only beaten by the soundtrack to West Side story.Less than 10 years and a string of number one singles and albums later he signed a record-breaking $900m deal with Sony. It remains the biggest recording contract ever signed.Jackson was once one of the wealthiest entertainers in the world, with an estimated fortune of more than $750m.In 2007, the Jackson estate's assets were calculated to be worth more than $1.3bn, much of that down to his stake in the song catalogue that includes most of the Beatles' output. But his net worth, it now transpires, was a fraction of that. However, the family will not have to completely re-adjust from a life of super-wealth. - The Devil's Double – review
Dominic Cooper's turn as Saddam Hussein's son and his body double is watchable but this is violent, unsubtle stuffRight now, James Corden is getting rave reviews for his dual stage performance in One Man, Two Guvnors at London's National theatre. As it happens, his History Boys classmate Dominic Cooper is giving his own doppelgänger turn in this movie set at the time of the Gulf war in 1990. Cooper plays Saddam Hussein's pampered son Uday and also Uday's horrified body double Latif Yahia, in a gruesomely violent, toweringly unsubtle, fantastically crass but watchable thriller, inspired by DePalma's Scarface, with a touch of Bond villainy. Everywhere there is dodgy faux-marble and the gleam of gold plate. Cooper's Saddam Jr is a gap-toothed momma's boy, bully, murderer, rapist and cokehead, surrounded by sycophants, but terrified of assassination, hence the need for a double. Yahia is a less interesting character: tough, unimpressed, disgusted by Uday's crimes, but not extravagantly so. The obvious way for the plot to go would be for Yahia to get to like being Uday, and even to like Uday himself. But these internal dramas are not explored. This isn't exactly a complex study of Iraqi history, but director Lee Tamahori punches it across, and the Stalinesque use of doubles in Iraq is interesting. The tyrant is pathetic, wishing to see only his own reflection wherever he goes.Rating: 3/5Dominic CooperSaddam HusseinPeter Bradshawguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger captured after 16 years on run
Boston crimelord and FBI informant was inspiration for Jack Nicholson character Frank Costello in Scorcese's The DepartedJames 'Whitey' Bulger, a notorious Boston gangster on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list for his alleged role in 19 murders, has been captured near Los Angeles after living on the run for 16 years.Bulger, 81, was the leader of the Winter Hill Gang and a top-level FBI informant when he fled in January 1995 after being tipped off by a former Boston FBI agent that he was about to be indicted. He was arrested by the FBI on Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in Santa Monica after a period of surveillance, according to a local policeman.Bulger will appear at a federal court in LA facing a series of federal charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering. The FBI has endured a public perception that it had not tried very hard to find Bulger, who became a huge source of embarrassment for the agency after the extent of his crimes and the FBI's role in overlooking them became public.Prosecutors said he went on the run after being warned by John Connolly Jr, an FBI agent who had made Bulger an FBI informant 20 years earlier. Connolly was convicted of racketeering in May 2002 for protecting Bulger and his cohort, Stephen 'The Rifleman' Flemmi, also an FBI informant.Bulger, who was the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's character Frank Costello in Martin Scorcese's 2006 crime thriller The Departed, provided the Boston FBI with information on his gang's main rival, the New England Mob, in an era when bringing down the Mafia was one of the FBI's top priorities. But the Boston FBI office was sharply criticised when the extent of Bulger's alleged crimes and his cosy relationship with the FBI became public in
- The Silent House – review
Supposedly based on a true story and allegedly filmed in a single extended take in real time, this occasionally jolting but largely unconvincing Uruguayan horror flick spends 78 minutes (and a coda) with Laura, a pretty young woman, and her father in a deserted, ill-lit country house that they once lived in. - Before the Revolution – review
The 22-year-old Bertolucci made an impressive debut in 1962 with The Grim Reaper, a Rashomon-style thriller about the murder of a prostitute scripted by his mentor, Pier Paolo Pasolini. But it was his second film, Before the Revolution (1964), now rereleased to accompany a well-deserved retrospective at London's BFI Southbank, that made his name. Semi-autobiographical, partly inspired by Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma, and set in 1962 in his native Parma, the film is deeply indebted to the French new wave and centres on Fabrizio, a 20-year-old introspective haut bourgeois student both attracted to and repelled by middle-class conformity and revolutionary Marxism. He has an incestuous affair with his attractive young aunt (a recurrent theme in Bertolucci's work), and it is altogether a dazzling film, both continually vital and something of a time capsule. I think, however, that his best movies are The Conformist, The Spider's Stratagem, the first part of 1900, and, with reservations, his version of one of my favourite novels, Paul Bowles's The Sheltering Sky.Bernardo BertolucciDramaRomanceWorld cinemaItalyPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 knocks the wind out of Sucker Punch
Children's book adaptation debuts at number one, while Zack Snyder's big-budget action falls short of studio expectations. Plus: what will the cleaned-up cut of The King's Speech mean for its box office?Fox's family sequel based on the Wimpy Kids books debuted at number one on an estimated $24.4m (£15m), the studio said on Sunday night. Meanwhile, Warner Bros' adventure fantasy Sucker Punch from Zack Snyder claimed the silver medal on $19m. That figure is going to have to climb considerably otherwise Warner Bros has a costly folly on its hands. That may not be so easy as spring brings a crowded lineup next weekend with the arrival of Summit's Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code and Universal's family extravaganza Hop.Speaking of next weekend, Harvey Weinstein and his cohorts are re-releasing The King's Speech in its new PG-13 version. The best picture Oscar-winner has been a sensation around the world and serves as a ringing endorsement of a vibrant independent sector that continues to consolidate after the financial crisis. It managed to gross $135m through the Weinsteins in its R-rated form in the US and has amassed a further $240m or so overseas, mostly through FilmNation licensees. That said, this whole certification process has been nothing more than posturing. When the Weinsteins petitioned the MPAA ratings authority to lower the rating from R to PG-13, they argued that children needed to see the movie's message about overcoming adversity. The MPAA initially awarded the R rating in response to a sequence of expletives uttered by Colin Firth's character during speech therapy. The Weinsteins can shout all they like about the story's relevance to the next generation, but really all they want is to squeeze as much money as they can from audiences. - Bigelow's Bin Laden film signs Joel Edgerton
Animal Kingdom actor set to play special operative on the hunt for al-Qaida leader in Kathryn Bigelow's rewritten productionKathryn Bigelow is assembling her team for what could be one of the most anticipated and potentially controversial films of the near future. Australian actor Joel Edgerton has reportedly been drafted in for the project tentatively titled Kill Bin Laden, making him the first cast member to join the production, according to the LA Times.Details of Bigelow's film began to emerge following recent events in Pakistan. The director has been planning a movie about the US special forces team hunting the al-Qaida leader for some time, though it was originally to focus on a previous unsuccessful attempt. Following Bin Laden's death, screenwriter Mark Boal – Bigelow's producing and writing partner on Oscar-winner The Hurt Locker – is reportedly planning to rewrite the script in line with recent events.According to the LA Times, Edgerton will play a special operative in a team of commandos. The newspaper cites two sources close to the project who asked not to be identified because they were not authorised to discuss the matter. The Sydney-born actor has been circling a number of high-profile Hollywood roles recently after his bravura turn in acclaimed gangland thriller Animal Kingdom. They include the role of the huntsman in a new version of Snow White, and the lead in the new Bourne movie, The Bourne Legacy. Hurt Locker alumnus Jeremy Renner got the latter part, while Thor's Chris Hemsworth could be in line to join Twilight's Kristen Stewart in the former. Some industry sources had suggested Bigelow might not move forward with Kill Bin Laden if rival projects emerged, but the LA Times implies the project is firmly on the fast track following Bin Laden's death.K

- Cold Fish – review
Three years ago the Japanese poet and film-maker Shion Sono directed the weird four-hour Love Exposure, an elaborately plotted black comedy about the interplay between sex and religion and the way perversions and fetishism can come to seem normal. His new film, Cold Fish, is also a black comedy and by comparison fairly ordinary. The shy owner of a suburban tropical fish shop, his young new wife and a rebellious teenage daughter are drawn into the orbit of the wealthy, outgoing owner of a major tropical fish emporium, who turns out to be a casual serial killer. Inspired by a true story about two Tokyo serial killers who murdered dog-lovers in 1993, it's overlong, drenched in blood and rather like attending a school for apprentice butchers.ComedyWorld cinemaThrillerHorrorJapanPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Red & White – review
A bitter post-second world war conflict between Dutch colonialists and local nationalists followed the liberation of Indonesia from the Japanese occupation and led to the creation of the present republic, largest of all Islamic states. Apart from documentaries, it hasn't attracted much attention, and the only enduring literary work of interest it has inspired is Eric Ambler's 1956 thriller The Night-Comers. This situation has not really been radically altered by the Freedom trilogy, an epic account of the struggle, made by an Indonesian director working with American writers and technicians, the first part of which is Red & White, the colours of the patriotic insurgents.Unfortunately, Red & White is a conventional, unilluminating work, lacking historical context and individual characterisation, the best scenes being old black-and-white newsreels that accompany the final credits. The Dutch troops are sadistic racists, massacring anyone who stands in their way. Their opponents, a group of officer cadets trained to lead the liberation, are the usual cliche team established in second world war movies. The action sequences are moderately well mounted.Action and adventureDramaWorld cinemaIndonesiaPhilip Frenchguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Rosemary's Baby: No 2 best horror film of all time
Roman Polanski, 1968Roman Polanski's first Hollywood feature was an adaptation of Ira Levin's bestseller, and its success launched a trend for devil-baby, evil-kiddy and satanic pregnancy movies that extended well into the 70s. The novel was first recognised as potential film material at proof stage by low-budget horror entrepreneur William Castle, who ended up as the producer and had a fleeting cameo in the film as a man smoking a cigar outside a phone booth.According to a (probably spurious) film-making legend, Polanski, having never before adapted a novel, didn't realise he was allowed to make changes, with the result that his screenplay is remarkably faithful to Levin's book. Mia Farrow, best known for her role in the TV soap opera Peyton Place and as the wife of Frank Sinatra (who served her with divorce papers during the shoot) played Rosemary Woodhouse, a nice Catholic girl who with her husband Guy (John Cassavetes), a struggling actor, moves into an apartment in The Bramford, an old New York block with a sinister history. (The exteriors were filmed outside the Dakota building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where John Lennon would later be shot dead.) Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer play Minnie and Roman Castavet, the nosy neighbours from hell – and that's even before we find out they're satanists. Gordon won a best supporting actress Oscar, the only Academy Award for a horror movie until 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. The film works on multiple levels – as a supernatural thriller (though explicit paranormal elements are limited to a hallucinatory dream sequence and the final shot of the baby's eyes), as a psychological thriller about a paranoid pregnant woman who imagines herself at the centre of a conspiracy, and as the last word in marital betrayal, since t

- Claude Chabrol anatomised the French middle class with a twist of the scalpel
Peter Bradshaw on the French New Wave figure who out-Hitchcocked Hitchcock with his hypocrisy-exposing suspense thrillersFor 30 years after the death of Alfred Hitchcock, the French film-maker Claude Chabrol near single-handedly kept alive a genre that without him might have become a museum piece, like the musical or the western: the icily elegant suspense thriller. The existence of these tense dramas depended largely on a strict set of social codes, a strong sense of order and a buttoned-up bourgeois society within which the idea of crime is unthinkable.Yet the genre's dramatic charge depends not merely on the chill of transgression, but on the realisation that with sufficient ruthlessness, or ingenuity, or social privilege, some crime or psychopathic outrage might be concealed and fester, unseen, for ever.Perhaps it is telling that Hitchcock was an Englishman; Chabrol found something in French society that was highly congenial to the suspense genre, but one of his most well-regarded movies, La Cérémonie (1995), was based on A Judgment In Stone, the 1977 thriller by British author Ruth Rendell. In Chabrol's movie, a housekeeper employed by a wealthy woman is ashamed of her illiteracy, and her friendship with a local woman, played by Isabelle Huppert, propels her towards obsession and violence. The film deals with themes of class, resentment and social tension. Chabrol however, unlike many New Wave contemporaries, deploys these themes in the service of old-fashioned entertainment – albeit with a very sharp edge. For almost 50 years, Chabrol kept up a fiercely disciplined output, directing about one film a year – a testament to the support the French film industry gives to its established masters, and to the remarkable energy and longevity of the New Wave generation of whi

- In praise of … Christopher Nolan | Editorial
Much like Tim Burton, he has showed his ability to break out from well-defined parametersDeja vu? Of course you have, but that is the whole point of a summer season monopolised by sequels and franchise cinema. To go the box office today is to see old favourites dressed up as new: Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, The Karate Kid (remake), Predators (remake). Not so much variations on a theme as electronic music on a loop. If for no other reason, Christopher Nolan's Inception is worthy of note, a high-octane blockbuster which is both original and thought-provoking. Nolan is no stranger to sequels and remakes. Insomnia was a remake of a Norwegian film of the same name, and of course there was Batman Begins. But much like Tim Burton, Nolan showed his ability to break out from well-defined parameters. Nolan's Batman series are not simply comic-book films. Stylistically, they have more in common with Heat and The Usual Suspects than they do with Spider-Man or Iron Man. Nolan has been likened to Stanley Kubrick, only to be knocked back as forced and elephantine. Both the accolades and the brickbats miss the point. In Memento, he toys with the complexities of a thriller shot backwards. In Inception he places a sci-fi heist inside the moving contours of a dreaming mind. The visuals, like the streets of Paris folding in on themselves, fights in zero gravity, or sending a train ploughing through a busy street, are dizzying. But the best moments are human ones, when one character panics with the realisation she could be in the dream of another. Nolan is emerging as a master storyteller.Christopher Nolanguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
