    • Miami massacre: The worst aspect of this horrific killing spree is a lack of public outrage
Even as violent crime drops, America appears to be becoming steadily immune to its frequent mass shootingsBy any measurements it was a horrific crime. Gerardo Regalado, a 38-year-old Floridian, burst into a restaurant in the Miami suburb of Hialeah, and shot his wife dead. Then, ignoring several male potential targets, he proceeded to pump bullets into six more women. Three of them died. The killer then stalked out of the diner and drove a few blocks before killing himself. The awful carnage was caught on videotape by a security camera. It is a terrible thing to watch as the women run through the restaurant pursued by the relentless Regalado who does not hesitate to shoot. But there was one thing the massacre did not catch: the public imagination. The most shocking thing about the Hialeah killings was the collective yawn given to them by the American media. Unlike the British media after the recent massacre in Cumbria, there was no collective national soul-searching. There was no parade of reporters heading to the crime scene from all over the country. It was just another day in America. If newspapers outside Florida carried the story, it was relegated to the inside pages. It seems that America, so often beset by mass shootings and serial killers, is becoming steadily immune to the violence. Neither the public nor the media is especially interested any more. They appear to be subject to a dreadful phenomenon of one-upmanship where only the most dreadful and awful of crimes will now generate significant media attention. After all, if walking into a restaurant and shooting seven women is not enough to generate national news, what is? What does any self-respecting mass killer have to do these days to get attention?Yet, ironically, this is happening in the middle of a nationwi _NULL_

    • Extracts from Raoul Moat's letter to police
Newcastle gunman reportedly wrote to police and the press to explain his story. Here are extracts, as published in the SunAlmost 48 hours after Raoul Moat allegedly embarked on a shooting spree at 2.30am on Saturday, he reportedly called at his friend Andy Mcallister's house and gave him a handwritten letter, explaining that he wanted it passed on to the police and press.Moat had visited Mcallister at around 11.30pm on Saturday, and police had spent most of Sunday interviewing Mcallister after he called to tell them he had seen Moat. Then around 1.30am on Monday, Moat is reported to have returned to deliver the letter to his friend to tell his side of the story, according to the Sun.These are extracts as reported in the Sun today:Last night I called 999 and declared war on Northumbria police before shooting an officer on the West End A69 roundabout in his T5. Sitting there waiting to bully someone. Probably a single mum who couldn't afford her car tax.Rang again and told them they're gonna pay for what they've done to me and Sam. I went straight but they couldn't let it go. The public need not fear me but the police should as I won't stop till I'm dead.On the night 3/7/10 I shot Chris Brown and Samantha Stobbart, after an argument earlier that evening, and here I will make all the facts clear so there is no misunderstanding. They took it all from me, kids, freedom, house, then Sam and Chanel. Where could I go from there? Obviously I have issues but I was pushed. I never beat my kids. I could simply admit to anything now cos it doesn't matter. I'm a killer and a maniac but I ain't no coward.I was terrified of losing Sam, as I knew I'd lose the plot and that, and not wanted to do so stopped me from ever beating her and anyone saying otherwise can go on a lie detector. Now I ニューカッスルの犯人伝え警察にキーを押します彼の話を説明するために書いている

    • Go after the gunrunners | Gus John
You can't legislate for events like the Cumbrian shootings – but you can do something about the illegal weapons in our citiesThere has been much soul-searching since Derrick Bird went on a gun rampage in Cumbria, murdering 12 people. Some commentators have warned, rightly, against the government rushing to legislate in the face of public horror over such incidents. The Cumbria shootings and the public and media reaction to it aptly place into focus the two societies that make up Britain.Yes, the debate is about holders and users of licensed weapons, legally held and legally used, mostly in rural areas such as Cumbria, as opposed to those freely available illegal weapons that are used in urban areas such as London, Manchester and Glasgow. But it is also about crime and where it is expected to be part of the social order and where it is not.On Monday, the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced yet another intervention to stem the rise in youth violence and the number of murders of young people by other young people. Johnson wants to recruit 1,000 mentors to help turn young people away from gangs and youth violence. For the people of Cumbria, traumatised at the scale of the senseless killings around Whitehaven, there is an additional sense of shock that such a heinous crime could be committed in their area, which has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. But for many people, the rural idyll is no longer a guarantee of security; there is no sharp distinction between inner-city, suburban and rural patterns of crime. For several years now, for example, the Thames Valley Police have been dealing with crime perpetrated in rural areas by sometimes armed criminals resident in cities such as Birmingham and London who use the M1, M5, M40, M42 and M6.The government was rig
