There used to be a saying that the English summer was three hot days followed by a thunderstorm. While that may be a pessimistic assessment it seems statistically correct that the most violent storms occur in the coming two months.While many will remember the storm that devastated Boscastle in north Cornwall seven years ago on 16 August, it was the location of the storm and the terrain as well as the volume of rainfall that was the problem. Over four hours 200mm of rain fell in the rocky hills behind the village, causing streams to swell. The water rushed down the valley through the village, flooding 70 properties. Floating cars acted as battering rams destroying bridges.Fifty years earlier a similar storm hit Martinstown in Dorset on 18 July, 1955. This would not be memorable at all except that it holds the official record for the largest one-day rainfall in the UK – 279mm (11ins). The storm came after a hot dry spell and there was some flooding, but not on the scale of Boscastle.The reason was simple, the soil around Martinstown is chalk, not granite, and even with this volume of water a good percentage of the rain soaked directly into the soil. But meteorologists warn that with a warmer climate and more energy in the atmosphere violent storms could get worse. - Use of chemical deicers banned in Moscow residential areas
The new Moscow mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, has banned the use of chemical reagents for tackling ice-slick near the residential areas in winter, local media reported on Wednesday.
According to the decree signed by the mayor, no chemical deicers will be used at bus stops, sidewalks, green parks and residential blocks as of this winter, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

- From the archive, 2 May 1956: Princess's tomb opened after 4,000 years
Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 2 May 1956In the presence of the officials and a large crowd of Egyptian and foreign journalists, Dr Neguib Farag, director of antiquities in Fayum province, opened the sarcophagus of a princess of the XIIth dynasty on the site where he discovered it a year ago. As an occasion it was not to be compared with the great days of Howard Carter 30 years ago, but few of us could be unimpressed by the opening of what had lain closed and sealed for 4,000 years.Before a specially erected carpeted tent, a team of workmen stood at their posts on the scaffolding over the tomb. As soon as the visitors were in place the foreman gave the signal, the workmen began to chant, and by means of a winch the granite lid of the sarcophagus was slowly raised into the air.As the sunlight slid into the widening gap it seemed at first to be an anticlimax. The sarcophagus was full of water, and no jewelled mummy-case appeared; only a few weeds and a vague shape lying on the bottom. But when the lid had been swung aside and the water pumped out, the vague shape identified itself as a vase eighteen inches high, lying on its side and split into two pieces, while all around on the floor of the sarcophagus our eyes caught the glint of gold.Indisputably there was no mummy; but the cartouche on three silver vases previously found by Dr Farag in the same tomb establish that this was the tomb of Princess Neferu Ptah, daughter of King Amenemhat III, whose own tomb was discovered a mile and a half to the north at Hawara in 1882 by Flinders Petrie. Dr Farag's theory is that the Princess was buried in the tomb opened today, and was afterwards reburied in her father's pyramid at Hawara. Pollution from coal-fired power plants is responsible for more than 100,000 deaths per year, whereas the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant is unlikely to kill a single personPeople are getting nervous about nuclear power in the wake of the problems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, questioning whether nuclear power is a sensible option for energy production in light of the perceived risks.It has been three weeks since the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. There have been problems at the Fukushima plant with cooling, gas explosions (not nuclear), and radiation leaks – all serious issues, but so far no one has died. The earthquake and tsunami have killed more than 10,000 people.In fact, the disaster shows how safe nuclear reactors actually are. Reactors designed half a century ago survived an earthquake many times stronger than they were designed to withstand, immediately going into shut-down (bringing driven nuclear reactions to a halt). But the radioactive products in the reactor keep decaying, producing heat, so they must be cooled.The real problems began when the tsunami took out all the back-up generators that were meant to provide power to circulate the coolant. Loss of site power is the worst-case scenario for a nuclear power plant, so for Fukushima this was the worst crisis imaginable. New reactors have improved safety features, including passive systems that allow cooling to take place without power.Radiation leaks are undoubtedly serious. But it is worth remembering that we are subjected to background radiation every day as a result of natural processes – some people more than others. Those living in UK areas with a lot of granite rocks, such as Cornwall, will have higher exposure than those who live somewhere like the Thames Valley. Morning Glory features Ford as Mike Pomeroy, a granite-haired, gravel-larynxed American news anchor who, as a result of a contractual dispute with his network, is forced to become co-host of a viewer-abandoned and critically trashed breakfast TV show at risk of being pulled from the schedules.Unfortunately the crappy format goes under the name Daybreak, for which reason Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley were happy on this occasion to cede the big film-star interview to their BBC1 rivals, and clear ratings-winners, Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams.Revealingly, both the Hollywood script about the fictional Daybreak, and newspaper coverage of the continuing problems at the factual ITV1 show of that name – which feels about as secure as a football manager after four months of defeats – work from the premise that there is something inherently comic about broadcasting at dawn.Although Morning Glory wryly takes its title from a euphemism for an erection, the implication of the film is that breakfast TV has a detumescent effect in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or wherever else it is watched. But the suggestion that a new 'Ka'bah' be constructed in Sinai has ruffled feathersYou wait for a story about Mecca all year and then two come along at once. First it was Egyptian writer and academic Sayyed al-Qimni suggesting Mount Sinai as an affordable religious tourism destination for members of the Abrahamic faiths. Now a Saudi cleric at a Riyadh university has called for the construction of extra floors just for women at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in order to prevent them from mingling with men during tawaf and prayers.I'm no builder but even I realise the latter would require, at the very least, demolition of the Grand Mosque and a temporary shutdown of pilgrimage facilities lasting months, probably years.Qimni's idea – and it is just that – was well-intentioned and he makes several valid points. Not everybody has the finances to perform the hajj, Mount Sinai has special significance in Christianity, Islam and Judaism and the Bedouin have no income. I would also concur with his assertion that there is not much in that neck of the woods except the mount itself, St Catherine's Monastery and the Burning Bush. It might be fruitful, in an economic sense, to develop the area further.Where al-Qimni comes a cropper is his use of the word Ka'bah, which has immediate and almost non-negotiable connotations of a particular granite building in Mecca. The word itself, or so my rudimentary Arabic tells me, means cube or cubic. It could be applied to any similarly-shaped structure but it isn't, because that would be offensive, right?Al-Qimni, who was once described as being more fatal to Islam than Salman Rushdie, is the theological and ideological opposite of Dr Yousuf al-Ahmed, the professor of Islamic jurisprudence at Imam Muhammad イスラム教の聖地をそのまま維持することはできません
