- Line in the sand on taxes | Michael Tomasky
Let us say first that yes, on balance, I probably think that the Bush tax cuts should be repealed for everybody, or nearly everybody. I don't say that lightly, because I understand that a return to the old higher rate - which is a tax increase, at the end of the day - might be hardship for many people. On the other hand, actual dollar amounts for taxpayers at the US median, around $52,000, would be really small. I went to this handy-dandy calculator set up by the Tax Foundation and plugged in a few numbers to see. It will tell you what your tax burden would be if Congress kills all the Bush tax cuts and what it will be if Congress passes the Democratic proposal, which is as we know to increase taxes only on households about $250,000.So for example. Single person at $52,000: no difference under Dem proposal. Married couple with two kids at $80,000: no difference under Dem proposal. But this calculator says the difference would be $2,137 if Congress let all Bush cuts expire. That's a lot of money. More than I thought frankly when I started writing this post. Gives me a little pause. A family of four living on $80,000 is doing fine in many parts of the country, but they are not overwhelmingly comfortable, and $2,100 buys a couple of dental appointments for the kids, a few video games and maybe a night out at the ballgame, all things of value to a family. At the same time, keeping these cuts will cost $3 trillion over a decade. That's a considerable amount of money too. Doing without it puts tremendous pressure on entitlements, for starters, which is exactly what today's Republicans want. They want to get rid of Social Security and Medicare. Only a few of them actually say that, of course, and as soon as they do (Sharron Angle, Joe Miller) some consultant shuttles in to tell t 私たちはまず、はい、バランスに、私はおそらくブッシュ減税は皆、またはほぼすべての人のための廃止すべきだと思います言ってみましょう

- Sarah Palin and the Tea Party - running wild? | Editorial
Is the Tea Party movement going to take over the Republican party, or is the GOP establishment made of firmer stuff?Republicans who see themselves as contenders for the 2012 presidential campaign have yet to declare their hand, defying the trend that the race starts earlier and earlier. Their hesitation in firing the starting gun is as much strategic as political. No one on the right of American politics yet has an answer to the central question dominating their thinking: is the Tea Party movement, which only a year ago was loose and inchoate, going to take over the Republican party, or at least drag it along the tracks to the libertarian right? Or is the GOP establishment made of firmer stuff and about to stage a centrist fightback? Two events this week may provide further indicators. The first is the Republican primary in Delaware tomorrow, where a candidate whom Republicans have branded a fraud and a liar could give the establishment favourite a run for his money. Christine O'Donnell's campaign against the incumbent Mike Castle got a last-minute boost from Sarah Palin, who has been scattering her endorsements like confetti, sometimes to little effect. The race in Delaware has quickly heated up, with O'Donnell denying (but at the same time repeating) a claim that her rival was gay, and Castle putting out an ad alleging that O'Donnell owed income tax, was sued for unpaid bills by a university, and defaulted on her mortgage. If O'Donnell upsets the apple cart, it will be put down, again, to the Palin effect and O'Donnell will be joining the ranks of Sharron Angle in Nevada, Rand Paul in Kentucky and Joe Miller in Alaska in beating establishment candidates. Not all of Palin's picks have been Tea Party candidates. In Arizona she paid her dues back to the man who plucked he 共和党を引き継ぐことになるコーヒー党の動きは、なのか堅いもので作られた共和党の確立である

The election results are in and we know who has won the US midterms 2010. Download the data here• Get the data• Interactive mapAs midterm election results go, this was pretty dramatic as Barack Obama suffered one of the worst Democratic defeats in recent history. The political momentum has swung to the rightwing Tea Party movement, which energised the Republican base and notched up a string of high-profile victories. In midterm election races across America, Republicans pummelled their opponents, capturing the House of Representatives and a fistful of Senate seats. The Democrats, however, held control of the Senate – but with only a slim majority after losing six seats. The party won key races in West Virginia and Nevada, where the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, also pulled off a surprise victory against the Tea Party darling Sharron Angle in in one of the most bitterly fought contests of the campaign. We've been updating our interactive map all night. - Michael Tomasky: Sharron Angle, the hits keep coming
Every day brings a new surprise from Sharron Angle, the tea party/GOP Senate nominee in Nevada. From HuffPo, a recent exchange she had with a conservative radio shot:Manders: I, too, am pro life but I'm also pro choice, do you understand what I mean when I say that. Angle: I'm pro responsible choice. There is choice to abstain choice to do contraception. There are all kind of good choices. Manders: Is there any reason at all for an abortion?Angle: Not in my book.Manders: So, in other words, rape and incest would not be something -Angle: You know, I'm a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things. This is extreme even for America, where most conservatives agree to exceptions in those cases and when the mother's life is at risk.Nevada obviously isn't the most pro-choice state in the union, but this is a position that in recent history has been a little much even for more conservative states. In 2006, South Dakota passed a law banning nearly all abortions. The law was repealed by a voter referendum that fall.Angle's position is apparently even more extreme than South Dakota's, because it did include very limited exceptions. One has to think then that this will cost her, along with the dozens of other wacky positions she's taken, albeit that none of them is quite as unnerving as the idea that incest is part of God's plan.Meanwhile, next door in California, I heard on NPR yesterday that the Golden State has not elected a non-pro-choice senator in 30 years. Carly Fiorina is against abortion rights. You'd think that that alone, even setting aside her dismal record at Hewlett-Packard and sacking by the board, should increase Barbara Boxer 毎日がネバダ州/共和党上院議員候補シャロンアングル、お茶会から新しい驚きをもたらします
- US primaries: Harry Reid shouldn't be smug about Sharron Angle lead | Michael Tomasky
Let's just dive right in. I start my analysis of yesterday's voting across 12 states in Nevada, because what happened there last night sets up what is certain to be one of the most-watched contests of November. The Democratic incumbent will be Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader. And yesterday GOP voters decided to nominate the right-most of three candidates, Sharron Angle, who was the Tea Party movement's preferred candidate. Reid had trailed in polls against all three Republican contenders for a long time, probably as a result of the state's economy and the role he played in passing the healthcare bill, which wasn't popular in this purple state that Barack Obama narrowly carried in 2008.But lately, as voters have gotten a closer look at the Republicans, Reid has gone up in the polls. He surely loves last night's outcome, as Gary Younge noted. There's lot of fodder in some of Angle's positions and associations, such as her support for a radical-right association of law-enforcement officials who take an oath refusing to enforce any laws they deem unconstitutional.Reid shouldn't be smug. He leads Angle only by about six points and he's under 50%. And he's charged with running the Democrats' national agenda in the Senate, which might not always be so popular in his home state. This will be one of the top races in the country this fall, maybe the most closely watched one of all.The second-biggest story from yesterday is out of Arkansas, where Blanche Lincoln held on to defeat an intra-party challenge from Bill Halter. National unions threw $10m at defeating Lincoln, a centrist-conservative Democrat, and a Halter victory was widely expected as of yesterday afternoon. But Lincoln won by four points.Bill Clinton came into his old state hard for Lincoln, and the incumbent al
