    • Chinese tainted baby milk activist won't appeal sentence
Zhao Lianhai, jailed for inciting social disorder, has dismissed lawyers and abandoned hunger strikeA Chinese father whose son was made ill after drinking tainted baby milk and who set up a website to warn other parents about the problem has dropped plans to appeal his two-and-a-half-year jail sentence for inciting public disorder, his former lawyer said today.Activist Zhao Lianhai has dismissed his lawyers in the case, lawyer Peng Jian said. Peng said he was detained and questioned over the weekend by police, who urged him not to file appeal papers on behalf of the activist.Zhao had previously said he would appeal against the Beijing court ruling which found him guilty of inciting social disorder. He began a prison hunger strike in protest. But Peng said Zhao informed him in a handwritten note that he no longer required legal representation. Prison authorities delivered the note and said Zhao was unwilling to meet his lawyer. They told Peng that Zhao had given up his hunger strike and was eating normally.Peng said Zhao's family told him they supported Zhao's decision to drop the appeal.Six children died in 2008 from drinking baby milk contaminated with melamine, and hundreds of thousands were made ill, including Zhao's young son. Melamine, which can cause kidney stones and kidney failure, was added to watered-down baby milk by farmers and dealers to increase profits and to show higher protein levels in tests.Prosecutors said Zhao incited disorder by organising a gathering of affected parents at a restaurant, holding a protest sign in front of a court and a factory involved in the scandal, and giving media interviews in a public place.Peng said he was detained over the weekend for about 48 hours by four police officers, who asked him to respect the court's verdict and

    • Risør chamber music festival – review
Wigmore Hall, LondonEvery summer for 20 years, the pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and violinist Lars Anders Tomter have invited musician friends to join them in a small harbour town in Norway for a busman's holiday. Now, with Andsnes about to step down as director, they have taken the 2010 lineup on tour.Their four-concert Wigmore Hall residency was a mini-festival in its own right. On Sunday, from the two-handed Debussy's Cello Sonata that opened the morning to the closing performance of Honegger's searing Second Symphony, played by a conductorless 22-piece string orchestra, the playing glowed with an easy intimacy. Or – in the case of Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin's exhilarating crash through the two-piano version of The Rite of Spring that Stravinsky made for the Ballet Russes – crackled with gung-ho virtuosity.Several of the highlights showcased Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, whose playing was nothing short of revelatory. Mesmerising in Berg's Four Pieces (Op 5), his constantly inventive eloquence made Mozart's familiar Clarinet Quintet seem quite new.Two works were written especially for Risør. Bent 。ørensen's Schattenlinie brought together Fröst, Andsnes and Tomter for five fragile, beautiful miniatures in which the sonorities of the clarinet, piano and viola were delicately merged, every note carefully chosen. The centrepiece of the evening was Rolf Wallin's Under City Skies, a half-hour work for viola, strings and surround-sound in which Tomter's viola solos and the propulsive orchestral rhythms emerged from disembodied city sounds, mythologising the mundane: high heels clacking on pavement, town hall bells, chirping sparrows, a car ignition. The viola soars but always returns to earth; the work might be a Lark Descending or, Wallin suggests, a grimy fli

    • Bob Woodward up to his old tricks in infiltrating presidencies
Veteran reporter combines journalistic talent with star appeal to gain access to White House regimes and produce bestsellersThis week's fair bet at the bookies: Bob Woodward's latest insider tale from the White House will effortlessly sail its way into the bestsellers list. After all, every one of his past 15 books have done so, a record 11 of them as number one non-fiction bestsellers. How he came to occupy that enviable position is a story of exceptional journalistic ability combined with star power. He began as the other half of the legendary Carl Bernstein-Bob Woodward double act that played a leading part in blowing open the Watergate scandal and evicting President Nixon from the White House. His gargantuan success as an author followed directly from that. The first number one bestseller, and still the best known, was All the President's Men, written with Bernstein and published in the immediate aftermath of Watergate.Woodward's genius has been to turn the celebrity he gained from Watergate – not least Robert Redford's portrayal of him in the film adaptation of the book – into unprecedented political access. Over the past 20 years he has developed his own brand of White House fly-on-the-wall.His initial effort was with the first George Bush presidency, in The Commanders (1991). Bill Clinton got the Woodward treatment in The Agenda (1994) and was said to have been mightily upset by its portrayal of his chaotic administration. The second George Bush had to endure no fewer than four Woodward books. The first two were lambasted by some for being starry-eyed towards the Bush team and for having swallowed spoon-fed material, including erroneous claims about the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, from the likes of Donald Rumsfeld. • National Portrait Gallery launches appeal to keep freed slave's portrait
£100,000 appeal launched to keep 'national treasure' oil painting of African Ayuba Suleiman Diallo in gallery's collectionA portrait of a freed African slave has gone on display for the first time at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) as a £100,000 appeal is launched to keep it in the collection. The bright eyes of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo who had been a slave-owner and trader, are mesmerising gallery visitors, just as they did when he met King George II and leading intellectuals of the 1730s. Diallo translated Arabic documents and inscriptions for Sir Hans Sloane, whose collections would form the basis of the British Museum.NPG director Sandy Nairne described the image – the earliest known British oil painting of a named black man or a freed slave – as a vital acquisition. The portrait was commissioned by William Hoare of Bath at the insistence of Diallo's friends, despite its subject's misgivings as a devout Muslim about having his image painted. It shows Diallo in traditional dress and with a copy of the Qur'an, which he had written from memory in London.Diallo, known in England as Job Ben Solomon, was born around 1701 into a wealthy family of Muslim clerics in Senegambia, west Africa. He was highly educated and spoke several languages including Arabic. He was also a slave-dealer who was captured by a rival tribe and had his beard shaved as a humiliation. Diallo was sold into slavery and transported to a tobacco plantation in Maryland, where he was imprisoned for trying to escape. His plight came to the attention of English lawyer and missionary, Thomas Bluett who brought him to England in 1733, where he became a celebrity. The portrait was sold at a Christie's auction, but its export was barred by the government to give a British museum the chance to buy it. • Michael Tomasky: Intellectual consistency can be overrated
When we write about libertarianism, most liberals feel compelled to say something like, you know, I disagree with that viewpoint, but I respect that it's principled and intellectually consistent.I say balderdookey. Libertarianism is kookoo. There can be no such thing as a basically stateless society (except for national defense and barest administration of law, I think are the exceptions they typically allow for). It's just ridiculous. Civil society would collapse without the state.I've written this before, a few months ago. Conservatives, and libertarians, seem to think that we have regulations in this society because we have a bunch of underemployed pencil pushers sitting around dreaming up ways to make small business people's lives miserable. It's ridiculous. We have regulations because throughout history people in various pursuits did really sleazy and unethical things. They swindled investors, they dumped toxins into bodies of water, they made children work long hours for slave wages. Et cetera. And so laws were passed and regulations were written. And unfortunately such is man's endless capacity for sleaze and unethicality that this process will never end: as technology presents new ways to be sleazy, we'll always need to invent new ways to prevent sleaze from happening.Yes, fine. Some regulations are onerous. Liberals should always be sensitive to legitimate concerns along these lines. But you need a state. Time and history have proven no one else will perform these tasks. So there's nothing in the least inellectually respectable about libertarianism. Intellectually consistent? Great. So was Goebbels. That doesn't mean much to me.We all support a few libertarian-ish principles; we all agree that the state should have some limits. For example, I think it's perfectly f 私たちは約リバタリアニズムを書く、最もリベラル何かのように、あなたが、私は視点に反対するけど、私は尊重してそれが理にかなっている知的consistent.Iはbalderdookeyと答えを得ないと感じる

    • Science Weekly podcast: Brain scans in the theatre; volcanic ash in jet engines
With the help of a neuroscientist, writers Louise Whiteley and Julian Wilkes have written a play about the growing power of brain scans not just to diagnose disease but also to read our minds and predict our behaviour. Who will own our scans and how might they be used to invade the once-private territory of our thoughts? Interior Traces is a radio play performed live on stage, with live musicians and projected videos. It will be touring the UK from 5 to 14 May, with post-show discussions featuring neuroscientists, ethicists and legal thinkers as part of the Identity Project season from the Wellcome Trust. We hear excerpts and Alok Jha talks to the authors about the issues they explore in the play. Their science consultant, neuroscientist Geraint Rees of University College London, joins us in the studio. You can hear more of the play at the Interior Traces website.Robin McKie, science editor of the Observer, and James Randerson, editor of environmentguardian.co.uk, lend us their thoughts. They also chew over what happened at the Guardian's green general election hustings last week, where the party spokesmen spelt out what they propose to do about climate change. Finally, why did it take a week for engineers to get a handle on the relative dangers of volcanic ash to jet engines? Air analyst Chris Yates explains to science correspondent Ian Sample. In the Newsjam, the team discovers that playing brain-training computer games won't make them any smarter; why the UK government should ban the use of manufactured trans fats in food; how a chemical known as MDAI is already replacing the banned recreational drug mephedrone; and a treasure trove of weird and wonderful animals in Borneo.Feel free to post your thoughts below.
