Helen Mirren's role as Prospera in a film of Shakespeare's Tempest underlines a welcome trend towards gender switchToday sees the opening of a pioneering European parliament conference on the state of gender politics in theatre, television and film. Actors Zoe Wanamaker and Harriet Walter have already spoken out about the ways in which it is more profitable to be a male actor, and a report from the International Federation of Actors has provided evidence about the big differences in pay and opportunity. Today's conference is apparently intended to bring federation members together with producers and actors from across Europe to look for an improvement.But there is a novel method of addressing the problem already in train. Film industry pundits have noticed a growing trend for producers to consider changing the gender of a starring part in a new film from male to female, usually as a way to attract a bigger name. Most notably, it has been announced that Dame Helen Mirren will be taking the part of the tactful butler in a remake of Arthur, a role originally graced by Sir John Gielgud in the version that starred Dudley Moore as the eponymous drunk. A commentator in Variety earlier this month wondered whether other female film stars now stood to benefit from this sort of gender switch. Mirren is to leap the gender gap twice on screen, with a role as Prospera rather than Prospero in Julie Taymor's new film of Shakespeare's Tempest.It seems a trick the British stage has missed out on for a while, though. - U.S., EU to further open skies to each other
The United States and the European Union (EU) have struck a sweeping new pact to liberalize air travel across the North Atlantic, the largest market in the world, by eliminating restrictions on foreign ownership and control of airlines, the Chicago Tribune reported on Thursday.
The Open Skies II agreement, which must be approved by the U.S. Congress and European Parliament, would end U.S. rules limiting overseas investors to a 25-percent ownership stake in a U.S. airline.

Restricting unhealthy junk food outlets around schools as recommended by Nice, the health watchdog (Free choice isn't healthy for the food industry's menu, 23 June), is a policy which some brave pioneering councils in London such as Waltham Forest and Tower Hamlets have already adopted. They are trying to reduce childhood obesity and to break up the concentrations of deep-fried chicken and other junk food outlets that have taken such a grip on some of their high streets. The government's reported lack of enthusiasm for this on the grounds of restricting consumer choice is baffling. The assumption that the common agricultural policy (CAP) is a wasteful boondoggle (Rotten but here to stay, 5 July) is at best misguided and at worst misleading. This week, as the European parliament votes on CAP reform post-2013, it is clear that MEPs are coming to a consensus on the ways to tackle entrenched and endemic issues.The report I authored – The Future of the common agricultural policy after 2013 – which sets out these reforms, puts sustainable, fair and green credentials at the heart of the CAP.For the first time, direct support payments to farmers will be linked to efforts to tackle climate change. A reformed and renewed CAP will treat farmers as part of the solution to climate change, not part of the problem. This includes making sure the majority of farmers can join agri-environment schemes, encouraging the development of small-scale renewables and, as your editorial pointed out, creating opportunities to produce carbon sinks from peat bogs.But land management cannot be the only focus of the CAP. In the coming years we face a growing global population, coupled with a substantial increase in demand for food against the backdrop of less land, less water and less energy.Simply scrapping the CAP, as some have suggested, would lead to the demise of food production across vast tracts of poor-quality land in Europe, leading to widespread land abandonment. For many communities, locally sourced food would become a thing of the past. At the same time, food production would intensify on the good-quality land, which could lead to serious environmental degradation.Such an approach would cause untold damage to our landscape, communities and the environment. Perhaps it is safe for gay people to come out as Tories at lastSexuality is not a political virtue: it should be possible to be gay and a Tory and for no one to see a contradiction. The shift began earlier than most people realise: John Major reduced the gay age of consent from 21 to 18. Michael Howard, the man who introduced section 28, went on to lead his party in favour of civil partnerships. But Cameron is the first Tory leader to make a show of his belief in equality, attending last year's gay pride, apologising for section 28 and holding a LGBT reception in Downing Street on becoming prime minister.There are advantages for him in this: it reinforces the idea that the Tories have changed. And counting against Cameron are his questionable alliances in the European parliament and a less than fluent interview with Gay Times just before the election – though it is telling that he gave one at all. But as the police minister Nick Herbert – who is in a civil partnership – argued in a speech earlier this year, many gay people are instinctively right of centre. Media interest in the 'extremism' of the Conservatives' EU allies obscures the issue of disunity within the ECR groupingAs a clutch of stories this weekend showed, no article on the Tories and Europe is now considered complete without at least a nod to the apparent extremism of the other parties involved in their new party group in the European Parliament, the ECR. Although the mud hasn't really stuck, in the sense of impinging on the consciousness of the average voter, it's one of those stories that never quite seems to go away.Yet the way that the media have handled the question – aided and abetted by the politicians themselves – obscures the more fundamental downsides of David Cameron's decision to honour a promise that at least some Conservatives wish he'd never made.As regards the reported phobias of their new allies, we can only say that in parts of central and eastern Europe the conservative-nationalist right is a continuum running from radical to moderate – categories between which there is often more fluidity and overlap than there is in the west. This is almost bound to produce some serious embarrassment. But it is inaccurate to portray the other members of the ECR as extreme rather than mainstream, at least in the context of their own political cultures.As for the more fundamental risks and problems posed to the Conservatives (and to any UK government they may shortly head up), these are unlikely to include Angela Merkel or Nicolas Sarkozy (or even, as some have suggested, Barack Obama) literally cold-shouldering Cameron. National interest, after all, normally triumphs over personal pique.That said, the Tories' decision to set up the ECR is already having practical consequences, most obviously in the European parliament itself. The Ukip MEP is desperately trying to get noticed, and some have risen to his baitNigel Farage is a character in search of an audience. Desperately, even manically so. There's almost nothing the ex-Ukip leader (and still the party's most prominent figurehead) wouldn't do at the moment to get himself noticed and talked about. This week alone he made a well (and in my opinion, rather softly) reported attack on the European council president Herman Van Rompuy, then managed to create so much of a stir on the BBC's Question Time by being extremely rude about Belgium that he managed to unite everyone else on the panel (and quite a lot of the audience) against him.Why is he doing this? Partly because he can. Partly because being rude about foreigners is what comes naturally. Mainly, however, it's because Farage is running for parliament. Farage's decision to take on the Commons Speaker, John Bercow, in Buckingham in the general election may at first sight have seemed rather a smart move – the main parties give the Speaker a free run so the field was wide open. Latterly, however, it must have seemed to Farage that he was on a hiding to nothing, especially since the entry into the Buckingham field of the ex-Tory MEP John Stephens, who is as pro-Europe as Farage is anti.So Farage is engaged in a campaign to get noticed. Perhaps he hopes to emulate the anti-European Tory MEP Daniel Hannan whose denunciation of Gordon Brown in the European parliament became a wonder of the web for a while. But what he really wants is to get on the telly as much as possible. Nothing would please him more than to be suspended from the European parliament by its president Jerzy Buzek, who has summoned Farage for a stern talk about his behaviour.There's a dilemma here.
