- The Rev Canon Roy Flatt
A jazz musician may be an unusual role model for a man of the cloth, but my friend the Rev Canon Roy Flatt, who has died of cancer aged 63, was no ordinary clergyman. He had seen the double-bassist Ron Carter play at a club and was taken with the way the musician led from the back. When he was appointed dean in the Scottish Episcopal diocese of Argyll & the Isles, in 1999, Roy was asked what his style of leadership would be. He didn't miss a beat: Ron Carter's, he said.Born in Bury St Edmunds, he studied at the town's King Edward VI school and Strathclyde University. By the age of 19 he was a branch librarian in Crieff, where he also became the director of the highland gathering in the 1970s. In 1978 he married Andrina Ferguson, a fellow librarian.He was ordained as a priest at St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, in 1981. Two years later, he moved to Argyll, where he became rector at Christ Church, Lochgilphead, and St Columba's, Poltalloch. He was priest-in-charge of All Saints, Inveraray, from 1983 and honorary canon at St John's Cathedral, Oban, from 2006.Roy's deafness led him to become a no-nonsense champion of people with disabilities. He was an active member of many NHS and care committees, and helped to establish dance and drama groups for people with mental health issues. He was committed to every campaign he undertook, whether it was to restore a medieval carved stone cross, support vulnerable young Zambians, or create new stained-glass windows at Christ Church. He led the bid for lottery funding for the Mid Argyll Local Heroes Project. This gave rise to many continuing ventures, including the now widely admired annual fundraising Lantern festival in Lochgilphead. Roy wasn't just a pen-pusher, filling out funding application forms. Two sites in Kowloon peninsula, Hong Kong, have been triggered for sale under the Application List System and an auction will be held on Aug. 17, according to local government website on Wednesday.

In Haiti, the United Nations says thousands of people are believed to have been killed in a 7-magnitude earthquake.
