- From the archive, 2 May 1956: Princess's tomb opened after 4,000 years
Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 2 May 1956In the presence of the officials and a large crowd of Egyptian and foreign journalists, Dr Neguib Farag, director of antiquities in Fayum province, opened the sarcophagus of a princess of the XIIth dynasty on the site where he discovered it a year ago. As an occasion it was not to be compared with the great days of Howard Carter 30 years ago, but few of us could be unimpressed by the opening of what had lain closed and sealed for 4,000 years.Before a specially erected carpeted tent, a team of workmen stood at their posts on the scaffolding over the tomb. As soon as the visitors were in place the foreman gave the signal, the workmen began to chant, and by means of a winch the granite lid of the sarcophagus was slowly raised into the air.As the sunlight slid into the widening gap it seemed at first to be an anticlimax. The sarcophagus was full of water, and no jewelled mummy-case appeared; only a few weeds and a vague shape lying on the bottom. But when the lid had been swung aside and the water pumped out, the vague shape identified itself as a vase eighteen inches high, lying on its side and split into two pieces, while all around on the floor of the sarcophagus our eyes caught the glint of gold.Indisputably there was no mummy; but the cartouche on three silver vases previously found by Dr Farag in the same tomb establish that this was the tomb of Princess Neferu Ptah, daughter of King Amenemhat III, whose own tomb was discovered a mile and a half to the north at Hawara in 1882 by Flinders Petrie. Dr Farag's theory is that the Princess was buried in the tomb opened today, and was afterwards reburied in her father's pyramid at Hawara. Ancient chants and rap music intermingle as modern technology plays a part in preserving the pastThe ancient keening chant for the dead that has been a feature of Tikopian life for centuries contrasts with the loud rap music from the party next door. Tikopia is a tiny, isolated Polynesian island far from the capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara, where we are. Many of the younger people present have never been there, but they still follow their elders in combining ritual and real wailing whenever someone dies. The ritual nature is shown by the ease with which people resume normal conversation, chew the mildly intoxicating betel nut, listen to their MP3 players or talk on mobile phones as soon as the chanting stops.This blend of ancient and modern technology is re-emphasised by the setting. We are far from the coral lagoon and coconut palms of Tikopia, in a house sitting rather precariously on a narrow ledge cut out of one of Honiara's steep crowded valleys. The house is a mixture of traditional sago palm leaf and coconut matting with corrugated iron roof and electric light. The mourning feast is also a mixture of food cooked in a traditional stone oven and that bought in the local supermarket. It starts with a Christian prayer but ends with traditional dance songs accompanied by a wooden drum.When this is finished some people turn on the television to catch the rugby sevens from New Zealand. Others sit and listen to a playback of the chanting and traditional songs recorded on someone's mobile phone.This mixture of ancient ritual and modern technology is common here. Traditional culture is still the basis of the ceremony now, but what of future generations? One question emerging from the publication of Dick Marty's report (Kosovo's PM 'controls illegal trade in organs', 15 December) is why has it take so long to produce. Perhaps because the US and her allies knew about the allegations, but for the sake of stability wanted to ignore them.But the real problem in Kosovo is not the Kosovo government. It is the presence of so many international organisations which together conspire to prevent change. The list would include the International Civilian Office, the European Rule of Law Mission, the UN ission in Kosovo, the UN protection force supplied by Nato, Unicef, UNHCR, the World Bank, the European commission, and western embassies with their pet projects. After 11 years there is still no real market in Kosovo; there is much poverty, and unemployment is officially at 40% – probably much higher. Minorities – like the Bosniaks and Turks – are segregated and marginalised.I run a small NGO involved in mediation between the Serbs in the historic monasteries of Pec and Decani and the local Kosovo Albanian municipalities. Both parties have indicated their willingness to talk. Trying to get even the most modest resources together for this work is almost impossible. The reason is simply that, in spite of all the rhetoric, the desire to keep the status quo is a priority. Opera singer and music educationist behind the Great Elm festival in SomersetThe mezzo-soprano Maureen Lehane, who has died aged 78, graced the stages of Europe and America for little more than two decades, though she was a firm favourite with both critics and audiences during that period, especially in Handelian opera. After her early retirement in the late 1970s, she put her formidable talents and energies to use in the field of music education via the Jackdaws Music Education Trust, which in turn evolved out of the Great Elm music festival, near Frome, Somerset, founded by Lehane in memory of her husband, Peter Wishart, in 1986. The vocal awards established by the festival have been won by singers of the calibre of Kate Royal, Christopher Maltman and Amanda Echalaz, while outreach projects have enriched the lives of countless youngsters in the locality.Born in London, Lehane attended Queen Elizabeth's grammar school for girls in Barnet, where the music teacher, of the opinion that she had not got much of a voice, ejected Lehane from the choir. Not discouraged, she went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music, London, and in Berlin, emerging as a singer of note in the mid-1950s, though it was not until 1967 that she made her Glyndebourne debut as Melide in Cavalli's L'Ormindo.
