    • Blake Edwards obituary
Film director best known for the Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany's and 10The film-maker Blake Edwards, who has died aged 88, will be best remembered as the creator of the Pink Panther films, and as the husband of the entertainer Julie Andrews. But Edwards was a third-generation show-business figure whose complex and controversial career spanned more than 50 years, initially as an actor and writer and subsequently as one of America's most prolific producer-directors, primarily concerned with the popular genres of comedy and musicals and with creating television series.Despite working in mainstream cinema, his maverick spirit and ego made him an uneasy partner with Hollywood studios. He famously savaged the hand that had fed him so well with S.O.B. (1981), a raucous, vitriolic attack on Tinseltown. His sophisticated work drew strongly on his love of early cinema (his stepgrandfather had directed silent films), and on his own life and psychological problems (he wrote two movies with his psychoanalyst, Milton Wexler). He also reworked his own films and remade those of other directors.Edwards was born William Blake Crump in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents divorced when he was young and he moved to Los Angeles with his mother. He began work as an extra, partly thanks to his stepfather, Jack McEdward, a film production manager. During his early 20s he appeared in some decent movies, including A Guy Named Joe (1943), which gave him income and time to write. He created a radio series, Richard Diamond: Private Detective, for Dick Powell in 1948, and that year also wrote and starred in a modest western, Panhandle. He followed this with the screenplay for another western, Stampede (1949), and then concentrated on screenplays for the actor-turned-directo

I'm going on a brief vacation in the near future, to the beach, and I beseech all of you on two points:1. Tell me a new novel I should buy and take with me.2. Recommend some DVDs that meet the following criteria: a, must be suitable for viewing by a 15-year-old young lady, my niece; b, older fare preferred, i.e. 1970s on back; c, nothing on either the first or second or arguably even third tier of obviousness, because among the lot of us we've seen lots of things, especially by the major directors; d, comedy preferred, drama fine, musical fine too (this crowd loves a good musical, in fact, but we've seen most of them, so you'll have to put your thinking cap on); e, no westerns, for reasons previously bruited. I won't be getting my usual Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy Talking Points delivered to my inbox while on vacation, so I'll need something else to do. Ha ha. That was a joke, people. • Brazil! Brazil! | Dance review
Southbank Udderbelly, LondonThe back story to Brazil! Brazil! is a show in itself. Not only have some of its cast overcome childhoods in the grimmest favelas to become professional dancers and musicians, but they now work on projects to help those they've left behind – teaching dance skills in the streets, offering any kid who hands in a gun a musical instrument in return. But the reasons to like this production are all on stage, in the daredevilry and skill of its five male dancers and in the pumped-up party energy that flares between them and their band.Capoeira, the martial arts form, is one of the main threads running through this 70-minute showcase of hot Brazilian moves – its wheeling kicks and elegantly poised balances presented both as virtuoso dance and as furious mock battle. But in response to the music, the dancers segue naturally on to hip-swivelling samba and traditional battle dance. They let fly acrobatic routines whose insouciant ferocity threatens to explode out of the cramped Udderbelly stage. During one tight and impossibly fast circle of flips, dancer Ananias da Bahia appears to be rotating on a pin head. But even Bahia's skill is outflanked by the modest, lanky freestyle footballer Arthur Mansilla, whose ball control should make the England squad weep. You look in vain for a wire attaching the ball to him, as standing up or lying down Mansilla trickles it around every surface of his body, or taps it from one foot to the other while his legs are busy tracing perfect figures of eight.Toby Gough directs with the lightest of touches. If sometimes that touch seems too light, resulting in a few too many raw musical edges and fumbled choreographic ideas, the performers' nerve and charm carry everything before them.Until 18 July. • Barack Obama appoints William Daley as chief of staff
Recruitment of William Daley, a JP Morgan Chase executive for seven years, lends White House a more business-friendly faceBarack Obama has begun an overhaul of his inner circle, lending the White House a more business-friendly face with the appointment of an outsider banker, William Daley, as his chief of staff.Daley continues the heavy Chicago bent of Obama's White House. He is a son of the legendary Chicago mayor Richard Daley and brother of the city's outgoing mayor, also named Richard. But he marks a departure for the president after two years in office by dint of his considerable Wall Street experience. The new chief of staff has for the past seven years been a senior executive at JP Morgan Chase, and before that worked for a hedge fund and in telecoms. He straddles the business-politics divide, having been Bill Clinton's commerce secretary for three years from 1997 and managed Al Gore's failed run for the presidency in 2000.Daley's appointment was seen as a signal of Obama's intention to change political tack after receiving a drubbing in the midterm elections in November. The president now faces a resurgent Republican party which on Wednesday took control of the House of Representatives.Daly, who brings with him an outsider's perspective and minimal ideological baggage, may help Obama to bridge the party divide more successfully than he has to date.Speculation about Daley's appointment was rife since he made a quiet visit to the White House yesterday. Several news outlets reported that the job had been offered and accepted. The chief of staff position is the highest profile in a number of posts to be filled as Obama works his way through a post-midterm round of musical chairs. • Theresienstadt weekend | Classical review
Wigmore Hall, LondonThe greatest musical experiences radically alter our perspectives. This was very much the case with the Nash Ensemble's Theresienstadt weekend. Concerts, films, talks and exhibitions examined the extraordinary cultural flowering in the ghetto-camp near Prague, set up by the Nazis in 1941, where, among thousands of others, the Czech-Jewish intelligentsia were held before transportation to death camps. The event's force lay in its broadening of our contextual awareness, and in its revelation of the quality of the work produced.Paintings and drawings by children, unflinching witnesses to history, hung on the walls of the Wigmore's subterranean Bechstein room. Three extraordinary women – an actor, a painter and a singer – spoke with wise eloquence of surviving both Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. Creativity was an existential affirmation of life, though traditions died along with people. Krása and Pavel Haas, Janáček's rightful successors, were murdered in the gas chambers. The ironies of Weimar Republic cabaret were kept alive, for a while, in bittersweet songs by Adolf Strauss and Otto Skute。ky.Many works were outright masterpieces. Haas's Four Songs on Chinese Poetry, Erwin Schulhoff's Duo for Violin and Cello, and above all Krása's Passacaglia and Fuga and his Rimbaud settings for baritone, clarinet, viola and cello belong in the regular repertory, irrespective of the circumstances of their composition. The Nash, an ensemble of stars, played with great technical power and depth of feeling. The singer was Wolfgang Holzmair, richly expressive, if overly score-bound. The Nash should tour this internationally – it deserves to be heard around the world.Rating: 5/5Classical musicHolocaustTim Ashleyguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Lim ウィグモアホール、LondonThe最大の音楽の経験が根本的に自分たちの視点を変更します

    • Bidisha's Thought for the Day: Burma on film
Aung San Suu Kyi's life is to be made into a Hollywood film, with Crouching Tiger star Michelle Yeoh in the lead. Any other great women we could trivialise on film?Film fans, are you ready for the latest kung fu flick, Crouching Dictatorship, Hidden Profit? Among the admiring tributes to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese democratic leader who's finally been released from house arrest, a perky news item reflected the film industry's unstintingly profound approach. Hong Kong action heroine and martial arts expert Michelle Yeoh is going to star in a biopic of Aung San Suu Kyi's life.Yes, that's what we need. Not electoral transparency, the rule of law and international political accountability. We need Yeoh, star of Ang Lee's balletic fightfest Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, in a thigh-toning allegorical tribute with great costumes. No doubt, in the film, as soon as those daft BBC World news cameras are done briefly reporting her plight, she'll toss aside her dull tomes of history and law. Then she'll take off most of her clothes and meditate exotically for a moment (watered-down Buddhism plays well with a western audience) before kicking and chopping her way around the house in Rocky-like anticipation of the final confrontation with her jailers. Which will be filmed, of course, outside, in the rain, in slow motion.I tell you what, let's have more women trivialised on film. We can call it the Martyrs' Cabaret. The general theme would be one of strong, real women turned into sad symbols of suffering, played by actors more beautiful, younger and less intelligent than they are. I'd favour a bittersweet if ultimately blood-spattered musical starring Meera Syal as Benazir Bhutto. A Catherine Cookson weepie with Julia Davis as Princess Diana. • Oops, we forgot Jesus's women | Stephen Tomkins
The pope's new book, The Friends of Jesus, doesn't mention any of his female associates. It's a telling omissionWas it a hilarious howler or does he simply not like women? The pope's new children's book, The Friends of Jesus, tells the stories of 14 of Jesus's closest friends, but omitted to include any women, despite Jesus's celebrated friendship with several of the less Catholic sex, especially Mary Magdalene. On the plus side, there is something refreshing about the Vatican's attitude to PR and spin, which is either that they are the machinations of Beelzebub, or they simply haven't heard of them yet. You can't imagine the head of any other west European state publishing a book without teams of Malcolm Tuckers scribbling all over it in red marker pens to bring it on-message.Benedict may not be a law unto himself exactly, but he clearly doesn't have his work shredded by a filter of tick boxes. One of the many benefits of not needing anyone's votes ever again. We saw the same thing earlier this year when the Vatican newspaper published a list of the 10 greatest albums ever, all long hair and guitar solos. No inclusivity, no internationalism, no coolness, and outside of Fleetwood Mac, what do you know, not a single woman. It was clearly not a PR exercise, just a bunch of stuff that some old duffer in the Vatican actually liked. But when you get past the retro charm of Rome's attitude to inclusion, it reminds you that there was and is a point to political correctness, which is that it discourages people from being ignorant idiots. Musical lists are a harmless enough pursuit, but the attitudes of world religions to sex and the sexes is rather less harmless. Top 10 albums are one thing, but when Rome compiles lists of the top one sex, the exclusion bites rather deeper.Inclusi 法王の新しい本は、友達イエスの、いずれかの彼の女性の仲間の言及していない

    • I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky | Theatre review
Theatre Royal Stratford East, LondonJohn Adams, the contemporary composer whose works include Nixon in China and The Death of Klinghoffer, believes that the Broadway musical is art, not just entertainment. So it's intriguing to see his 1995 song play, which takes its title from a comment made by a survivor of the 1994 Californian earthquake, being treated as musical theatre by a Theatre Royal team that is tirelessly probing what a musical can be in the 21st century. Alas, it's no West Side Story, even though it touches upon issues of racial conflict and persecution of immigrants. It's the tremors of the heart and the faultlines that run through society rather than geology that are under consideration as former gang leader Dewain is arrested by LAPD cop Mike and faces a return to jail. But public defender, Rick, the son of Vietnamese boat people, is determined to get him off, despite antagonism from newsreporter Tiffany. Throw in a romance between a womanising preacher, David, and his reluctant love, Leila, and the stage is set for some seismic upheavals.Or it should be. It's easy to see why in 1995 some turned up their noses at a score that owes more to pop than contemporary music, but several of the songs display the tunefulness and natural, move-the-story-on drama that any good musical number requires. They are well sung, too, by a game cast. But the tediously earnest book and lyrics lack narrative clarity and impetus, and the production never finds a way to match the impressionistic restless quality of the score with something as visually expressive. You keep wondering why these people are gazing at their navels and singing rather than offering first aid. About 2.5 on the Richter scale. Until 17 July. • Claude Chabrol anatomised the French middle class with a twist of the scalpel
Peter Bradshaw on the French New Wave figure who out-Hitchcocked Hitchcock with his hypocrisy-exposing suspense thrillersFor 30 years after the death of Alfred Hitchcock, the French film-maker Claude Chabrol near single-handedly kept alive a genre that without him might have become a museum piece, like the musical or the western: the icily elegant suspense thriller. The existence of these tense dramas depended largely on a strict set of social codes, a strong sense of order and a buttoned-up bourgeois society within which the idea of crime is unthinkable.Yet the genre's dramatic charge depends not merely on the chill of transgression, but on the realisation that with sufficient ruthlessness, or ingenuity, or social privilege, some crime or psychopathic outrage might be concealed and fester, unseen, for ever.Perhaps it is telling that Hitchcock was an Englishman; Chabrol found something in French society that was highly congenial to the suspense genre, but one of his most well-regarded movies, La Cérémonie (1995), was based on A Judgment In Stone, the 1977 thriller by British author Ruth Rendell. In Chabrol's movie, a housekeeper employed by a wealthy woman is ashamed of her illiteracy, and her friendship with a local woman, played by Isabelle Huppert, propels her towards obsession and violence. The film deals with themes of class, resentment and social tension. Chabrol however, unlike many New Wave contemporaries, deploys these themes in the service of old-fashioned entertainment – albeit with a very sharp edge. For almost 50 years, Chabrol kept up a fiercely disciplined output, directing about one film a year – a testament to the support the French film industry gives to its established masters, and to the remarkable energy and longevity of the New Wave generation of whi

    • Havana Cultura Live | World music review
Barbican, LondonIt's a familiar challenge: how do you turn a multi-artist concept album into a coherent live event? Too many individuals and it becomes too bitty; too few and it can lose the grand idea that made it work in the first place. In the case of Gilles Peterson presents Havana Cultura, the concept was to feature the new sound of Cuba. At the heart of the project is musical director and virtuoso pianist Roberto Fonseca. The double album, which comprises a new studio disc coupled with a 16-track compilation, embraces more than a dozen flavours of style and rhythm, and many different artists. In performance, DJ and taste-maker Peterson stands to one side of his 10-piece band, occasionally twiddling knobs or triggering beats from a portable console. On record, Peterson and his team seem to have the final cut; in concert it is Fonseca who dominates, revealing the creative tension between the pianist's world-jazz ambitions and Peterson's more populist, inclusive approach. Fonseca's predilection for ultrafast, dazzling pianism means that mid-tempo pop songs unexpectedly mutate into finger-busting virtuosity. And his regular quintet is much tighter than the full lineup, which includes genial rappers Ogguere.Peterson sets the pace for certain numbers, mixing in samples, atmospheres and field recordings, or triggering a thumping four-on-the-floor kick drum. But the lineup lacks the electronic resources and flexibility of musicians such as Gotan Project or Matthew Herbert, or the hardcore appeal of the new Havana Cultura Remixed album, which features engaging reinventions by Louie Vega, Seiji and 4Hero, among others.Nevertheless the concert was terrific in parts, and featured young Cuban singer Danay Suárez Fernández on several numbers, including Think Twice and la バービカンは、LondonIt馴染みの挑戦をだ:どのように首尾一貫したライブイベントにマルチアーティストコンセプトアルバムに向けるのですか?あまりにも多くの人々、それはあまりにも断片的になります

    • Frank Frazetta obituary
A prolific painter of fantasies that adorned book covers, film posters and rock LPsFrank Frazetta, who has died of complications following a stroke, aged 82, was a creator of fantasy illustrations, his muscular, bloodied heroes and shapely heroines inspiring and influencing later generations of artists. His covers lured readers into the worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Venus and Mars and below the Earth's surface to Pellucidar with Burroughs's most famous creation, Tarzan. His book covers were key to the revival of interest in the works of Robert E Howard, whose mythic warrior Conan was depicted by Frazetta in the 1960s. Arnold Schwarzenegger played the character twice in the 1980s.Very few of Frazetta's original paintings were sold in his lifetime and intense bidding surrounded those that came on to the market. In 2008, his cover for Burroughs's Escape On Venus sold at auction for $251,000. A year later, the Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett purchased the artwork for the 1967 cover to Howard's Conan the Conqueror for $1m.Brooding, thunderous skies and screaming hordes of demons were just one side of Frazetta's work. His movie posters – among them the comedy What's New Pussycat? (1965) and the musical The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968) – exhibited his more humorous side, developed during almost two decades of drawing comic strips, including a period on Al Capp's lighthearted Li'l Abner, which was syndicated to 400 newspapers.Born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Alfred and Mary Frazzetta, (he later dropped one z), at the age of eight he was enrolled at the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts and studied under the Italian artist Michael Falanga. • Justin Bieber: what if he did tour North Korea?
A viral campaign has proposed sending Justin Bieber on a tour of North Korea. But what can he expect in a country with just one nightclub? And will he return in one piece? Now that web democracy has spoken and the internet's viral masses have chosen to send Justin Bieber to North Korea, perhaps some of us are putting our feet up thinking the hard work is done. The irritating pop whippet will soon be performing his melancholy ballads in prisoners' garb on a rock-chipping line, to an audience made up of the North Korean World Cup goalie and whoever has recently displeased Dear Leader Kim Jong Il.Well, don't get carried away because if Bieber did make it to North Korea, the reality wouldn't be quite as exciting. As a recent visitor to the country, I learned that one of the ways the hermit kingdom maintains its isolationist policies at a cultural level is by the sophisticated manipulation of its international visitors. To the outside world, North Korea appears to welcome the odd western influence, such as when they invited the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to perform in Pyongyang in 2008. While we might be tempted to read such an occasion as a positive cultural exchange, it's more likely the event was spun 180 degrees for North Koreans, who – if they heard about it at all – would have been told something more along the lines that America sent the musical convoy to pacify the Big Bad Leader Kim with their meagre tributes.I remember reading a similar spin tactic in the Pyongyang Times on a flight into the capital last year, on the day after Bill Clinton's reconnaissance trip to free the two imprisoned US journalists caught trespassing at the border. The Korean press made no mention of the real purpose of Clinton's visit, only reporting that he bowed deeply to General Kim and ウイルスキャンペーンは、北朝鮮のツアーでジャスティンビーバーを送る提案している

    • Ole Schmidt obituary
Danish composer and conductor with a reputation for championing the unfamiliarAlthough he was best known as a conductor, Ole Schmidt, who has died aged 81, first came to public notice in his native Denmark as a composer of ballets, composing three in fairly rapid succession in the 1950s: The Fire-maker (Ildmageren, 1952), Behind the Curtain (Bag 。æppet, 1954) and Fever (Feber, 1957). Schmidt's outstanding talent on the conductor's rostrum – he had studied with Sergiu Celibidache and Rafael Kubelik – was showcased at the premiere of the third of these and the following year he took up the post of conductor at Copenhagen's Royal theatre, which he relinquished only in 1965.Following posts with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (1969-70) and the Danish Radio Sinfonietta (1971-73), Schmidt made the leap to international prominence as a conductor in 1974 when he recorded the six Nielsen symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra for the London-based record label Unicorn. These revelatory recordings, much reissued and still available, remain the benchmark for all later Nielsen cycles and won the Carl Nielsen prize in 1975.Engagements from around the world, the UK and North America not least, raised his profile further: he became principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in Denmark (1978-85) and later was permanent guest conductor of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and principal guest conductor of the Toledo Symphony in Ohio. However, Schmidt followed his own unconventional, maverick star, maintaining a reputation as a champion of the unfamiliar. In Britain this was shown by his 1980 performance with 800 musicians of Havergal Brian's first symphony, The Gothic (at the instigation of his composer friend, Robert Simpson, musical adviser on the Nielsen

    • Dave Fisher obituary
Singer and arranger with the US folk group the HighwaymenDave Fisher, who has died of a bone marrow disease aged 69, was the lead singer, guitarist and musical director of the US folk group the Highwaymen, who enjoyed chart success in 1961 with the songs Michael, Row the Boat Ashore and The Gypsy Rover. The group veered towards the entertainment wing of the folk boom in early 1960s America, featuring few politically radical songs. They therefore failed to survive the change in popular music during the British invasion of pop groups led by the Beatles. In any case, group members were anxious to pursue other careers, although Fisher continued to work in the music industry. For the past two decades, with Fisher at the helm, the Highwaymen enjoyed regular reunion concerts.Fisher was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and at high school sang with a doo-wop group, the Academics. In 1958, at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, he formed a folk music group, the Clansmen, with fellow students. By the following year, they had a recording contract from United Artists and a manager, Ken Greengrass, who suggested a change in name. The youngsters had been unaware of the political implications of a name that appeared to ally them with the Ku Klux Klan, and a new name, the Highwaymen, was chosen, after the title of a 1906 poem by Alfred Noyes.Their eponymous first album was released in 1960, but sold few copies. A similar fate befell a single, Santiano, and United Artists dropped the group. But an independent distributor in Connecticut pushed the single's B side, Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, renamed simply Michael, and persuaded radio DJs to play it. By the summer of 1961, it had reached No 1 in the US, Britain and 20 other countries.
