    • Dr Luisa Dillner's guide to . . . fear of flying
Some people are more anxious than others, but a turbulent flight can trigger a fear of flyingI've always thought it was normal to be scared of flying. You're stuck in a confined metal tube, thousands of feet in the air and someone you have never met before is driving. What is there not to be scared about? What is fear of flying?A phobia is defined as when the fear is disproportionate to the risk. Richard Conway, director of Virgin Atlantic's Flying Without Fear programme, says there are three core fears; fear of the fear itself, claustrophobia and fear of loss of control. Children can also be afraid of flying. What causes it?Some people are generally more anxious than others. But a single, turbulent flight can trigger a fear of flying, as can media reports of air crashes or acts of terrorism, the prominence of which can make the risk seem disproportionately large. What are the symptoms? You may feel anxious just thinking about flying, or experience fear more intensely for a few days or hours before your flight. Symptoms are those of anxiety and the fear of having a panic attack. A sensation of your heart thumping, breathing rapidly as if you can't get your breath, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and diarrhoea, a dry mouth and a sense of impending doom are typical. What can I do to stop being frightened?Conway believes knowledge is power. Learning about how aircraft fly can remove your fear; the odds of engine failure are millions to one and it is virtually impossible for two engines to go. Hypnotherapy is also cited as a therapy. Arrive at the airport in good time; sit down and eat something and listen to music or whatever relaxes you. It's fine to have one alcoholic drink before you fly. Minor tranquillisers may help some people with some symptoms but won't treat the 一部の人は他よりも不安ですが、乱流のフライトは、常にそれは通常の飛行の怖がるようなことだと思ったflyingI。。u0026#39;veの恐怖を引き起こすことができます

    • Keeping the eurozone afloat | Claus Vistesen
Never mind the blame game, the EU needs to find a mechanism for handling economies that are close to defaultIf the current financial and economic turmoil has its origins in the US economy and its subprime mortgage debacle, most economists would now agree that its locus has slowly but surely moved to the EU and the eurozone. Specifically, the market's attention has zoomed in on the weaker members of the pack in the form of Greece, Spain and Ireland. Most recently, the situation in Greece and Spain has been the centre of attention and, especially in relation to Greece, the pressure has been mounting. The country now faces a tough administered reform package either pushed through by the EU or the IMF, its only alternative being an outright default that would have grave consequences not only for Greece, but also for the eurozone and the EU.In principle, however, none of the eurozone economies are in stellar economic form, but some are definitely in worse shape than others. For Greece and Spain the situation is simple. Years of above-average increases in inflation and wages have eroded competitiveness and produced large current account deficits. Coupled with ongoing budget deficits (to a lesser extent in Spain) this means that these economies have little or no defence against the adverse effects of a global financial crisis. However, this is not only about Greece and Spain. Portugal has the same symptoms as its southern European brethren. In particular, worries in the market point towards the fact that as the budget deficit in 2009 and 2010 is set to climb to close to 10% of national income and with a current account deficit in the region of 9% of GDP, Portugal may soon face the same headwinds as Greece as it tries to put its government bonds on the market in a grand scale. The _NULL_

    • North pole marathon due to begin: racers to run 26 miles on ice at -30C
Two blind former servicemen, an aerospace engineer and a BBC reporter are among the 26 snow junkies and fitness freaks who were due to begin competing in the world's coldest race, the north pole marathon. The start of this year's race was delayed by over nine hours due to bad weather. Braving temperatures of below -30C, contestants plan to run on ice for the entirety of the 26.2-mile course – 10 laps around the geographic north pole. For Jamie Cuthbertson, a 49-year-old former Royal Engineers captain, it is the challenge of a lifetime. He lost his sight in 1986 when a box containing 100 explosives detonated near his face. Cuthbertson, accompanied by his guide Alex Pavanello, is raising money for the charity St Dunstan's, where he completed a rehabilitation programme. This Arctic marathon, the seventh so far, is the brainchild of Richard Donovan, the holder of a Guinness world record for treadmill running. Donovan was the first person to complete seven marathons on seven different continents in under seven days, and the first to run a marathon at both poles. His company Polar Running Adventures also organises the Antarctic ice marathon.Mike Scholes, a former navy pilot who also lost his sight, is taking part, along with Arnold Oliphant and his daughter Sarah, from California, Paddy Clark, the 64-year-old BBC World Service reporter, and Brent Underdahl, a Canadian who is running dressed as Santa Claus.ArcticRunningguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Greece faces devaluation, default, or deflation. Next stop the IMF | Larry Elliott
Greece left isolated and vulnerable to markets by German refusal to pay for Athenian errorsWe feel your pain. But not enough to put our hands in our pockets to help you. Behind the sham show of solidarity, the simple message for the troubled government of George Papandreou was that Greece is not Alabama and Brussels is not Washington. In the United States, the federal budget is worth around 25% of national output each year. States where the economy is booming pay more in tax receipts to the Treasury than they take out in spending. Poor states receive more from Washington than they raise in taxes. The sun belt subsidises the rust belt.Europe has no such mechanism. Brussels does have a budget, but it is tiny in comparison with Washington's at little more than 1% of Europe's GDP. Money is redistributed from the rich core to the poorer periphery, but on a much smaller scale than on the other side of the Atlantic. The fact that there is monetary union but no fiscal union helps explain why Greece is no nearer a solution to its problems today than it was yesterday. Lacking a centralised budgetary mechanism, the only way out for Papandreou would be if the Germans were prepared to play the role of Good Samaritan or if Brussels could come up with an innovative way of raising funds.Neither option looked likely yesterday. The Germans insisted on the no bailout clause as the price of signing up for monetary union in the first place, and are telling the Greeks to take their medicine. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, would find it hard to explain to the citizens of Berlin or Cologne, who have to work until they are 67, why they should put their hands in their pockets to prevent the Greek retirement age going up from 61 to 63.The idea of floating European investment bonds has been ギリシャ分離左と市場への脆弱性がドイツ語を拒否アテナイerrorsWeためのあなたの痛みを感じる支払うことによる
