- Guardian Election Daily: David Cameron's fix for 'broken Britain'
Both Labour and the Conservatives chose to focus on equality, social justice and crime today – key issues for many voters. We followed David Cameron as he made a speech to the right-leaning Centre For Social Justice, set up by the former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith. The former EastEnders actor Brook Kinsella, whose 16-year-old brother, Ben, was murdered in 2008, was also on the panel. She has been given an advisory role by the Tories but says she is not a party political figure.Duncan Smith tells us he is pleased with the reception his ideas are getting at Conservative HQ, but adds that there is still plenty of work to do. Meanwhile, some of today's audience members, including charity workers, volunteers and church officials, remain to be convinced that they can effectively do the work of the state. And on the thorny issue of crime statistics (two conflicting sets were publicised today), Alan Travis gives us a reality check on who to believe.Elsewhere, at a lively Labour press conference, Peter Mandelson and Ed Balls criticised the media for focusing too little on the 'big isssues'. And in Brighton, the Green party's top target seat, Jon Dennis has been assessing the mood.Michael WhiteAlan TravisPhil MaynardJon DennisIain Duncan Smith

- Letters: Greece's economic problems and euro threats are exaggerated
Joseph Stiglitz's article (A principled Europe would not leave Greece to bleed, 25 January) and your leader (Under a Byzantine shroud, 30 January) offer quite a sensible analysis of Greece's recent economic troubles. Some other international press coverage vastly exaggerates the problem. The European Central Bank's dogmatic hardline euro policy, at a time of severe recession, is responsible not only for Greece's loss of competitiveness, which led to the twin deficits, but also for a really bad European export performance. This has been reduced by $109.1bn (€78.3bn) in the past 12 months. The recession is seriously testing the euro.Greece is a small part of the euro area, 2.7%, with roughly 3.9% of euro-area public debt. It is indeed in serious trouble, and various domestic factors, such as its rigid product markets, its tremendous public waste and, above all, its incompetent political elite, have offered plenty of room for extended international discontent. Ho。。ever, Greek GDP declined by 1.1% in 2009, from 2.9% in 2008, less than the average fall in the euro area, and much less than that of some countries. Also, the rise in the debt-GDP ratio for Greece from 2007 to 2011 will be 39.8% points – bad, you may say. But compare it with the UK's 44% points, Ireland's 71.1% points, Spain's 37.9% points, and the US's 35.7% points. Not quite the tragedy some people allude to!As for the risk of bankruptcy, which many believe may lead to an exit from the euro area, the current level of Greek indebtedness in both the private and public sectors is already comparable to those of the euro area countries. According to IMF data, Greece's average total indebtedness, private and public, is about 179% of GDP. The EU's average is 175%; Belgium's 219%; Ireland's 222%; Italy's 194%; the Neth

- A thank you note on moderation | Andrew Brown
Sometimes the only way to get something said is to bite your tongue. This is a thank you note for everyone who has done soI have been sitting quite hard on the comments in the last few posts on the Catholic scandals, and I wanted to thank everybody who played along, and to point out exactly what has been gained as a result. I could say that the comments have been much more interesting and pleasurable to read if they weren't full of expressions of disgust and accusations of complicity in paedophilia or its cover-up. That's true so far as it goes, but you might object that there are plenty of people who delight in abuse and love to breakfast off a cappucino of hot frothing outrage on a base of acid bitterness. Why should those poor souls have to go elsewhere for nourishment? Because we don't learn anything from them, that's why. The great thing that comments can supply is contact with the people who do know better than the writer does about the story, either because they are smarter, nicer, better informed, or more experienced, or have spent longer thinking about it. These aren't always the people they think they are. Like any decent journalist, I am confident that I know more about any particular story than 98% of the readers. This may sound horrendously arrogant, but that's the nature of news. The person who has it does think themselves better informed than the one who hasn't. I am also conscious that I know a lot less about any given subject than the remaining 2% of the readers. These figures are of course adjustable up and down to taste, and depending on the subject involved. If I were to write about piano music, or football, the novels of Charles Dickens, or East Enders, almost anyone interested in the subject would know a lot more than me. But on religion and some 何かを得る時には唯一の方法はあなたの舌をかましている
- Election TV debate from a US perspective | Larry Sabato
The three party leaders' articulacy put US politicians to shame, but Cameron seemed high-handed and Brown old-fashionedFrom an American perspective, there was a clear winner of Britain's first-ever prime ministerial TV debate: Nick Clegg. He looked sharp, was consistently articulate, and was able to challenge the other two candidates pointedly and effectively. By contrast, the other candidates gave unmemorable performances. Just as advertised, the incumbent prime minister seemed to belong to a pre-television era. Gordon Brown came across as old and leaden without seeming especially wise. David Cameron was stiff and occasionally uncertain, with an upper-class manner that appeared high-handed at times.Having said that, Clegg had it easy. Almost no one thinks he's the next prime minister, so the pressure was off. Both Brown and Cameron were respectful and friendly because they covet his voters. Both the Labour and Tory candidates occasionally used Clegg as a battering ram against the real opponent. In an American context, the three party leaders were marvellously articulate, putting US politicians to shame, including Barack Obama – who can be stilted without his teleprompter. This was a debate steeped in details and policy. There were plenty of memorised soundbites, yet the format encouraged quick thinking and gave voters a sense of the mental agility of each candidate. The subjects of the questions were familiar to anyone who watched the 2008 US presidential clashes: immigration, education, the healthcare system, and war casualties. The answers were different, for sure. Americans wouldn't necessarily have recognised the reasonable, constructive, multi-party approach to immigration, the informative commentary about educational reform, and the consensus about the worth of gov 3党の指導者の明確さは残念に米国の政治家を置くが、キャメロンは高圧とブラウン古いfashionedFromアメリカの視点ように、英国初の首相のテレビ討論の明確な勝者:ニッククレッグされました
- Russia and the US: a fresh Start | Nikolai Patrushev
In this post-cold war era we can refocus our energies and co-operate in cutting nuclear weapons and confronting terrorismWe are grateful for the words of solidarity that have come from our international partners in connection with the terrorist attacks that took place in Moscow and the North Caucasus. Like people all over the world, and specifically in Madrid in 2004 and Londoners in 2005, Russians are again reminded of our common vulnerability to a ruthless cause that has no respect for human life. These bombings were also a reminder of how the global security landscape has changed over the past 20 years.Once cold war foes, Russia and the west are today united in facing a very real terrorist threat that more than ever requires a joint, co-ordinated and determined effort to defeat it. It is perhaps fitting that this week in Prague, Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama will usher in the next phase in strategic relations by finalising the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (Start), slashing the number of nuclear warheads possessed by the world's two biggest nuclear powers. There is plenty of reason for optimism at this juncture. Cutting nuclear stockpiles by a third proves our shared commitment to non-proliferation, setting an example to nuclear powers the world over. At the nuclear summit in Washington on 12 April, Russia and the US will be calling on other nuclear nations to follow suit. The importance of scaling back nuclear arsenals and limiting the spread of nuclear weapons cannot be overstated. With international terrorist networks, radicalism and insurgencies forming an unfortunately common part of today's security environment, we should take the lead in ensuring nuclear weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.Russia and Nato already work closely together in countering _NULL_
- Obama to sign nuclear treaty with Russia
• US and Russian presidents arrive in Prague for signing• Arms treaty will slash two countries' nuclear arsenals by a thirdThe US president, Barack Obama, has arrived in Prague in the Czech Republic to sign an arms treaty with Russia that will slash their respective nuclear arsenals by a third. The new treaty, to be signed in mid-morning by Obama and the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, will cut their strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550 over seven years, about a third less than the 2,200 currently allowed.Obama is returning to Prague one year after he outlined his vision before an enthusiastic crowd for a world without nuclear weapons. The speech helped him win the Nobel peace prize, but Obama has acknowledged that eliminating nuclear weapons is unlikely to be achieved during his lifetime. The agreement to reduce nuclear warheads by a third succeeds the 1991 strategic arms reduction treaty (Start), which expired in December. It will have to be ratified by the US Senate – where conservative Republicans can be expected to give it a rough ride – and the Russian parliament. In addition to the warhead limit, the US and Russia must cut their total land, sea and air-based launchers to 800 each, and no more than 700 actually deployed within seven years. While that will leave plenty of nuclear weapons to destroy the world several times over, it marks a big drop from the total of 19,000 strategic warheads both sides deployed during the cold war.Obama wants to move for even deeper cuts but faces Russian reluctance because of American plans to build a missile defence system in Europe to counter a possible Iranian threat. Russia argues that antiballistic missile systems could neutralise its smaller arsenal.Even as Obama pushes for deep cuts in nuclear weapons, the Washington Post re _NULL_

- My Name Is Khan film review
A likable and slickly constructed Bollywood tale of understanding and tolerance has unwittingly provoked a storm in MumbaiIndian superstar Shahrukh Khan (often lovingly intialised to SRK) has found this film to be a lot more controversial than expected, even allowing for its plotlines involving US homeland security and terrorism. SRK plays an Indian man with Asperger's syndrome who, for reasons revealed as the film unfolds, is on a quest to personally deliver a message to the US president. Fox paid a lot to secure the international rights to this film and while the ultimate message it delivers, of understanding, community and tolerance, is one that deserves to be heard, it seems unlikely that it will have far-reaching crossover appeal – to say nothing of its problems in Mumbai, where the large and very vocal Shiv Sena movement have been attacking Khan via the film that bears his name. Western screenwriting guru Syd Field gets a credit for story consultancy, but the film is still very much structured according to Indian traditions. For instance, the interval is still used as the point where the film changes gear. As usual, the first half is more soap opera, spending plenty of getting-to-know-you time with the appealing characters before putting them through the wringer in the more politicised second section. Khan's quest lands him in government detention and sees him helping out a hurricane-ravaged Georgia town, while the post 9-11 climate sees anyone even vaguely resembling a Muslim under verbal and often physical attack. It's stunningly shot, on mostly US locations, and tackles plenty of hard topics – its deceptively light touch gets heavier as things progress. It's a shame that much of the intended audience will not see this well-intentioned, slickly constructed and

There are calls for Oregon, Washington and British Columbia to split from the US and Canada. Cascadia is not a bad ideaOne (Olympic) flame dies – but maybe another flame flickers back into life. All hail Cascadia, the nationalist dream of a new, free land that puts the environment, culture and liberal values first? Don't laugh (though don't get too carried away either). The name may sound somewhere between patent water softener and Prisoner of Zenda. The logic of the idea, however, has plenty of hard thinking behind it.In a sense, Thomas Jefferson started things rolling long ago. He saw no particular reason why any fledgling US should stretch to the Pacific. He was quite happy to countenance a separate republic way to the west. And so, of course, were the people who built the distant country where Oregon, Washington and British Columbia met. They dreamed of their own Cascadia, after the range of Cascade mountains that bound them together. They felt – as many still feel – that rule from Washington or Ottawa is governance simply too far. What? You hadn't heard about the Cascadian Nationalist party and its entirely civil pursuit of separatism? That's not entirely surprising. When al-Qaida tore down New York's twin towers, it also put up walls of bureaucracy along the border that made driving from Vancouver to Seattle heavy duty security business. Stop, as I've done, at the Blaine frontier post where Highway 99 meets Interstate 5 and you'll find rather more hassle than at Dover to Calais. But there is, nonetheless, some practical power here. Portland, Seattle and Vancouver are an almost continuous metropolitan belt. Think Leeds to Manchester to Liverpool. The maze of islands and promontories around Puget Sound make one natural entity. The models involved include Nissan's Titan pick-up trucks, Armada and Infiniti QX56 sport utility vehicles, and Quest minivans, some dating back to 2005.Some of the vehicles are being recalled to fix a problem with petrol gauges that indicate that there is plenty of fuel even if the tank is almost empty. In addition, Nissan said there were also problems with the brake pedal in some models. The firm has received three reports of incidents in which brake-pedal pins came loose, causing problems with braking, but it said no accidents had so far been reported. While most of the vehicles affected are in the US, some drivers in Japan, east Asia, Russia, Latin America and the Middle East will be affected.
