Stay hydrated, stretch your legs and wash your handsWhat are the most common problems?People complain of dry eyes, skin and mouth – and dehydration. Others of catching colds. The biggest worry is a blood clot in the leg (a deep vein thrombosis), which occurs in only one in 6,000 people after a flight of four hours, and one in 1,000 after longer or frequent flights.What causes dehydration?It is said that flying dries out the mucous membranes. This is because the relative humidity of cabin air is only 20%, compared to 40-70% in air-conditioned buildings. But there is no evidence that flying causes dehydration – the amount of water lost is about a glass's worth.What causes other problems?Air pressure in the cabin has an oxygen level equivalent to flying around 5,000ft or 8,000ft. Many people live at this altitude. It is only a problem for people with heart or lung disease. The Aviation Health Unit says that air is recirculated every two to three minutes (compared with three times less often in air-conditioned buildings) and that it is filtered as effectively as air in an operating theatre. However, you can catch infections from other passengers. Some viruses may be spread by people not washing their hands. Blood clots in the legs are caused by legs being crammed into a small space (there's an increased risk in tall people) – any journey that squashes your legs will do it.What can be done?Drink soft drinks (not tea or coffee). Move around the cabin so the blood in your legs gets a chance to move too. Use Vaseline for your lips if they get dry. Suck sweets to avoid a dry mouth. Wash your hands during the flight.When should I see my doctor?If you have a swollen, painful leg or shortness of breath, or chest pain after a flight. Tim Hodlin, who has died aged 64 of a lung disorder, was an exceptional father, friend and grower of roses. He was also a talented writer and television producer with a delightfully anarchic streak that frequently tested the nerve of the organisations for which he worked.He grew up in Malvern, Worcestershire, but when his family moved to London he was transferred to Latymer school in Hammersmith, where his passion became acting. One of his contemporaries there was Alan Rickman, and they later toured together with the National Youth Theatre. He was playing Edmund in King Lear at Lancaster University when he met his wife, Sue. They married in 1967 and went off together to Thailand with Voluntary Service Overseas. When he came back, Tim enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University to do an MA thesis on Burmese hill people, while earning money on the side with BBC radio. This pattern of eclectic brilliance continued throughout his life.I met him in 1981, by which time he had become a television researcher whose special asset was a good working knowledge of Farsi. He had picked the language up a few years earlier when working for the British Council in Tehran, and when the revolution made it almost impossible for western journalists to operate in Iran, his market value soared. I was editor of Panorama at the time, and he was an irresistible signing: funny, frank, quick-witted and supremely confident that he could deliver the impossible.I sent him off to Iran with a crew, and a few weeks later he rang from Heathrow to say the film was on its way and he would be back in a couple of hours to start editing. Our mother, Ana Timberlake, who has died aged 66 of the lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, was one of those rare women who proved that you can have it all. A successful businesswoman and loving mother of three, Ana was the founder of Timberlake Consultants Limited (TCL), a statistical consultancy firm, with particular applications in medical research and econometric modelling.Ana was born in Portugal, the daughter of a civil engineer. Her father, Armando da Palma Carlos, was at that time the resident engineer on the Pego do Altar dam construction site, Alentejo, where Ana spent her early childhood. Her family were no strangers to successful women. Her aunt, Elina Guimarães (whose husband, Adelino da Palma Carlos, was appointed prime minister following the 1974 revolution) was head of the National Council of Portuguese women and is considered to have been the first feminist in Portugal.Ana took her first degree, in mathematics, at Lisbon University, before coming to Britain in 1969 to do a master's degree in statistics and operational research at Southampton University. She then took up employment at PTRC (Planning and Transport Research and Computation), a small research unit in London.An early assignment at PTRC was to re-analyse the results of Robert Borkenstein's 1964 Grand Rapids study, upon which the British breathalyser test had been based in the mid-1960s. The original data had not been statistically adjusted and earlier analysis had suggested that driving improved with the intake of a small amount of alcohol.
