    • Stephen King: Staring at a new age of austerity
As I glanced through the weekend press, I detected a growing sense of envy. The UK economy is still struggling to pull its way out of its recession while the US economy, apparently, is back to its bouncing best. Certainly, the numbers from the final quarter of last year seem to support this view. The UK economy expanded at a meagre 0.3 per cent rate, after a small upward revision, but the US economy managed to spurt ahead at a 5.9 per cent rate. What do US policymakers know that our own domestic policymakers have yet to discover? として私は、週末の新聞でチラッ、私は羨望の成長感を検出しました

    • Letter: Zimbabwe repression
Blessing-Miles Tendi (Zuma's right on Zimbabwe, 4 March) blames EU targeted sanctions against Mugabe and his cronies for the failure of last year's power-sharing deal to bring about the hoped-for political transformation in Zimbabwe. That is absurd. The evidence that Zanu-PF continues to violate the agreement is overwhelming. In the past year MDC activists have been killed and abducted. Legislators and journalists have been arrested on spurious charges. Repressive media laws remain in place. Illegal invasions of commercial farms continue. Zanu-PF continues to use its control of the army, police and security sector to persecute its opponents. Just this week journalist Andrison Shadreck Manyere was arrested for filming political detainees outside a courthouse and union leader Gertrude Hambira fled the country fearing for her life after her offices were ransacked by police. • Obama's healthcare summit: No thaw yet in frozen debate | Michael Tomasky
Whether it passes or fails, the bigger lesson that Washington will take away from this war is: don't try anything bigHealthcare reform, at this point, is like the overwhelming snows we've been enduring on the US east coast this winter. One is sick to death of it, but there's no way to pretend it isn't there. It's in the way, and the only thing to do is to keep shovelling. The Democrats are being their usual inept selves. The historical antagonism between the Senate and the House of Representatives – the former looking down on the latter – is never to be underestimated, and it's amplified in the present case by the fact that they're now bickering over who should proceed first into the final phase of ironing out the differences between the versions of reform passed last year. The Republicans are being their usual recalcitrant selves. There were nice words at today's healthcare summit. But everyone knows that what the Republicans really want is to kill the bill at any cost and by any means. And they want to hang its death around the necks of the Democrats seeking re-election in autumn. So is it all hopeless? Oddly, no. First, Democrats do seem to be increasingly aware that it's in the party's political interests to pass something. There is still work to be done, but it appears – particularly in the famously craven Senate – that some senators have begun to wrap their heads around the notion that they should plough forward. Second, the White House is taking a more direct role in trying to herd those Democratic cats and make them act. Why the White House didn't do this last year is anyone's guess. But direct appeals from a president can be hard for a legislator to spurn.Whether it passes or fails, the bigger lesson that Washington will take away from this war is: don't try any
