Body Shop deserves respect for putting human values above a quick buck | Jonathan Glennie In ditching a supplier that displaced 123 families in Colombia to build a palm oil plantation, Body Shop struck a blow for dignityThe Observer reported at the beginning of the month that the Body Shop has pulled out of a supplier in Colombia on ethical grounds. This is a story about a company doing the right thing. It started a year ago when Christian Aid contacted the Observer to tell them a Body Shop supplier had just kicked 123 families off their land in order to burn down all the crops and trees to make a huge palm plantation. As Christian Aid's country rep in Colombia, I was personally involved in the case. I visited the displaced farmers and we hosted them in the Christian Aid office regularly. They were some of the most dignified people I have ever met, battered on all sides by an ongoing armed conflict and now displaced by a company that simply did not care what happened to them. The impact of the Body Shop's decision will be felt by these farmers and their families, as they continue to fight for a return to their land, and it will inspire farmers all over Colombia who will see that campaigning can lead to change. Throughout Christian Aid's engagement in this case, the big unknown was what the Body Shop would eventually decide. We knew the facts of the case, and we were confident that, when the Body Shop had them at its disposal, it would do the right thing. But the decision will have been difficult for them financially. Daabon, the Colombian company, has until now supplied the Body Shop with the majority of its palm oil, which it uses for its flagship product, soap. It is not all that easy to find new suppliers when you have extensive ethical guidelines, and I am sure some of the top executives sitting in the boardroom last week were arguing not to sever ties. dignityThe Observerは、ボディショップは倫理的な理由でコロンビアのサプライヤーから引き出され、その月の初めに報告されたため、コロンビアの難民123家族がパーム油のプランテーションを構築している業者を捨てでは、ザボディショップは打撃を打った
Rosemary's Baby: No 2 best horror film of all time Roman Polanski, 1968Roman Polanski's first Hollywood feature was an adaptation of Ira Levin's bestseller, and its success launched a trend for devil-baby, evil-kiddy and satanic pregnancy movies that extended well into the 70s. The novel was first recognised as potential film material at proof stage by low-budget horror entrepreneur William Castle, who ended up as the producer and had a fleeting cameo in the film as a man smoking a cigar outside a phone booth.According to a (probably spurious) film-making legend, Polanski, having never before adapted a novel, didn't realise he was allowed to make changes, with the result that his screenplay is remarkably faithful to Levin's book. Mia Farrow, best known for her role in the TV soap opera Peyton Place and as the wife of Frank Sinatra (who served her with divorce papers during the shoot) played Rosemary Woodhouse, a nice Catholic girl who with her husband Guy (John Cassavetes), a struggling actor, moves into an apartment in The Bramford, an old New York block with a sinister history. (The exteriors were filmed outside the Dakota building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where John Lennon would later be shot dead.) Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer play Minnie and Roman Castavet, the nosy neighbours from hell – and that's even before we find out they're satanists. Gordon won a best supporting actress Oscar, the only Academy Award for a horror movie until 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. The film works on multiple levels – as a supernatural thriller (though explicit paranormal elements are limited to a hallucinatory dream sequence and the final shot of the baby's eyes), as a psychological thriller about a paranoid pregnant woman who imagines herself at the centre of a conspiracy, and as the last word in marital betrayal, since t

Leno, Letterman, O'Brien ... yawn | Richard Adams Does US television really need Conan O'Brien and another repetition of the stale late-night talk show format? It didn't take long: only a few hours after the announcement that Conan O'Brien had signed a deal to do a late-night talk show on TBS, and the cable channel was already running station idents using the comedian. In the soap opera that has been US television's talk show merry-go-round, O'Brien now finds himself moving into the 11pm slot on the TBS comedy channel owned by Time Warner, when once he had the prime real estate of NBC's Tonight Show at the same hour. O'Brien parted company with NBC in January after just eight months, as his ratings sank compared with those of his predecessor, Jay Leno. The question is: does the sterile wasteland of US late night television have room for yet another repeat of the tired talk show format?Jay Leno – who bumped O'Brien out of the Tonight Show spot – and David Letterman are still in place doing their yawn-worthy man-in-suit-behind-desk-interviewing-celebrities gig. TBS itself had tried to inject a little novelty into the time slot by putting George Lopez there, at great cost and some marketing effort. Now Lopez is shunted back to midnight and O'Brien comes in at 11pm, to do the same thing as Leno and Letterman. The New York Times found some analysts who thought it was a great idea:I think Turner is a good fit for Conan. His audience might be too small for a broadcast network, but it's a fiercely loyal audience that should provide more than enough viewers for TBS. He can also maintain more of the edginess that he was known for at 12:30, that had to be diluted for an earlier hour on broadcast.George Lopez might also be better suited for the later hour, so this is a pairing that can work very well. This is a coup for TBS.Edgy? My Name Is Khan film review A likable and slickly constructed Bollywood tale of understanding and tolerance has unwittingly provoked a storm in MumbaiIndian superstar Shahrukh Khan (often lovingly intialised to SRK) has found this film to be a lot more controversial than expected, even allowing for its plotlines involving US homeland security and terrorism. SRK plays an Indian man with Asperger's syndrome who, for reasons revealed as the film unfolds, is on a quest to personally deliver a message to the US president. Fox paid a lot to secure the international rights to this film and while the ultimate message it delivers, of understanding, community and tolerance, is one that deserves to be heard, it seems unlikely that it will have far-reaching crossover appeal – to say nothing of its problems in Mumbai, where the large and very vocal Shiv Sena movement have been attacking Khan via the film that bears his name. Western screenwriting guru Syd Field gets a credit for story consultancy, but the film is still very much structured according to Indian traditions. For instance, the interval is still used as the point where the film changes gear. As usual, the first half is more soap opera, spending plenty of getting-to-know-you time with the appealing characters before putting them through the wringer in the more politicised second section. Khan's quest lands him in government detention and sees him helping out a hurricane-ravaged Georgia town, while the post 9-11 climate sees anyone even vaguely resembling a Muslim under verbal and often physical attack. It's stunningly shot, on mostly US locations, and tackles plenty of hard topics – its deceptively light touch gets heavier as things progress. It's a shame that much of the intended audience will not see this well-intentioned, slickly constructed and
