The last Polish president-in-exile in London, he passed the post's insignia on to the democratically elected Lech WalesaRyszard Kaczorowski, who has died aged 90, was Poland's last president-in-exile, serving from 1989 to 1990. His death in the recent air crash concludes a story of enduring belief in an apparently hopeless cause. Of the governments-in-exile which found refuge in London during the second world war, Poland's was unique in continuing for several decades – an existence that was at best eccentric and seemingly increasingly senseless.The son of a railwayman, he was born in Białystok, eastern Poland. He went to a commercial school, joined the Scouts and worked for a wine merchant. When Poland was divided and overrun in 1939 as a result of Hitler and Stalin's non-aggression pact, he was made second in command of a civil defence group organised by the Scouts.Białystok was occupied by the Soviets, but Kaczorowski continued clandestine activities with the Scouts and was in contact with emerging resistance groups. His anti-Soviet activities were uncovered by the NKVD, the forerunner of the KGB, and on 10 May 1941 he was sentenced to death, later commuted to 10 years' hard labour, starting at the Kolyma gulag in Siberia.Kaczorowski was released after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and enlisted in the pro-Soviet Polish forces under the command of General 。ładysław Anders. The air crash that killed Poland's leaders has led Russia to face its role in past horrors in KatynThere is no such thing as a good death. Every tragic death is senseless and aimless. But today Poles can bring some sense to this unprecedented tragedy in their country's history.For the last 70 years, the name Katyn had little resonance for most people in the west. It was also seen as a symbol of Russophobia on the part of Poles. Paradoxically, what happened on Saturday in Smolensk makes this notion obsolete.Due to last weekend's tragedy, the killing of 22,000 Polish officers by Russians in 1940 will become common knowledge. We Poles do remember that, but because they wanted to keep Russia happy, its western allies chose not to challenge Russian propaganda blaming Germans for the Katyn massacre. Now, the truth will become widely known – and truth is the very first criterion of any reconciliation.A second paradox is that the Russian reaction to the deaths – a crash that claimed the life not only of the Polish president, but of many senior government officials and the entire top brass of the military on their way to Katyn – is creating a unique situation. Authentic reconciliation between Poles and Russians, just like that of French and Germans under Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, has now become possible.Across Russia people are crying together with us today. The symbolism of the spot where the plane crashed, killing the Polish president Lech Kaczynski and the country's entire military leadership, is inescapable. In 1940, in the forests of Katyn, Stalin's secret police executed more than 20,000 Polish officers, wiping out a nation's elite. For decades, Soviet leaders blamed the massacre on the Germans, and even today, 20 years after Mikhail Gorbachev's admission and a week after Vladimir Putin became the first Russian leader to attend the commemoration, some Russians still believe the massacre is a Polish conspiracy.But sometimes symbols impede understanding. The causes of Saturday's crash are likely to be multiple – thick fog, a mechanical problem, a 26-year-old plane which the Polish government should have replaced, the pilot who ignored warnings not to attempt the landing, or indeed the president's insistence on landing. Katyn has become a cursed spot for Poles, but this tragedy has nothing to do with the past.Lech Kaczynski was a polarising figure inside and outside his country. He became president a year after Poland joined the European Union, but preferred dealing with George Bush's America. He lobbied Washington to deploy parts of its missile defence shield in Poland, arguing that this would enhance his country's security against Russia. He encouraged Georgia's and Ukraine's attempts to join Nato. This course of action has happily been jettisoned by Barack Obama, and the ensuing drive to reset relations with Russia has not only produced a new agreement on strategic nuclear missiles but has calmed relations throughout eastern Europe. Frozen conflicts still exist, as do gas pipeline politics and conflicting visions of European security.
