Wigmore Hall, LondonThe greatest musical experiences radically alter our perspectives. This was very much the case with the Nash Ensemble's Theresienstadt weekend. Concerts, films, talks and exhibitions examined the extraordinary cultural flowering in the ghetto-camp near Prague, set up by the Nazis in 1941, where, among thousands of others, the Czech-Jewish intelligentsia were held before transportation to death camps. The event's force lay in its broadening of our contextual awareness, and in its revelation of the quality of the work produced.Paintings and drawings by children, unflinching witnesses to history, hung on the walls of the Wigmore's subterranean Bechstein room. Three extraordinary women – an actor, a painter and a singer – spoke with wise eloquence of surviving both Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. Creativity was an existential affirmation of life, though traditions died along with people. Krása and Pavel Haas, Janáček's rightful successors, were murdered in the gas chambers. The ironies of Weimar Republic cabaret were kept alive, for a while, in bittersweet songs by Adolf Strauss and Otto Skute。ky.Many works were outright masterpieces. Haas's Four Songs on Chinese Poetry, Erwin Schulhoff's Duo for Violin and Cello, and above all Krása's Passacaglia and Fuga and his Rimbaud settings for baritone, clarinet, viola and cello belong in the regular repertory, irrespective of the circumstances of their composition.The Nash, an ensemble of stars, played with great technical power and depth of feeling. The singer was Wolfgang Holzmair, richly expressive, if overly score-bound. A recurring theme during the 60 years that I knew my wife, Anita, who has died aged 81 from cancer, was the search for the confidence that comes from education. She achieved this by studying to become a ceramicist and painter at Camberwell School of Art, south London (1963-65). She exhibited in Britain, notably for the National Society of Painters and the ArtCell Gallery, Cambridge, and in the Netherlands, Belgium and Brazil.Born Anita Highbloom in Brick Lane in London's East End, she was the daughter of Jewish immigrants who had arrived from Poland shortly before the first world war. Each of the seven children had to leave school aged 14 to take their turn in the family business, a kosher cafe/restaurant. Anita worked there for 10 years, during which time it became a centre for refugees, gamblers, small-time gangsters and struggling artists. She was an avid reader, spending every quiet period at her special table in a corner of the restaurant and listening to classical music. It was from this corner she ventured out into the wider world of music, film, theatre and art galleries: she later observed that it was reading that had provided her escape.In 1953 we got married, and the next day emigrated, keen to leave the British class system behind. The three years we spent in Canada and the US gave us new confidence, and we returned to Britain determined to educate ourselves.Anita worked in the film industry for five years, while supporting me in becoming an architect. I then supported her during her time at Camberwell.Our 50 years of backpacking around the world led to her invent and patent a rucksack, which was widely sold in all YHA adventure shops. An executioner reaches for his knife to cut the final tendons holding a head together to its body. A female saint cherishes a dark-bladed rapier. St Peter watches in helpless horror as his own crucified body is turned upside down. I can think of no other painter who imagined death so acutely from the inside, as a physical reality, something happening to a real person - which makes the claim to have discovered his corpse and the cause of his death all the more compulsive news. Caravaggio dealt in death, metaphorically and very literally. A life of violence led inexorably to his killing a man in a swordfight in the heart of Rome and fleeing south. But on his Mediterranean odyssey as a fugitive from justice he found more violence, more death. He joined the Knights of Saint John, a military order sworn to fight Islam, whose fortress on Malta had recently withstood a siege of macabre cruelty (heads fired from cannons, that sort of thing). On Malta he painted his greatest and most deathly work, a depiction of the murder of Saint John the Baptist in prison that anticipates every modern scene of torture and disappearance.Caravaggio's own death became his theme: he gave his own features to the decapitated Goliath in one of his very last pictures. His palette became darker, his paintings emptier and more sepulchral - The Burial of St Lucy that he painted in Syracuse is set inside a crypt that arches up in a brown void of abandonment. Spanish artist who filled the pages of 1950s British comicsIn the late 1950s, Fernando Fernández, who has died aged 70, was one of the youngest of a group of Spanish artists working for the British comics publisher Fleetway Publications. Only 17 when his first strips were published, Fernández filled the pages of British comics for the next decade, though he did so anonymously.In the UK, he earned his reputation for his work on Fleetway's Air Ace Picture Library, the romance comics Valentine, Marilyn and Roxy, and a variety of book covers. In the US, he is remembered for his highly stylistic contributions to the publisher James Warren's horror comics, including the eerie Rendezvous, which was voted one of the leading stories to appear in Warren's magazines.In Spain, his finest work, which combined his talents for storytelling and painting, began to appear in the 1970s. He was also a highly regarded portrait painter. His elegant and romantic images were shown in more than 100 exhibitions around the world and featured in museums and private collections, including that of King Juan Carlos.Born Fernando Fernández 。ánchez in Barcelona, he began drawing as a young boy. My friend Phil Kelly, who has died aged 59, was an extraordinary and gifted painter. His vibrant canvases have captured the imagination of collectors and supporters worldwide, including the poet Seamus Heaney, for whose wife, Marie, he completed a set of book illustrations, and the chef Rick Stein, for whose Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, Phil created a mural. Although raised in Ireland and England, he had lived in Mexico City since 1989 and became a Mexican citizen in 1999.Born in Dublin, Phil was educated at Rugby school, Warwickshire. He was expelled, and later attended college in Bath, where his artistic talent was immediately recognised. He moved to London, to Whitby, in north Yorkshire, and then to Portugal, subsidising his painting with a variety of occupations.His desire for light and colour took him in 1983 to Mexico City. He arrived with £50 in his pocket and no Spanish. He was on a visit to England in 1985 when an earthquake struck Mexico City, taking close friends and all of his Mexican work. He returned to work and exhibiting in London, but left for Mexico again in 1989, marrying Ruth Munguia, a cultural administrator, the following year. They had two daughters, Ana Elena and Maria José.His career was flourishing and he took up painting full time. Ruth was a major influence in this, organising exhibitions and promoting his work. After the art collector Patrick J Murphy happened upon his exhibition Babel Descifrada (Babel Deciphered), at Mexico City's Museum of Modern Art in 1996, shows followed in Dublin.Wherever Phil lived, there were always the same ingredients that reflected the man: drawings and colour trials taped to walls, good literature, blues or jazz music, wine, excellent food and paint.
