The Greenland glaciers are very nearly melted altogether, reports Robert Purves, an Australian environmental consultant and board member of World Wildlife Fund Intl., whom I met last week in Lake Louise, Alberta, one of the wonders of the world and on the UNESCO list of protected places.  Purves had just tramped all over Greenland's glacier area for 2 weeks before  touring the Canadian glacier area such as the Columbia Ice Field close by which includes 12 massive glaciers, and supplies 65% of Canada's water supply.

    • Arctic ice island 'poses no immediate threat'
The largest ice island in almost 50 years poses no immediate threat as it will take up to two years to drift through the Arctic Ocean, the Canadian who discovered it told AFP.Trudy Wohlleben, a forecaster from the Canadian Ice Service, spotted the massive slab of ice that broke off a glacier in Greenland last week as she analyzed raw data from a NASA satellite. At about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) long and 10 kilometers wide, the ice island is about four times the size of Manhattan and experts say the last time the Arctic lost such a large chunk was in 1962.

    • 2010: probably the hottest year ever recorded
Temperature records tumbled in Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Burma and Pakistan, causing heatwaves and devastated harvests2010 was the year of the heatwave, with record temperatures set in 17 countries. Two leading groups of scientists say it was the warmest since records began in 1850; another suggests it was the second-warmest.But the year that saw an unprecedented month-long heatwave in Russia will be followed by cooler global temperatures in 2011, say climate scientists monitoring sea temperatures in the Pacific that are thought to determine temperatures around the world. The final ranking of 2010 will not become clear until November and December data are available in early 2011, but November global temperatures are similar to those observed in November 2005, suggesting 2010 is on track for near-record levels. This decade also proved to be the hottest on record, with temperatures averaging 0.46C above the 1961-90 average, 0.03C above the 2000-09 mean and the highest value yet recorded for a 10-year period. The Russian heatwave, which saw temperatures in Moscow nearly 15C above normal for a month, led to thousands of deaths as well as forest fires across a wide region. But the heatwave extended across the Middle East, and northern India, devastating harvests and leading to food shortages.Previous temperature records tumbled in 17 countries including Russia, Ukraine, Finland, Chad, Kuwait, Burma, Sudan, Niger and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan had Asia's hottest-ever recorded day when the temperature in the abandoned city of Mohenjo-daro in Sindh province reached 53.5C.The most extreme temperature anomalies in 2010 occurred across most of Canada and Greenland, where annual temperatures were 3C or more above normal, and across much of Africa and south Asia, where annual temperatur

    • Is a federal Nordic state on the cards? | Eirikur Bergmann
The Nordic nations together would have economic and political clout – if they could overcome their fierce independent spiritsToday the leaders of the five Nordic states are meeting to discuss the possibility of creating a Nordic federal state. Ever since the Kalmar Union of the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden – reaching to Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland and Orkney – collapsed in 1523, the idea of reinstating some sort of a supra-national Nordic state regularly crops up. Now this old idea has resurfaced in a book the Swedish history professor Gunnar Wetterberg submitted to the Nordic Council in Reykjavik today.Wetterberg argues that together the Nordics (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with the three micro territories the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aland), will be stronger and more stable and prosperous than they are on their own. After Sweden and Finland joined Denmark in the European Union in 1995, leaving Norway and Iceland in the European Free Trade Association (Efta) (and within the European Economic Area, which brings them in to the European internal market), the Nordic Council has been in search of renewed purpose. Over the last 15 years the cracks have become ever more obvious in Nordic co-operation: it has been downgraded to cover soft policy issues such as culture, while economics and other hard policy has been transferred to the European level. With a joint government and a parliament based on a common constitution, the federal Nordic state should concentrate on foreign policy and defence, the economy and the labour-market, and research, leaving most other policy areas to the regional authorities in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Reykjavik and Stockholm. Wetterberg compares his Nordic federation to the Swiss model and links

Cairn's first big strike was in Pennsylvania. After being set up as a venture capital start-up it was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1998. Gammell, who is still chief executive, was knighted in 2006.Cairn Energy grew rapidly after moving into south Asia in the 1990s, and between 1990-2010 average output increased from 5,000 boe (barrels of oil equivalent) a day to more than 77,000 boe/day. Since 2004, it has moved between the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, as its market capitalisation has fluctuated. However, its current market capitalisation of over £6bn puts in the top 50 capitalised companies listed in the UK.But the last five years have been turbulent. During the commodity boom of 2007, the company's share price soared to a high of 373p, only to fall by 70% in the latter half of 2008as a result of the global recession and turbulence in commodity markets. Cairn India, listed since 2007 on the Bombay stock exchange, has a market capitalisation of $13bn, making it the fourth-largest oil and gas company in India.Cairn Energy has identified Greenland as an important future site for exploration and extraction, but will also maintain its focus in South Asia.Cairn EnergyOilOil and gas companiesIndiag
