    • WikiLeaks cables had a huge impact in Spain, says El Pais editor-in-chief
'It's probably the biggest story this newspaper has ever been involved with,' says Javier Moreno, El Pais editor-in-chiefThe impact within Spain and in Latin America has been huge. This has been especially so in Spain, because of our four-part series on the national court, looking at some high-profile cases in which the US embassy in Madrid has tried to influence judges, the government, and prosecutors in cases involving US citizens. One involved a detainee in Guantánamo, another covered secret rendition flights in Spain, and another was about the murder of a Spanish journalist by US fire in Baghdad. The last was the most complicated because the cables revealed the double speak of government and prosecutors. Our stories showed that they told US diplomats they would try to hinder or even close down the case while telling the family of the dead journalist that they would do everything they could to advance it. This has been difficult for the Socialist government to explain. Those to the left of the government in parliament have called for an investigation but I fear that this will be voted down. The conservative opposition has restrained from publicly criticising the government over what has been revealed by WikiLeaks and El País – my guess is they have come under pressure from the US embassy not to make any political capital out of this.In Latin America, the reaction has been massive too. So far we have published stories about Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela – and we have been inundated with calls from those countries. Some foreign ministers have called me to express how worried they were about the revelations. The biggest problem for the government will come in the reaction from Venezuela over our latest revelations – Spanish officials will have a lot of explain 。。

    • Letters: Support for Assange
We protest at the attacks on WikiLeaks and, in particular, on Julian Assange (Report, 9 December) The leaks have assisted democracy in revealing the real views of our governments over a range of issues which have been kept secret and are now irreversibly in the public domain. All we knew about the mass killing, torture and corruption in Iraq and Afghanistan has been confirmed. The world's leaders can no longer hide the truth by simply lying to the public. The lies have been exposed. The actions of major corporations such as Amazon, the Swiss banks and the credit card companies in hindering WikiLeaks are shameful, bowing to US government pressure. The US government and its allies, and their friends in the media, have built up a campaign against Assange which now sees him in prison facing extradition on dubious charges, with the presumed eventual aim of ensuring his extradition to the US. We demand his immediate release, the dropping of all charges, and an end to the censorship of WikiLeaks.John Pilger, Lindsey German Stop the War Coalition, Salma Yaqoob, Craig Murray, Alexei Sayle, Mark Thomas, Caryl Churchill, AL Kennedy, Celia Mitchell, Ben Griffin (former soldier), Terry Jones, Sami Ramadani, Roger Lloyd Pack, David Gentleman, Miriam Margolyes, Andy de la Tour, Katharine Hamnett, Iain Banks Julian AssangeWikiLeaksIraqAfghanistanAmazon.comguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds Wikileaksは攻撃では、弊社の抗議は、特に、ジュリアンAssange(レポート12月9日)のリークが秘密にされているとされ、現在不可逆的に問題の範囲で我々の政府の本当の見解を明らかに民主主義を支援してきたパブリックドメイン

    • Cyber attacks: payback time | Editorial
The attack on companies who disassociated themselves with Wikileaks has been hitting both right and wrong targetsIn a cyber attack known as Operation Payback, a group of online activists called Anonymous targeted the websites of companies that had treated WikiLeaks like a bad smell. Visa, MasterCard, Paypal and Amazon have all had their websites, and in some cases their services, affected. Welcome to the world of the chaotic good. It is chaotic. But is it good? These companies all considered that their association with WikiLeaks damaged their brand image, a reflection prompted in some cases by a helpful call from the US state department. In essence they are trying to have it both ways: pretending in their marketing that they are free spirits and enablers of the cyber world, but only living up to that image as long as they don't upset anyone really important. At Amazon there is real confusion between the two roles: it refused to host WikiLeaks but continued to sell an eBook of the leaked cables online. The hacktivists of Anonymous may be accused of many things – such as immaturity or being run by a herd instinct. But theirs is the cyber equivalent of non-violent action or civil disobedience. It disrupts rather than damages. In challenging the credit card companies and the web hosts in this way, they are reminding these businesses that their brand reputation relies not only on how the state department sees them, but also on how they maintain their independence in the eyes of their users. Not all the targets of the internet activists are the right ones. • Tech Weekly podacst: WikiLeaks, Anonymous and cyber war
This week we turn the whole programme over to the extraordinary events that have taken place on the web over the past fortnight.Since the Guardian and four other newspapers around the world printed the details of US diplomatic cables that were leaked to whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, major internet companies and services have been taken offline in a battle between hackers and governments – all over the principle of the freedom of the internet. In this programme we'll discuss whether this could be the first global cyber war, as well as looking at what has happened so far and how the attacks took place. We'll hear how Tom Cruise's video on the virtues of Scientology helped spawn online activists Anonymous, and an expert on electronic transactions gives his view of the success of the Operation Payback attacks. The programme is presented by Jemima Kiss, who is joined by the Guardian's technology editor Charles Arthur, Professor William H Dutton of the Oxford Internet Institute and Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at security experts Sophos. You may also want to listen to our recent Guardian Focus podcast which looks at the future of US diplomacy and the Politics Weekly podcast which discusses whether governments can - and should - keep secrets from their voters.Don't forget to ...• Mail us at tech@guardian.co.uk• Get our Twitter feed for programme updates or follow our Twitter list• Like our Facebook page• See our pics on Flickr/Post your tech picsJemima KissCharles ArthurScott Cawley We。。 Don。。

    • Iran: Keep talking | Editorial
Both sides are stuck in a rut of proving to the other that their policies are prevailing, but neither has seriously begun negotiatingYesterday Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations plus Germany met for the first time in 13 months in Geneva. As usual, the noises off the stage threatened to drown the proceedings out before they had begun. The first batch of WikiLeaks exposures revealed that Saudia Arabia had repeatedly urged the US to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. Last week an Iranian nuclear scientist was assassinated and another wounded in a bomb attack, which Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, linked to UN security council resolutions against Iranian scientists. He said the resolutions provided cover to terrorist groups to carry out assassinations under the direction of foreign spy services. Then Iran announced it was using locally mined uranium in its fuel cycle. As it already has enough uranium to continue enrichment, and could not mine enough yellowcake feedstock to service an industrial reactor anyway, the announcement was symbolic. But the message was not – Iran will not be deterred from pursuing its civilian nuclear programme. Both sides are stuck in a rut of proving to the other that their policies are prevailing, and that they are in a stronger position than they were 13 months ago. But neither has seriously begun negotiating. It is time to learn from past mistakes. And, in this respect, it is interesting to hear what the Iranians who have a stake in regime change have to say about dealing with Iran's government. The opposition Green movement says that sanctions are not only hitting the wrong people, but also stopping Iran's development in a way that takes the heat off President Mahmoud Ahmadeinejad's own economic incompetence.

    • Revealed to little acclaim - the pill that prevents cancer
If Big Pharma had unveiled a brand new drug that would stop 20% of cancer deaths, the hype would be enormous and the pressure to buy it, at an inevitably high cost, huge. But it exists - it's called aspirin, it costs almost nothing and the revelation of its potential failed to make most front pagesOn my way home from work last night, I stopped at the chemist and bought a small plastic tub containing what appears to be the world's first genuine miracle drug. Low-dose aspirin. The tub contained 100 small pills, each one 75g. It cost just over £1. If a team of researchers at Oxford University, publishing today in the Lancet medical journal are to be believed, taking one of these a day for at least five years and preferably much longer can cut your risk of cancer by 20% or more. You would have thought the bunting would be flying from the lamp posts and champagne popping in the street. The Big C is supposed to be everybody's biggest dread. We are constantly exhorted to stop smoking, eat more fruit and vegetables and cut our weight - all of which would help save us from cancer, but which so many of us seem to find so hard to do. And now we have a once-a-day pill that can substantially reduce the risk - in the case of gastrointestinal cancer by over 50%.And yet the coverage has been relatively subdued, the excitement level low. While the BBC's Today programme led its news bulletins with the story and Sky News did a package, the newspapers - with the exception of the Express which carries a weekly miracle pill story - failed to run it on the front pages. My story, under heavy competition with the latest from WikiLeaks, made page 8.Why is this?Familiarity breeds contempt, they say. We already know aspirin can help prevent heart attacks and stroke. • Cancún climate change summit: Campaigners share their views | Jaz Cummins
Halfway through the second week of the climate change summit in Cancún, we hear from attending organisations campaigning on development issuesJoining the politicians and journalists at the Cancún climate change summit are hundreds of activists and representatives from campaigning organisations who are attempting to make the voices of those living in developing countries heard at the talks. With a few days left until the summit concludes we asked some of them about their experiences at the summit and whether they think the COP16 negotiations will deliver an international climate deal. Here are a few of their replies. Plus some of the comments about the summit coming through on Twiter.Kirsty Wright, climate campaigner, World Development MovementAs we move into the second week of negotiations, Cancún looks destined to be a repeat of the catastrophe we saw in Copenhagen. Developing countries currently have little to be optimistic about. WikiLeaks confirmed that the UK has been lobbying for climate finance to be provided as loans through the much-loathed World Bank, instead of grants through the more democratic UN. Unless the UK and other rich countries have a wholesale change of heart, millions of people will be locked into deeper debt and poverty, as well as a climate crisis they have no historical responsibility for causing. There are also serious concerns about the ever decreasing space for civil society. We are far from an outcome that has justice at its heart.Bill Mckibben, founder of 350.orgAs usual, almost all the pressure is on the developing countries in week one of these talks. America's ongoing attempt to cast itself as a poor country (or China and India as rich ones) dominates most of the discussion - the pressure is on to scrap Kyoto's two-track system and make
