Even then one sensed the English-speaking audience turning away from the BBC and to the likes of al-Jazeera simply because the Qatar-based channel had the resources to cover the issues that mattered to the region in the detail that made it relevant there.After years of belt-tightening, teams of journalists at Bush House already achieve the impossible every day. There's been no slack in the system for years.The impact of these latest cuts could be to push the service to breaking point. For the journalists who lose their jobs it will be a time of turmoil. For listeners who lose their services entirely, like those in the Caribbean and the Balkans, it means losing one of the few trustworthy and dispassionate sources of vital information.
