- Social Media Marketing: Be Careful What You Wish For, You Just May Get It
Age is all about perspective. At 40, I am ancient, old to a 20 year old, but I am delightfully spry to a 60 year old. It all depends on your vantage point. So, what is your perspective when I tell you I vividly remember an episode of The Twilight Zone that has stuck with me to this day. In it, a man dies and is greeted by an angel who tells him he has died and he can have whatever he wants. He wants to go gambling - he wins every time. Luxury accommodations, beautiful women on his arm - done. He was a thief in life, so he asks to rob a bank. Arrangements are made and he gets away with the money - no problem. But after a short while, he gets bored and wants to lose at gambling, get caught at the bank, not have every woman he sees, etc. The angel is confused and doesn't understand. The man says that maybe he doesn't belong here and should be "in the other place" (early television code for Hell). The angel tells him the memorable catch phrase "You don't understand, you are in the other place." (Insert insidious wicked laugh and fade to black). 年齢は、すべての観点である
- Quelle joie! Marks & Spencer brings British quirkiness back to Paris
Agnès Poirier rejoices at the reopening of a very British corner in the French capital, 10 years after it closed downTen years exactly after having closed its most profitable shop in the world, right in the heart of Paris, Marks & Spencer revient chez nous. What joy! This time, the British retailer has chosen a rather grand location: the Champs Elysées. Nothing less. Coleslaw and mint sauce no doubt deserved to be sold on France's most famous avenue. I know many Parisians who will gorge themselves with M&S scones and lemon curd this week-end. I'm rejoicing too. This will save me bringing M&S supplies back to France every two months.I was two when Marks and Spencer opened its first grand magasin boulevard Haussmann in Paris, opposite the Galeries Lafayettes. Many Parisians still remember vividly the arrival of such an exotic concept: a British shop selling British food and British lingerie to us French women. Just imagine the sheer bewilderment. And the cheek of it! British audacity soon paid off. And Parisians would prove that, after all, they were more broad-minded and less haughty that they might look. The success was such that Marks & Spencer opened 18 more shops and food halls in France before spreading its wings throughout Europe. For 25 years the Paris flagship would be the group's most successful, along with London's Marble Arch. And I was among its youngest fans. In the 80s M&S became one of my favourite destinations on a Saturday. My mother Nicole and I would hop on the 29 bus which would slowly take us from Nation to Opéra by way of Bastille. After a visit to the Galeries Lafayettes, a stop at M&S was the day's highlight. I would zoom in on the fruit tartelettes, those coming in packs of six and which you're supposed to heat up before eating. - Acts of penance? Why Irish theatre is still obsessed with Catholicism
A spate of plays dealing with religious oppression in the country is a reminder that we can take years to process collective traumaTowards the end of Irish Theatre Magazine's annual international critics' forum last Thursday, Willie White made a fascinating comment from the floor. The incoming artistic director of the Ulster Bank Dublin theatre festival suggested the humiliation felt by many in the Republic of Ireland at being bailed out by the EU and the International Monetary Fund after the country's financial crisis was not entirely merited. As he saw it, Ireland had long ago ceded the independence it had gained in 1922 – not to the money men, but to the Catholic church. After seeing some of the shows in the festival, you could see what he meant. On one particular day, I saw three plays back to back which bore vivid witness to the church's hold for the greater part of the 20th century. Laundry by ANU Productions is a stunning piece of one-to-one site-specific theatre performed in a former Magdalene laundry on the north side of the city where, right until the mid-1990s, young women were incarcerated, typically after falling pregnant while unmarried.Still reeling from the terrible beauty of Louise Lowe's production, I rushed to Testament by Colm 。óibín, a dark, brooding, wordy monologue starring none other than the Virgin Mary, who puts right a few misconceptions about the death of her son. Then it was over to the Lir, the newly opened national academy of dramatic art, where Brokentalkers was staging The Blue Boy, a troubling piece of documentary theatre about Ireland's industrial schools, where religious orders would educate orphaned children. As horrific stories continue to emerge even today, it's clear education wasn't the only thing these schools did.As an outsider, _NULL_

- In Syria's rebel city 'they will shoot anything that moves'
Deraa is the centre of the revolt against the Assad regime. Here, a resident of a village on its outskirts describes life under siegeThere was shooting again last night. It has become routine. We haven't slept more than two hours at a time since the shooting began. It stops and then starts again. There is maybe one hour break between shooting. We are like hostages in our homes. We are surrounded by tanks.Yesterday we heard another three were killed. They were trying to go out to support the martyrs from Deraa, and the army shot them. They were only young; 18, 19, 22. There were more injured as well – 16 more from here but I don't know how many more nearby, because we can't communicate. We are distributing all the injured among the houses because we are not allowed to take them to hospitals. We are trying to treat them for gunshot wounds inside the houses, but we don't have any medical equipment, we don't have any anaesthetics or even enough bandages– just basic first aid. Some of them are critical. There is no medical aid at all, and the doctors who try to treat the wounded are being arrested or shot.We haven't had any electricity for five days now, and no water. There's no gas. We are living by candlelight at night. We don't have any food. We are surviving on the pickled vegetables that we store over the year, that's all we have left to eat. We had tank water but today we heard the army has shot the tanks.Yesterday the army came to the houses and ordered the women to come out. They handed them loaves of bread and held guns to their heads then made them hand them to people in front of the state television cameras, so it looked like we had food and that everything is fine here. It's not and we don't have any food. I don't know what happened to the bread.Anyone here who lea Deraaは、アサド政権に対する反乱の中心地です

- Communities in north Nigeria: marginalised and turning violent | Alex Vines
Knee-jerk reactions must be avoided, and policy responses must ensure all Nigerians feel protected and valuedThe bombing of the UN building in Abuja is part of a worrying trend in Nigeria over the last year. With responsibility apparently being claimed by local Islamic extremist group Boko Haram, it is the first such attack aimed at an international organisation, and possibly to provoke a counter-productive international security response. This UN building is situated in Abuja's relatively secure diplomatic zone. As a sanctions inspector I worked there on number of occasions – one of hundreds of Nigerian and international staff who use this busy office on a daily basis. I never thought I'd be analysing a bombing of it.Boko Haram was formed by Muslim cleric Mohammed Yusuf in 2002, in Maiduguri. Until 2009 it was known as a peaceful movement, but this changed in June that year with a short-lived uprising aimed at establishing an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. The Nigerian security forces responded fiercely, leaving over 800 dead in a month, including Mohammed Yusuf. After a brief respite, during which surviving members regrouped, from January 2010 Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a spate of bombings and shoot-and-run attacks. A Boko Haram spokesperson told reporters this June that members had received training in Somalia. This claim followed a car bomb attack on Nigeria's police headquarters that left at least six people dead. Several people were also killed by a bomb blast at a bar near a barracks in Abuja over New Year. It is not just Abuja that suffers bomb attacks. Previous attacks claimed by Boko Haram have targeted police stations and other targets in various northern states of Nigeria.Even with Boko Haram claiming apparent responsibility, blame needs to 無条件反射的反応は避けなければならない、と政策対応は、すべてのナイジェリア人がアブジャで国連の建物の保護とvaluedThe爆撃は前年比ナイジェリアで心配な傾向の一部であると感じるようにする必要があります

- Revisiting 18th Century Fashion - review
Palace of Versailles and Musée Galliera stage an exhibition overflowing with taffeta, lace, and gold and silk embroidery in the apartments of the Grand Trianon in Versailles, FranceThe Palace of Versailles and Musée Galliera are staging an exhibition, Revisiting 18th Century Fashion, in the apartments of the Grand Trianon, at Versailles, France. It hinges on the understandable interest in that era displayed by contemporary dress designers. The dialogue between the era of the Dangerous Liaisons and the present-day works so well it is often hard to date the 60 selected garments. In fact only a quarter of the exhibits, taken from the Galliera collection, are historic, very few items of clothing having survived the French revolution. The exhibition brings to life the delightful pink-marble Italianate palace. A succession of reception rooms and apartments, flooded with light from high windows, dazzle the eye with masses of silk taffeta, lace, and gold or silk embroidery. You fully expect to run into Madame de Pompadour or Marie-Antoinette. The epitome of refinement, the Grand Trianon was designed by Mansart but now attracts far fewer visitors than does the main palace. The show starts in the Salle des Gardes with a display centring on an habit à la française, with its embroidered blue silk jacket, waistcoat and breeches, dated 1765. In 1990 the late Alexander McQueen, then chief designer at Givenchy, revisited this precursor of the three-piece suit with an outfit in silver lace. Vivienne Westwood preferred steel-coloured silk, whereas Jean-Paul Gaultier opted for a jacket in metallised organza. The first sign of fresh interest in this period came in the 1950s, with superb evening dresses by Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain, illustrated by two ball gowns embroidered with gold a

- Nasa satellite has fallen to Earth
Scientists say the six-tonne UARS satellite started its fall to Earth somewhere over the Pacific OceanThe six-tonne Nasa satellite has fallen back to earth somewhere over the Pacific, the space agency has said, but it has yet to determine the precise location of re-entry.It said early on Saturday morning that the satellite had started its fiery death plunge somewhere over the vast Pacific Ocean.Details were still sketchy, but the US Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center and Nasa said the satellite had entered Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean, but that doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea. Some 26 pieces of the satellite representing 1,200lbs (544kg) of heavy metal were expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300lbs.The upper atmosphere research satellite, or UARS, will be the biggest Nasa spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-tonne Skylab space station and the more than 10-tonne Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.Russia's 135-tonne Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.Earthlings can take comfort in the fact that no one has ever been hurt by falling space junk – to anyone's knowledge – and there has never been serious property damage.Nasa put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at one in 3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at one in 22tn, given that there are 7 billion people on the planet.SatellitesSpaceNasaCanadaAfricaLisa O'Carrollguardian.co.uk © 2011 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. - Yorkshire rallies to its threatened beetle
Students and lecturers are making an 'ark' of foodplants to protect the UK's last, isolated colony of the vivid green Tansy BeetleThe Tansy is a nicely-named plant and in Yorkshire it is also home to a very fine beetle; but only just. The UK population of the irridescent Tansy Beetle is confined to a 26-mile stretch beside the river Ouse, the river which occasionally turns parts of the centre of York into a lake.Luckily, the same stretch includes Askham Bryan, one of the UK's leading countryside, farming, forestry and horticultural colleges.Lecturers, students and beetles have got together in a project called the Tansy Ark, which is doing a Noah-style rescue of the little creature's surviving population. The idea is that by growing tansy at the college, which is up on a hill above the Leeds-York A64 (the UK's earliest dual carriageway as I've already mentioned once before today), beetles will be both encouraged and safe from regular flooding of their habitats closer to the river. The initiative is being helped by the Tansy Beetle Action Group – and isn't it a real tribute to the UK way of life that such an organisation exists (and has its own Facebook page, needless to say, as per the link) Members have been concerned for a while at the Tansy plant's struggles with grazing livestock, shading willows and the more dominant Himalayan balsam (the one whose seedpods pop like grenades, as my parents discovered when they did their courting along the banks of the river Aire in Leeds).Dr Deirdre Rooney of Askham Bryan, who took the intimate photos which enhance this post, says:We are delighted to be involved and have created a plot on campus of Tansy plants which is the beetle's sole food source. The plan is to introduce beetles to our Ark next spring. The beetles are currentl null, responseDetails: Suspected Terms of Service Abuse. Please see responseStatus: 40

- Why Turkey's women and children directive is good for football | Ally Fogg
The days when matches were an all-male domain are thankfully a thing of the pastThere are three things I vividly recall about the first football match I attended without an adult chaperone. It was sometime around 1980 at Muirton Park, watching St Johnstone take on Airdrieonians. My first memory was paying the junior admission fee, an extortionate £1.70, which I'd scraped together from my piggy bank in silver and coppers. As the man in the box counted with mounting annoyance, a couple of older kids ran behind me and hurdled the barrier, leading to an embarrassing accusation that I was a professional decoy. The second memory was local legend John Brogan doing what he did best – elbowing a defender in the nose then scuffing a shot under the Airdrie keeper. It's a man's game, football. Except it isn't. My clearest memory was of a woman nearby taking umbrage at a referee's decision and unleashing a torrent of such unimaginable filth that a few of my 14-year-old hairs turned white. I learned that day that, when it comes to football, sugar and spice are checked in at the turnstiles.I'm not sure if Turkish women have access to a similar vocabulary to their sisters in eastern Scotland, but it must have been fascinating to attend Fenerbahce's match with Manisaspor on Tuesday night, where two professional teams played out a 1-1 draw in front of a crowd of women and children. The occasion arose after a violent pitch invasion in a European match last season, which originally resulted in a punitive order that the home club play two games behind closed doors. After consideration, the Turkish football federation relented and agreed to allow the matches to be played in front of an audience, on condition that it excluded men and boys over the age of 12.By all accounts, the experiment was 試合はすべて、男性のドメインだった日は、ありがたいことにpastThereのものとなりました私は鮮やかに私は大人付き添いなしで参加した第一フットボールの試合について、リコール三つのことです
- Review – Fausto Pirandello, Nudes
The famous playwright's son is also capable of great drama, as his paintings at the Palazzo Grimani in Venice illustrateFausto Pirandello, I Nudi Palazzo Grimani, VeniceFausto Pirandello (1899-1975) was the youngest of the playwright's three children and his paintings reflect the same troubled background as his father's drama. There are few opportunities to see his work so we were keen to see the exhibition on the sidelines of the Venice Biennale (until 27 November), despite it only showing 25 works. His nudes are some of the strangest painted during the last century: brutal and unpleasant, verging on the unbearable at times. They are reminiscent of Fautrier, Dubuffet and Bacon, alternating between adoration and hatred of women. Psychoanalysts would find plenty of material here, if only because of Pirandello's relations with his deranged mother and tyrannical father. After surviving the first world war, Pirandello disregarded paternal hints that he should become a sculptor and started painting, in a Viennese style akin to Schiele and Klimt. In 1923 he switched to blunt realism. The show opens with a series of nudes lying on unmade beds. Over and over again Pirandello painted his version of Courbet's Origine du Monde, which he cannot have seen, and Le Sommeil, by the same artist, with which he was familiar. He married a penniless peasant girl who had modelled for him, further irritating his father, and in 1927 the couple moved to Paris. Here Pirandello got to know Picasso, Pascin and Derain and the Italian colony, with artists such as De Chirico or Savinio.Their influence is apparent in the nudes he produced in the 1930s, which reflect the prevailing neoclassical trend. - Dale Farm evictions: pitch battle | Editorial
The long tradition of mistrust between settled and Traveller communities has been inflamed into open hatredThe scenes from Dale Farm yesterday morning were stomach-churning. The vivid images that will stay in the mind were of young mothers fleeing with babies in their arms, of old ladies frightened faces lit by blazing fires. Violence of this kind demands explanation. On the face of it, the case is entirely straightforward. The Travellers have broken planning laws by setting up, albeit on land they owned, homes for which they do not have planning permission. Basildon council's right to send in the bailiffs has been exhaustively contested in the courts.Although the strength of yesterday's police response, which included the first ever use of tasers in crowd control, will raise difficult questions, the proportionate use of force was sanctioned in law: and it should be remembered that the sympathisers with the Travellers, if not the Travellers themselves, were ready to use force too. There is almost nothing good to be said for the long and miserable saga that has culminated in the eviction of 80 families from their homes – except that now it has reached its wretched climax, it is essential to stop it happening again. The damage caused by the bitter standoff between Basildon and the Dale Farm residents goes far beyond the people caught up in it. The long tradition of mistrust between settled and Traveller communities has been inflamed into open hatred. To get a flavour of how unrestrained some people now feel they can be, look at the reaction to an appeal for peace made yesterday by the Bishop of Chelmsford: character assassination would be an understatement. That will make dealing with the real problem that underlies Dale Farm all the more difficult. As the high court judge _NULL_

- Letters: Cause for concern in Bahrain and Georgia
The trial of 20 Bahraini health workers was due to resume on 28 August before a military court, despite assurances from the king of Bahrain that future hearings would be before a civilian court (Bahrain's underclass plays out cat-and-mouse routine of protest and repression, 9 August). A further 28 health professionals are also facing criminal charges. All are charged with felonies or misdemeanours and appear to have been brought to trial solely because they have fulfilled their fundamental ethical undertaking to treat patients according to medical need without discrimination of any kind.Political or judicial interference in this central duty of the medical profession is totally unacceptable. The BMA is also deeply concerned by reports indicating that the proceedings of the military National Safety Court of First Instance do not meet international standards for a fair trial. Events in the Middle East are a reminder that healthcare workers will always be needed in situations of civil unrest, whatever the political background to the conflict. Healthcare professionals are committed to the deepest humanitarian values that transcend factional interests and political differences. - Wine: There's more to Spanish red than rioja | Fiona Beckett
Think beyond the usual suspects in Spain, and you'll find unexpected excitement and a real bargain, tooThe huge popularity of rioja in the UK must be incredibly frustrating for red wine producers in other Spanish regions, particularly when many of them produce wines from the same grape, tempranillo, or variants thereof. There's a lot of exciting wine being made in Spain, as well as some of the wine world's best bargains. It's hard to think of a better basic red, for example, than Utiel-Requena's Toro Loco Tempranillo 2009 (£3.49 at time of writing, which is pre-budget, Aldi; 12.5% abv), which picked up a silver in last year's Decanter World Wine Awards. Ripe, warm and generous, it's the perfect wine for a Friday night pizza. The Wine Society also has a surprisingly wide selection under £7, including one of my perennial favourites, the lush Laderas de El Sequé 2009, a monastrell from Alicante (£6.95; 14%), and Solà Fred 2009 (£6.50; 14%), a vividly fruity old vine carignan from Monsant, the region that borders the prestigious winemaking region of Priorat. The latter is one of a number of wines imported by the enterprising Indigo Wine, which was nominated Spanish specialist merchant of the year in both 2009 and 2010 at the International Wine Challenge. I also love the vibrant Treintamil Maravedies 2008 Vinos de Madrid, from Bodega Marañones (£13.60, Theatre of Wine in London, and No 2 Pound Street, Wendover, Buckinghamshire; 14.5% abv), made from some wonderful organic old vine garnacha, and 12 Volts 2009 from the awardwinning Mallorcan winery 4kilos (£16.57, Ballantynes in Cardiff, £16.95, winedirect.co.uk; 13.5% abv), a supercharged blend of the indigenous callet-fogoneu with syrah, cabernet and merlot which would be perfect for Hugh's pork dish this week.

- Bahrain and Libya expose the two faces of Britain's foreign policy | Ian Birrell
We bombed Gaddafi, but now we court Bahrain. Is our foreign policy based on ethics, or commerce? The air in Tripoli is heady with optimism. After 42 years of repressive and rapacious rule by Muammar Gaddafi, there is a mood of exhilaration despite the water shortages and power cuts that have plagued the city since the collapse of the dictator's regime. There is good cause for hope, even as the search for Gaddafi continues. The sensitive note struck by the country's new leader on Monday night in Martyrs' Square underlines the widespread desire for a better future. Mustafa Abdul Jalil spoke in the place where his predecessor delivered many of his most notorious rants, but the tone could not have been more different, nor the sentiments more encouraging.Problems abound, not least the need to disarm militias with regional loyalties and the difficulties of reviving a resource-rich economy desecrated by one family's kleptocracy without corruption and the creation of a new oligarchy. But for now, Libya has the best chance of emerging the biggest winner from the recent events that have swept north Africa and the Middle East.Britain, along with France and their Nato allies, can take pride in a timely and restrained intervention that prevented a massacre and helped ensure the success of a popular uprising. This is endorsed by graffiti found in towns across Libya thanking David Cameron and Nicolas Sarkozy for their support; both leaders are probably more popular there than in their native lands at present. And they have rescued the cause of liberal interventionism from the morass of Iraq.Given the coalition government's stance on Libya, it is disappointing to witness its myopia over Bahrain. - Transcript: Masoom Stanekzai on peace and the Rabbani assassination
This is a transcript of the highlights of an interview with Masoom Stanekzai, head of the secretariat of the Afghan High Peace Council, about surviving the September bomb assassination of the council's chairman, Burhanuddin Rabbani, and the prospects for peace in its wake:QUESTION: What do you remember of the assassination of Prof Rabbani?MASOOM STANEKZAI: At around 3 pm, President Rabbani's secretary called me to come to see him. I went there and we spent one and a half hours discussing the future of the [peace] programme. He'd just returned from Iran, and we exchanged our updates and he read the message that had been brought by this person, a transcript of the message he had brought [recorded] on his phone. He listened and he said: This is good news and maybe we can have a discussion with the person and discuss it in the executive board of the High Peace Council. So these were the issues we were discussing and I remember his last words were that unless we create a culture of peace in this country we will not succeed, and we have to work to broaden to the scope and make this process more inclusive so that everybody can participate and lessen the relevance of those who are fighting. Then he asked that these people should be brought in from the guest house and before they arrived I went out of the room where his secretary and my assistant were sitting out and I told them not matter whoever is coming they have to be properly checked before they enter in the room. After 20 minutes or something like that they arrived, two people, - [Rahmatullah] Wahidyar was with them. Professor Rabbani stood from his chair and opened his arms and said welcome and I also stood, and they were hugging and I was standing beside them and the blast happened. - Argentina's president, Cristina Kirchner, wins election primary
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner achieves 50% of votes, 38 percentage points ahead of her nearest rival, Raúl AlfonsínArgentina's president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, has taken a major step towards re-election in the country's first national primary. With more than 96% of the ballots counted, Kirchner had just over 50%, the government election authority said. She was nearly 38 percentage points ahead of the closest candidate, the centrist Radical Civic Union party congressman Raúl Alfonsín. The former president Eduardo Duhalde, of a conservative faction of the Peronist party, was third, also with 12%.Sunday's primary elections were a nationwide opinion poll because most parties had already chosen their candidates and voters could cast ballots for any party's candidate. To avoid a runoff, the winning candidate in the October elections must get at least 45% of the vote, or 40% with a lead of at least 10 points over the closest contender. The results showed Kirchner had no real competitor. Her two main opponents, Alfonsín and Duhalde, fared worse than expected, and the electoral law prohibits them from joining forces and forming a new alliance. If Kirchner gets a similar result in the first round of voting on 23 October, she will win a third term for her centre-left faction of the Peronists.Kirchner succeeded her husband, Néstor Kirchner, in 2007. Her victory was widely attributed to popular support for her husband, whom many Argentinians credited with reviving the county's economy after its collapse in 2001, when Argentina suffered an acute financial crisis and defaulted on its sovereign debt.In 2008 her popularity rating fell below 30% after a four-month tax revolt by farmers, an important force in the country. - Help save the hedgehogs this autumn | Colin Taylor
The UK hedgehog population has collapsed. I saved just one – if we all kept an eye out, maybe we could prevent their extinctionWhen the Guardian published a piece about endangered wildlife, it prompted me to write about my own somewhat unexpected relationship with an urban hedgehog.According to Oxford University's wildlife conservation unit, the UK hedgehog population has dipped to about 1.5m compared with 30m in the 1950s. The spiky creatures sometimes breed twice in a year, but autumn babies rarely put on enough weight to survive the winter. One cold December night, I opened the front door to find a small hedgehog on my doorstep. I had heard that they needed to weigh at least 500g to have any chance of surviving, so I put him on my wife's postal scales. He came in at 370g. So there we were – for the next few months, I was responsible for a hedgehog. We called him Dave, because any wild creature is male until proven otherwise (this is a bit sexist I know, but it's traditional). I did learn how to sex them down the line, but I didn't want to mess him about and frankly thought it none of my business. That first night he spent in a small cage in the kitchen. He was not at all happy in it so I bought a big one. Being a wild animal he wasn't happy in that either, but I wasn't going to chuck him out in the snow. Feeding hedgehogs is easy. Cat food. Tinned or dry, both in Dave's case, and sometimes a grape or piece of apple. He loved chicken too and the occasional biscuit. Don't give them bread and milk – lactose is not good for them. They eat slugs too, but they carry a nasty parasite that affects hedgehog lungs. I inadvertently got rid of all his fleas too (if he had any) by burning his newspaper bedding every day, as fleas lay their eggs on it.Eventually Dave weighed over a 英国ハリネズミの人口が崩壊している
- Mogadishu: the children caught between fighting and famine
Driven from their farms by drought, starving Somali families are forced to travel to the wartorn capital in search of foodAs the grasslands surrounding Mogadishu turned to dust, the bombed out shells of once bustling shops in the city became home for farming families and their few surviving animals. The wind swept away the last of the grass, and with it any hopes the land could continue to sustain the people and cattle that relied on it for survival. With no other option, thousands of families walked with their remaining herds to Somalia's war-torn capital. Many have settled with their emaciated children and animals across the road from Bakara market – the frontline of the war against the Islamist group Al Shabaab. The crack of AK-47 gunfire and the whizzing of bullets overhead underlines their desperation. The gunfire does not startle the new inhabitants in their twig and cloth tents as they've become accustomed to the near constant rattle of war.Along the street cows are dragging at the branches of Mogadishu's trees. There is no pasture left for the starving animals. These families consider themselves lucky. On the other side of the city in Medina Hospital are those who don't have any animals left. Five-year-old Akhmad has strength enough to sit up, his seven-year old brother Mahat lies semi-conscious on the hospital floor in front of him, a feeding tube taped to his face.Their mother Raha Abdi Nor sits clutching a sleeping 10-month-old baby, rocking back and forward. The family walked to Mogadishu when the last of their cattle starved to death. - Najiya Murrani obituary
My great-aunt Najiya Murrani, who has died aged 92, was a descendent of a family of Iraq's Mandaeans, an indigenous people from Mesopotamia and the last surviving Gnostics from antiquity. Her book Sabaean Mandaean Concepts has become a reference guide for those interested in learning about this ancient monotheistic religion. It is especially significant as much of what has been written about the Mandaeans has come from outsiders.Najiya was known as a thinker, a researcher, a poet and a true friend. She wrote many books, articles and poems. After retiring from an outstanding teaching career in her birthplace, Iraq's southern city of Amarah, she enrolled at the age of 48 for a degree in English literature at Al-Hikma University in Baghdad. In 1972 she moved to Lebanon to study for an MA in English literature at the American University of Beirut. In 1974 she enrolled for a PhD there but the outbreak of civil war in Lebanon in 1975 forced her to abandon her studies and to return home.Najiya was always dressed elegantly. She spent the mornings researching in her study, where she had a cabinet full of books, encyclopedias and research material. In the evenings, she would sit on the sofa, available to engage in an infinite number of subjects. She was wise and witty, with a large arsenal of tales, old and new, true and fictitious. She never married and had no children of her own, but was an exceptional aunt to all her nephews and nieces, and their children.Iraqguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Stereotypes: the best food in the world
France may be the birthplace of haute cuisine, but it is very easy to eat badly thereIt is possible to eat very, very badly in France – let's nail that one straight away.Overpriced, warmed-through travesties of once-great recipes. Industrial purées, overcooked veg, soggy sauces. It is also true that French cuisine may not be as adventurous, these days, as some of its rivals – some feel it's all a bit staid and stick-in-the-mud.France is blessed – and cursed. It has a remarkable classical culinary repertoire, you see, much of it based on the principles and recipes of masters from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries such as La Varenne, Carême and Escoffier. It is also true that a great many French people are not especially bothered about the quality of what they eat, certainly at home (the French did, after all, pretty much invent the hypermarket). And those legendary wine-irrigated two-hour lunches are, it seems, fast becoming a thing of the past, certainly in Paris: sandwiches, takeaway salads and sushi are more and more the norm. But it remains the case that done properly, with love and respect and care, a really fine French dish represents one of the undisputed pinnacles of human cultural achievement. So seek them out: look for straightforward places with few pretensions and a solid local clientele. One star in the Michelin is a good guide. For it was a Frenchman, the 18th-century writer and all-time original foodie, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who defined what constitutes a rewarding gastronomic experience: the best possible ingredients, simply cooked and eaten in convivial surroundings. And whatever anyone says, measured as a whole – and with the arguable exception of Italy – France still does that better than anyone else.FranceEuropeFood & drinkThe Michelin GuideJon Henl _NULL_
- Food aid is needed desperately - but it is not the answer | Analysis: Helen de Jode
Underneath the high visibility famine lies an age-old way of living that has been disrupted by a modern world systemThe images of Africans affected by the drought in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya paint a grim picture – thousands of people are again in desperate need and are being provided with food aid to allow them to survive. But what the photographs fail to show is the reason why so many people have reached this state of destitution.Underneath the high visibility faminelies an age-old and sustainable way of living that has been disrupted by a modern world system, and whose ability to adapt to the cycle of drought has beenseverely undermined. An estimated 20 million people live in the dryland areas of the Horn of Africa; nomads, or pastoralists, who own livestock and feed themselves, their communities and the regional economy with milk, meat and other livestock products. Pastoralists have lived in the harsh and erratic dryland environments of the Horn for centuries, surviving its regular and repeated cycle of droughts through their unique production strategy that depends on mobility. While a farmer waits for the rain to arrive, a pastoralist moves to where the rain has already been – feeding their on the new grazing opportunities and accessing the water sources. Complex social systems that cross national borders, and the reserving of key areas of land for drought periods, have traditionally ensured that pastoralists have adapted to the extreme climatic variability they face. But in recent decades vast areas of the pastoralist land in the Horn of Africa have been taken over by agriculture and large-scale commercial farms – often in the key strategic riverine areas previously reserved for times of drought. This has undermined the whole system and reduced yields of milk and _NULL_

- The Cameron and Obama BBQ – the rules
It is brave of the Camerons to invite the Obamas to a barbecue at Downing Street. What do they need to know?Political barbecues are as old as American politics: the convivial atmosphere and free food was used to lure the public to stump speeches. An 1834 cartoon titled The Political Barbecue shows President Andrew Jackson being roasted on the flames of public opinion. So it is a daring act for the Camerons to invite the Obamas to a barbecue at Downing Street. How do these quintessentially American summits work? The cook The announcement that Michele Obama and Samantha Cameron would co-host the Downing Street cookout is a basic error. Not only is the barbecue meant to be a man's thing, it is traditional for the leader to be seen in informal, man-of-people mode, poised over the hot coals with some tongs in hand. It demonstrates both humility and a certain surprising competence, like when the Queen suddenly does the washing up at Balmoral. Once the picture's been taken you can let the caterers get on with it.The food In the old days, a whole pig. Latterly steaks, hamburgers and hot dogs, maybe some chicken. There should be no vegetarian option, except for corn on the cob.The clothes Studiedly casual – the sort of look Tony Blair could never quite pull off. If you're cooking, an apron. Obama has a cool one with the presidential seal on it. I can't imagine what Cameron's equivalent would look like. Maybe a picture of Nick Clegg with a line through it.The guests Once upon a time, a mix of celebrities, politicians and country musicians. Nowadays, worthy or heroic members of the public. The Downing Street barbecue is being held for decorated British and American soldiers. The conversation Informal and apolitical. - Ireland's love of print can survive the worst of recessions
This is a small country of 4.5 million but these are people who buy newspapersIreland will soon play host to the Queen and Barack Obama – like all good US presidents, Obama claims Irish descent. Visit Dublin's newspaper offices, and you find they're betting which of the two will provide a greater bump to sales. Presidents, though, come here all the time; the smart money is that Her Majesty will win out. Already the special supplements are appearing, with orange and green images of the monarch in the republican country across the water. Prepare too for the pageantry, the history and of course, the present – the image of Ireland today, the unfinished house on the deserted, rubbish-strewn estate. In 30 seconds of news, this is what a modern day recession looks like.If this is the bottom for an economy, it must too be the bottom for media. Property advertising is down by between 80% and 95% from the peak four years ago, a fall so severe it is best described as cruel. The Irish Times – owned by a trust in the fashion of the Guardian – is losing, it is estimated, at least €1m (£870,000) a month and probably more. In a market crowded not just with local players but British entrants, the Sunday Tribune lost out, shut by its funder, Independent News & Media, as losses mounted and circulation fell. Yet, for all the real dislocation, it's not as bad as the half-built image suggests.Nobody is so bold as to call it the bottom. But – just as happened in the UK in the downturn – the retailers are still furiously advertising, in pursuit of the last euro in the shops. There is talk of stabilisation in the newspaper business in 2012 – with television reviving ahead of that. Look, too, at other numbers. - Claude Choules obituary
Sailor who was the last surviving combatant of the first world warClaude Choules, who has died aged 110, was the last known combat veteran of the first world war, during which he served in the Royal Navy. He witnessed two historic events at the end of the conflict. He was present at the surrender of the imperial German navy at the Firth of Forth, off Scotland's east coast, on 21 November 1918, 10 days after the armistice, and at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, on 21 June 1919, when the German Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter ordered his interned fleet to be scuttled. Preventive action limited the scuttling to 52 of the 74 ships. These included 10 battleships, five battlecruisers, five cruisers and 32 destroyers.Choules migrated to Australia in 1926 and, during the second world war, he served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as a senior demolition expert in Western Australia. Early in the war, he identified and disposed of the first German mine to wash up on Australian shores, near Esperance. With Japan on the rampage in 1942, he set explosives to blow up oil tanks and placed depth charges in ships unable to leave Fremantle harbour in anticipation of a Japanese landing. Had the Japanese invaded, he would have had the improbable task of riding a bicycle about 500km south to Albany to blow up harbour facilities there, too.Choules, who held dual British and Australian nationality, was born at Wyre Piddle, Pershore, in Worcestershire. His father, Henry, was a haberdasher, and his mother, Madelin, became an actor. His mother abandoned the family when he was young – for many years, he thought she had died – and his older brothers, Douglas and Leslie, were sent to different family homes while his father raised Claude and his sisters, Phyllis and Gwen. - Nuclear hopes help Tokyo shares as BoJ pumps funds
Tokyo stocks closed 4.36 percent higher Tuesday, helped by signs of progress in containing Japan's post-quake nuclear crisis, as the Bank of Japan pumped nearly $25 billion more into the market. The Nikkei index added 401.57 points to end at 9,608.32. The Topix index gained 37.74 points, or 4.54 percent, to 868.13But dealers warned any fragile optimism would quickly erode on signs of a setback in the delicate operations to restore power to overheating reactors at the Fukushima atomic plant, which was crippled by a March 11 quake and tsunami.
- Faced with tsunami and revolution, you have to choose one above the other
The momentous events of the past week have shown that it is impossible to respond to two cries for help simultaneouslyThere are several things to say about the momentous coverage of two momentous stories this past week. That while ordinary people have fled Japan's danger areas and Libya's battlezones, journalists – sometimes at real peril to themselves – have tried to go to the heart of the crises. That the investment in news, particularly television news, has been overwhelming. That it has been a sustained effort of vivid reportage and (mostly) rational analysis. But there's also a question. How do you choose between Story A, in which a tsunami kills thousands and threatens a disastrous nuclear meltdown, and Story B, in which a berserk Arab dictator, threatened by democratic revolution, sets his forces marching on a city where a million vulnerable people live? And the answer is that there had to be a choice. The tsunami and its aftermath was every Hollywood nightmare rolled into one. Libya, inevitably, slipped down schedules and onto inside pages. The pressure – let's face it, the media pressure – to get no-fly restrictions and more in place abated until Benghazi seemed on the brink of falling.Well, this week will tell us what happens next. But the problem revealed is the simple difficulty of chronicling two world events in parallel – of telling a story of true horror now happening and, out there in the desert, of horrors about to happen. You can't have frontline people in two places at the same time. You can't take in two cries for help simultaneously. Forget the natural balance of coverage: it doesn't really exist.Japan disasterLibyaNewspapers & magazinesTelevision industryPeter Prestonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is s 今週の重大な出来事は、2つに対応することは不可能であることが示されているヘルプの叫びsimultaneouslyThere二重大な話今週の重大な報道について言って、いくつかのものです

- What The Next Owner Of The Detroit Pistons Can Learn From Bill Davidson
In 1974, William “Bill” Davidson, Mr. D. as he was affectionately known, entered the professional sports scene when he bought the Detroit Pistons. His $8 million investment eventually turned into a sports and entertainment empire. At its height the franchise was valued at $479 million. More recently, Forbes calculated its value at $360 million.
Mr. D died in 2009 and his passing felt like the death of a longtime friend or relative. While I never personally knew Mr. D, I get chocked up when I think about him and how much he meant to his players, Pistons fans, and professional sports. He was the face of the team and you can't think about DEE-TROOIT BASKETBALL without thinking of him.
His widow, Karen Davidson, took over as the principle owner nearly two years ago and she wasn’t shy about her desire to sell the team. Davidson publicly stated that the team was her husband’s “baby” and it did not deserve an absentee owner. 。
Davidson hoped to sell the team by the start of the 2010-2011 NBA season, and as the all-star break approaches a deal still isn’t in place. There is hope that the Pistons will start the second-half of the season with a new owner. Recently, Tom Gores, a Michigan native and California financier, entered an exclusive 30-day negotiation period to purchase the team from Davidson. Last week it was announced that Davidson and Gores added an additional 14 days to the exclusivity period.
If the deal goes through, there’s no question that Gores will have big shoes to fill, and a long list of tasks ready for him the minute he is given the keys to “The Palace.” 。
