Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray has pled not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, and there are few who believe that the charge can ever be made to stick. But that's hardly the point. The US has woken up to the fact that addictive drugs are not magically transformed into soothing medicines just because they are medically prescribed. Michael Jackson may have been an extreme case – in this and all other matters – but the recent deaths of the actors Heath Ledger and Brittany Murphy confirm that his was by no means a unique case.The famous, and the wealthy of course, are able to attract the attentions of private doctors who are only too willing to pander to their neuroses for money or for prestige. But the underlying issue is closely bound up with attitudes to drug use more generally – with legal being good and illegal being bad. Celebrities may have the means to score highs and lows within the law, but it is the wider culture that persuades them that a drug that is legitimately purchased can be abused with impunity.It's not so simple. All drugs are safe if regulated carefully. All drugs are dangerous, if used cavalierly. Like every inanimate object under the sun, they are only dangerous in the wrong hands. Drugs are not evil, any more than a box-cutter is evil. It's always about how you are taking them, and why. If a doctor is procuring and administering drugs, without understanding or addressing his patient's hows and whys, then he's a not a doctor. He did this to provide Democratic congressman Bart Stupak the political cover he needed to vote for healthcare reform. Apparently, some people have said this executive order makes Stupak the hero of healthcare reform. It's a sad statement on American politics that working to defeat a piece of legislation that has the potential to bring health insurance (and thus better care) to millions of Americans – its other, many flaws aside – can ultimately lead to someone being labelled a hero.Until the law goes into effect in 2014 with the other provisions involving the healthcare exchange, two classes of women are covered by the Hyde Amendment and its lesser known cousin: women who are reliant on Medicaid, and women employed by (or covered by a spouse or domestic partner who is employed by) the federal government. Neither woman can have an abortion covered by their insurance company unless they wish to tell their insurer that the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest (which currently can and often is classified as a pre-existing condition, leaving one at risk of losing one's healthcare) or unless the government agrees that the abortion is necessary to save the woman's life or health. We are alarmed that once again the authorities are trying to obstruct anti-war protests in Hyde Park. In February 2003 we were told we were not allowed to march against the invasion of Iraq because we might damage the grass. Now the Stop the War Coalition, CND and the British Muslim Initiative have been told marchers against the war in Afghanistan cannot assemble at Speakers' Corner on 20 November because they might cause an obstruction to people attending a Winter Wonderland event taking place half a mile away. It is not acceptable that protesters should be excluded from this space for purely commercial considerations. My father, Professor Syed Mohammed Naseer, who has died aged 81, was a teacher and leftwing thinker of unwavering commitment. Though he spent most of his life in Pakistan, he was born in Rai Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, south of India's border with Nepal. When independence and partition came in 1947, he was a student in the nearby city of Kanpur. The following year he became general secretary of the All India Students Federation, the student wing of the Communist party of India (CPI).In 1949 he became a CPI activist and was jailed till 1953, when he gained a BA as a private candidate. He then took an MA in economics, despite what one of his teachers pointed to as his three disqualifications – being a Muslim, a Shia and a communist. Syed left for Pakistan in 1955, and married Nargis Katoon. He was appointed a lecturer at Sindh College of Commerce, Hyderabad, that year, and in 1966 principal of New Aligarh College, in Tando Adam, to the northeast of the city. Further posts followed in Karachi, Sindh's – and Pakistan's – largest city, and in 1982 Syed gained a master's in education at Alcorn State University, Mississippi. After reaching normal retirement age, he continued to teach at universities in Karachi until the age of 80.India regarded him as a diehard revolutionary, and would not grant him a visa to return until 1999. The chief security adviser commented that a professor who had turned 70 could scarcely be considered a threat, which made his visit the subject of great newspaper and television interest.Syed wrote articles for the Pakistani press, and was popular in literary and scholarly circles, particularly with young writers.
