    • Business Diary: The gift that every banker needs
Are you searching for the perfect Christmas present for the banker in your life? Does he have apersonalised number plate (we say he, because women generally have more sense)? If not, the Diary notes that a selection of appropriate registrations are on sale just now, for prices starting from around £10,000. What about B1G 5H0RT, or EZ3 M0NY, for example? Alternatively, if you're buying for someone who is just a little bit self-aware, maybe they'd like GR3 3DY. • Philippine bishop says Santa stealing Christmas
A senior bishop in the Philippines' dominant Catholic Church has accused Santa Claus of stealing the true spirit of Christmas, which he said is deteriorating into a shopping frenzy. In comments published by a Roman Catholic website on Friday, Teodoro Bacani, a newly retired Manila bishop, said Santa Claus now had too much appeal in the Philippines, where eight in 10 people are baptised Catholics.

    • Is this the 2010 Christmas video hit?
How Norwegian TV producers managed to persuade this disparate group of celebrities to lip-sync the Beatles' hit Let It Be is a mystery. It is surely the first - and only - time you'll see Roger Moore, John Nettles (Bergerac), Gorden Kaye ('Allo 'Allo) and Boyzone singing along with Kelly McGillis, Glenn Close, Kathleen Turner and Jason Alexander (George in Seinfeld) plus a host of others. Why? • All the president's emails
In a unique experiment in democratic transparency, Barack Obama – a BlackBerry owner, and the first American president to use email while in office – has agreed to copy G2 in on his otherwise highly confidential electronic communications. Each week, we present a selection from recent daysTo: Hillary Clinton Subject: Re: spies like us First priority, cease all cables from embassies until further notice. Second, make amends to UN. Tell them we never intended for our diplomats to snoop. Say we just wanted to get hold of their frequent flyer numbers so that – this is off the top of my head – we could add more miles to their accounts, as a gift, but anonymously, so it's not a bribe. Say it's something we do every Christmas. Lastly, promise Ban Ki Moon we'll never spy on him again, and then find out from our spies whether he buys it. We can weather this. Keep me posted, with full deniability. B To: John Boehner I'm glad we're working together on this thing at last. As we've all learned this week, Russia is basically a dysfunctional kleptocracy controlled by the mafia and led by a psychopath hellbent on enriching himself at the expense of world stability. We need to nail them to some kind of promise while they're still in a position to keep it. This is bigger than politics. America needs us, John. Warmly, Barack. To: Vladimir Putin Vlad – any minute now your intel people are going to flag up an email from me to Boehner. Ignore it – it's just political stuff. He's scared stiff, and I want to keep it that way. Best, Barack. To: Louis Susman Subject: Re: UK going to totally lose world cup bid, btw . . . Louis – while I appreciate that the normal channels have been compromised, I don't think email is the best way to send stuff like this. • David Prosser: Don't believe the retail industry when it says the high street is booming
Outlook: So is it going to be a Merry Christmas for Britain's retailers? The high street will be busy today, enabling retailers to say customers are flooding in. You'll see a flurry of claims about record sales, rising footfall and shortages of must-have goods. This is psychological warfare. Get the message out that everyone else is splurging, retailers reason, and reluctant shoppers will feel the need to join them. • Christmas dangers for dogs
Piercing pine needles, broken baubles, poisonous chocolate – the festive season can be perilous for FidoI haven't read a survey I liked more since the one that said one in four British vets have treated a drunk dog. So anyway, how about this: 79% of dog owners get fake Christmas trees to avoid injury to their dogs. My mind filled with intoxicating images of labradors trying to do a wee against a real tree, knocking it over, breaking the window and being pelted with broken glass and maybe snow. In fact, the main problem is that they get pine needles stuck in their paws. So it's not dramatic, but it's not very nice, and you still have to go to the vet.The website that conducted the survey – dogsblog.com, which is very useful if you want to rehome a dog, or look at cute pictures of dogs – helpfully compiled the top-five festive dangers to dogs. In with a bullet at number one is chocolate, for the possible theobromine poisoning. Number two is antifreeze – I was just about to be more precise, but you don't need to know what's in it, all you need to know is that it's blue and you shouldn't drink it. Then pine needles, glass decorations and crowded kitchens. To this expert advice, I will add the top-five festive dog-dangers that I have observed: broken glass in gutters, dropped by drunken idiots probably wearing flashing deely boppers and thinking that's funny; drunken idiots in your own house, dropping things on your dog; dogs eating tinsel or silver foil, then having to expel them later (I'm not sure that this is dangerous, but it looks uncomfortable); dogs being dressed as Santa (it's humiliating; and also, unrealistic, because a reindeer would never obey a dog); and finally, dogs straightforwardly overeating.Poor mutts, they think Bonfire Night is bad, but yule is far more

    • Letters: It's the little things you remember
After all these years of thinking we got through the war with no fuss or trauma, your G2 edition (The blitz: 70 years on, the survivors remember, 7 September) has produced a strange shakiness. It's the little things. In 1940, there were no toys in the shops so parents set up a swap system for Christmas presents. My china doll Betty, with blue eyes that opened and shut, went to four-year-old Paddy, whose parents lived in a flat over the chemist's shop. Soon afterwards, Paddy was killed when people were caught in a stick of bombs as they ran to the public shelter. Her mother asked if the doll could be buried in Paddy's grave, as she had treasured it. I said yes, of course – to refuse would be unthinkable. There were worse things later – the oil bomb, the incendiary that came through the roof, Mr Thrower getting his head blown off by a doodlebug. The V2 rocket that had just fallen when I came home from school. But it's the thought of the perfect china face deep under the earth beside Paddy that somehow makes my heart constrict. Like I say, the little things.Alison PrinceWhiting Bay, Isle of Arran• Thank you for publishing the cheerfully heroic reminiscences of the blitz. The second world war generation seems to have come to quietly accept being either completely disregarded, or being sneered at and treated with condescending disrespect, by every form of media, the advertising industry and politicians of all parties. It's a very good thing for us they did not keep quiet when Hitler demanded they grovel, and then went on to help win the war and elect Attlee's great government.Chris HardyLondon• I grew up with the stories of the blitz – the death, destruction, bravery, fear and failure. What happened to my family adversely affected my whole childhood and later life.

    • What has Carla Bruni-Sarkozy started with her big Woody Allen break? | Stuart Heritage
As France's first lady makes her big-screen debut, we look at which film roles would best suit her international counterpartsCarla Bruni-Sarkozy is the first lady all other first ladies aspire to be. Always impeccably turned out, with enough sophistication, personal history and physical stature to ensure she'll never be overshadowed by her husband, she's living proof you don't have to pack your life into a box just because you're married to a world leader. Where Carla Bruni-Sarkozy goes, her contemporaries follow.Which means that we should all probably brace ourselves for a flurry of first-lady films soon. This is down to the much-publicised bit-part Bruni-Sarkozy has landed opposite Owen Wilson in the new Woody Allen film, Midnight in Paris. So what if, as some reports suggest, it took Bruni 35 takes to silently walk into a shop with a baguette in her hand? All that matters is that she's a legitimate film star now, and that her international counterparts are all secretly desperate to copy her. But which ones? And what would they star in? Time to assess the movie-making potential of other first ladies (and gentlemen) ...Samantha Cameron – If ever there was a woman born to star in a Richard Curtis film, it's Samantha Cameron. She ticks all the boxes. She's posh, she's British, she lives in Notting Hill (well, used to) and Hugh Grant has already played a less annoying version of her husband. Throw in a scene of her crying in an airport on Christmas Day and there you have it – the world's first Samcamromcom.Michelle Obama – As a high-earning law school graduate, you might think Michelle Obama would be above something as tacky as the movie industry. Then again, look at her famously well-toned arms. Guns like that are crying out to be cast in an action film; maybe a remake

    • Yemen bomb 'defused 17 minutes before it was set to go off'
French interior minister says one of two computer printer devices found on cargo planes had been less than 20 minutes from explodingOne of two mail bombs sent from Yemen last week was defused only 17 minutes before it was set to explode, the French interior minister said today.Brice Hortefeux provided no other details in an interview on France's state-run France-2 television, and did not say where he had got the information about the timing. When investigators took the Chicago-bound packages off cargo planes in England and the United Arab Emirates on Friday, they found the bombs wired to mobile phones and hidden in the toner cartridges of computer printers. The communication cards had been removed and the phones could not receive calls, US officials said, making it likely that the terrorists intended the alarm or timer functions to detonate the bombs. They also said each bomb was attached to a syringe containing lead azide, a chemical initiator that would have detonated the PETN explosives packed into each printer cartridge. Both PETN and a syringe were used in the failed bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner last Christmas.Officials have centred their investigation on the Yemeni al-Qaida faction's top bomb maker, who had designed the airliner bomb that failed to go over over Detroit. This time, authorities believe Ibrahim al-Asiri packed four times as much explosives into the bombs hidden on the flights from Yemen. The two bombs contained 300 and 400g of PETN, according to a German security official, who briefed reporters in Berlin on Monday. In comparison, the bomb hidden in a terror suspect's underwear on the Detroit-bound plane contained about 80g.One of the explosive devices found inside a shipped printer cartridge in Dubai had flown on two airlines before it was seized – f

Man apprehended in Amsterdam en route from Liverpool to Uganda after tip-off from UK authoritiesA British man has been arrested at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on suspicion of possible involvement in terrorism, Dutch authorities said today. The man, of Somali origin, was held after flying in from Liverpool en route to Entebbe in Uganda. He was detained by Dutch military police while sitting on an aircraft that was ready to depart. The arrest followed a tip-off from UK authorities. The man is suspected of possible involvement with an unspecified foreign terrorist organisation.Security at the airport was beefed up this year after the abortive Christmas Day terrorism attack involving Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a British-educated Nigerian. He attempted to detonate explosives in his underwear shortly before his flight from Schiphol to Detroit landed, before being tackled by passengers and crew. The apparent plot led to plans for many airports, including in the UK, to install full body image scanners to detect concealed explosives.Last month, two Yemeni men were arrested at Schiphol after flying in from Chicago, on suspicion they may have been conducting a dry run for an airline terror attack. • 3D television's early adopters: To buy or not to buy?
The principal message is: don't hurry to buy one unless you delight in getting the first version of thingsHave you bought a digital TV? Dithered over buying a high definition TV, and then wondered whether you were getting any high definition content? Felt puzzled by Blu-ray DVDs, and whether they would look better on your old TV or your HD TV? Get ready for another round of confusion as 3D TV rushes closer – beginning with the World Cup this year, a dedicated Sky Sports channel in 2011 and the Olympics in 2012.The principal message is: don't hurry to buy one unless you delight in getting the first version of things. Adam May, a producer with 3D producers and consultants Vision 3, says TV companies have started showing interest in making programmes in 3D; but the big push to sell the sets will come this Christmas. But right now, the easy way to find out if you need or want a 3D set is to look at your household bills. Is there a huge monthly payment to Sky Sports there? If so, then maybe you do want 3D because it has already started broadcasting. Otherwise, just wait: the prices are going to fall, as they do with all consumer electronics as volume, and production quality, rises. That's not the message that Sony and Samsung will want you to hear, but the introduction of any new technology for displaying a new form of content is always a chicken-and-egg challenge: why push the content if nobody can watch it? But why sell the gear if there's no content? Sky clearly sees a way to accelerate the process through sports (which clearly benefit from 3D, just as action films do; nobody is proposing to splurge on a 3D version of Lark Rise to Candleford). The best thing to do is sit on your hands until there's both content you want and a set you can afford. In the end, it's only televis

    • DADT repeal now basically dead | Michael Tomasky
This is big news, via Brian Beutler:Just hours after Democrats and Republicans agreed to bargain on tax cuts, and fewer hours still after Defense Secretary Robert Gates implored Congress to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell this year, word leaked that Republicans aren't really interested in any of it -- a major repudiation of Gates' authority.According to a letter delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this morning, Republicans will block all debate on all legislation until the tax cut impasse is bridged and the federal government has been fully funded -- even if it means days tick by and the Senate misses its opportunity to pass DADT, an extension of unemployment insurance and other Dem items. All 42 GOP senators signed this letter, which you can see here (and check out that crazy signature on page three, third one down, right-hand column - it looks like a Kandinsky). What this means first of all is that don't ask don't tell repeal is basically dead. All the Republicans I cited a couple posts down as potential votes for it have obviously now signed this letter saying that no business will be considered until the tax cuts are done, and the tax cuts are going to take (in all likelihood, I believe) basically all the time they have right up until Christmas. So I think that's probably dead now.Second, and maybe more interestingly than that, Mitch McConnell was working on this letter yesterday. In other words, at the same time he was meeting with Obama and agreeing that he and other Republicans would sit down with Tim Geithner and Jack Lew (the new OMB director) to work on compromise language on the tax cuts, McConnell was also getting all 42 Republicans to sign on to a letter that says plainly and emphatically, we are not compromising (read the letter's third graf). Our unemployment benefits are due to expire next week, but it's not handouts that the 15 million out of work Americans wantA report out Wednesday showed that new jobless claims declined slightly last week, but this is hardly reassuring to the millions of Americans who are spending this Thanksgiving still unemployed. I am one of those who will lose benefits when they expire next week – 5 days after the holiday. As it happens, I am among the lucky ones – I was laid off just under two years ago, and so I was eligible for 99 weeks of benefits – the maximum amount. Those who were laid off after me will get far less: if Congress does not act, the maximum number of weeks available will be 26. Thanksgiving, for us, will be fraught with tension. We will sit at tables with family members, some of whom will be proudly announcing their latest success at work. We are the losers, the rejected, the left-out, the forgotten, the silent. We are ashamed in front of our children, not because we cannot pay for gifts, summer camp, after-school activities. That, I think, they understand. But because we are failures. While we encourage them to excel in school, our own degrees are worthless. Websites and newspapers are filled with stories about the Black Friday sales – you can actually buy things on Thanksgiving day this year! And after Thanksgiving, there will be Hanukkah and Christmas. I get a stomach-ache watching the commercials on television. The secretary of labour has said that by spring, an additional 4 million Americans will have joined the ranks of those unemployed who do not receive benefits. The unemployment rate is still at 9.6%, and there are almost 15 million Americans without jobs. It will take much more than a dip in jobless claims to put back to work all those who are desperate

    • Q&A: US healthcare reform bill
The details behind Barack Obama's controversial healthcare legislationWhat was the vote about? The US does not have a universal public programme of healthcare akin to the NHS in the UK. Some 200 million Americans rely on employer-provided healthcare, while around 30 million purchase expensive private health insurance. Others rely on government programmes for the poor, elderly and veterans. The healthcare bill passed last night will extend care to 32 million more people, predominantly the poorest, giving the country 95% coverage. It will require most Americans to purchase health insurance and provide higher subsidies to those who cannot afford it, meaning more are insured. What happens next? The Senate had already passed the health bill on Christmas Eve. The House of Representatives vote means Barack Obama can now sign off the bill, which he could do as early as tomorrow. However, in passing the legislation the house also passed a companion bill, which contained some changes to the bill the Senate passed. The Senate must now pass this companion bill. What's in and what's out of the final bill? Obama had to promise that public funds would not be used for abortions, to win over a group of 10 anti-abortion Democrats, led by Bart Stupak. As a result, taxpayers' money can only be used to fund abortions after incest or rape. The issue was important to some Democrats in the mid-west who, with elections looming in November, were anxious about whether voters would punish any action seen to be pro-abortion. Another significant factor was getting fiscally conservative Democrats to back the bill. The announcement from the Congressional Budget Office, a research body, that health reform would cost $940bn (£627bn), which was less than had been expected, appears to have done the trick.

    • Eiji Kusuhara obituary
Beguiling Japanese star of fringe theatre and popular televisionThe Japanese actor Eiji Kusuhara, who has died of cancer aged 63, played the sadistic Lieutenant Sato in the television series Tenko (1981-85), was one of the narrators on the cult show Banzai (2001) and appeared on stages across the UK and Europe in a variety of beguiling roles. He was one of the first professional Japanese actors active in London in the 1970s and enjoyed something of a monopoly on roles until he starred alongside a fellow countryman, Togo Igawa, in The Man Who Shot Christmas (1984). Eiji spent most of his adult life in Britain. He always seemed relieved to have left his home country but was also perplexed by British culture. A natural comedian, he thought he was a misfit and constructed an endlessly playful persona for himself. He was born in Tokyo shortly after the second world war, a time when poor provisions and facilities meant that many babies died. Eiji was one of four children born to Ryoichi and Yasuko Kusuhara. Their first son died at three days old. Eiji was a weak, sickly baby and his parents waited to see if he would survive before they registered his birth. When Eiji was nine, his sister, Ikue, was part of a teenage suicide pact with her boyfriend.Eiji was brought up in Hokkaido, where his father had a jewellery shop. He went to Iwamizawa East high school in Hokkaido before going on to study acting at Tama Art University in Tokyo. After graduation, he was a member of the Neo Literature Theatre company and then joined the Tokyo Kid Brothers. This company, formed by Yutaka Higashi in 1968, was part of the underground theatre movement and the style of rock music used in its shows was profoundly anti-establishment.I first met Eiji in 1972 when the Kid Brothers broug

    • South Africa's World Cup can make education a reality for all | George Weah
Africa's future depends on education for its children and the global spotlight of the World Cup can help this dream come trueFive years ago, at the age of 38, I went back to school. I had played football for 20 years for some of the best clubs in the world but had never had the chance to finish my education. So I moved to Florida and enrolled at Devry University. I am majoring in Business Administration and will be graduating next summer with a bachelor degree.I am one of the lucky ones; I can afford to pay for my education and can travel to the United States to get it. It was not always like this for me. When I was growing up in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, I sold doughnuts, popcorn and Cool Aid every day after school so that my family had some money and I could pay my school fees. It was a tough life. My father died when I was young and I was raised by my grandmother, Emma Klonjlaleh Brown. We could afford to eat chicken just once a year – at Christmas.Football gave me a chance that few other Liberians have had. Around 80% of Liberians are unemployed and only half of all children go to primary school. Just one in 20 go on to secondary school. Young children are on the streets instead of in the classrooms. We are not giving them the opportunity to learn and they will struggle to get jobs when they grow up. Without proper education, Liberia will not progress. It is a similar story across the continent. I believe education should be a right for every child but tragically in many parts of world it is a privilege for certain children whose parents have money. There are 72 million children in the world who don't go to school and many of them are in Africa. There is nothing as important as education. It prepares you for your long-term goals. • Canada – a linguistic battleground between the US and Britain | Mind your language
As a Canadian living in London, I am caught between ancient British roots and the new American order laid down by Webster in his dictionary. Where should my loyalties lie?A few years ago I moved to the United Kingdom from the Canadian prairies. This was a luxury I was afforded via two grandparents who were born in Britain, ensuring my access to the elusive ancestry visa. Many Canadians still feel a greater allegiance to our colonial British roots than to our neighbours to the south; the monarchy is still represented on our money and most Canadians are well versed in singing God Save the Queen. We even toast Her Majesty at most fancy public events.Despite these and other symbols of allegiance, however, Canadians continue to hold on to some ambivalence over our British roots through our generally inconsistent use of language. While gazing at our commemorative Princess Diana spoons and watching the Queen's Christmas Message every December, we are still uncommitted when it comes to our geopolitical allegiance to language. Just as we often straddle international conflicts by playing the peacekeeper, most Canadians sit on the fence, moving interchangeably between American and British spellings. If there's anything notable about our use of language, it's that we are pretty lackadaisical about it.Before the American Revolution, everyone in North America was formally governed by the United Kingdom, except for a region in eastern Canada that was held by France. Following America's independence, there was a movement towards differentiating its unique culture from that of Britain. This was a major inspiration for Noah Webster, the man behind the dictionary that decisively set out a new order in American spelling and style. • The City has been surprisingly well-behaved | Will Hutton
Don't blame the financial markets. The people have spoken, not the bond marketThere will be scapegoats aplenty over the months ahead about why the attempted Lib-Lab coalition failed at the first, but one cannot be the financial markets. If the stock market fell some 15% over the last fortnight it was not a conspiracy to frighten voters into voting Conservative or Nick Clegg to strike a coalition government deal with David Cameron. It was because there was a real and growing risk that the euro might break up.In the event the $750bn package agreed over the weekend has bought the euro some relief - and if the stock market fell today by 1% it had jumped 5% on Monday in relief at the scale of the package. The interesting feature of the last three months has not been the pound's and gilt markets' weakness - but their relative strength. Given the power of the rating agencies and the stage army of largely conservative inclined City economic analysts what has been surprising is how little rather than how much sabre-rattling about mountainous deficits and debt downgrades there has been – despite an avalanche of reporters hunting for the killer quote. That during the campaign and now over five days of negotiations only a team from BNP Paribas has - rather sillily - talked about a downgrade of UK debt is remarkable. The City has been surprisingly well-behaved.There are two reasons. Firstly, for two or three months the news on the deficit has all been good; the deficit in 2009/10 net of buying the bank stakes is some £155bn, well short of the scary £200bn numbers bandied about before Christmas. The recovery is strengthening. Fixing the deficit will be unpleasant, but in the UK the party or parties with a majority in the house of commonds can do what is necessary - as long as there

    • Rail strike: sharp end of the law
Decision to call off strike is a relief for rail users and Gordon Brown, who needed the dispute like a hole in the headThe calling off of next week's rail strike is good news for the railways, for those who depend on them to get to work and for those who were planning to use them for recreation during the Easter holidays. The decision is also a relief to Gordon Brown, who needed a rail strike at the start of the general election campaign like he needs a hole in the head. This strike was neither a good way of running a railway, nor the right way of ensuring that staff grievances are properly addressed. There is a lot wrong about Britain's railways and the public is often quite sympathetic to the workers' case. But the leader of the rail workers' RMT union, Bob Crow, is much too trigger-happy with industrial threats and confrontation at the public's expense. He has another one brewing on the London Underground as well as others on the railways too. The two sides should take this opportunity to get back round the table and negotiate a solution.Mr Crow issued a characteristically belligerent response to Mrs Justice Sharp's decision in the high court yesterday afternoon to grant an injunction to Network Rail halting the strike because of balloting irregularities by the RMT. The courts, he claimed, had launched an attack on the whole trade union movement by their decision. This is an exaggeration. No union that conducts its ballots properly according to the reasonable requirements of the law – as most do, and as the RMT has done in the past – would be in danger of being injuncted. Nevertheless, the court's decision, especially in the wake of a similar ruling in the case of the BA cabin crew dispute last Christmas, does raise real concerns, not just abo
