- Labour's organising roots | Luke Bretherton
David Miliband is right to highlight the power of community organising, a power that often has religion at its foundationThrough his movement for change David Miliband has made community organising the basis for what he hopes will be a renewal of the Labour movement. This raises the question of what the relationship is between Labour and community organising. It turns out they share a common ancestry. In the American and British contexts forms of popular, local self-organisation and common action emerged within such movements as the anti-slavery and abolitionist movements, the chartists and the temperance movement. These were aligned and had a symbiotic relationship with popular religion. Whether it was Methodism, working class Catholicism or the Shtetl movement in Judaism, popular forms of religiosity were a key social force generating the practices and common values vital for such grass roots activism. We see this confluence embodied in a figure like Keir Hardie, RH Tawney and Cardinal Manning – Manning was of course central to the 1889 London dockers strike, a turning point in the history of the British labour movement, as well as being founder of the Catholic temperance society. It resurfaced on 3 May this year at the CitizensUK event when Gordon Brown connected to his Presbyterian and Labour roots and gave the speech of the campaign, if not his career. What all such movements shared is a commitment to the priority of relationships – family, friendship, and neighbourhood – and the commitment to a common set of values – taking responsibility, hard work, loyalty (what religious people call faithfulness), reciprocity and the dignity of the individual. What these movements represent, and what they feed into community organising and the unions, is the assertion of the prio
- Let them wear burqas
I dislike the burqa intensely, but if women want to wear them, I don't think the law should interveneScary political stuff is going on in France, with plans to ban the burqa steadily advancing. Women covering their faces of their own volition will be fined, and men who force women to cover their faces will be imprisoned. (The possibility that women might sometimes feel under pressure to wear the burqa from other women – such as older members of their family – appears to have escaped acknowledgement.)I suppose it is always worth repeating that face-covering is not an Islamic prescription, any more than genital mutilation. But one does so wearily, since so many Islamists are enthusiastic about defending this divisive tradition.Properly devout Muslims would not dream of forcing burqas on anyone. Loose, modest dress, with hair and throat covered, is the only religious requirement, and many Muslims feel comfortable with rejecting even this level of prescription. Frankly, Sharia ought to protect women from being forced into burqas anyway, without western law being needed as well.Although I dislike the burqa intensely, and can't help flinching at the sight of it, I cannot imagine circumstances under which I would like to see women lawfully obliged to desist from wearing one if they genuinely felt they wanted to. Unappealing and perversely attention-seeking as the practice is, it does no cataclysmic harm to anyone but the wearer – and even that's debatable.IslamFranceWomenDeborah Orrguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

- Yoga expert: 'It seems idiotic they can patent it'
Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati argues that Indian government's attempt to create a rigid system of yoga misses the pointThe 64,000 postures form only a tiny part of yoga. Poses are not an end in themselves, but a preparation for deeper, more meaningful practices. The word yoga means oneness and unity – unity with the self. Discover who you are, and then that can give you a sense of oneness with others and ultimately the whole of creation, and the divine.Poses are not the definition of yoga, which consists of breathing practices, deep relaxation, and meditative practices – not just postures. There's a whole yoga to do with mantras, another to do with music.I would definitely give anyone trying to patent any postures a very wide berth. They haven't invented anything. The practices and traditions of yoga go back thousands of years. At best, we are interpreters of ancient wisdom. The patenting and filming of specific positions is distressing. Yoga is a huge body of knowledge and practice, and you can't patent such a large entity, let alone a very small percentage of it.Nor is it the preserve of India alone. Yes, it It has been nurtured for many centuries by the monastic and guru traditions in India, but statues and paintings depicting yoga practices have been discovered all over the world. In Colombia, there are statues of people sitting in yoga positions, and adopting breathing and meditative practices, so yoga is broader than just Indian and it seems absolutely idiotic that they can patent it.In fact, I'm distressed at the way things have developed in recent years. When yoga first became popular in the 60s in the western world, it was about an expansion of consciousness. We were looking for deeper truth. - Budget undermines progress on Roma inclusion | Ethel Brooks
Compared with the US, Britain has been a model for inclusion of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers – but that is now under threatAs Britain debates the budget proposed by the Conservative-Liberal Democratic government, there is one population that could be gravely affected by the outcome of those debates whose voice has not been widely heard: Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities throughout the UK.I am a Romany woman whose ancestors migrated to the United States from England a century and a half ago. From my perspective, as an American Romany, from a country where we are neither recognised as making up part of society nor seen as anything other than criminal elements or mythical subjects, it is heartening – in fact, inspiring – to see the progress made over the past decade around Gypsy Roma Traveller history, culture and social welfare provision in the UK.Unfortunately, that progress is currently in danger. Even as Britain's third annual Gypsy, Roma, Traveller history month was celebrated last month, we have seen threats to Gypsy-Traveller site provision on the one hand, and general cuts to health, education and social welfare provision, on the other. A particularly egregious proposal, put forward by the communities minister, Eric Pickles, would target private sites, allowing the government to evict people from their own land and closing down sites with temporary permits, which would, in the end, drive people back to the sides of the road. This particular proposal would cost the government more than it would save, allowing anti-Gypsyism to trump the purported goal of balancing the budget. At this moment, Britain has the chance to be a model of best practice in its treatment of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers; the current government, however, is at risk of wasting the opportunity 米国と比べると、英国はジプシー、ローマと旅行を含めるためのモデルとなっている - だが、今threatAsで予算は、保守党自民党民主党政府の提案英国討論、そこに重々しくoutcomeによって影響を受ける可能性が1の人口ですその声に広く耳にされていない:ジプシーは、ローマとトラベラーコミュニティUK.I全体祖先米国に世紀の英国から半前に移行ローマニー女性ですこれらの議論の
- Facebook: our hiccups on privacy | Sheryl Sandberg
We should have been clearer about Facebook settings, but we've never been cavalier with dataWhen the first steam-powered vehicles arrived on the roads in Britain midway through the 19th century, parliament passed a law which stated that at least three people must be employed to drive them, one of whom should be walking in front carrying a red flag. It was not until 1896 that the Highways Act allowed vehicles to be driven without such restrictions.Initial responses to new technology often have to be adapted as usage patterns become clearer. That was true on 19th-century British roads; it is true on the internet today. Media regulations to encourage the local production of content are becoming anachronistic with content available to all. Copyright laws are having to be updated to take account of today's practices. Most relevant for Facebook, the right approach to privacy needs to take account of how consumers actually use social networks and what they want.Although many internet companies have to deal with privacy issues, this is particularly challenging for social networking sites, whose very purpose is the sharing of information. Facebook has recently been criticised for being cavalier with users' private data and for not being clear enough about how our privacy controls operate. We plead innocent to the first charge and guilty, up until now, to the second.Privacy has always been a central focus for Facebook. From the time Mark Zuckerberg launched the service in his college dorm room through to today, privacy has been a core part of our offering. In the early days, Facebook consisted of static pages where people could share some basic information about themselves and a single picture. Over the past six years we have enhanced our service considerably. - Stop the torture in Pakistan's prisons | Owen Watkins
The case of Naheem Hussain and Rehan Zaman, subjected to horrific abuse in a Pakistani prison, is far from uniqueThrough its work defending British Pakistanis facing the death penalty in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, Reprieve has become increasingly alarmed and shocked at the frequency of stories of abuse at the hands of Pakistan's police. There is no more perfect example than that of the case of British Pakistanis Naheem Hussain and Rehan Zaman, who, after more than five years in prison without trial, have suffered excruciating torture in Dadyal police station and Mirpur prison and are currently facing execution. Their case is based on an extremely weak complaint to the police (known as a First Instance Report or FIR) and confessions beaten out of both men.Torture techniques inflicted on victims such as Naheem and Rehan include falaka (foot whipping with a rod or cane), the pulling out of fingernails with pliers, the rubbing of hot chillies in eyes, endless beatings with sticks, and an excruciating practice called strapado, where the victim is hung by the wrists from the ceiling until the shoulders dislocate. The abuse is often so severe that police tire in their duties of kicking and beating detainees and are rotated, allowing them to recoup their lost strength. Each policeman comes armed with sticks, broom handles or bamboo canes.Unfortunately, most instances of torture are not reported. Police abuse appears to be so common in Pakistan that it has been accepted as the norm, even though Pakistan has formally pledged to end these practices by signing the UN Convention Against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Save for the occasional news story, many people outside the British Pakistani community show little interest in these issues. - Aid: Making development go | Editorial
UN millennium development goals need to be more than just a gesture - which is why the Guardian has launched a websiteTen years ago, the millennium development goals held out the prospect for a transformation in the life chances of the global poor. In 2000, every member of the UN agreed the millennium declaration, encompassing eight goals that included halving extreme poverty and hunger, improving health, bringing primary education to every child and empowering women – all measurable objectives to be delivered by national governments. They were designed to focus government effort in developing countries which, in a new venture in global community, would be backed by the rich world. With just five years left to meet the objectives, the MDGs' proponents at this week's UN summit began to look anxiously at progress. Like all extravagant gestures, the goals contain the implicit danger that they will be revealed as just that: a gesture. Failure would be not just a billion individual preventable tragedies; it could be a devastating blow to the recognition of the mutual dependence on which the world's future depends. That is why the Guardian, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has launched a website to provide a base from where progress can be tracked, policy debated and a toolkit of best practice assembled. There are cogent arguments to be made against the grandiose scale of the MDG project and its top-down structure. As the British government has learned in the past decade, by their very nature targets can distort outcomes. It is true, too, that progress on individual targets can be less than meets the eye: primary enrolment has soared, but investment in education has not always kept pace.
