Everyone is recoiling from the battle that should be fought against people who impose their authority by murderOne by one, those who stick their head above the parapet to demand changes in Pakistan's infamous blasphemy law are being gunned down. First Salmaan Taseer, the governor of Punjab, and now Shahbaz Bhatti, Islamabad's minister for minorities, himself a Christian. To say these men were liberals is to posit a false dichotomy. The people gunning them down are not conservatives. They are people who impose their authority by suicide bombings and murder. Their form of argument is terror, and the battle which should be fought against them by anyone who upholds freedom of belief should be as clear on the streets of Islamabad as it is in the foothills of Waziristan.But everyone recoils. The government backs off through a misguided sense of self-preservation. Weak and fragile, it believes it is being goaded into a conflict it cannot win. So it retreats, backing up against a precipice over which it will eventually fall. Instead of mobilising mass demonstrations against the killings, the Pakistan Peoples party appeases the very forces responsible for the murder of its former leader Benazir Bhutto. The next woman on the death list is Sherry Rehman. Rather than support her bid to reform the blasphemy law and hold the debate where it truly resides, with elected representatives in a parliament (what else was the struggle to end military rule all about?), the PPP prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, hung his former information minister out to dry. Under pressure from religious clerics, he claimed that she had voluntarily withdrawn a bill proposing changes to the law. She had done no such thing. Before she was born her grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who ruled the country in the 70s, was executed by the military regime that deposed him; and Murtaza's death was preceded by her uncle Shahnawaz's poisoning, and followed by the assassination of Benazir (once a beloved aunt, but by then long estranged) four years ago. So her mesmerising book often has the feel of a detective inquiry into the events of a Jacobean tragedy in which a dynasty is inexorably eliminated. But it's much more than that: a biography of her father; a memoir of a fractured, nomadic childhood largely spent in exile in Afghanistan and Syria; and a history of Pakistan since partition. Everyone mourned Bhutto – even her political enemies – because she was a woman, illustrious and a possible solution to what were, even then, seen as Pakistan's insurmountable problems.Taseer's death has unleashed the mad dogs of hell, inspiring the minority of fanatics to go to any lengths to destroy the democratic, secular and moderate Islamic Republic of Pakistan.We Pakistanis are at the edge of a precipice and as a consequence the stability of the entire region is at risk.The all-powerful army refuses to issue a single comment of support for the government or Taseer's family; the Pakistan People's Party government is paralysed and making concession after concession to the extremists and the political opposition; civil society has largely gone into hiding and anyone connected with defining Islamic principles (lawyers, judges, scholars, mullahs) refuses to stand up and be counted.The state of the nation is such that not a single registered mullah in the city of Lahore with its 13 million people was willing to read Taseer's funeral prayers, because they were too scared to do so.Five hundred lawyers have signed up to defend Taseer's killer Mumtaz Qadri, but Taseer's wife cannot find a single criminal lawyer to prosecute him. Originally published in the Guardian on 9 December 1970Pakistan has the new democratic leader she expected – Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – but also a new political situation beyond any expectation. There was stupefaction in Karachi early yesterday as returns poured in showing Mr Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's People's Party doing almost as well in West Pakistan as Sheikh Mujib's Awami League in the East. His most generous admirers had given Bhutto no more than 40 seats in the vital Punjab and Sind provinces. Instead, he may get within one or two of 90 – a triumph which has knocked most of the country's pontificating smaller parties completely off the political map.Peter Preston in KarachiLeading article: New order in PakistanThe results of independent Pakistan's first direct elections to a National Assembly are as expected. But they are none the less welcome. Foremost, they have produced a clear winner in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from East Pakistan, and a clear opposition leader in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
