    • The Devil's Double – review
Dominic Cooper's turn as Saddam Hussein's son and his body double is watchable but this is violent, unsubtle stuffRight now, James Corden is getting rave reviews for his dual stage performance in One Man, Two Guvnors at London's National theatre. As it happens, his History Boys classmate Dominic Cooper is giving his own doppelgänger turn in this movie set at the time of the Gulf war in 1990. Cooper plays Saddam Hussein's pampered son Uday and also Uday's horrified body double Latif Yahia, in a gruesomely violent, toweringly unsubtle, fantastically crass but watchable thriller, inspired by DePalma's Scarface, with a touch of Bond villainy. Everywhere there is dodgy faux-marble and the gleam of gold plate. Cooper's Saddam Jr is a gap-toothed momma's boy, bully, murderer, rapist and cokehead, surrounded by sycophants, but terrified of assassination, hence the need for a double. Yahia is a less interesting character: tough, unimpressed, disgusted by Uday's crimes, but not extravagantly so. The obvious way for the plot to go would be for Yahia to get to like being Uday, and even to like Uday himself. But these internal dramas are not explored. This isn't exactly a complex study of Iraqi history, but director Lee Tamahori punches it across, and the Stalinesque use of doubles in Iraq is interesting. The tyrant is pathetic, wishing to see only his own reflection wherever he goes.Rating: 3/5Dominic CooperSaddam HusseinPeter Bradshawguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds _NULL_

Rory McIlroy’s record-setting eight-shot win at the U.S. Open Sunday moved him to No. 4 in the official world rankings but, arguably, he’s the best player today at only 22.  While many have been quick to write off the injured Tiger Woods, my prediction is he will come back for some memorable duels with McIlroy over the next decade. ゴルフは、異なる世代のベストプレイヤーが互いに競い合うことができる稀なスポーツです

    • Cannes film festival: CIA infiltrates red carpet
I bet that when Valerie Plame Wilson was working in covert operations for the CIA she never dreamed she'd find herself on a red carpet at Cannes. But the former agent – whose cover was blown after her husband wrote a newspaper article critical of the Bush administration – is in town for two reasons: first, as the subject of Doug Liman's biopic, Fair Game (scripted by Jez Butterworth), which screens in competition for the Palme d'Or tomorrow; second, as one of the main interviewees in British documentary maker Lucy Walker's film Countdown to Zero, which aims to raise awareness of a rising nuclear threat. Some thought that the casting of Naomi Watts in Liman's film was typical Hollywood fancifulness, but this turned out to be quite wrong. Plame Wilson, who was working the red carpet look at the weekend in shocking-pink and black silk, is really rather glamorous, as well as being sharp as a knife.DocumentaryDramaCIAFestivalsCharlotte Higginsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds 私はバレリープレイムウィルソンは秘密の操作でCIAのために働いていたとき、彼女はカンヌ映画祭でレッドカーペットの上で自分自身を見つけるだろう夢にも思わなかったに違いない

    • Israel and Turkey: sailing into choppy waters | Editorial
Once again Israel has chosen a tactical victory over a strategic relationshipWhat happened when Israeli commandos boarded the Mavi Marmara, the largest ship in a flotilla aimed at breaking the Gaza siege, cannot be undone. But the diplomatic consequences of the assault that killed nine Turks were far from predetermined. Negotiations took place over the next 15 months between Turkey and Israel. Suggested phrases went back and forward, but each time the two sides came close to an agreement, it was leaked. The talks were considered so important that the publication of the UN investigation, chaired by Geoffrey Palmer, a former New Zealand prime minister, was delayed for three months. In the end, that report, which criticised Israel for using excessive force but upheld its right to blockade Gaza, was itself leaked. In offering regret and compensation but refusing to apologise, Binyamin Netanyahu's government made a conscious decision: once again Israel chose a tactical victory over a strategic relationship. At stake was more than an important military association, more than trade and tourism. It was Turkey's decision to waive its veto that allowed Israel to join the OECD. Turkey is an increasingly important interlocutor in an Arab world that has lost the certainties of its dictators, the Mubaraks, Gaddafis and Ben Alis. You may disagree with the line Turkey takes, but there is not a country in the region, including Iran and Syria, that has not used its services.Israel will be able to do so no longer. Where the Mavi Marmara went, Turkey will follow by challenging the Gaza blockade in the international court of justice. And rightly so. The Palmer panel's finding went against every statement the UN secretary general has made about Gaza, the Goldstone report and a report by the U _NULL_

Police say Tyler Hadley, 17, killed his parents with a hammer, hid their bodies in a bedroom and then invited friends over for partyA 17-year-old boy in Florida has been accused of bludgeoning his parents with a hammer, then holding a party with dozens of friends while their bodies lay in the bedroom, according to police.Tyler Hadley of Port St Lucie is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, which authorities say took place on Saturday. He is being held without bond at a juvenile detention centre.Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley were believed to have been struck in the head and torso with a hammer sometime after Tyler had posted on Facebook, around 1.15pm on Saturday, inviting friends to an evening party at his house, about 50 miles (80km) north of West Palm Beach.Investigators believe the parents were attacked outside their master bedroom, and that their bodies were then moved into the bedroom and the door locked. As many as 60 people attended the party that night, according to Port St Lucie police spokesman Tom Nichols. They were loud enough to prompt a noise complaint and a visit by police officers. When police arrived at 1.30am on Sunday to warn about the noise, the party was already breaking up, Nichols said. The police then received a tip that murder may have taken place and returned to the home at 4.20am, where they found the bodies covered with towels, files, books and other household items, and the hammer between them.Mary-Jo Hadley, 47, was an elementary school teacher. A new survey says 70% of us lack confidence shaking hands. Tell us your tales of sweaty palms and limp grips …Sweaty palms, a limp grip, a lack of eye contact: three common mistakes people make when greeting with a handshake. A new survey commissioned by the car firm Chevrolet has revealed that 70% of us lack confidence shaking hands and 19% of us hate the gesture and are unsure of how to shake correctly. The traditional handshake is a common way to greet in Britain – on average we shake hands 15,000 times in a lifetime. The handshake serves to symbolise peace and plays a key role in business, while also indicating personality. Yet it appears many of us are not shaking hands with confidence.Unlike the Japanese – who are taught the art of bowing from a young age, ensuring confident use of the greeting in adult life – we are expected to acquire the art of handshaking independently. For those uncertain in the protocol of handshaking a formula for the perfect handshake has been devised by scientists at the University of Manchester. According to Professor Geoffrey Beattie, it's all in the grip and three shakes is the optimum number.Do you shake hands when greeting? Have you ever been in doubt whether or not to shake? He was going back to the base camp to get medical attention because he was not feeling well, according to a mountaineering department official .Upadhyay's climbing companions gave him water and oxygen after he collapsed on the icy trails, but he died, most probably from altitude sickness, a common cause of death among mountain climbers. His body was expected to be airlifted to the capital, Kathmandu, on Tuesday.Upadhyay served as Nepal's foreign minister from 1986-90 and was the country's representative to the UN from 1972-78.He was trying to break the record set by a Nepalese climber who scaled the 8,850m (29,035ft) peak at the age of 76.Several dozen climbers are currently at Everest's base camp hoping to scale the peak this month. • Angela Saini | India is an emerging geek superpower
A scientific revolution sweeping India will soon place it firmly within the major world economiesIn the humid, palm-fringed surrounds of the annual Indian Science Congress in Kerala, the country's top researchers and politicians had come together to discuss what they could do to make their nation more powerful in science and technology. The congress was on a scale unimaginable anywhere else in the world – thousands crowded into huge white tents to hear lectures by physicists and rocket scientists, while wide-eyed schoolchildren posed for photographs with Nobel prize winners. Enthusiasm wasn't even weakened by the midday heat, which caused some visitors to faint while queueing for a nuclear power and space exhibition. It was there last year that the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, made clear India's big plan for its technological future: There's no doubt about it: the country is furiously pursuing development through science and technology. Tthe aim is to more than double investment in research and development, which could put it in the same league as Japan and the US.Most industrialised countries spend around 2% of GDP on research and development. Right now, India spends 0.8%, placing it alongside South Africa and Brazil. By next year it hopes to ramp this up to 1.2%, and in the longer term is determined to reach 2% – well ahead of China, on 1.5%. The UK, which spends around 1.8%, is freezing its science budget in cash terms for the next four years (which means a fall in real terms). So India's trajectory could eventually see it outpace Britain – once the world's science powerhouse. And it's a trajectory reflected in the rise of the world's 11th largest economy, with a GDP growth rate of around 9% – putting India hot on the heels of Russia and Canada, and already wealthi

    • Solomon Islands: hanging on to tradition in the digital age
Ancient chants and rap music intermingle as modern technology plays a part in preserving the pastThe ancient keening chant for the dead that has been a feature of Tikopian life for centuries contrasts with the loud rap music from the party next door. Tikopia is a tiny, isolated Polynesian island far from the capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara, where we are. Many of the younger people present have never been there, but they still follow their elders in combining ritual and real wailing whenever someone dies. The ritual nature is shown by the ease with which people resume normal conversation, chew the mildly intoxicating betel nut, listen to their MP3 players or talk on mobile phones as soon as the chanting stops. This blend of ancient and modern technology is re-emphasised by the setting. We are far from the coral lagoon and coconut palms of Tikopia, in a house sitting rather precariously on a narrow ledge cut out of one of Honiara's steep crowded valleys. The house is a mixture of traditional sago palm leaf and coconut matting with corrugated iron roof and electric light. The mourning feast is also a mixture of food cooked in a traditional stone oven and that bought in the local supermarket. It starts with a Christian prayer but ends with traditional dance songs accompanied by a wooden drum. When this is finished some people turn on the television to catch the rugby sevens from New Zealand. Others sit and listen to a playback of the chanting and traditional songs recorded on someone's mobile phone. This mixture of ancient ritual and modern technology is common here. Traditional culture is still the basis of the ceremony now, but what of future generations? Jeffry Picower's widow believed to have reached deal to return up to $7.2bn of Madoff fraud moneyThe estate of one of fraud king Bernard Madoff's closest friends is expected to announce a $7.2bn (£4.6bn) settlement with lawyers representing victims of the fraud later today.Billionaire Jeffry Picower was one of several Madoff investors who were initially viewed as victims of the fraud but were later revealed to have been major beneficiaries of the scam. Picower and Madoff often spent the weekend together and had been close for 20 years. The Florida-based philanthropist made his fortune leading buyouts of healthcare and technology firms. According to Irving Picard, the trustee appointed to recover money for Madoff's victims, Picower made $7.2bn from his Madoff investment. Following months of negotiations Picower's widow, Barbara, is believed to have reached an agreement with Picard to return the funds to Madoff's victims.Picower was found dead in the swimming pool of his Palm Beach, Florida home last year. The billionaire had been in poor health and suffered from Parkinson's and heart-related health issues, according to family spokeswoman Marcia Horowitz. The settlement would be the largest related to the Ponzi scheme, and would quadruple the amount of money recovered for victims to date. The money would bring the amount of funds recovered by Picard to about $10bn. Picard has estimated that Madoff victims lost $20bn in the fraud. This month, the family of Carl Shapiro, another old friend of Madoff's, agreed to pay Picard $625 million in settlement. • Peru: Jungle beauty lost in harsh reality
Magnificent sights surround the city of Iquitos, but most inhabitants are preoccupied with day-to-day strugglesA capped heron, Pilherodius pileatus, black cap atop white body, yellow neck and the most beautiful turquoise blue eye-ring and beak – how nature teaches colour combination. It was feeding on the mudflats round the pond. That was the 60th bird species I had identified in my garden on the outskirts of the jungle city of Iquitos. It gave me great joy to realise that, in spite of urban sprawl, logging and pollution, there are still beautiful animals about. But most of my neighbours are too concerned about other things to appreciate the beauty around them. I had just prayed over old Ricardo as he expired lying on a plastic sheet on the mud floor of his house. His old lady sat silently in an ancient wheelchair and chickens and cats seemed to be as much at home inside the rotten plank walls and holed palm roof as the numerous family. That evening Senora Sandra came to see me and reported that the interminable red tape to get her compensation was proceeding – slowly. Two years ago a motor-launch capsized her canoe. Her husband drowned in the river but the children were saved. We put a concrete floor into her hut recently and bought some straw roofing, but the rain still gets through. We noticed that the neighbouring hut of a young couple with four small girls was coming apart, so we bought some planks for them. The father had to nail them together in his spare time of which he has little, being at work, or looking for it, most of the day and night. At least they now have a solid platform above the boggy land and a small room for some privacy. We also put in a concrete floor for Dona Idolina, who lives opposite me with her many daughters, all of whom have babies. Scientists fear the storm has pulverised coral into rubble and left a swath of destructionOn its way to ravaging cities and towns in north Queensland, severe tropical cyclone Yasi will almost certainly have left a swath of destruction on the Great Barrier Reef off Townsville.Early last month, as floods struck southern Queensland, I accompanied a team of divers from the Australian Institute of Marine Science on an expedition to a 300-mile part of the reef – a fifth of the 1,400-mile-long World Heritage Area. The researchers dived 13 reefs – from Myrmidon, which is 75 miles out to sea, to areas around the inshore Palm Island group, just off the mainland. Much of what we saw was spectacular and showed the reef recovering from a decade of devastation caused by coral bleaching and crown-of-thorns starfish, both of which have been responsible for large areas of coral mortality. It may be weeks or months before scientists can fully survey and assess the damage from cyclone Yasi but, based on the effect of previous large cyclones, they will not be optimistic. Tropical cyclones generate huge waves, which pulverise coral reefs into rubble. In March 2009, category four tropical cyclone Hamish travelled in an unusual path from north to south, tracking parallel to the coast and not making landfall. It is estimated to have affected a quarter of the Great Barrier Reef.A year later I was able to dive in one of the areas hit by cyclone Hamish, also with scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Much of what we saw at the Swains, at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, was denuded of life. Numerous coral bommies, many the size of big cars, had been lifted up on to the reef flat by the force of the storm. It can take years, or even decades, for such a coral ecosystem

    • Burma: We must show our solidarity with the democracy movement | Observer editorial
We may not be able to do much to help Burma's political prisoners, but as the country's sham elections near, even small gestures of support are importantNext month, Burma will hold its first election for 20 years. Often, the reappearance of ballot boxes after such a long interval is cause for celebration. Not so in Burma, where the poll is widely seen as a cynical exercise, adding a veneer of civil legitimacy to the ruling military junta. The generals are closing the border and rescinding visas to prevent outside monitoring of the poll. Ordinary Burmese are reported to be divided over whether or not to participate. Some think it is worth pursuing the charade, if only to get the country into the habit of voting. There are 37 parties registered to take part. But the National League for Democracy, which won the election in 1990 but was never allowed to take power, is boycotting it. Its leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is one of an estimated 2,183 political prisoners. Their families and friends are kept under surveillance, harassed and intimidated.Tomorrow deputy prime minister Nick Clegg will attend an Asia-Europe summit, where he must press the case of Burmese democracy. International pressure has so far had little impact. The regime is supported by China, the regional superpower, which prefers not to see democracy movements active in its back yard. But the situation is not hopeless, if only for the reason that Burmese democracy activists themselves have not given up hope. Their cause is being highlighted in a new campaign by Amnesty International in the run-up to the election – a photo petition including politicians, religious leaders, activists and refugees, holding a hand up in protest at the regime, a political prisoner's name inscribed on their palms. The images, powerful thoug 私たちは、ビルマの政治囚を助けるために多大な貢献をすることができない場合があります国の。選挙が近くのサポートも、小さなジェスチャーはimportantNext月されると、ビルマは、20年の初の選挙を開催します

    • Pope visit: help us to CrowdMap every detail
Send in things you see, hear or record about the papal visit that the mainstream media might have missedThe pope's state visit to Britain starts today, and the Guardian – along with dozens of other news organisations – will have a team of correspondents, bloggers, photographers and columnists following his moves. But the mainstream media cannot be everywhere at once, so we are asking for your help too. This CrowdMap aims to combine verified reports from the Guardian and other media with potentially invaluable information supplied by people around the country who see, hear or record something they think is relevant about the papal visit. The platform we're using is provided by Ushahidi, which was first developed to allow cititzens to map incidents when ethnic violence erupted in Kenya in late 2007. It has been used around the world, mainly to sort data during humanitarian or environmental crises, such as the earthquake in Haiti this year. Within four days of that disaster, Ushahidi was said to have received more than 100,000 reports from the ground. The tool works best when there are large numbers of people witnessing the same large event. You can read about how the BBC produced a crowdmap during this month's tube strikes here.To take part, send us information either by email (papal.visit@guardian.co.uk), Twitter (using the hashtag #papalmap) or at the crowdmap web page. You can send anything, but we're particularly interested in incidents, events and insights from people who find themselves at the right place at the right time, spotting something that the papal entourage of global media miss. It is important that you tell us where you are when you send your dispatch. The snippet of information could be anything, from problems with queues into Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, w

    • Good list of races to watch | Michael Tomasky
At OpenLeft.com, the progressive activist and consultant Mike Lux has produced an interesting list of 16 key House races liberals ought to pay attention to. It's definitely worth a read.Lux puts Tom Periello's reelection campaign at the top of his list because he is a freshman progressive Democrat who barely won in 2008 and has voted pretty much down the line for HCR and so on. If he can somehow get himself reelected, which at this point is a bit of a long shot but not impossible, that would be a hopeful sign. And how about this race:CA-45. Steve Pougnet. This is a district carried by Obama in 2008, and Steve (the Palm Springs Mayor) is running a solid race. He would be the first openly gay dad in Congress, as well as the first legally married gay man elected to Congress. Mary Bono Mack has always had some vulnerabilities, and it's time to take her out. The first married gay man! I am way for that guy, and I hope some of these loony-toons from down south get trapped in the elevator with him. Mary Bono Mack, by the way, is the post-Cher wife (and ergo widow) of Sonny Bono, who for those of you who don't know became an off-the-charts right-winger after the singing career went poof, although by today's standards he was probably a moderate.Palm Springs, Cali, in the desert, was from the 50s forward an arch Republican redoubt. It was just about rich people and golf and self-exiled Hollywood types of that political persuasion (sadly, to me, including Ginger Rogers, who became deeply right-wing as the years went on, obviously forgetting the moral of undeservedly little-remembered I'll Be Seeing You, in which she co-starred with the great Joseph Cotten). But over the course of the 90s and aughts it became tres gay. But I think that may be kind of a weekend-seasonal thing, so I'm OpenLeft.comでは、進歩的な活動とコンサルタントは、マイクラックスは16個のキーハウスレースのリベラル派の興味深いリストを制作しているはずに注意を払うこと

    • In praise of … São Tomé | Editorial
No news was good news last year for this forgotten and magical island in the AtlanticLast year, it turns out, the Guardian managed to mention, in print or online, almost every country in the world. Three independent states were overlooked, however: Palau, Comoros and São Tomé. Already, by printing this, the omission has been corrected for 2011. More than that, however, the last of these forgotten states deserves praise. If travel writers ever descended on São Tomé they would be able to deploy every cliche. The island, and its even more isolated neighbour Príncipe, is a magical place of ridgeback mountains and rainforest, palms and rocky pinnacles, beaches and old Portuguese towns. Not very much has happened there since its rather vicious colonial rulers walked away in 1975; few people know that it is an independent country or can find it on the map, in the Atlantic just south of Nigeria and west of Gabon. Its government is democratic, the sun shines, the rain falls, the soil is good and the sea is full of fish.No one seems to go hungry and it is possible to walk across the capital in little more than 30 minutes. Chickens peck at the dust in the streets outside the pink presidential palace. For the last decade the country's citizens have been waiting for all this to change, amid expectations of an oil bonanza. But São Tomé's absence from the news is a sign the oil rush has failed so far. The money would be welcome. But neighbours such as Equatorial Guinea are a warning of how riches can be destructive. Perhaps forgotten states should be thankful.Sao Tome and Principeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds いいえニュースはAtlanticLast年に、この忘れられたと魔法の島、昨年の良いニュースだったことが判明、ガーディアンは、世界の印刷またはオンライン、ほぼすべての国では、言及することができた

    • Swedish actor Per Oscarsson feared dead after house fire
Human remains found at actor's home as police continue search for second bodyVeteran Swedish actor Per Oscarsson, 83, who appeared in the film version of Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy, is feared to have died in a fire at his home early on Friday. Human remains found in the house in a remote area near the small town of Skara, south-west of Stockholm, were either those of the actor or of his wife, Kia Ostling, 67, said a police spokesman, Jan Strommegard. Both had been reported missing by relatives, who said they were at home when the building burned down. Only the chimney was left when firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire is unknown.Strommegard could not say when the identification of the remains would be completed but said they were still searching for the remains of a second person.Oscarrson, who played Holmer Palmgren, the former legal guardian of Larsson's heroine Lisbeth Salander, appeared in more than 100 films and TV series. He won the best actor award at the 1966 Cannes film festival for his role as the starving writer Pontus in Hunger.GlobalisationSwedenJames Meikleguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

    • Conrad Black to be freed on $2m bail
Media mogul released from Florida prison while federal judge decides whether to overturn his 2007 fraud convictionConrad Black, the former Telegraph owner, has been freed from jail in Florida on bail of $2m (£1.3m), but must remain in the US, a federal judge in Chicago ruled today.Black was released this afternoon from Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, where he has served two years of a six-and-a-half-year sentence for fraud. The judge, Amy St Eve, ordered Black to appear before her in Toronto in line with the full terms of his bail, pending an appeal. Defence lawyers said he could appear on Friday or Monday.Black's lawyers, pleading for him to be allowed to return to his home in Toronto, portrayed the former media mogul, who was convicted in 2007 of defrauding shareholders of $6.1m, as financially straitened. He had no assets in the US and his finances in Canada were tied up by an injunction relating to another case, they said.On release, his lawyers argued, he could go to his former mansion in Palm Beach, Florida – though he no longer fully owns it because of lapsed mortgage payments – or to a hotel. In those circumstances, he should be allowed to go back to Canadaand his Toronto home, the lawyers said. But the prosecution insisted he remain in the US, pending the appeal, and the judge agreed. The $2m bail was guaranteed by Roger Hertog, a friend and former president and chief executive of Sanford Bernstein, an American financial research firm.Lawyers for the defence said there was a logistical problem with Black, who was ennobled as Lord Black of Crossharbour in 2001 and could yet resume his seat in the House of Lords, travelling from Florida to Chicago. Identification was needed to board a plane, and Black's ID had expired, they said. • The new Swedish xenophobia | Anders Roslund
Malm。's racially motivated shootings remind me of an earlier wounding to Swedish society. But this time they're no freakSo, it happens again. A town in flames. A nation changes complexion. A democracy looks for a new direction. It started in 1991, August; a quiet Stockholm summer evening. The silence is shattered: a man is shot and wounded. For another six months the whole of Swedish society is wounded; fear becomes a part of all of us. One person dies, and others damaged for life. Slowly a pattern emerges: a Swedish citizen who shot with a rifle and laser sights at victims who all had something in common – darker skin, dark hair, or an immigrant background.I was then the chief reporter for Swedish television on the story, which was the biggest police operation and trial that Sweden had seen since the 1986 assassination of the prime minister, Olof Palme. I reported from the first shots till the last day of the trial. I saw Sweden changed: Nazi flags were raised; there were riots between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators; young people found their way into extremist groups. And out of that time an anti-immigrant party emerged – called New Democracy – which a few months later gained a popular vote and entered Sweden's parliament. As a journalist I continued to cover the growth of rightwing extremism and xenophobia in Sweden. Just like my fellow journalist and author Stieg Larsson, death threats were made against me, and I lived in hiding with armed bodyguards. Then everything changed again. A few years later, democracy and openness had pushed back the fear of foreignness. We could once more be proud of our Sweden. Until now. Until it happened again – but this time the other way round. This time the anti-immigrant party, the Sweden Democrats, were formed first. During the マルメの人種的な動機銃乱射事件は、以前のスウェーデン社会への負傷のことを思い出します

    • The Rev Alfred Willetts obituary
My father, the Rev Alfred Willetts, who has died aged 94, and his wife, Phoebe, advanced the ordination of women. As rector and curate in Ancoats, Manchester, they organised the first priestly acts by women in the Church of England. In 1977, the Rev Alison Palmer from the US Episcopal church celebrated holy communion in their parish church. This act highlighted a paradox within the global Anglican communion – the Church of England was bound to recognise priests ordained in the US, but could not itself recognise women as priests. Phoebe's weakness from cancer gave them a sense of urgency, so Alfred and Phoebe took their rebellion further, holding a concelebration of communion in January 1978. She died seven weeks later. Alfred continued as a campaigner when the Movement for the Ordination of Women was formed in 1979, and participated in the first ordinations in 1994.He was born and raised in Old Hill, in the Black Country, and attended Halesowen grammar school, but did not complete his studies at Kings College London because of the second world war. A visit to the Imperial War Museum led Alfred to become a pacifist and, in 1940, he registered as a conscientious objector. In 1944-45, he worked for Save the Children, supplying relief in southern Italy. After the war, he proclaimed a gospel of peace as a Methodist lay preacher. In 1960, Phoebe served six months in jail for blocking the entrance to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Foulness, Essex. From then on, Alfred was a pillar of support for local CND groups. He moved to the Church of England and became a priest in 1963, serving first in Cardiff, then in Blaengwynfi, Glamorgan, and then for 18 years in Ancoats.Alfred's continued vigour and commitment showed when, aged 79, he held a vigil for peac 94歳で死亡した私の父は、牧師アルフレッドウィレッツ、と彼の妻、フィービー、女性の聖。叙任を進んだ

    • Body Shop deserves respect for putting human values above a quick buck | Jonathan Glennie
In ditching a supplier that displaced 123 families in Colombia to build a palm oil plantation, Body Shop struck a blow for dignityThe Observer reported at the beginning of the month that the Body Shop has pulled out of a supplier in Colombia on ethical grounds. This is a story about a company doing the right thing. It started a year ago when Christian Aid contacted the Observer to tell them a Body Shop supplier had just kicked 123 families off their land in order to burn down all the crops and trees to make a huge palm plantation. As Christian Aid's country rep in Colombia, I was personally involved in the case. I visited the displaced farmers and we hosted them in the Christian Aid office regularly. They were some of the most dignified people I have ever met, battered on all sides by an ongoing armed conflict and now displaced by a company that simply did not care what happened to them. The impact of the Body Shop's decision will be felt by these farmers and their families, as they continue to fight for a return to their land, and it will inspire farmers all over Colombia who will see that campaigning can lead to change. Throughout Christian Aid's engagement in this case, the big unknown was what the Body Shop would eventually decide. We knew the facts of the case, and we were confident that, when the Body Shop had them at its disposal, it would do the right thing. But the decision will have been difficult for them financially. Daabon, the Colombian company, has until now supplied the Body Shop with the majority of its palm oil, which it uses for its flagship product, soap. It is not all that easy to find new suppliers when you have extensive ethical guidelines, and I am sure some of the top executives sitting in the boardroom last week were arguing not to sever ties. dignityThe Observerは、ボディショップは倫理的な理由でコロンビアのサプライヤーから引き出され、その月の初めに報告されたため、コロンビアの難民123家族がパーム油のプランテーションを構築している業者を捨てでは、ザボディショップは打撃を打った

    • The shame of Orlando Figes | Robert Service
Orlando Figes's secretive rubbishing of my work, and his subsequent legal threats, are disgracefulToday I awoke to find that my fellow academic Orlando Figes had admitted responsibility for anonymous negative reviews of my three most recent books posted on Amazon. It's been quite a fortnight. Last week I heard from Rachel Polonsky, whose book had also been negatively reviewed. The strong suspicion, strengthened by a survey of the Amazon data, was that Figes was the author. I sent out an email about this to leading Russian and European historians without specifically naming who I thought was the culprit. Figes loudly objected, claiming to want to mend relations. Then quietly came the letters threatening legal action, and the assertion that Figes's wife, Stephanie Palmer, had admitted responsibility. This is a matter that has broad implications for the public interest, as can be seen from the way I've spent my week. I got up last Sunday earlier than usual. Been doing that since the week before when Figes's lawyer started to correspond. Don't know why I thought I would sleep. My wife, Adele, and I went to an afternoon concert in Goring by the Thames where a piece by her composer grandfather, Claude Cover, was played. We could have done, however, without the traffic jam on the way back on the M4. It wasn't until we re-entered the People's Republic of Hackney that the mountain of emails had to be faced again.I wasn't sure whether I could stand the tension much longer, but at least we didn't seem to have to worry about holding on to our house and home. I had my book to write, a book about agents and commissars in the Russian revolution. Adele escaped to her yoga class on Tuesday – she's been brilliant while all this has been happening. • The EU can stop war in north Africa | Mohamed Abdelaziz and Jens Orback
Stability in the occupied Western Sahara could hinge on the EU's fisheries agreement with MoroccoNorth-west Africa is on the brink of war. The situation is the worst in almost 20 years. The EU has the opportunity to influence the development towards a peaceful direction.Western Sahara is Africa's last colony, occupied by Morocco since the 1970s. The occupation has no basis in international law. The international court of justice has heard the case and rejected Morocco's claim to the country, while reaffirming the inalienable right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination.In the beginning, the Sahrawis resisted the occupation with arms – the right of occupied peoples – but in 1991 a ceasefire was signed with a promise by the international community that a referendum would be held where the Sahrawis would be able to decide if they wanted to be independent or integrated into the occupying country, Morocco. Since then, numerous attempts have been made to implement the referendum, but Morocco has sabotaged all of them.About 160,000 Sahrawis live in refugee camps in south-western Algeria, in the middle of the Sahara desert. Access to food and water is scarce. Sahrawi people in the occupied territories and those displaced to Morocco are living in fear. Moroccan authorities threaten, imprison and torture those who assert Western Sahara's right to independence.Almost 20 years after the international community's promise, Western Sahara is still occupied. Patience among Sahrawis is running out.The Polisario Front, the Sahrawi liberation organisation, is recognised by the United Nations as the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, and is working through diplomatic means for an independent Western Sahara. • Tate Modern's sunflower seeds: the world in the palm of your hand | Adrian Searle
Courtesy of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, the Turbine Hall is now carpeted with a million hand-painted seeds – an image of globalisation both politically powerful and hauntingly beautifulAt first sight Ai Weiwei's installation Sunflower Seeds presents us with an undifferentiated field of grey, filling the space between the bridge and the end wall of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. It is almost disappointing. The late Felix Gonzalez-Torres's piles of cellophane-wrapped sweets, which he showed in the 1980s, were prettier, and you were free to eat them (the American artist liked the idea that people could leave his shows with a nice taste lingering in their mouths). But the sweets were also metaphors for the Aids crisis, and much besides. Nothing in art is what it seems. And you can't eat a single one of Ai Weiwei's sunflower seeds, any more than you could Marcel Duchamp's marble sugar cubes. They'd break your teeth. But you can trudge over them, walk or skip or dance on these seeds, all of them Made in China. Or scoop up handfuls and let them run through your fingers, in the knowledge that someone, an old lady or a small-town teenager in Jingdezhen, has delicately picked up each one and anointed it with a small brush. Every seed is painted by hand. The town that once made porcelain for the imperial court has been saved from bankruptcy by making sunflower seeds. It is absurd.I love this work. It is a world in a hundred million objects. It is also a singular statement, in a familiar, minimal form – like Wolfgang Laib's floor-bound rectangles of yellow pollen, Richard Long's stones or Antony Gormley's fields of thousands of little humanoids. Sunflower Seeds, however, is better. It is audacious, subtle, unexpected but inevitable. It is a work of great simplicity and complexity. • Sri Lanka, no Indian Ocean paradise | Robert Mahoney
The country is trying to lure back tourists after the defeat of the Tamil Tigers, but its poor human rights record hasn't improvedBritons are again flocking to Sri Lanka. Tourist arrivals surged 47% last month from a year earlier and sun-seekers from the UK form the largest single group. That's an astounding turnaround for a country that for more than a quarter of a century had been a case study in ethnic warfare, terrorism and brutal repression. This week the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, buoyed by recent wins in presidential and parliamentary elections, marks the first anniversary of its military victory over the separatist Tamil Tigers. In the past few months Sri Lanka has been trying to burnish its image as an Indian Ocean paradise. And with some success. In January, the influential travel section of The New York Times slapped a picture of Colombo's colonial-era Galle Face hotel on its front page and put Sri Lanka at the top of its 31 Places To Go in 2010 list. And a western tourist sipping palm wine on a white sand beach or Ceylon tea in a plantation hill station might agree. The weather's balmy, the people smile, and the price is oh-so right. What visitors might not notice is that broad swaths of the mainly Tamil north and east of the country are still effectively closed military zones, and tens of thousands of Tamil civilians displaced by last year's army onslaught are still held in camps. Visitors would have a hard time finding independent reporting on these stories in the Sri Lankan media. But not to worry. So would Sri Lankans.Peace may be bringing a dividend for tourism and other business, but not for free speech. The Tamil press has long been intimidated and is extremely wary of being the first to break news critical of the government or the militar 国はタミールタイガースの敗北後、観光客を呼び戻す誘導するが、としているの劣悪な人権記録は再びスリランカに群がっているimprovedBritonsを持っていません

    • Letters: Save this beacon of philosophical study
The decision to close the Middlesex University philosophy department has roused the indignation of the academic community across the world (Reason for being, Education, 18 May). Rated the highest of all Middlesex's departments in the Research Assessment Exercise, it is recognised internationally as a beacon of philosophical study. As publishers we have benefited in many ways from the skills of those teaching at the department, and from the lively atmosphere of debate engendered across the disciplines by its work. Consequently, we feel bound to speak up in its defence. The closing of this department would be disastrous for the academic and intellectual life of this country, and we urge that the decision to do so be reconsidered.Further, we wish to express grave concern at the suspension, on 21 May, of Professor Peter Hallward, Professor Peter Osborne and a number of Middlesex University students. We believe this to be an unwarranted and unjustifiable act of intimidation by the administration and board of governors of the university, and we call for the immediate reinstatement of suspended students and staff.Pete Ayrton Serpent's Tail, Julian Baggini Philosophy Press/The Philosophers' Magazine, Anne Beech Pluto Press, Nick Bellorini Earthscan, Ashley Biles Saqi Books, Tony Bruce Routledge, Michael Dwyer C Hurst & Co, Matthew Frost Manchester University Press, Tariq Goddard Zer0 Books, Emma Hutchinson Polity Books, Jessica Kingsley Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Michael Leaman Reaktion Books, Wendy Lochner Columbia University Press, Carol McDonald Edinburgh University Press, Tristan Palmer Acumen, Jenna Steventon IB Tauris, Rowan Wilson Verso, Caroline Wintersgill Bloomsbury AcademicPhilosophyProtestMiddlesex UniversityCuts and closuresStudentsLecturersHigher educationUnivers _NULL_

    • Measuring risk: As the dust settles | Editorial
We remain in a state of confusion over the threat posed by volcanic ashHas aviation been grounded and tourism tripped up just as the holiday season is starting by European bureaucrats whose governing principle is to ban anything even remotely risky in case they should get blamed later on? Has the nanny state, in other words, been responsible for the fact that your nan has been stuck in Las Palmas? With an end to the ban in prospect because the eruption is subsiding, this is what some airline executives and a number of grumpy commentators have come close to saying. The truth lies elsewhere, and, while it does not reflect that well on governments here or on the aviation industry, this has not been a simple case of overreaction. We remain in a state of confusion over the threat posed by volcanic ash because the basic scientific and technical work needed to measure it more accurately has not yet been done. It has not been done in part because it has not been funded, and in part because competing scientific projects have taken precedence. There is as a result considerable uncertainty on the two fundamental questions of how to gauge more exactly the amount of volcanic material in the atmosphere, and, having gauged it, how to decide what amount aircraft can cope with and what presents a serious danger. That danger was first dramatised in 1982 when a British Airways 747 lost its engines flying over Indonesia during an eruption. Over the years since, an international institutional framework for early warning of volcanic events has been put in place, but progress on the satellite instrumentation needed for accurate measurement of volcanic clouds and on the testing of jet engines to see what levels they can tolerate has not been so rapid. • Our letter to tomorrow | Graham Wynne
As the election approaches, we must remember that politicians hold the key to ensuring the survival of our natural worldThe opening shots have already been fired in what promises to be a long and hard fought election campaign. As we prepare to go to the polls, our planet stands at a crossroads. Whoever forms the next government will face not only a financial crisis, but the crises facing our wildlife and our climate too.The solutions to these crises are linked. The decisions our political leaders make to fix the nation's finances will have major implications for the health of our natural environment and the wellbeing of ourselves and future generations. Put simply, it is time to cut wasteful expenditure that pollutes or destroys the environment, and invest in protecting nature and the services it provides. If there is one thing which stands as a symbol of waste and folly in public spending, it is our approach to biofuels. Biofuels were meant to be part of the solution to climate change; helping to wean us off fossil fuels. Instead, motorists are being forced to pay for a policy which is little short of an environmental disaster.Intensive production and land-use change mean many of the crops grown to make biofuels may produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the fossil fuels they are meant to replace. Some crops, such as palm oil, are grown on land hacked from the rainforests. In the UK, the amount of biofuels in our cars is driven by the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation, which requires 3.25% of vehicle fuel to be made up of biofuels. Three years from now, that will have risen to 5%, and we will have collectively paid up to £720m more for fuel as a result. We are quite literally paying to destroy the rainforests, their precious stores of carbon and their irreplaceable 選挙が近づくと、私たちは、政治家はすでに何が長いと懸命に戦った選挙されることを約束に解雇されている私たちの自然worldTheオープニングショットの生存を確保するためにキーを押した覚えがあります

    • Ana Timberlake obituary
Our mother, Ana Timberlake, who has died aged 66 of the lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, was one of those rare women who proved that you can have it all. A successful businesswoman and loving mother of three, Ana was the founder of Timberlake Consultants Limited (TCL), a statistical consultancy firm, with particular applications in medical research and econometric modelling.Ana was born in Portugal, the daughter of a civil engineer. Her father, Armando da Palma Carlos, was at that time the resident engineer on the Pego do Altar dam construction site, Alentejo, where Ana spent her early childhood. Her family were no strangers to successful women. Her aunt, Elina Guimarães (whose husband, Adelino da Palma Carlos, was appointed prime minister following the 1974 revolution) was head of the National Council of Portuguese women and is considered to have been the first feminist in Portugal.Ana took her first degree, in mathematics, at Lisbon University, before coming to Britain in 1969 to do a master's degree in statistics and operational research at Southampton University. She then took up employment at PTRC (Planning and Transport Research and Computation), a small research unit in London. An early assignment at PTRC was to re-analyse the results of Robert Borkenstein's 1964 Grand Rapids study, upon which the British breathalyser test had been based in the mid-1960s. The original data had not been statistically adjusted and earlier analysis had suggested that driving improved with the intake of a small amount of alcohol. However, after Ana had standardised the data (for weather, vehicle age, driving experience, and so on), it became clear (much to the chagrin of the brewers) that alcohol intake did indeed make driving capability progressively worse. At PTRC, Ana com 特発性肺線維症66肺疾患の高齢者が死亡した私たちの母親、アナティンバーレイク、1人は、あなたがすべてあることを証明これらの貴重な女性だった

    • Iran comes to Munich
The Iranian foreign minister comes to Munich sounding like a man ready to trade uranium in the global bazaarThe Tehran government has a gift for the theatrical. The arrival of the foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, at the Munich Security Conference was confirmed at the very last moment, and since he got here, Mottaki has held it in the palm of his hand. On Friday night he claimed a deal on Iran's uranium was close, but then added that it was up to Iran to decide how much of its enriched uranium would be included in the deal. Jam tomorrow, but perhaps not very much.Today, Mottaki elaborated on his theme at some length, without saying a whole lot more. Asked whether Iran was still willing to export the 1200 kg of low enriched uranium (LEU) provisionally agreed in Geneva last October, he slipped into the opaque language of the bazaar. It is very common in business, for the buyer to talk about the quantity, while the seller only offers the price. We determine the quantity on the basis of our needs, and we will inform the [international] bodies about our requirements. Maybe it is less than this quantity you have already mentioned [1200kg] or maybe a little more than that quantity that we may need for our reactor.Mottaki also said that Iran's nuclear experts had studied the time interval it would take to turn Iranian LEU into 20% enriched uranium in the form of fuel rods, and endorsed that interval. The talk in Geneva was that this would take a year. A few days ago in a television interview, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad talked of four to five months. Mottaki did not make it clear which time-scale he was talking about. The difference would be a show-stopper. A five month interval, during which Iran's stockpile would be reduced to below a bombs-worth, would probably not ma イランの外務大臣のミュンヘンにある男が、グローバルbazaarTheイラン政府がウランの貿易の準備のようなサウンドに付属の演劇への贈り物をしています
