    • Brian Logan is invited to Iraq
'Can you promise I won't get beheaded?'The other day I was invited on a press trip to Baghdad. This is an unusual development. I'm used to invitations to see plays touring the East Midlands, to a night of laughs at the Chuckle Hut in Newcastle-under-Lyme. But Baghdad? Car-bomb-spattered, borderline-civil war-ridden, westerner-jeopardising Baghdad? I called the PR. The idea was that I accompany a British director, now working in the Middle East, to scout out Iraq's burgeoning theatre scene. It's the kind of offer I'd usually jump at. But on this occasion, excitement found itself sharing space with trepidation and fear.I asked for assurances. Can you promise I won't get beheaded? Don't worry, he said, we have a really good production manager on the ground. This wasn't the balm I'd been looking for. Were I to be bundled into the boot of Muqtada al-Sadr's Mondeo, I don't see how the ability to source excellent theatre lighting could save me. Oh, and you'll be accompanied, said the PR, by an excellent war photographer. A war photographer? This guy really knew how to put a coward at ease.I was surprised at my own timidity, but then no one ever confused an arts critic with Kate Adie. I was arrested in Tehran once, photographing anti-US graffiti while attending the Fajr theatre festival. But when the revolutionary guard realised my detainment might leave Mitchell and Webb's new show disastrously under-reviewed, I was released without charge. In Port of Spain, I was held up at knifepoint while researching an article on a Caribbean version of Handel's Messiah. But the assailant, perhaps in solidarity with my trenchant coverage of David Hare's latest work, gave up the fight empty-handed.Otherwise, well, the comic Daniel Kitson once called for me to be violated during his 。。u0026#39;あなたは私が首を取得しないと約束?。。u0026#39;先日、私はバグダッドに記者旅行に招待された

    • Roads busy as Easter getaway begins
Expected heavy rain and winds to dampen holiday spirits as thousands take to their cars for long weekend breaksRush hour came early today as travellers opted to make the most of their Easter break despite forecasts of a decidedly soggy weekend.Large numbers took the afternoon off work and headed on to the roads after the bulk of schools closed on Wednesday. Andrea Day, of Traffic Link, said roads were expected to stay busy well into tomorrow morning with the departure of remaining holidaymakers. And while the worst of the wintry weather that brought blizzards to parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland earlier this week is easing, it is likely to be replaced by heavy rain over much of the weekend.Much of the country will experience mostly wet and windy weather, the Met Office said, although it will become slightly milder. A severe weather warning is in place for Monday, with 30-50mm (1.2 to 2in) of rain expected across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, which could cause some flooding and close roads.Today's traffic began to build from mid-afternoon, with the M25 experiencing the heaviest delays after an accident in the Holmesdale tunnel, north of London, closed two lanes. There was also heavy congestion on the M1 southbound between Newport Pagnell and Bedford, which delayed travellers by up to an hour. The A1 towards Newcastle was busy and there were delays in the Tyne Tunnel as holidaymakers headed to Northumberland and Scotland, said Traffic Link. An extra 4,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the tunnel this weekend. Many roads in Scotland remained closed owing to the snow, with Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands particularly affected. • Lady Brenda Beecham
Brenda Beecham, my wife of 42 years, has died aged 63 of bowel cancer. Having been diagnosed with the disease two years ago, she made a BBC documentary about it with her friend Sheilagh Matheson, and, later, a DVD, Have Bag Will Travel, for colorectal patients about living with a stoma. Keen to address the psychological impact of cancer, she also produced a booklet, Moving Forward, distributed by the charity Coping With Cancer.Born and educated in Newcastle, the daughter and sister of doctors, Brenda worked as a nurse and health visitor, as a volunteer National Childbirth Trust teacher and as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer for the charity Relate. Much interested in psychotherapy, she took an MA at Durham University in guidance and counselling in 1994. She then turned to life coaching, working particularly with doctors.Brought up in a committed Zionist family, she spent time on a kibbutz as a teenager and later followed her mother as chair of local women's Zionist organisations. A passionate supporter of Israel, she wanted the state to realise the ideals of its founders, not least in relation to the rights of its Arab minority, and to withdraw from the settlements. Influenced by her sister, Ros, she became involved with Windows for Peace, a charity bringing together young Jewish and Arab Israelis and Palestinians. With her oldest friend, Judith Sischy, she raised funds for two of the charity's summer schools in Edinburgh.A campaigner for Soviet Jewry in the 1980s, she twice visited the Soviet Union, remaining in contact with several refuseniks who eventually succeeded in emigrating. • Extracts from Raoul Moat's letter to police
Newcastle gunman reportedly wrote to police and the press to explain his story. Here are extracts, as published in the SunAlmost 48 hours after Raoul Moat allegedly embarked on a shooting spree at 2.30am on Saturday, he reportedly called at his friend Andy Mcallister's house and gave him a handwritten letter, explaining that he wanted it passed on to the police and press.Moat had visited Mcallister at around 11.30pm on Saturday, and police had spent most of Sunday interviewing Mcallister after he called to tell them he had seen Moat. Then around 1.30am on Monday, Moat is reported to have returned to deliver the letter to his friend to tell his side of the story, according to the Sun.These are extracts as reported in the Sun today:Last night I called 999 and declared war on Northumbria police before shooting an officer on the West End A69 roundabout in his T5. Sitting there waiting to bully someone. Probably a single mum who couldn't afford her car tax.Rang again and told them they're gonna pay for what they've done to me and Sam. I went straight but they couldn't let it go. The public need not fear me but the police should as I won't stop till I'm dead.On the night 3/7/10 I shot Chris Brown and Samantha Stobbart, after an argument earlier that evening, and here I will make all the facts clear so there is no misunderstanding. They took it all from me, kids, freedom, house, then Sam and Chanel. Where could I go from there? Obviously I have issues but I was pushed. I never beat my kids. I could simply admit to anything now cos it doesn't matter.
