- 'Al-Qaida militants' arrested in Saudi Arabia
Reports say dozens of people accused of planning to attack oil plants and other Saudi infrastructure have been detainedSaudi security services have arrested dozens of suspected militants believed to be linked to al-Qaida, the country's state-run media reported today. The suspects included 47 Saudi nationals and 51 people from other countries, the Saudi reports, quoted by Reuters, said. They are accused of planning attacks on oil plants and other infrastructure.Among the foreign nationals were dozens of people from Yemen, which has been the focus of increasing security concerns since the failed December bombing of a plane over Detroit by a Nigerian man with links to the country. Most of those held were arrested in the southern province of Jazan, near the border with Yemen, the reports said.Explosives belts, apparently intended for use in suicide attacks, were also reported to have been seized. The militants were organised in three cells, Reuters said. Two of the cells were planning to attack facilities in the east of the country and one included a Yemeni national described by security officials as a prominent member of al-Qaida.There was no immediate way of verifying the claims made in the reports.Saudi Arabia is the world's biggest oil exporter, and therefore central to the global economy. While its monarchy is an ally of the US, it is seen as a stronghold of al-Qaida activity. Fifteen of the 19 people who plotted the September 11 attacks were born in the country.Saudi Arabia has also experienced attacks. In 2003, Islamist militants opposed to the monarchy killed almost 200 people, including foreign residents.Saudi Arabiaal-QaidaGlobal terrorismYemenPeter Walkerguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditio

- Michael Tomasky: The terrorism arrest
The swift arrest of Faisal Shahzad, the 30-year-old Pakistani-American, is reassuring. And dramatic - after all those episodes of 24 and all those movies, we could all picture it in our mind's eyes, couldn't we? The FBI tracking down the man who sold Shahzad the SUV. Tracing the locations of the cell phone he'd used and dumped. And finally charging onto the plane he was on, as it was preparing to taxi and head away to Dubai, and making the arrest. The episode would have had scenes, too, of high government officials being on top of things. Attorney general Eric Holder apparently stayed at the office until 9:30, went home to tuck the kids in, and went back to the office (according to the Playbook, a morning news/heads-up email by Politico's Mike Allen), heading straight to something called the SCIF on the seventh floor. The Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. I swear, that's what it's called. This episode comes complete with Hollywood ending. Well, I guess some would prefer that the feds would have blown the guy's brains out. Instead, starting today, Shahzad will enter the justice system. Excitable blood-lust notwithstanding, this is the preferred outcome because there are still of course lots of things to learn, about whether he acted alone, about what he did during those eight months he reportedly spent recently in Pakistan. But the episode was still rattling. It's just dumb luck that the bomb didn't go off, after all. The genuinely frightening thing, of course, is whether this was just a one-off by a lone wolf (that's the direction of most of the speculation now) or whether it was part of something bigger and signals and possible uptick in such activity.Complacency is to be avoided. But so is hysteria. As I write, I'm watching CNN in my hotel room, and as far as ファイサルShahzad、30歳のパキスタン系アメリカ人、安心させの迅速な逮捕

- Guantánamo: Behind closed doors
Edmund Clark took photographs of Guantánamo – of the naval base where the American community lives and the cells in which the prisoners were confined. He also took pictures of the homes where former inmates are struggling to rebuild their lives. The collection makes compelling viewing for former detainee Moazzam BeggI've seen more cameraman and photographers since my return from Guantánamo than I can remember, all of them wanting me to pose for pictures. Edmund Clark, on the other hand, wanted to photograph everything in my home – except for me. He wanted to tell the story of Guantánamo through the prism of the domestic, of personal space. He sets pictures of the homes of former prisoners around the world against those of the cells in which we were confined. In his collection are images that will be for ever etched in my mind. The sickly green coloured mesh of my solitary confinement cage. The shackles – the bracelets of Guantánamo without which no prisoner can step outside his cell. The sound of their clanking on the metal floor of the blocks in Camp Delta is still fresh in my mind. The helmets and body armour worn by the Extreme Reaction Force, a reminder of the brutality that can still occur there. But there are also the living rooms of released prisoners in Doha, Brighton and Tipton, and the US army barracks in Guantánamo: a fruit bowl on a dinner table; a satellite dish in the Gulf; a car outside a mosque. There are pictures of my home in inner-city Birmingham; the rooms where I sit and read with my children, where we play and watch television. These simple, mundane images of daily life provide a stark contrast to the shackles and cells that were our past reality, and which are the present for the 174 still inside. One of the photographs shows the pull-up ba エドモンドクラークはグアンタナモの写真を撮影した - 海軍基地の場所をアメリカ人コミュニティーの生活とその中の囚人が閉じ込められた細胞
