    • Euro crisis: Finally, some (expensive) realism | Ilana Bet-El
The markets, like the public, have tired of grandstanding and empty promises and forced eurozone states to work togetherA stand-off between politicians and the markets is at best distasteful, but that is what the euro crisis boiled down to last week. Ultimately the markets won – and possibly to the benefit of us all.The massive bailout mechanism agreed Sunday night by EU finance ministers is a desperate step. Half a trillion euros is an unimaginable sum, and not by chance: it is meant to be beyond the realm of reality, in order to assure the markets that no matter which direction they go, the euro will remain stable. If the step works, much of the money will not be necessary. If it fails, the euro will collapse and bring down the EU with it.These are stark options. Six months ago there were others, such as addressing the Greek crisis fundamentally while looking at the mechanisms of the euro, but they were ignored. The crisis unfolded like a slow train moving determinedly towards the obstacle into which it would crash. The harsh reality of spiralling sovereign debts in a number of eurozone states combined with a lack of legal tools to deal with fiscal management of the euro – with minor attempts to change tracks. In fact, the attempts became a farce: repeated special summits of heads of state, ending in empty statements on determination and solidarity, backed up by no money and less political will. The summits came to be notorious for the heads disagreeing in private and in public on everything but one fact: Greece had lied about its finances and was therefore to blame for its own troubles, and subsequently everyone else's. In the past six weeks the international markets and credit agencies have joined Greece as the blanket reasons for blame. • Can apps save news journalism? | Adrian Monck
Wired argues that apps have supplanted the web – but whether the model works for news organisations is another matterJust when you thought the web was the unassailable media platform of the 21st century, it is cut down by that killer app from the 18th, ye olde magazine.Well Chris Anderson to be precise, who argues in Wired that applications have supplanted the web. Strangely, Anderson makes his case for apps below a chart headlining video as the internet's single biggest growth area for traffic (51% of all US internet traffic, to be precise). But taking Anderson's argument face on, where does the rise of the app leave the news business, the flatulent Rottweiler in the dog shelter of online content? Can apps give it a caring home at last? The web is already a winner-takes-all environment with Facebook its portal, and Google its yellow pages. Journalism failed to take its chance in the information revolution. But now with the move to social and mobile, phones and e-readers, is there a second chance?Serious news organisations have placed their bets. With Apple selling a million iPads in barely a month, paid iPad applications from the likes of the Times and the Financial Times line up on app stores with free offerings from the BBC and Thomson Reuters. But already there are signs that native newsreaders like Flipboard for the iPad and LeNewz for the iPhone are stealing a march on the standalone offerings of news providers. Numbers may still be modest but design, usability and social integration all place them well ahead of individual apps. Flipboard (my own app of choice) visualises the content of links shared on social networks. In other words, it builds a newspaper out of things you know other people are reading because they are sharing them – every editor's nightmare.

    • International Power set to fall to French buyer GDF Suez
      • GDF Suez deal will create one of world's biggest power groups• International Power name and stock market listing to be keptInternational Power is expected to become the latest British company to be taken over by a foreign competitor this week. The French state-controlled energy firm GDF Suez has been in talks with the FTSE 100 independent power producer for months.Barring any last-minute hitches, the deal should be confirmed on Tuesday when both companies report half-year results. The deal will create one of the world's biggest power groups. International Power's 45 power stations, including the six it owns in Britain, will be combined with those GDF owns outside Europe. The generating capacity of the enlarged group – which will keep the name International Power – will double as a result. GDF will own about two-thirds of the new company, with the rest being traded on the London stock exchange.Shareholders in the British company will receive a special one-off cash payout from GDF of about £1.2bn to sweeten the deal and secure their support. The standalone generator has long been hampered by not being able to compete with integrated energy groups like GDF.The deal will take place before any rules are introduced which could make takeovers more difficult. Following the controversial takeover of Cadbury by US food group Kraft, business secretary Vince Cable has called for changes in the takeover code to make it harder for short-term investors such as hedge funds to trigger a deal which may not be in the long-term interest of either company. International Power's takeover would not fall into this category but Britain's liberal takeover regime is coming under increasing scrutiny. • It's like locking up Burma's Billy Bragg | Melissa Benn
Aung San Suu Kyi does not stand alone. Let's show our support for Zarganar and the thousands persecuted by a brutal juntaNext Monday afternoon a small demonstration in Trafalgar Square will draw attention to the desperate situation of a talented writer with a wicked sense of humour lying sick and isolated in a cell in the northern part of his country, imprisoned solely for questioning and satirising his country's regime. Not tempted to read on? Briefly imagine the prosecution and long-term imprisonment of the cartoonist Steve Bell or the comedy writer Armando Iannucci for satirical works, or the singer Billy Bragg for inappropriate activism, and you begin to grasp both the significance and madness of this situation.Maung Thura, better known as Zarganar, is a Burmese writer, poet, activist and comedian, most recently arrested for leading a private relief effort to deliver aid to victims of cyclone Nargis, which struck Burma in May 2008. When it became clear that the government was obstructing international aid to the devastated Irrawaddy delta and surrounding areas, Zarganar led efforts to raise and distribute aid from private donors.Despite assurances from the authorities that private donors would be given free access to cyclone-affected areas, he and at least 21 others were later arrested for their participation in the voluntary aid effort. Among his reported crimes was giving interviews to overseas radio stations and other media about his work and the needs of the people. He also ridiculed state media reports about the effect of the cyclone.A 59-year prison sentence was later reduced to 35 years. Two years on, there are desperate worries about his health following a collapse in prison last April. He is said to be suffering from heart problems, jaundice and a stomach u アウンサンスーチーは、スタンドアロンではありません
