    • Sambasunda Quintet: Java – review
(Riverboat)Indonesian music has had little exposure in the UK, but next month there's an ambitious 12-date tour of major venues by a group that set out to revive and update the traditional styles of West Java. Sambasunda Quintet are from the regional capital Bandung, where they also work as part of a 20-piece ensemble mixing western and local themes. In this pared-down lineup their gentle, often haunting songs are based around the sound of the kacapi, a large traditional zither-like instrument carved to look like a boat. To this they add violin, traditional percussion, the suling bamboo flute, and cool, soulful vocal work from their female singer Neng Dini Andriatti. They start with the thoughtful, drifting Bulan Sapasi (Crescent Moon), then speed up with gently driving but still hypnotic songs, and show off their western influences on the jaunty Paddy Pergi Ka Bandung (Paddy Goes to Bandung), in which they mix Irish and local styles. An intriguing, charming set from a band who should prove surprisingly accessible to western audiences.Rating: 4/5World musicIndonesiaRobin Denselowguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. • Eliane Elias: Light My Fire – review
(Concord) This album from São Paulo's Eliane Elias is more orthodox than Emily Saunders's, but it's delivered with effortless musicality and idiomatic variety. Elias has dominated this territory since the 1980s as a vocalist and a postbop pianist. There are plenty of guests, including Elias's former husband Randy Brecker on trumpet and a vivacious Gilberto Gil. Gil appears on the conversational, vigorous Aquele Abraco (a reflection on his and Caetano Veloso's imprisonment by Brazil's military regime in the 1960s) and on the equally vivid Turn to Me, the premiere of a samba Elias wrote in 1988 with composer Gonzaguinha. Elias delivers the Doors' title track in English, as a brooding slow sway with spooky sliding guitar sounds and trickling piano. She makes Stevie Wonder's My Chérie Amour seem like a barely perceptible breeze, while the Desmond/Brubeck classic Take Five is a gentle scat with Brecker's muted trumpet drifting around it. It's as cool as samba-jazz is supposed to be, but there's absolutely nothing complacent about it.Rating: 4/5JazzBrazilJohn Fordhamguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds _NULL_

    • Banda Black Rio: Super Nova Samba Funk – review
(Far Out) The original Banda Black Rio were one of the great Brazilian bands of the 1970s and 80s. Formed by saxophonist Oberdan Magalhães, they were pioneers of the country's soul, samba and funk movement, and played a key role in Rio's black music scene in the days of the military dictatorship. The band stopped playing after Oberdan's death in 1984, but have now been revived by his son William, a singer and multi-instrumentalist who wrote or co-wrote every track on a set that's remarkable mostly for the number of celebrities who agreed to join in. Left to themselves, as on the title track, the band play cool, tight and rhythmic jazz-funk with a Brazilian edge, mixing brass with keyboards and guitar. They are great musicians, but sound even better as a backing band. Here, they are joined by a cast that includes the new samba hero Marcio Local and the charmingly relaxed Seu Jorge. There's a cool, drifting ballad from Gilberto Gil, and a lilting, slinky reminder from Caetano Veloso of the way Brazilian soul-funk was influenced by bossa and samba. Best of all, there's another great veteran, Elza Soares, with her upbeat, finger-clicking treatment of Isabela proving she is still in magnificent form.Rating: 3/5World musicSoulBrazilRobin Denselowguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds _NULL_
