This will certainly dismay some of the more radical elements of the region's independence movement. Many of the younger Tibetans in exile are already frustrated with their spiritual leader's moderate and non-violent approach. For them, independence will always trump the environment.But if the concern is the survival of the nomadic peoples of the Tibetan plateau, the Dalai Lama is right. Exile activists, with a familiar cast of celebrities and sympathisers, have done much to define western perceptions of Tibet as primarily a political issue. But the Dalai Lama's efforts to secure a meaningful autonomy for Tibetans have not flourished. Nor has any pressure applied by the US measurably improved Tibetans' freedom; and today, with an increasingly confident and nationalist China, the prospects for progress are in retreat.Meanwhile, beyond the Himalayas, the profound and irreversible impacts of dramatic environmental changes are overtaking politics as a threat to the Tibetan way of life. My friend Hanna Behrend, who has died aged 88, was a leading academic in the former German Democratic Republic and an expert on all matters of life in the GDR. She travelled regularly to Britain where she made friendships with many fellow academics and gave lectures on English literature, feminism and the politics of German unification.She was born in Vienna, Austria, but as a Jewish teenager was driven into exile, first in France and then in Britain, by the rise of the Nazis. She spent most of the second world war in Britain. Once the war was over, she returned to east Berlin to help build what she hoped would be a new democratic and anti-fascist Germany. She studied history and English at Humboldt University in Berlin and later completed her doctoral thesis there.After earning a living as a translator and editor of English texts, she began lecturing in the university's English faculty. She became the project leader for studies on the working-class literature of Britain and Ireland. During the 1970s and 80s she sat on a ministerial committee for teaching English in higher education. In 1982 she became assistant professor for English literature at Humboldt University.After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, she criticised the marginalisation of GDR academics, as detailed in the book she edited for Pluto Press, German Unification: The Destruction of An Economy (1995). Hanna was the author of a number of well-received books and in 2008 published her autobiography, Die 。。berleberin: Jahrzehnte in Atlantis (The Survivor: Decades in Atlantis).Hanna had a son, Hansjürgen, from her marriage to Hugo Köditz. Even after the peace, Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance army continued to cause havoc until they were finally pushed out.I thank God for the peace that has brought so many benefits to the people here. Over the past five years people across the country have been able to return home after more than 20 years of exile in Uganda or Kenya or from mountain hideaways.The villages to which they returned were, more often than not, completely destroyed or overgrown. My people have had to rebuild their homes from the materials nearby; they have tilled fields by hand and with the most basic of tools. Tunisian Islamist leader Rached Ghannouchi returned home after more than 20 years in exile on Sunday, local reports said.
Ghannouchi was seen being greeted by a large number of supporters after his plane touched down at the Carthage airport in Tunis.

Originally published in the Manchester Guardian on 15 October 1954Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God, Emperor of Ethiopia, arrived at Victoria Station yesterday afternoon and was greeted by the Queen and others of the Royal Family.Not all the Government, civic, and military dignitaries who waited on him are tall men, but the Emperor still seemed slight and small among them, in spite of his cocked hat with a lion's mane for decoration. But he appeared – as so many people remember him during his exile – infinitely dignified and proud. However, he could never, in the years of appeasement, command a reception like the one he had yesterday. The Queen presented the Emperor to the waiting line, in which Field-Marshal Lord Alanbrooke, as Lieutenant for the County of London, was the right-marker. Sir Winston Churchill, Mr Eden, and Sir David Maxwell Fyfe came next, then the representatives of the forces, the City, Westminster, and the London County Council.The royal party left the platform and debouched into Hudson's Place, normally a dull thoroughfare at the side of the station, but yesterday brightened by a guard of honour of Grenadiers with a band to play the royal salutes.
